What an improvement!!!! Â Been back hand full of times and food, service and ambience is amazing. Â Had lunch there today and was totally bummed the restaurant was empty. Â Daily specials are always great, but today I ordered 2 dishes, hot wings and 3 slider appetizer. Both super tasty!
I think anyone who works in Vernon or Huntington Park area should really give them another try.
I just wanted the business owners to know that I think the remodel of this restaurant is an absolute tragedy. I was so excited to visit after reading about your place on this site: http://retrorenovation.c…
It was this amazingly well kept 60s time capsule. Â I was bursting at the seams with excitement to visit. Â But then I see in the photos that you've totally ruined everything. Â All of that painstaking work someone must have done to keep the place in its original state has been wasted. Â Thank god the counter seating area seems mostly intact. Â But it's still been spoiled. Â
Business owners need to learn that the entire appeal of places like this is to see the amazing midcentury architecture (it's really popular right now.. haven't you noticed?) & design elements. Â It's not for the mediocre food & cheap half assed remodel job.
This is an old classic in L.A., but has lost favour over the years. Â I recently went in for a salsa promotion (they are trying to get salsa and bachata going there on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays). Â The menu is currently very limited but Happy Hour is priced nicely - i had the sliders and a glass of malbec - good and inexpensive. Â Great dance spaces - two big areas for dancing. Â Pleasant staff. Â Good dj's the Thursday i went. Â I hope the place is able to survive.
Review Source:What does this place have going for it?
1) Proximity to my office.
2) Decently priced happy hour beer specials. ($7 for a liter of Stella)
Other than that, it is usually pretty empty and the music is way too loud (and bad). They are somewhat accommodating and will turn down the music outside if you're the only people out there. The decor is interesting - it has a 1940's-1950's lounge thing going on - but it looks and feels out of place in Vernon (which isn't exactly the best area and is composed primarily of industrial buildings). The oddness is only further emphasized by how empty it is.
I haven't had much in the way of food there but the salsa is bland, which is always a bummer for me. That said, it serves its purpose as a place to grab a quick beer or two after work!
It's really pretty bad. Â It's close to my office, and as such, we seem to end up there once in a while. Â They have gone through no less than six different permutations in the six years I have worked in this area (local diner, sultry swingers lounge, haute-cuisine restaurant - I think they even had a lobster special going for a while). Â The food is pretty bad, the service is pretty bad (with the NOTABLE exception of Dorita, who is a gem, and a reminder of what service USED to be like; I'd give her individually five stars if I could). Â People get excited to go there because it has been used as a location for "Mad Men." Â But save your pennies, Don Draper - the dining experience here only leaves you as a mad man.
Review Source:La Villa Basque Vivera Lounge is probably one of the fanciest restaurant in the city of Vernon, birder line Huntington Park. I started coming here a few months ago. I noticed it because I pass by it everyday on my way to work and always wanted to stop by. I booked marked it and decided to give it a shot, despite of whatever the reviews said. I saw a lot of advertisements for Friday night dancing, and Monday happy hr. margaritas. SOLD!!! :)
The decor is really elegant!! I was surprise of how nice it is despite of the location. The first time I came here was for a co-workers birthday party. The play top 40's, salsa, merenge, and banda. I was shocked of all the people that come here to be honest. lol The food is also a big hit! My salmon plate was delicious!! I will definately will be coming back for more.
This is also becoming a popular spot for lunch! My co workers and bosses always get take out :))
I went this past Saturday night. I expected the place to be semi empty and it was. We arrived early and i felt like we were the only ones in our 20's except for the staff. As the night progressed younger people came in which made me feel a little more comfortable.
The bartender did her job well. If it weren't for her this place would've gotten a one star. Omg the waitresses need a lot of training. Their service was horrible. I was ready to spend my money on drinks and food but after one of them gave me attitude for asking if she remembered what I had order I decided not to spend another penny and I didnt even leave her a tip!
VERY DISAPPOINTING - went for a birthday lunch, service was terrible. ordered an appetizer, PEI Mussels, broth tasted like dish water and all 4 of us had steak which tasted like RUBBER.
