Probably never go here again. Staff sucks but drinks ok. Have a dance floor but mainly its wasted space. Couple of pool tables and always packed. Not enough seating and out dated. DJ was alright. If u want a place cheap and no cover charge and dont care about service. This is the place
Review Source:I came here to kill some time since I couldn't check in yet at Holiday Inn. This place was a bit difficult to find, but the entrance is some stairs that lead towards an underground entrance.
Came right around happy hour so the Mai Tais were only $3 each. I didn't expect much alcohol in my Mai Tai, but I definitely tasted it on the first sip all the way to the last sip. Pool here is only $1, so that was a great way to chill.
One perk about being underground was the air temperature. This place is so much cooler compared to outside and not humid at all.
I save Lava Rock as my go-to when I'm out with a large group. Â I don't think I'd like it much if I were only out with a couple people. Â When I'm with a big group I don't want to have to deal with cover charges and overly packed places where we'll all get separated and won't be able to hang out together. Â Lava Rock never charges a cover and always has reasonably priced drinks.
We get there and the dance floor is rarely popping. Â No problem, I brought my own party! Â Thanks, Lava Rock, for providing a sweet, empty dance floor for my group to take over! Â Always a good time.
Lava Rock is one of those places that doesn't need any bells and whistles to be special. It's a pretty generic bar, tucked inside the biggest tourist trap, the International Marketplace. Yet, with all the tourists that visit the bar, Lava Rock still remains a spot that locals enjoy too. It's one of those places you go for a guaranteed good time. It becomes the spot. The drink specials are great and the bartenders are generous with their pours. A few drinks in and you're off to a great start. The pool tables, the dance floor, the arcade games, the high top tables--it has a little something for every type of bar-goer. The bathrooms aren't the best, but you don't really notice. It's a dive, but it's my dive!
Review Source:1. Great happy hours
2. Nice lounge area with great entertainment - Wii, darts, stage, etc.
3. Decent location (Waikiki International Market)
4. Cute fish aquarium to stare at
Its a little dark and dank feeling, but my take away were the couches to lounge in and the fish aquarium. Doesnt seem to get too crowded with too many tourists so I would hazard to guess that this place wouldn't get too hard to get into during peak drinking hours. Yay!
Shake shake shake your titties in your coconut bra!
I found this bar on yelp because they had a deal. I think it was a half off deal.
1. Great bartender the night I was there.
2. Cold beer, but no Heineken even though there was a GIANT GIANT GIANT Heineken fridge. Such a tease.....
3. Deal
4. Good location. Can walk to other bars near by.
5. No food, but I guess your welcome to bring your own in. (Which of course we did because I get drunk munchies like a mofo) The market place isn't far at all so grab something delicious and stuff your face while you drink.
Good times!
Ashley approved. This place is great!
College kids/dive bar. Â I didn't dig this place at all and I'd avoid it. Â The bathrooms are nasty and had flies buzzing around the urinal; it smelled like a bum was living in there. Â
Drinks are cheap for $3 Mai Tai's (I don't drink Mai Tais but my gf said it was NASTY), $3 Jaeger shots/house Vodka shots/ pina coladas. Â
Come here if you just turned 21, if you are a still drinking vodka out of a plastic handle, or if you just wanna get smashed for cheap.
Lava Rock is such a great divey bar in Waikiki and it stays open until 4am! Its no frills, has pool tables, dart boards and some great people watching. It reminds me a bit of Madd Dog's just a bit smaller, with better music and not as many creeps trying to hit on you. Sure there are some tourists, but not as many as other bars. Service workers and other random people who happen to find it come here. Brought a friend here just to drink, play really bad pool, talk and people watch. If you're out in Waikiki make this your last stop and stumble home!
