What a disappointing bar filled with rude, oblivious staff. My friend and I got all gussied up to see Great Gatsby and decided to grab a drink after the show. Sure, we didnt really look like Lucky 13 patrons as we were all flappered out but we thought we would give it a shot anyways. We head down to Lucky 13 and its medium packed. We are able to walk right up to the bar and grab a seat. There were two women behind the bar and one man. I had cash in my hand and wait patiently to order my drink...and wait...and wait. Two people leave to my right and new customers come up next to me and the man goes right to them and takes their order, despite the fact we have been waiting for over 10 minutes now. We make eye contact with the bartender and he says you guys are next after the people down here, and gestures to some people way down at the end of the bar. So we say ok. He heads down there, while the other two gals bar tending walk past us at least 8 more times. When he starts to head back our way I lean in to give our order and he walks right past me to the complete opposite end if the bar and helps people down there. Rude. There is no way they didn't see us. We were smack dab in the middle for over 15 minutes, cash in hand, ready to order. I could understand if the place was slammed but come on...needless to say we left and went to hobnob next door, who had the same size crowd, and served us in 1 minute. Not likely we will return to this place.
Review Source:I'm updating because I've been here three or four times since that last review, and the service was actually pretty good. There are some really cool bartenders. One especially was a chick that was working in the afternoon. Didn't catch her name, but she let me put out my flyers in the bar and gave me a drink.
The night staff and doorman on my more recent visits were very nice too. I don't know if it was coincidental or they've actually made changes, but this improvement in service definitely makes the place more appealing. +1 star.
Good bar. Great beer. You can order from Scolari's next door, and they will deliver it. We've gone in there with burritos, and she was so mellow about us eating them there. The back patio is big, and lovely in the summer. Beer and hanging out in the back patio at Lucky 13 is something to be done at least once in the summer. I feel like going there now...control yourself Tomahawk, control! I'm going to take one star off because it can be a little "too cool" in there sometimes (Oh No! Too Cool! Ahhhhh :), but It's a great place to hangout, so what the hell.
Review Source:It's a dive bar so you've got to rate it against other dive bars. In terms of beer selection - best on the island. They've got pool, skeeball, pinball and a back deck for warm summer evenings. The bartenders are cool and Scolari's delivers over amazing burgers and daily specials to soak up the booze. It's a large enough space  to not feel overly crowded but not so big that you feel like you're sitting in an empty auditorium.
Review Source:Lucky 13 is the best bar/hangout on the Island. The jukebox is pure gold. The beer selection is beautiful. Centrally located in Alameda.
The owners are cool enough to allow patrons to bring food into the bar. The restaurant next door (Scolari's) actually delivers the food.
Happy Hour is a great deal.
Awesome beer selection! Pliny, Old Rasputin, and other goodies on tap. Only thing that killed the experience was the live band. I don't mind music, but they were so loud that it was hard to even hear my friend sitting next to me. I've been to bars with loud music but they really take it to the next lever.
Review Source:Looks nice from the outside. Inside was just very loud because of the music on a weekday. I had to scream my order to the bartender. No TV. Bartender of that night checks everyone's ID. I could understand since I get ID checked all the time, but then after few other people who look really 40's get their ID checked, it just got tedious. The beer that me and my friend got were foamy, I thought it was just us, but as the night continued, every cup poured were just foamy. That sucks for a $5 pint. I don't think they have many or at all bottled beer, I'm unsure but I didn't see a fridge at the bar.
Review Source:What a great neighborhood bar. Â I finally went into this little gem. Si many beers, so little time. A great place to sample something different, a great place to meet friends for a drink, play some pool or get to know somebody on a first date. Â Don't like the big windows looking out onto Park St & Encinal fool you, it's a different environment inside. Â Everybody is welcome @ Lucky 13.
Review Source:I was here last night for a birthday get together with a large party on a Saturday, about 11 of us. Before we even made it in the door the bouncer was on a power trip. Think mall security guard that takes his job way too seriously. He didn't let three of our party in stirring up a huge string of confrontations from the get go, including arguments with people cell phone filming arguments.
It was just becoming ridiculous and for what? The bar had a responsibility to protect itself from what bars need to, but the way they went about it was absolutely terrible and drama inducing.
Because of this, our group was separated with a portion of us on the street, and two were pulled over for being drunk, by Alameda PD. I want to stress that is obviously not the bars fault. It escalated to an arrest, fight, and the bouncers running to hold down our friend while the cops arrested him. Let the cops do their own job and don't rush to help beat our friend up who is obviously, not doing so well tonight.
I just feel that instead of encouraging everyone to have a good time at this place, or providing a space for us to drink we were punished from the door on. Have your reasonable precautions, but don't be on a mission "to get us". If we had all been allowed in, perhaps nothing would have escalated, no dramatic arguments and we would have had a good time. Because we didn't.
Great selection of beers and very cool vibe. Â I bump this up to 4 stars ever since the bathrooms have been upgraded to actual urinals and not the stanky tub/trough that was just disgusting before. Â Triple Karmeliet on tap for 8 bucks that is ice cold and in the proper stemware!