It's unfortunate because it's a beautiful restaurant, but they really need to step it up and hire a new chef... won't be going back anytime soon until this happens.
Terrible. Horrible. Very bad. No good.
So this place is in Vernon, apparently it is historical and has been there for ages. It's on a random ass street corner in Vernon between a few meat packing plants.
We walk in, middle of the week at about noon. Â The place is like half empty (depending on the way you look at the place) so we figure it should be no problem to fit in an hour lunch.
Well, when it took 15 minutes for us to get menus, I knew I was wrong about that. Â On top of that, after I ordered my 14 dollar Greek Salad (WTF, srsly) off of the cracked out menu that had everything from French Onion Soup to fish tacos, it took another 15 minutes to get a bread basket and water on the table. Â We continued to wait. Â And Wait. Â But funny thing is no one waited on US. Â The waitress did not even LOOK our way. Â
As we all nervously looked at our watches, knowing that those glorious 60 minutes were all but gone now, we flagged the waitress down. Â We asked if we could have the food to go and she just stared at us blankly like "did we do something wrong?" or more like "how dare you ask that". Â She blurbed something about the rice taking a long time to cook and then darted away. Â Disgusted that she did not even apologize or explain 30 minutes ago that the order was going to be delayed, we all came to the consensus that we were going to leave. Â This decision was solidified when the waitress dropped off the check on the corner of the table, didn't look at us, and walked away. Â Oh hell no!!! Â
So, before our food arrived at the table we got up and walked out. Â Ridiculous and disappointing. Â GOD AWFUL SERVICE, I highly recommend avoiding this place and trying out one of Vernon's many other culinary delights at your lunch hour...
The food here is really not that great. The staff doesn't seem to be well educated on their wines or their food either. When we asked for recommendations on what is good all we were told was the salmon and the pasta. Never which kind of salmon or which kind of pasta. When we asked what kind of wines there were that were available, we weren't provided with a wine menu just what they could remember or retrieve from the bar.
Mediocre really.
I had a pasta dish which was a bit mushy, no special flavors - nothing really stand out.
I have been to this restaurant many times over the years. Â I will never go back. Â I paid $11.00 for a pastrami, fries and cole slaw. Â The pastrami had about $1.00 worth of meat that was fried! Â I didn't dare send it back. Â I'll just never go back.
The service was equal to the quality of the food.
They've remodeled this place recently so I'm giving it a 2nd chance. I had the Ahi tuna with fettucini, mannnnnn it was horrible. The pasta burned, the tuna was like biting Big League Chew and the sauce had a hint of can and something was wrong with the 7up, it just tasted funny.
Happy hour is the only thing this place has going for it, sitting at the bar has an old school gangster feel which is pretty cool. Beers are a decent $4 and Margaritas $5. On a positive note the waitress/bartender is really nice and attentive.
Although I have never reviewed a restaurant before, I was compelled to write this scathing review of La Villa Basque because my recent meal there was the WORST dining experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Â I will address each of my complaints in turn:
1. We purchased a http://Restaurant.com gift certificate (through a link on Yelp, which is still up as of the date of this review) the day before we were taking a group of thirteen (13) people from our corporate office for a birthday luncheon. Â When I presented the certificate prior to ordering I was told that the restaurant had changed ownership four (4) months earlier and that they no longer honored gift certificates purchased on http://www.Restaurant.com. Â I explained that I had just purchased it the day before (it had the purchase date printed directly on it) and that it was still available for sale, but the manager simply stated, "I'm sure you understand my position." Â Not only did he not honor the gift certificate, but he offered us nothing as an accommodation, either.
2. When we received our bill at the conclusion of the meal, a mandatory twenty percent (20%) gratuity had been added. Â Not the standard eighteen percent (18%), but TWENTY PERCENT (20%)!
3. We had compiled a list of our orders prior to leaving for the restaurant from the menu that is posted on their website, http://www.lavillabasque…. We were hoping that this would be helpful in expediting the ordering process. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were told that the menu had changed more than four months ago (when they had changed ownership). And what a change that was because virtually none of the items we selected were available! The items that were still available were now MUCH more expensive. Most items cost approximately 25% more than they did previously (example: Cheeseburger had been $8.50 and was now $10.95).