Review Source:First time coming here was 2weeks ago for NFL Sunday! Happy hour starts at 11am so I was a happy camper with my Lava Flow. It wasn't as large as other places I'm used too but hey for $3 a pop who can complain. No food though. You'd have to go to the food court around the corner and bring it in. Another perk is the check in discount on your first drink! The service was awesome! So my husband and I started doing shot while watching the Green Bay game (mind you my hubby is a Bears fan) anyways I wanted a Hello Kitty but the bartender didn't know how to make one so she Googled it. It was reallg bad! So I told her and she was really cool about it. Gave me another drink and both were on the house! Now thats great service! The place its really clean. They've got pool tables and dart boards. Not too many people during the day idk how it is at night. All in all I would totally recommended this place and hang out here every Sunday (when we dont have our kiddies of course lol)
Review Source:Good place for HH since it is from 11 to 11 with very cheap drink prices from $3 for mai tai and pina colada's. The place itself is very much a dive bar with a mix of locals and tourists since it is right in the middle of the International Market. The lighting is quite dark and they have one pool table to the backside of the bar.
The service was quick as we just ordered our drinks from the bar and brought it over to a table to have a seat by the giant projection screen tv. Good atmosphere to watch a sporting event since Monday night football was being televised during the time we were there plus they also have free wifi which gave them an extra star.
This spot should definitely be on your list if all you are looking for is cheap and strong drinks. We stumbled upon this bar after a suggestion by a co-worker. We spent 2-3 days of a week vacation in here, throwing back mai tai's and blue hawaii's. They also had TV's set up along with a projector to show sporting events.
Happy hour is 11am-11pm. $3 for mai tai's, blue hawaii's, etc. Yum!
The only thing that would make this place better is if they served food. Even apps would add something into the mix!
PS: Did not visit the restrooms, so no idea on the shape of them.
Haa haa had a great time here... Been here too many times, but love the place... I always meet new people and the vibe is so mellow and relaxed compared to other bars.... Dingo and tony were my bartenders... Awesome... Plus they have bl lime... Definitely be back tomorrow night... Hey sports fanatics they have 15 flat screen t.v.s plus a projector screen for all those football games... What more could u ask for in a bar... Btw they have pool tables, dart boards and Wii.... With cheap happy hour from 11am-11pm $3 drinks mai tais, blue hawaii, lava flow, pinacoladas, long island, and, and a ton of beers on draft... Where can u get a long boards in Waikiki for $3.75??? How awesome is that!!!!
Review Source:I absolutely fell in love with this place during my vacation in Oahu. Â In 7 days, we went here 4 times. Â It would've been 5 times but our last evening ended up being in the more "romantic" side. Â Let me count the ways why I love this place so much (this could get lengthy!).
1. Â It's a true dive bar in the heart of Waikiki. Â We almost didn't go in the first night. Â We were walking around International Marketplace and saw a sign for $3 Mai Tais. Â We had just spent almost $25 for 2 drinks at the Sheraton so cheap drinks was encouraging. Â However you have to go downstairs and the place seemed really dead from where we were standing. Â But I'm so glad we went in. Â While the place WAS fairly empty (it was only 9pm on a Friday night), the place was huge with a full bar, dart boards, a Wii set up and 2 pool tables ($1/game or $5 for 6 games). Â Also a large dance floor area that we never saw used (except for us on the last night lol) and a LOT of HDTVs playing ESPN and other sport games and channels (always a + in my book). Â Truly dive-y in the sense that when I first went to the bathroom, I was thinking a snake would come out from the toilet but whatever. Â Clean enough and they always had TP and soap (although the soap was always off the dispenser but the owner admitted to it and we had a good laugh about it).
2. Â It's cheap. Â Every day that have HH specials from 11am-11pm in which a large selection of drinks are $3. Â Cheapest, strongest Mai Tai and Lava Flow I had the whole week! Â You'd think for being so cheap they would be weak but they were SUPER strong! Â The night before hiking Diamand Head, we made the mistake of coming here. Â The next morning was quite rough. Â Anyways, in addition on Sundays they have a deal where EVERYTHING is $4 after 11:30pm (or 10:30?). Â Patron shots included.
3. Â If the cheap drinks don't pull you in, then the bartenders definitely will. Â 3 out of the 4 times we came, we were tended by either Tony (the owner) or Farmer. Â Coolest guys ever who even bought us a round for coming by again. Â Even if they didn't buy us a round, they still would've been cool! Â Easy to talk to and totally chill and made the experience at Lava Rock so much better. Â
4. Â This is definitely a locals hangout. Not a lot of tourists except for the occasional Aussies came down there. Â They have discounts even for others in the hospitality industry and a lot of other bartenders we talked to from other restaurants talked highly about Lava Rock and we would see them there after their shift as well. Â We also saw a live fantasy football draft take place one night and it happened to be all servers/bartenders from Duke's! Â It being a local hangout and us obviously being tourists, people were REALLY nice to us!