Crowd changes as the night progresses and runs the whole spectrum. Â Bartenders are super cool. Â They have wifi... so... you know, if you need to lose an afternoon telecommuting (yeah right)... they have you covered. Â I doubt anyone has ever gotten any work done there... but hey, it's there in the event you need to answer that one email that will shield you from anyone getting suspicious that you are really just playing hooky.
I love coming here when I'm in town. Its just my kind of place. The beer selection is awesome and the outdoor patio is really nice to have a smoke and a drink. I actually was in town for last years NYE and we decided to celebrate it there. They were serving whiskey and hot apple cider on the patio and man were they soooo good!! Definitely something I will not forget. The service is a hit or miss. When I went on NYE the service was a bit a rude and off but this last time I went the bartender was really nice and made my drinks perfect. Cant wait to go again:)
Review Source:There are 3 things that make a great dive-y bar.
1. Bar snacks
2. Awesome bartenders
3. Ambiance
Lucky 13 has all 3
Give me my free popcorn, have Amber make me one of her kick ass bloody marys and let me hang out on the patio on a beautiful weekend afternoon and Lucky 13 can pretty much make my weekend.
Alameda I love that you have so many of my favorite places to spend my drinking time at...I just wish Amber was a bartender at all of them!
Excellent spot for our softball game after party.
Drinks were plentiful, bathrooms were operable, and food kept coming in via delivery from next door.
I didn't get a chance to play skeeball but I had just as good a time swirling in my seat, chatting, and trying to understand the terrible poetry in the ladies bathroom.
If I'm out on Park St for a drink, chances are you'll find me here. No, I'm not sleeved with tattoos or live a rockabilly lifestyle. But I appreciate a place that has a great beer selection, lets dogs in, and has plenty of room to get lost in the crowd (or your drink) and has no-nonsense bartenders, all for a fair price.
Ever since you can bring your Scolari's order here to eat, the crowd seems to be different every time. I'm not there to pick up on guys though, so it just makes for great people watching. They've got free live music every so often, and parking isn't so horrible since it's not on the heart of Park Street, you can usually get lucky on the surrounding streets.
Man what's up with the HIPSTER, gotta wear tight tee shirts to see who has the most tattoo's attitude. (customers and bartenders alike).
And if you don't look like one of them get the F out and by the way don't forget to tip. AND YEP, cash only Mutha F a's.
They do have good music (sometimes too loud for slow days/evenings) and Scolaris next door is fun to have.
The patio is nice to have.
That's it and for the Island you don't have much choice for good alternative music atmosphere.
Dudes. Music is WAAYYY TOOO LOUD. ON ANY night, let alone a Sunday evening at 9pm where everyone I saw was shouting there conversations to the person right next to them. Bartender, took a while to notice, wanted to finishes her conversation with seated person while I waited....and waited... not rocket science, it amazes me that place like this stay in business.
With that said, it had nice long tables, and some cool looking games in the back corner, but again, I don't care if I have a seat when I'm assaulted by the music on 11 and it's heavy metal/punk....Sunday night folks...not saying we got to knit sweaters, and listen to the light soothing sounds of Kenny G, but you gotta be freaking kidding me.
Won't be back. * sidenote- Scalaris next door has really great food, fresh and flavourful...do yourself a favor of eating it there or out in their front area and not at Lucky 13.
I've yet to visit the original SF location. However, this place won me over with fierce love at first sight.
This place has:
-A patio
-An extensive tap selection of mostly quality (and predominantly local) beers at good prices (OK, they do have the required PBR on tap because they probably want to meet some hipster quota)
-Entertaining graffiti on the red bathroom walls
-Lots of people in leather
-Awesome punk, classic rock music
-A random Iggy Pop action figure hidden among many black cats
-An agreement with Scolari's for delivery
Dare I say that I love this place.
Love coming here. Â Solid beer selections on tap. Â Bummer it's cash only, but good for them.
Scolari's next door serves food late at the bar; it's BOMB food yo, everything there is delicious. Â Check it out if you're ever in need of awesome fresh food.
The photo booth was actually working Saturday night which was shockingly wonderful. Â Ample seating if you get there early enough in the evening.
I'm updating because I've had a number of very pleasurable and tasty experiences here since the stream of nasty drinks they tried to pump me full of on that fateful day in December of '09.
Bigger and brighter than the SF version, thanks to the nice wall of windows opposite the bar. It's not the cleanest joint, probably highlighted by all that light, but it's not bad. I also find it a little friendlier than SF's Lucky 13. Plus, an outdoor patio! Digging all the black cat collectibles behind the bar too.
Bonus points for being able to get Scolari's, the restaurant next door, to deliver your food to you here.
This place rocks! Â Patrick the bartender (looks like Brian Wilson of the Giants) is totally cool. Â So is the other bartender with with the tats and piercings (forgot her name). Â Patrick bought me and my cousins shots (Washington Apples) and he shared them with the bouncers. Â Then the other bartender bought us a shot. Â We had to go across the street to Juanitas to sober up. Â They let dogs in here so the place is a bit eclectic. Â Good selection of beer including PBR.