4. We were seated at approximately 12:05 p.m. and our first main dish (no one ordered appetizers or soups or salads) arrived at approximately 1:10 p.m. Â We had waited OVER AN HOUR to receive anything other than our drinks and some dinner rolls.
5. DO NOT ORDER A HAMBURGER: Â We ordered a hamburger, which came as a cheeseburger, and it was dry and tasteless.
6. DO NOT ORDER A GREEK SALAD: Â We ordered the Greek salad, which came with uncooked noodles that were not edible and the salad itself was completely dry (no dressing).
7. DO NOT ORDER A TUNA SALAD SANDWICH: Â We ordered a tuna salad sandwich, which was dry and tasted as though it had come directly from a can.
8. DO NOT ORDER THE AHI TUNA: Â We ordered the ahi tuna, which was a giant dry, broiled tuna steak with dry (borderline crispy) rice and burnt vegetables.
9. DO NOT ORDER THE NEW YORK STEAK: Â We ordered the New York Steak (which was the most expensive item on the menu) and it arrived lukewarm, undersized and very fatty. Â Also, the guest who ordered the steak was not given a choice of sides and was arbitrarily served under-cooked French fries and burnt vegetables.
10. One member of our group was a vegetarian and she ordered a meal described simply as the "Spinach Rigatoni." Â When it arrived it was actually Penne pasta with lots of chicken.
11. They charged five dollars ($5) for a small bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water.
12. Our meals did not arrive all at once, but instead they arrived in shifts. Â We would receive 2-3 dishes, and then ten (10) minutes later we would receive another 2-3 plates, etc. Â From the time we received the very first plate, it took over twenty (20) minutes for the delivery of all of our orders to be complete. Â
Overall, we were BEYOND disappointed in La Villa Basque. Â Several members of our party had eaten at this establishment numerous times while it was still under the previous ownership and had had very favorable prior experiences. Â However, we now recommend that you avoid this establishment altogether due to the OVERPRICED, SUBSTANDARD FOOD and POOR MANAGEMENT.
Well, our experience was not quite as traumatic as Kerry's. On the negative side, they refused to honor the discount menu that is on their website, snickering and smirking that the website was "old". Â Well, I read it 10 minutes before bring my party of 10 to their establishment. Â So, instead of the $5 specials everyone had to pay around $12-$15 for their lunches. Â Negligent service aside, most people at our table seemed to be happy with their food. Â This is definitely a place that you go to for the Retro-Mad Men-Don Draper-JFK Meeting Marilyn-Possible Mob-Hit About to Happen kind of ambiance. Â Next time I go I will have a cup of java in their very cool coffee shop, (which was empty when we got there and when we left), post it to Facebook, and get out before the bill comes.
Oh, speaking of the bill...the waitress just about threw a flying tackle at me when she thought we stiffed her for the check. Â We pointed out that someone else had taken our very hefty stack of money, and she wandered back into her normal state of semi-coherence.
This is officially the WORST meal I have ever had in my life. Â You walk in and the place seems like one of those old restaurants that have been around because the food is legendary. Â Well its not. Â We sit at our table and the place is falling apart. Â Right next to me was a piece of molding coming off the side wall right at me. Â The bathrooms are even worse. Â The bread came which was really good...but it was down hill from there. Â My mom ordered the Shrimp Louie Salad and a French onion soup. Â I ordered the salmon with a grilled onion and tomato base, saffron rice and squash, and my friend ordered the osso buco. Â Well, the soup came...I have never in my life seen a spoonful of grated parmesan cheese on French onion soup. Â It was like they just spooned in on top of the "crouton" Â Looked gross, my mom mixed it into her soup and it just made it worse. Â On top of that the broth had NO flavor at all. Â It tasted like they cooked the onions for 5 or so min. then put water over them and called it a soup. Â That started to get me worried.