5. On the last night we came (a Wednesday), we missed Happy Hour so it was our first time paying full price for drinks. Also the first time we got carded by a bouncer. We came in and found a different bartender who wasn't AS chatty with us so there were a lot of reasons for us to leave early. However, it was the first time we saw the DJ booth being used and the guy behind the booth was playing some awesome music even though there was only a few people in the bar (and no one dancing). Apparently there was a pub crawl that came through earlier. Nevertheless, the DJ was so good that we had to ask for his SoundCloud lol. Check him out: http://soundcloud.com/ct…. That night I heard a house-remixed version of 'Mercy', Swedish House Mafia's 'Save the World', Tiesto's remixed 'Somebody That I Used To Know', and even Adina Howard's 'Freak Like Me' just to name a few. In addition, after the BF told him that we were from the Bay Area (after asking for his SoundCloud like a groupie), he ended his set with E-40's 'Tell Me When To Go" and our whole group was totally DUMB and didn't care that the rest of the people at the bar was looking at us like we were crazy. It was the best way to cap off the night!
Every single time we came, we had a great time. Â This place was a perfect place to unwind after playing tourist all morning and afternoon. Â Highly recommended.
We were here twice on our trip......one was for a little day drinking bar hopping action and the next was a quick start before a night out bar hopping.....yes, there's a little pattern. When on vacation, it's ok to be a lush ;).
They have HH from 11-11pm or something rather. Cheap drinks, good music, chill vibe. Can't really beat that eh?!? If you don't like the dive feel of bars then don't go here. I for one, love dive bars!
Really nice bar/lounge. They had a nice large area. There's a little dance floor and a juke box. They have a wii set up so you can have fun playing tennis drunk. Their drink specials are pretty awesome too. At least for the weekday. Â The drinks were only $3 and they weren't weak. Our bartender for the night was Toni and she was awesome!! We randomly found this bar and we are so glad we did. Definitely coming back before we leave the island. Four stars because they could have had the DJ start sooner and free pool tables would have been nice.
Review Source:Security staff & bartenders are so funny!!!! Good place to chill and get away from the daily grind. Pool tables definitely a plus!!!! Three olives & Pinnacle selection is awesome! Ive searched everywhere and they are the only ones that have grape!!! Bartenders are very sweet. We have met the owner quite a few times and he always stops to talk story and make everyone feel welcomed.Big Beautiful aquarium, nice to watch and have a few.....super relaxing. Also my husband and I love to play Wii on their flat screen. ...always good laughs!
Review Source:I came here during the Pub Crawl last year and was probably my favorite stop. Â It's located in the heart of Waikiki in the International Market Place. Â It's kinda hidden, but once you get downstairs (watch your head) you'll have a lot fun! The bar tenders are on it when mixing your drinks. Â They start off strong and keep it coming.
The dance floor has plenty of room and the music keeps it going all night. Â They play a good mix for all types. Â
The billiards are my favorite here. Plenty of room!
Lava Rock has many specials every night and when you check in with Yelp, you can even get another coupon on your phone. Â Not bad.
Because this place is part of the Pub Crawl, you can many tourists stopping by and crowding up the place. But don't worry...they'll leave within 20 minutes! ;)
Oh Lava Rock Lounge. Back in the day this place was Da Dawg House, and oh the memories I have of that place. Together with Bobby G's that used to be almost right next to Dawg House.
I've been here two or three times, it's not a lot of times compared to when it was Da dawg house and I would run here every weekend, but it is something. The interior is pretty much the same (I think), I still enjoy the music and the drinks. The bathrooms are still in the back and still nasty.
I just wonder what happened to all the people that used to go here? I've never seen this place crowded, except from when the pubcrawls crawl through the bar.
But i'm not gonna hate on it, because the location brings back memories and oh are those worth remembering.
Great place to kill some time!