Food can be had but it comes from two doors down. Â Burgers, Italian sandwiches, et al. Â Good for soaking up the beer and hard stuff.
Much better vibe compared to Hob Nob.
Luck 13 has been my local spot since I moved to Alameda, and it has never disappointed. A full bar with drinks at a fair price with quality beers on tap like Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig. The ambience is mostly Rock and Roll, with a nice Juke-Box selection, a pool-table, a few arcade games, a photo booth, and a dance floor on thursday nights. There is a great seating section adjacent to the bar for groups, and a nice outdoor patio in the back for smoking. The bartenders don't mess around, and neither does security. I've seen plenty evidence of both.
All in all this is the best bar in Alameda for 20's and 30's looking to have a seriously good time. If you decide to visit I highly recommend Scolari's next door. One of the best burgers you'll find the East Bay.
CASH ONLY!
But they have a $2 ATM
I'm new to the Bay Area and was brought in by the pizza in the window. Â I walked in and got the pizza and one of their specials - their spicy chicken/waffles, all to go. Â While I was waiting on the chicken, they offered me the pizza.
Wow, it was great! Â it was a white pizza with spinach, and soo good! Â The crust was amazing from one end to the other.
While I ate it in their little kitchen outfit next door to the bar, I was watching other amazing gourmet dishes head out to the bar. Â I was envious of the recipients, whoever they may be . . .
I couldn't wait to get home and chow down on the fried chicken, which was sitting on the waffles. Â It ended up to be an amazing mix of sweet and savory! Â I vanquished it without much regard to many of my manners that were instilled me from birth, as it was sooo good. Â I live only 10 minutes away, and that is all it can take for fried chicken, but this stayed crispy. Â I'm thinking it was a combination of the great batter, pan frying and deep frying. Â Next time I have to ask.
The waffles were toasted in such a way that they stayed crispy and tender. Â They were like thin Belgian waffles.
I just finished this dish and my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
Who knew that such a great menu of specials would compliment a dive bar, but I guess that's what you get in the Bay Area. Â I will definitely be frequenting this bar in the future to sample their other specials, and what I see to be a great beer selection!
Peace
Great beer selection on tap and in bottles. The eatery next door delivers tasty (if slightly overpriced) food to your bar stool. Staff is friendly. But I must register 2 major complaints:
1. The music is obnoxiously loud here. No one is dancing. In fact, most people are trying to talk. Could we turn the music down to a reasonable level maybe?
2. Cash only. If you're going to be cash only, don't sell draft beers for more than $5. It's insulting. Obviously, we're saving the establishment some overhead cost or hassle by circumventing the whole credit card scene. How about passing along the savings to customers? Pliny is great, but $8? 8 FRICKIN' DOLLARS AND I CAN'T USE MY DEBIT CARD? Seriously, what's going on there?
I honestly wasn't expecting much from this place when my friends invited me to go for a drink after dinner. When I walked in and saw what there was on tap, I just about lost it. No Bud. No Miller. No Coors - Halleluiah!!! What they do have on tap - Blind Pig, Pliny, Racer5, Stone IPA, Old Rasputin among others...
Downside to this place - cash only... even the jukebox.
Would I go back? With cash in hand!!
A 5th star would be earned by added a shuffleboard table. But, that's a minor knock.
One of the better beer selections around with bartenders that can "talk beer". Tell them what you like and they'll drop a shot glass of something to sample.
Make sure to grab food from next door to go with your beer!
This is my spot during the day drinking hours. Â Good spot to eat the bites from next door while sipping on a nice cold pint of any of there really good beers on tap. Â
Excellent selection of beers from Hoegaarden, Pliny the Elder, Old Rasputin, Scrimshaw, and many more. Â $4 for my Hoegaarden during the day, and most of the bartenders are chill and attentive. Â They have a jukebox full of classic "drink your whiskey and beer" tracks, along with plenty of old school pin ball machines, skee ball, and of course the pool table. Â The outdoor is excellent for those warm summer nights, and for all the lush lovers who love to light their cigarette while feeling the steepness of their buzz.
Its a cash only spot but there ATM is located in the back so your not totally inconvenienced. Â Definitely a chill spot with plenty of seating, plenty of liquor choices, and plenty of eye candy serving the drinks. Â Your day could use a few hours spent here. Trust
Lol, Lucky times. The official after party spot to our softball games played in Alameda recently. It really is a fun place to meet up with friends and have a cocktail or two. I've been here twice now and both times were so fun!
They have skee-ball, a pool table, arcade games and a patio. A full bar, attentive bartenders, a handsome security guard and some awesome murals. They have ample seating everywhere, fun jukebox and gets packed with fun. What else does a girl need?
Two different Lucky 13's in a 3-day span...awesome!
I like the patio area because they let me ruin my lungs out there. The graffiti in the restroom makes for some fun reading. I wish I had a marker to add my quips. Â
Great place to unwind after a long day of eating and drinking and pretending to watch softball.
*Cash Only* - booo