Our entrees came...My friends osso buco came cold and tasteless. Â The shrimp on my moms salad were rubber, the asparagus was way overcooked, canned artichoke hearts and they obviously don't know how to hard boil an egg. Â Worst dish of all was mine of course. Â For some reason my salmon was white. Â That freaked me out a bit but decided to try a bite just in case...it did not taste like salmon at all. Â It was the most fishy taste I have ever had it literally gave me this chills/throw up feeling. Â I tasted what was supposed to be the saffron rice and it was undercooked brown rice with NO flavor at all...I didn't even try the steamed veggies (it was supposed to be squash) because I don't think steamed veggies are supposed to have burn marks. Â I had to return it because it was making my stomach hurt and had them get me a ceaser salad instead thinking that would be the "safe" choice. Â I was mistaken. Â The salad had WAY too much salad dressing on it and the croutons tasted like just stale bread, there was no crunch to it like a baked crouton has. Â It tasted like they took fresh soft bread and toasted it for a few min.
The good part was the waitress was nice about me returning my dish and the bread was good. Â Other then that I would in no way EVER go back here nor recommend anyone else does either. Â The dishes are wanna be French that just went all sorts of wrong.
How have I lived in Boyle Heights for two years without knowing about this place? I like a restaurant where the manager meets you at the door twirling a bottle of Grand Marnier in one hand and you can chat a little en Francais. French was my first language, and their cuisine is my second comfort food (Jewish delicatessen comes first). The Basques are very interesting, they're a cross between French and Spanish, but they lean towards the French in their cooking.
Anyhow, about this restaurant: I loved it. It is elegant, with good decor and nice ambiance. I liked the white tablecloths and red cloth napkins, the beautiful wooden fretwork panels and the copper chandeliers, the bowl filled with cut flowers and fern fronds on my table and the authentic French rolls. At first I didn't even notice all the fashionable young men in the tables around me (what used to be a hog butcher's diner now caters to the fashion trade), but once I did, I liked it!
Of course once I saw it on the menu I had to order my signature dish, French Onion Soup. My grandchildren pointed out that I could have a cup of soup with a half a grilled cheese sandwich as one of the $5 lunch specials, so I did. This isn't a proper French meal with many courses, but it's a good deal if you don't have a big appetitie.
My sandwich was fine, buttery and crisp from the grill with lots of cheese. But I wasn't prepared for the best French Onion Soup I have ever had in my life--yes, better than Paris. It made me feel like a little girl again, and I wasn't ashamed to ask the waitress for a little more broth, which she was happy to get for me, after recommending other traditional French dishes from the menu for next time (I smiled politely, knowing I will not be ordering anything other than this wonderful soup).
While waiting for my refill, I noticed a garlicky dill pickle on my plate, and started nibbling it in my own special way -- like an ear of corn, all the way back to the skin. What can I say? I happen to like the center. Â
Over all this would be a nice place to bring a date to, or even to take the Queen of England. I'll certainly be coming back soon with Harry, maybe even tomorrow. Next time I think I'll just get the soup in a bigger bowl, because a sandwich is a sandwich, but that French Onion Soup was exceptional. They serve lunch only, and are so convenient for me.
50 years in Business - Juicy to that
On the corner of Leonis and Soto and their 50 year old sign, it's so easy to miss this place. It doesn't even look like a restaurant on the outside and looks old. When you walk in the place has a very ancient feel to it. I don't know if that's a good or bad feeling. It's good that it's been there for so long but scary? I wouldn't be caught eating there at night that's for sure. But it does open till 9pm and I think a lot of people go there for happy hour after work.
The food I got there was lunch special food, it was just a typical teriyaki chicken with veggies dish. I thought it was whatever but it was only $10. It's a great place to go if you work around the area but I wouldn't drive down here to eat here. I only ate here once just to try the 50 year old experience but I probably wouldn't be back here again.
This place didn't really stand out to me and I would much rather spend my $10 elsewhere. I hear stories about this place how food has changed from before and it's one of the only last places that still exists in that area so that is definitely juicy.
This is the kind of place where only people who work in Vernon stop to eat (especially since it's only opened for breakfast and lunch, Monday to Friday). It has solid, reliable food... nothing fancy. But I'm giving it 4 stars because they have the best Osso Buco I've ever eaten. The meat is falling off the bone and the bone marrow is absolutely delicious.
