We just went thru the Haunted Lagoon and was hungry!! Â we are all thinking Zippys back in town, but someone mentioned Laie Chop Suey. So it was a go.
I had dinner here with a group of 11. Â We each ordered a dish and did family style. I thought their food was great! Until i spilled the entire Lemon Chicken sauce on my plate of food. Man i was so bummed. Â But my bf switched plates with me! So nice of him.
The staff was welcoming and very friendly. My water was refilled without constantly bugging them. They dealt with our paying method of half cash and 3 debit cards for one check mess. Oh man I would've gone crazy. lol.
My fave dishes are: Chicken Black Bean, Walnut Shrimp, and Lemon Chicken.
It was yummies in my tummy!! I plan on going back the next time I'm in the area.
So many negative reviews....
I personally had a pretty good experience here. Â I had been sick and in great need for some soup, however I did not want to drive all the way into Kane'ohe for some oxtail soup or pho. Â My fiancee on the other hand had wanted to eat chopy suey which was not at all what i wanted, but I agreed to go along for the ride. Â However, when we got there I discovered that to my pleasant surprise they had oxtail soup!
We kind of forgot that portions are a little big for one person so we ended up with plenty of left overs. Â Prices were very fare.
What we ordered:
Oxtail soup - yummy, plenty of veggies. not much oxtail and i think i'd prefer zippys oxtail.
Mushroom chicken - big fat mushrooms, decent amount of chicken
Gon lo mein - as good as any other i've eaten
Service was decent and overall i left content and full of soup :)
Makes me wanna cry how bad their chinese food is. and they are CHINESE.
Poor quality and very overpriced. Chow mein is super gross. their lunch specials are decently priced, but i love eating leftover chinese food and this place's food makes very bad leftover chinese food :[
L&L in the same lot has chopstick express (panda express style) that's better.
Quite disappointing. The prices are high for what you get. Ordered Mongolian Beef, Chicken Chow Mein, and Lemon Chicken. If I had to come here again, I'd only get the Lemon Chicken. Mongolian Beef was weird--didn't have much flavor and the sauce was extremely thick and gloppy. Chicken Chow Mein was a little better, but there was a questionable mysterious item of goopy sorts in it that scared me off. There was a fair amount of chicken, but again--flavor was off. The Lemon Chicken was good--but you can't go wrong with deep fried chicken and lemon sauce, I suppose.
Service was horrible. Wish I had spent $30 at Kahuku grill for dinner instead of this place. Disappointing.
We were visiting the North Shore and were on the hectic evening run of trying to find a place to eat dinner. Luckily, we came across this place next to the Foodland. They were pleasant to us even though we came in 15 minutes before closing (8:45 pm). The waitress was friendly and patient by giving us time to decide. It was nice to find some Chinese food close by.
We ordered Roast Duck in Noodle Soup, Won Ton Noodle Soup, Seaweed Soup, Curry Eggplant, Fried Rice, and Mongolian Beef. Everything hit the spot and the bowls were generous portions. The Won Tons had a good amount of meat with a good balance of veggies. Though, the Seaweed Soup was average.
Even as a family of four, we had some leftovers for lunch the next day. We strongly recommend this restaurant!
Guess I shoulda read the reviews so I would have known what to order. Â It turns out that I ordered pretty standard fare. Â I won't be specific but suffice it to say I had soup, rice, seafood, vegetables and none of the selection I chose was good. Â It was flavorless and expensive. Â I will go back to try their chicken dishes with some kind of noodle. Â Maybe tastier and cheaper too.
Service was great but the food came out of the kitchen slowly. Â No wonder so many ordered ahead. Â The takeout was like an express line. Â
I think they used cut up pork chops in their pork dishes. Â It was thick, leathery, dry and flavorless. I had to squeal it down.
One recommendation: Â If you try the salt/pepper shrimp, you'll love it. Â Crispy shell, very salty, very good. Â Only downside, if you are eating this with say, 4 of your friends, you may need 5 orders of the stuff. Â The shrimp are tiny and shrimply.
Area needs a lot more competition. Â Couldn't hurt. They are such an institution, I've been coming forever, but no improvement since the 80's Â
Although the prices are competitive as in town, the town portions are more than adequate to share. Â The portion of one dish would feed a hungry chlld
OK then, one more warning, the squid ginger onion had about 15 small bites of squid and over 30 slices of ginger. Â What I don't get is, that ginger costs more than squid?!?
Went 3 times this month. Â But willing to try one more time.
Its convenient and 3 stars because the overall experience. It seemed as though the waitresses were new and we waited for our drinks to be refilled and waited for boxes and bags but the food came out quick and the servers seemed to busy I did tip them a little though. Lol The food was good I have had better but it is coveniently located nearby.
Review Source:Dr. Schlacter's Special -- great choice for vegetarians! Made with fresh veggies including snow peas and delicious fried tofu. Could have used more tofu. Unfortunately rice didn't come with it, which is weird for a Chinese restaurant, but as the dish was only about $6, I'm not complaining.
My partner enjoyed his lunch combo with lemon chicken and beef & broccoli.
Accepts credit cards!
The locals seem to like this place, but I was not a huge fan. The prices certainly are low, but I did not find the food very flavorful. Additionally, there are no items on the menu that offer chicken breast. One item I did enjoy was the Dr. Schlacter Special, which is a plate of vegetables with tofu.
Review Source:I lived in hauula for the summer of 2005. I hope laie chop suey is still there!!
I loved the lemon chicken at this place . It's soo flaky& zesty. I miss it soo much. The katsu chicken is good too. This is were all the locals go and eat. The chop suey is not what i expected though i think it was actually authentic chop suey ( who would of thought lol) . If I every go back to the north shore I will definitely go to this little ma and pa eatery. Forget about L&L go to LAIE Chop Suey!!!
