Yuck.  Have been eating here for about 6 years and have watched this place get worse and worse.  Last night, my Szechwan Vegetables  with garlic sauce had no taste and were actually slimy.  There wasn't enough soy sauce to give this any flavor.  Waiter couldn't care about anything at our table and never uttered a word.  This is not the same place.  As I said, yuck.  Will not be going back.

The décor is authentic and really cool (a giant fan on the wall!) and the service is super nice. There are plenty of options for food without making it overwhelming. The tofu and its blend of sauces are to die for, and the stir-fry, whether beef or vegetable, is fool-proof!

If you are in the Highlan Park area and want a nice, laid-back, unique chinese restaurant for lunch or dinner, this is the place to go!

My wife and I stopped here before an appointment at Highland Park Hospital, which is just a couple minutes away. The service was fast and exceptionally friendly.  The staff takes pride in their establishment ("Open 28 years, no MSG!"), and it shows. They're so hospitable that when we walked in, I felt like we were being invited into their home. My Governor's Chicken was delicious. We'll definitely be back.

This is an update. I've gone here a couple more times since my first review. The food quality  seems to impress me as time goes by. As far as the aesthetics goes its all the same as before. Try their food, its really good and I love the people that work here too! They are really great!

Nope, definitely not impressed. I came here by word of Yelp and nothing I ate reflected the reviews this restaurant received. I gave it a 2 star because the wonton soup was pretty good. Other than that, the Beef fried rice and the Governors Chicken were merely edible out of hunger. The chicken was advertised as meaty...FALSE! it was crispy breading with a sweet, somewhat spicy sauce. The "Beef" fried rice was extremely oily and I found about 3 pieces of wobbly beef in the mixture of peas and carrots...The service was, however, undeniably great.

Little Szechwan was delicious, service was friendly and fast.  My water and tea glasses were never empty.  They had a lot of daily specials, but we didn't try any.  Recommendations:

    Appetizers:
    + scallion pancakes
    + pot stickers
+ crispy tofu (very unique, I had never had anything like it before... came with a thick & creamy garlicky sauce... so yummy!)

    Entrees:
+ Mu Shu Pork (always better when they make the mu shu burritos for you tableside! mmm!!!
+ Three treasures (beef, chicken, scallops. these are a few of my favorite things)
+ Kung Pao beef (perfect spice level.)

I will definitely go back when I'm in HP and have a taste for Chinese at a sit down place.

We ordered lunch from here yesterday. The egg drop soup was amazing and possibly the eggiest egg drop soup I've had before.

The rest of the food was good but extremely oily. I've never had Chinese food so oily before. They really need to lay off the oil.

Probably won't order from here again given the other options in the area.

Wow. No.  Expensive, small portions and not good.  Mongolian Beef was not edible.  My wife had two bites and now it's just sitting in the fridge waiting for me to be extra hungry.  The soup was good.  The sauce for the sweet and sour pork was very yellow and not tasty.  It is certainly not the worst chinese food I've ever had, but right now I can't remember where was worse.  The portions were about the smallest for Chinese food I've ever seen.  The soup was $9 and the same size as other places that have soup for $4 or $5.

The more expensive the suburb is the worse deal the food is, I guess.  I can't believe this place was rated #1 on Yelp.

We've been going to Little Szechwan for years now.  We typically order one spicy dish and one not so spicy. The Empress Chicken is wonderful and the Shrimp with Lobster sauce is very good--not so spicy. Waitress staff is attentive but not doting. Yum!

This is not your typical Chinese takeout!

Our extensive order was hot and ready for pickup in fifteen minutes and each of the dishes, despite being packed in plastic containers, had the visual appeal of something carefully plated by a chef.  The vegetables were vibrantly colorful and cooked to perfection as were my husband's meatier entree choices.  A mistake on the order at pickup was immediately rectified with many sincere apologies and a complimentary bowl of (delicious) soup.

Delightful, friendly staff and an extensive, delicious menu makes this a sure winner in Highland Park.  No more soggy, monochromatic, MSG-laden Chinese food for me!  I'm getting the real deal, made with skill, from Little Szechwan.