I recently had the lamb chops because Osso Buco wasn't available that day. Absolutely delicious!!! I have two favorites now.
If you love retro places, you'll enjoy having a meal here.
Located in the middle of nowhere amidst warehouses and train yards in Vernon sits this amazing restaurant. It's been here since the early 60s and the decor has not changed - it's so cool, as if you have been transported by a time machine to 1962. The wait staff looks as if they have been here since opening day and are very sweet.
I had lunch here and enjoyed the tri tip and mashed potatoes. It wasn't the most tender or flavorful tri tip but not bad at all, especially for the price. The potatoes and gravy were just like my grandma used to make.
Plenty of parking in the huge lot. The hours are odd - mainly just weekday lunch but sometimes they are open for dinner but maybe it's just for special occasions. Part of the building is a cool coffee shop but you should really eat in the rat-pack dining room.
The food is a 3 but the service and atmosphere are a 5 which = 4.
I've taken clients for lunch here over the years and it's changed little. This time, I just went in by myself in between appointments. The decor, building, bathrooms, everything is dated. Â But if you're stuck working in Vernon, it's a convenient place to eat, with some decent lunch specials like steak or sole muniere, either are served with potatoes or rice and salad with warmed bread for about $14,00. The prices probably have gone up $2-3 dollars for the entrees over the past two years.
Service is friendly, one of the older waitresses that waited on me has been here forever. Â Service is sometimes not that great when there are lots of people around lunchtime. Â Am not sure if the Basque dishes are really Basque - it seems very American to me and my clients. There's convenient parking, It's only open during the day, so don't expect to eat dinner here. Â Clientele are generally business people from Vernon and some old time customers who are retired.
I didn't see the elderly couple on this visit or the previous few lunches I've had there. Â But years ago, there was a couple who did some work in the movie industry. Â On Friday's around noon, they'd show up wearing clothing from the 1920's. Â The old lady would wear a wide brim hat and flowing evening dresses of bright pink or flowers of every color, and the gentleman had on a dark suit with the very wide lapels. They're probably gone. I appreciate there's a sit down place to eat when working in Vernon besides Norms, IHOP, or the Mexican places in Huntington Park a few miles away to the south.
Just the fact that this place exists is awesome.
It's only open from 7am-3pm (Work hours) and only Monday through Friday. Â So don't expect to be coming during no evenings or weekends.
The decor has not been changed a single iota since it opened in the 50's (60's?) - Kind of googie, but not crazy. Â
Staff is great and nice and all settled in. Â I had the Portobello Sandwich and it was amazing. Â Grilled Portobello, smoked gouda, grilled bell pepper & Pesto. Â Seriously awesome atmosphere & food.
Right smack dab in the middle of all the factories.
i work about 1/2 a block from here so when i get sick of my packed lunch or the food truck, i come here.
i sit in the coffee shop section and always order the croque monsieur sandwich. i've had the croque monsieur sandwich at other places and this one is by far the BEST i've ever had hands down. also if you don't want french fries or coleslaw, you can ask for fruit instead if they have it.
they have some nice salads and entrees but i think the croque monsieur is a winner. the french sure know how to make a ham sandwich!
yes, the decor is something like out of the 60's, but i think its what gives this place its charm. the people are friendly and the service is pretty good. the manager is really nice and more than accommodating.
they started serving breakfast and also they are going to start doing a cocktail hour too just fyi
Time warp! Â I'm pretty darn sure that nothing has changed at La Villa Basque since 1960. Â It's awesome, remarkable, scary, and weird...all at the same time.
Since I was in Vernon for a morning business meeting that dragged on until 1:00 p.m., I yelped a place nearby and took three hungry NYC tagalongs to this joint. Â They marveled at the idea of "old L.A." and gawked at the Mercedes and Jaguars outside of the nondescript stucco building bearing the signage "Coffee Shop Here".
The food is unremarkable and, honestly, is entirely beside the point. Â One does not go here for the cuisine. Â You're either (A) in Vernon for some reason and have no other options for sustenance or (B) a rabid fan of truly bizarre eateries. Â (If you fall into the B category, don't miss the domed fireplace that has turned into a fountain in the lobby area.)
