Looks nice from outside. Food is bad and service was slooow. Hostess looked like she was hungover or simply didn't care/lazy. They (hostess) even refused a table of seven people when they could have accommodated by simply moving one table. Don't go here. It's bad. Â We went on July 5. Owner should take a hard look at what is going on there. Â Not good. Our
Waitress was good. Sorry you got a crumy tip but find another place and you will mop up.
Rude GM. We confirmed with our bartender before ordering that we had a http://restaurant.com certificate, she said that was fine. When we went to check out (different bartender) she had to ask the GM and he refused to honor it despite that first bartender said no problem. Â He said it had restrictions despite that they were not listed on the certificate (did not count towards drinks). Other http://restaurant.com certificates list day or time restrictions or if it does not include alcohol. Â Drinks were ok... I've certainly had better and more creative. Â We would have gone somewhere else if we knew we couldn't use the certificate. The GM didn't even try to have a civil conversation, I could understand if we hadn't been given the green light at the beginning but to be treated so rude and condescendingly... I'm not a fan. We had gotten food here in the past that was decent, but this experience was a deal breaker... Apologetic mistake is different than being condescending and rude.
Review Source:Having a beer in a old church. Â Priceless. Â Unfortunately I had dinner with a few co-workers and it was not pretty. Â I got a wrap and it tasted like the flavor had been left in the kitchen. Â My co-worker got a poboy that had 5 shrimp. Â They claimed in the menu that these shrimp were caught locally, I guess they had a bad day shrimping. Â Bad service, bad food but good beer.
Review Source:Came here by accident several years when I was in town for work. I had the opportunity to go back to Charleston again for work so figured I'd try it again. Ended up coming with several co-workers for a late dinner and drinks. Â We came on a Tuesday night which was trivia night but we didn't play. We should have though as we unofficially played along and did pretty good. Definitely made for a fun evening of getting to know your co-workers! But the beer selection was decent and they had good drink specials. Everybody ended up with different meals and I don't recall any complaints. I had the fish tacos which were alright after being spoiled by versions in So Cal. Â My only compliant was the parking but that happens often in that section of town.. Overall ill definitely be back if only for the atmosphere..
Review Source:The best things about this place: Â
-great location relative to the market
-beautiful stained glass windows, vaulted exposed ceiling, and a fun atmosphere
-the market burger is very good and the fries have Cajun seasoning--which give them a little kick
The Bad:
-the booths are for really tall people. Â I'm 5'7" and my feet didn't touch the ground when sitting in our booth
-I loved they have a made-to-order salad on the menu--but don't be fooled, no matter what you select, you will get romaine hearts & only cheddar. Â
Overall: Â if you like burgers--it's worth a try for the atmosphere...otherwise, find a better place (there are plenty to choose from!).
I wanted to like this place, I really did. Â The food was tasty, the fact that the restaurant is located in an old church is nice, and the extra amenities of having a TV was a bonus. Â Even the prices for food were certainly acceptable.
However, I can't seem to get past the slow pace of the service. Â It seemed like it took a month of Sundays to get my food ordered and served. Â I timed it to be about 15 minutes from the time I received my water and hard cider to the time I was actually able to order a cup of she-crab soup and some shrimp and grits. Â The restaurant wasn't even busy then!
My first time at Mad River was for the Superbowl and it was way better than the other places we checked out around the area. First off the booths all have their own t.v. Those tvs are a little small but they're right there and save me some squints! Besides that they have larger tvs above the bar and a huge projector screen too. The crowd here was pretty good here too. Nothing like you'll see in a major sports bar in a larger city but at least these guys were cheering and I swear I saw a few high fives.
I've also visited on trivia night and man was that a blast! At first trivia sounded a little lame but they really hosted it well with sound effects, a couple free drinks, an entertaining DJ and MC, and last but not least a $500 grand prize to the winner! Best thing was it was free to play! I'll definitely be back this Tuesday.
All in all this place gets my stamp of approval. The sports atmosphere was much better than the other places around (Wild Wings, a couple on Kings st) and trivia kicked butt! I'll be back
I was first introduced to this church-turned-bar on a carriage ride on my first visit to Charleston several years ago, and have been obsessed with stepping foot inside. I've since been twice on separate occasions. If you're visiting Charleston, it's definitely worthy of checking out. The music was loud, top-40 mixes both times I went (both Saturday nights). There is room for dancing, and plenty of comfy booths, as well as long tables along the center. The crowd is largely college-coed in the main...um, sanctuary (?), but I saw smaller groups of people in their early 30's actually holding conversations in the side room, and an eclectic mix at the outside bar (which had space heaters, and was tolerable, even in December). Our bartender, Jeff, was a doll and knew his drinks.