Awesome happy hour. Â Strong drinks mixed reasonably well. Â This is a dive as it should be. Â The bartenders are friendly and its a fun place to be early in the day. Â
Taking a couple stars for the noise level. Â When I'm sitting in there with 3 other people the crappy music doesn't need to be blasting so loud. Â It also gets very crowed at night when the younger crowd starts coming in. Â Can't blame them or the bar really, the drinks are cheap. Â Just not my kind of place when the sun goes down.
If you're walking around that area in the afternoon or early evening, it's a great place to stop and have a few for under $10.
Always a fun time at Lava Rock! Â
I saw the deal that you have on yelp but ive decided that Tony always takes care of the "crew" so, im not going to purchase the deal and pay regular price for things to put more money in your pocket!
Oh...and I heard that getting the fifth star makes drinks stronger! Thanks buddy!
We were here july 2011, walked thru international market and found this small place and they had happy hour prices which were great!!!!! 3 dollars for a mixed drink and let me tell you, i had one drink and was tipsy the girl that made my drink was so good at making our drinks and we didnt have to have addtional drinks!!! lol was very laid back, you can play wii, pool table, darts! you have a small place out in front to sit also! thanks lava rock lounge for cheap prices on our vacation and a great drink!
Review Source:i know it's in the heart of waikiki and no one wants to get drunk there and drive...
BUT let's remember...
you shouldn't be drinking and driving anyways...
cab your butt over here!
seriously...i don't understand how this place isn't bumping outta control!
sundays $3 EVERYTHING!!! (12am- close)
crown, patron, irish car bombs, beers....
mondays 50% off your tab (industry night)
went down with 3 ppl, got drunk, bill was $62!!!
yeah...no kitchen, but i think they let you bring in your own food...
pool table, darts, wii, jukebox, a plethora of cheap alcohol :D
the bartenders there are these big, bouncer type looking guys...but they're cool as #$@^...
While exploring the International Market, we noticed a sign advertising $3.00 drink and so I bust out my Yelp App and conduct research. Â From the reviews, I expect to find an empty basement, with nice service, and dirt cheap beverages. Â That's exactly what I found. Â This place is tucked away underground and so maybe not many people know of it. Â But the drinks are $3.00 and this includes a nice selection of beers on tap as well mixed drinks.
Probably not the best place if you're looking to party with an energetic atmosphere because the lounge is nearly empty. Â However, if you want to hang out with friends and chat over nice cold beverages and not have to worry about crowds, this is the place to go.
A dive in the middle of the market place.
Great happy hour specials on drinks!
Wifee and I shot some pool and had a couple of the drink specials, and tripped of the BowChickaBowBow layout of this basement known as the Lava Rock Lounge. Â It was pretty dead inside that evening, but not dead enough for that guy and one mysterious hooker looking hooker to go to the restroom at the same time and this was no cowinkydink
Nevertheless, this grimy spot may be too disgusting for some yet too cool for others.
How do you get kicked out of two bars in Hawaii? Â Well for some reason, I did. Â I guess it was because of the people I went in with (two haoles from Montana that I just met from a different bar) didn't fit in well. Â So we stubbled upon this lounge and the bouncer was cool enough to let us in even though one of the guys I was with said something lame to him. Â But the bouncer just laughed and let us through. Â Â
Lava Rock Lounge is a cool place to drink and chill at. Â That's about it. Â When we entered, we immediately went to the bar and ordered shots. Â I had to use the restroom, so the bartender pointed me to the location. Â You have to go up a short flight of stairs behind the two pool tables. Â There weren't too many people in there and there was a cover band playing. Â The band was cool, played good songs, and the atmosphere was pretty chill. Â This lounge is in the middle of the marketplace. Â It's like a dark cave when you enter in here. Â No cover charge as well. Â Sweet! Â Â Â Â
So we stood at the bar and kept singing along to what the band was playing. Â Yeah we were loud, but we weren't dangerous. Â We were having a good time with our drinks and the band was playing some good songs. Â We even bought the band a couple of shots and they were totally cool with that. Â Then the next minute, the bartender said that he just poured us our last shots. Â So basically, they cut us off on alcohol. Â Total bummer! Â Why? Â We have no idea. Â We weren't picking fights or cussing people out. Â We were just loud and kept singing along. Â I guess they want their patrons to talk softly and not sing. Â LAME. Â I guess that's why it was pretty dead. Â I don't care if you're a cool bartender. Â If your patrons are having fun in a safe manner, why punish them? Â Serve them more drinks! Â They'll make the place fun and lively. Â Heck, it might even attract more customers if anything. Â Why bring a live cover band if you want the place dead and quiet? Â I don't get it. Â
I guess this is a cool place if you want to be mellow, read a book, study for finals, and have a quick drink. Â But for me, I think not. Â I like to drink in a FUN bar/lounge.