Out of four (simple) orders, I was the only one who got the meal I asked for: Niçoise salad. Our waitress was literally on the verge of tears, though, because they had JUST (yesterday) implemented a computer system. (The future has arrived, apparently.) She was visibly flustered and, at the end of the the meal, exclaimed, "I'm going to go home and cry tonight. I just can't adjust to this new system. We've always just written out tickets. What am I supposed to do now?" So, I have to cut her some major slack in the service department.
With the caveat that I like *anything* weird, I'd totally go back. Â They had some seriously kickin' Muzak, which leads me to believe that the dinner crowd could provide me with hours worth of interesting cocktail party conversation in the future.
Wow, I'm so glad I wasn't scared away by various online reviews I've read!
I was dying to check out La Villa Basque once I had seen photos posted on the Lotta Living website. Â At the very least, I knew I'd get to see a very well preserved Mid-Century restaurant. Â At the most, I'd actually enjoy my lunch.
I took the day off (it's only open weekdays 11-3) for my birthday, and La Villa Basque was on the "must visit" list. Â My friend MIssy, her 3 month old twins, and I, pulled in the lot around 1PM. Â We sat in the Coffee Shop because it seemed kind of casual compared to the darker (and fancier) main dining room. Â Our server was a really sweet older lady. Â I had the grilled cheese and had ordered potato salad, but ended up with fries. Â My friend had the roast beef and grilled cheese sandwich. Â I have to admit, I was actually AFRAID of the fries after reviews I have read, but they were GOOD! Â They were similar to McDonalds fries, nothing fancy, but they were hot, fresh, and not greasy. Â The grilled cheese was your standard American Cheese on white bread, and it was fine. Â
The Coffee? Â GOOD! Â My friend's sandwich? Â GOOD! Â The decor? Â AWESOME! Â
All in all, if you like vintage diners, this place is a MUST SEE. Â Don't be as afraid of the food as I was. Â Try something off the daily special menu. Â
I wish they offered weekend breakfast, I swear I would drive to Vernon just to eat a waffle in the vintage splendor.
BTW, there is an awesome bar in the back with an old school bartender. Â The main dining room has wrap-around booths and seemed very cozy, but the coffee shop side has it's own charms as well.
Eureka, I did it!! I found the WORST restaurant in Los Angeles!
Oh goodness. This is a bad restaurant. Laughably bad. I came here for lunch not too long ago because I am constantly in search of good places to eat in Vernon. Let me tell you, there aren't many. This is, by faaar, the worst place to eat in Vernon...or in all of LA. I admit, the decor is kitschy in a sixties sort of way. (no, I don't think they were attempting to recapture that era; I think they've just been around that long). How...I have no idea. Their food is horrible. I went with my co-worker/friend/lunch buddy Judy, and I got the ham sandwich au jus. You can imagine my surprise when the waitress brought it out and the au jus was already on my sandwich!! It was a soggy mess. There's nothing I hate more than an (unintentionally) soggy sandwich. That wasn't the worst thing though...the meat was. It couldn't even pass for cafeteria-quality lunch meat. It was rubbery and bouncy --- qualities that should NOT be associated with meat. Even with the au jus-soaked bread weighing it down, the folded-over ham would not stay in place. How hard can it be to go to the local Vons and pick up some lunch meat from the refrigerator section?? Or even up the street to the Farmer Johns processing plant??
And the fries. How can you mess up fries? I have no idea what they fried the potatoes in, but it wasn't like anything I've ever tasted before (not in a good way, either). It's hard to describe...but if I had to, maybe...old, heavily recycled oleo.
Luckily, they did provide complimentary dinner rolls with the meal. I just reassembled the sandwich using the dinner rolls --- but that was still pretty hard to swallow. I think the bill came out to be around $27, pre-tax and tip. I most definitely do not mind shelling out for good food, but this was ridiculous. The waitress was nice though, so that bumps it up to two stars...and the fact that I'd feel really bad giving it just one star. Good luck if you check this place out, consider yourself warned.