This place began to serve lunch recently and I decided to give it a try. Ordered Governor's Chicken and it came with steam rice, hot and sour soup and an egg roll. The place is pretty empty with only one customer, so I decided to have it to go. The highlight of the day is the Hot & Sour soup; very tasty with fresh slice mushroom. The chicken is made to order and taste fine but not that much different from other Chinese restaurants. The egg roll is small and just O.K.. This lunch lunch special is $6.95, $7.60 with tax. Overall, it's not a bad lunch, but the portion is not very large.

Can't go wrong here but you do need to know what to order.  Scallion pancakes, cold sesame noodle, lettuce wraps, soups...their appetizers are a plus. Egg drop soup is amazing. My son loves it too and he will even eat the tomatoes inside, which is saying a lot for a 3 year old. I think the entrees are delish as well but they've changed over the years. I still enjoy their appetizers to this day.

Service is attentive and great as well. I always got free street parking, I think it is free either after a certain time or for a certain time period; enough for dinnertime. I always go either early dinner like 5pm or late dinner like 8pm usually not during the dinner rush which can get pretty hectic.

Cool high chairs for kids! :)

I have no idea how this place was rated so well by others.  The food was the worst Chinese that my boyfriend and have probably ever eaten and the service was awful.  I vowed never to go back.

Excellent. Friendly, informative staff, wonderful food. We had the Taiwanese Chicken Rolls, Chef's Special Dim Sum, and one of the evening's specials - eggplant with shrimp and basil. We've eaten here and done take-out many times - always outstanding food

I usually order by phone and pick my foods 15 minutes on my way home. My favorites are governor's chicken and szechaun prawn ;)
The owners are very friendly and the restaurant has a very nice atmosphere.

I've been going here since before I can remember. It's a small, unassuming spot in a North Shore suburb, but man oh man, is it fantastic. It's some of the best Chinese I've ever had, and like the good Jew that I am, I've sure had a lot of Chinese food. I've ordered basically the same thing every time (I'm boring like that), which is an appetizer and soup, but sometimes I pile on an entree or split one/multiple, depending on how many people are with me. Unless you're a vegetarian, I strongly recommend the potstickers. They're not too greasy, and the mixture of meat and chives is just perfect. I also can't recommend the hot and sour soup enough. It's not typical hot and sour soup you'd find at, say, Panda Express (you know, almost gummy and weird). It's a thin but VERY flavorful broth, filled with meat and veggies. I don't know what the spice blend is, but it's delicious and reminds me of growing up, so that's two pluses right there. Easily the best hot and sour soup I've ever had. Other dishes are swell, too, like the governor's chicken, ma po tofu, sesame noodles, chicken sizzling rice...I could go on and on. The service is not overbearing but is still friendly. Even if they don't know you by name, you will feel welcome the moment you walk in.

Quick vignette that explains why they rock:

When my brother was first born, four years ahead of me, LS was opening. My parents took my older siblings, including the baby, to the restaurant for the first time. On the way out, there was a heavy downpour. My mom loves to recall how, since my family forgot an umbrella, the staff took an umbrella of their own and escorted my mom, who was carrying my brother, into the car. That's service.

Would give 5 star to their service. Very friendly and attentative.

But 3 star for food. Crispy tofu appetizer was good but sauce is too salty. Main dishes (fish, eggplant) were both too greasy & salty.

Very good Chinese and they deliver too!  I was impressed with all of the dishes and my kids loved the pot stickers.  We will absolutely be ordering from there again.  The dishes were very fresh and the service on the phone was very, very good.

Chinese is probably my favorite variety of food, and I am constantly on the hunt for the perfect Chinese takeout restaurant.  Little Szechwan has consistently provided me with fresh, delicious Chinese and Mongolian specialities...their menu has allowed me to be spontaneous and venture outside of my "sesame chicken box" because everything I had there is so well prepared.

Their prices are reasonable..most meals run $8-$15...which isn't too bad considering the portions are sizable and more than enough to feed two people.  Dining in has always been a pleasant experience...their dining room is cute and smallish...usually filled with families.  My favorite part of dining in?  The fortune cookies are delivered in a smoking (with the magic of dry ice) dragon plate!

For a perfect meal for two, I would recommend...the mongolian beef and honey garlic chicken (not on the menu--it is breaded all-white meat chicken--as is all of their chicken), crab rangoons, veggie spring rolls and hot and sour soup.  All spicey dishes are cooked to your level of hotness (1-5).

In summary...this place is on my speed dial...and I now live 30 minutes away.