This place is in the middle of the Market Place. The bf and I saw the sign for $3 drink specials and went to check it out. We got a couple drinks and chatted it up with the bartender. She was really nice and gave us some good tips on bars to check out.
It was pretty dead when we were there but we didn't mind. After HH, we came back later in the night for a night cap and a live band was playing. We stayed for a couple covers and then made our way back to the hotel.
Cool dive bar with good drink specials.
We love JT!
The bar is a total dive, but right up our alley. The drink prices were perfect (hello $3 well drinks, Mai Tai's, and beer!) and JT made us a bunch of new shots.
They have Wii, pool tables, and a dance floor. We went on a Monday night and the place was dead (outside of a few regulars), but what did we care?!?! We made our own party. We played Nudie Photo Hunt and a bunch of Wii.
Plain and simple, if you dig dive bars, come here! The price is right. The crowd is right. The vibe is right.
I love bars with pool tables and cheap HH drinks. And when you put this together with Hawaii, it's fantastic squared.
We met a couple of locals on a sunset Catamaran cruise that know the bartender here. I heard it's a good late night spot but when we got there it was pretty dead. More room for us!
Still sandy from the beach, this was a perfect place to have a potent $3 Mai Tai and relax before dinner.
Thanks, JT! Â That was the best Mai Tai! I have a feeling I'll be back for another. Or 3.
This bar is located in the International Market Place, a tourist trap in itself, yet somehow this is an oasis in the middle of the desert. Â I walked by this place with a friend; we were both looking to drink inexpensively in Waikiki (ironic) and she pulled me in because of the drink specials. Â I thought i'd regret going in there, boy was I wrong.
This bar has awesome drink specials that vary every night. Â $3 AMFs? Â I'm game! Â Bartenders are excellent offering drink recommendations and modifications to drinks. Â No cover unless a big nam band is playing. Â There is no kitchen so outside food is permitted.
Depending on the night there is a DJ with a dancefloor remixing music videos. Â Thursdays are live band night. Â There's also free pool, free Wii, and darts. Â HD tvs equipped with satellite tv for all the channels.
Previous reviews have pointed out this is VERY local friendly. Â Locally operated and owned; it's a place for Waikiki workers to relax after work. Â This bar can be jam packed one minute and the next empty, but honestly who cares? Â I go to this bar for the staff and atmosphere, not to drink uncomfortably in a packed place paying for over priced drinks.
In closing this is my go to bar in Waikiki. Â Heck sometimes i'll go into Waikiki JUST to drink at this bar. Â Good mix of locals, tourists, and military (but not military d-bags). Â Highly recommended. Â
Hours are from 10am-4pm.
Lava Rock Lounge is definitely a cleaned up version of the old Dawg House days. Tony and Toni, the owners, are great and very supportive of local workers and have offered their spot for some fun team building events. They have pool tables, darts and Wii, good drinks, music.
I think it is funny for someone to give anything in Waikiki a one star because tourist go there. F'n ridiculous. WTF do you expect in Waikiki? This place is locally owned and operated and VERY local friendly. Hospitality night is Tuesdays - drink specials for hotel workers. Yeah I kind of miss the Dawg House days with Bono and the rats....but not that much.
Also, it's a bar, some days will be better than others.
tourist trap!
We were led here by a lady while walking along Kalakaua Ave. We heard no cover and $3 heineken and well drinks.
We just wanted to check it out- but mostly because some of us really needed to use the bathroom.
Yeah, so it was filled with tourists dancing with their dslrs hanging on their necks. Old 90s music playing. Oh yah, their stamp to get in is a sad face. Right .. makes perfect sense ... I heard the drinks are weak- even the heineken.
The only redeeming thing about this place was they had a Wii set up. Woo. Fun times
We came, we looked, we used the restroom, and we left.