Review Source:Wow, underwhelmed is the first word that comes to mind. Â Only stayed here for one drink....why? #1, the menu was full of unmentionable style food. Â #2, plastic martini glasses....WTF. Â This place use to be a church so the interiors were really different and cool in my opinion. Â Also, the location is so prime I was just stunned they didn't have a better menu and step up their game and actually give out GLASS martini glasses. Â Strange. Â My suggestion, poke your head in, look around and grab a beer.
Review Source:I waver between one and two stars here, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
First, this review concerns our lunch at Mad River--which makes it possible that the troubles we experienced are restricted to that shift.
The building is lovely, and so are the stained glass windows. The hostess was very sweet, but unacquainted with the beers served and slow in procuring our drinks. When drinks arrived for the table, the sodas were flat.
Of the five place settings, three knives were filthy and had food residue on them. The forks, though not shining clean, were immaculate in comparison.
The server gave the impression of being in a foul mood. She failed to notice that we set the knives aside in a pile at the edge of the table. She failed to apologize for the substantial delays in the beverage and food service (there was not a large crowd). The worst of it really was her manner. Though she did not explicitly say anything offensive, her sighings and eye flashings and head tossings and microexpressions clearly expressed her annoyance. Annoyance at whom, we weren't sure--but it was unpleasant and unrelenting enough to tarnish the experience.
We have little to say about the food. One companion ordered a wrap filled with pulled pork and mashed potatoes--she didn't like it, but said it might taste exactly as it should, it just wasn't to her taste. My salad with crab cake was fine--the vegetables were crisp and fresh, the crab cake was good. Another companion reported satisfaction with the quesadilla, but the nacho eaters disdained the cheese spread that was used in place of grated cheese.
The bathroom was what you'd expect in a Greyhound bus station. It was awful.
There you have it. I'm absolutely willing to believe it is better as an evening outing.
Had SO much fun dancing here! It was like being in college again, but with the added benefit of nostalgia for my carefree younger days. There is nothing subtle or chic about this places - there was a giant dance floor surrounded by wooden booths, the music was loud and cheesy (and mainly from 1998 - 2001); the drinks were cheap and served in plastic cups, all the customers were friendly and easy going so that the dancing groups were free flowing. All in all a really fun place to dance until I could not dance any more (or until they shut the place down and bodily carried me out).
Review Source:This place is very cool. It's an old church that has been transformed into a bar. BEAUTIFUL.
Drink specials are fantastic here--I got the bottomless mimosas... and went through a whole bottle of champagne on my own. :) The staff is super friendly, we had a blast--sat outside on a beautiful day with great friends.
The inside is incredibly spacious, lots of mirrors, HUGE BAR. I am sure this place is absolutely wild on weekend nights!!
My friend, Leeanne, and I were in Savannah, GA, and met a couple of ladies on the smoking porch of a fun bar there. Â We told them we were going to Charleston the next day, and they said we had to try Mad River.
We heeded their advice and gave it a try! Â Mad River is an old church that has been converted to a sports bar & grill. Â The atmosphere is great and the beer list is exceptional. Â The food was just fine as well.
We went on 3 separate occasions over two nights (I went once by myself for lunch and to watch the basketball game on TV), and each experience was pretty cool. Â
Non-touristy and kind of on the edge of the tourist district. Â If you go, sit at the bar and rustle up a conversation with the sexy bartenders. Â Totally fun and worth it!
I have to agree with Derek.
Visiting from Houston, I was in town for work. The Charleston Place hotel recommended this bar. I did like the idea of an old church being converted into a bar. It was a Tuesday night, and it was pub trivia night with a really bad DJ. I couldn't hear my co-workers. My long island iced tea was so bad I couldn't drink half of it - good thing I didn't pay for it!
I stumbled onto this place because my feet were SO tired from walking around in the HOT market. Â We happened to come in right at Happy Hour, so we had a couple of $4 martinis and $2 pints. Â
We liked it so much that we went back after dinner to find that they have live music on Friday nights, and it was a packed house.
