It is my tradition to celebrate Bastille Day every year with my Mom. This year we decided not to go into the city and dine at Madeleine's instead. We have been at this wonderful establishment many times and have never been disappointed. Growing up in the restaurant business, and working in the industry for many years, I find that I am very particular when I go out to eat. Madeleine's Petit Paris is truly a "Gem". The food, service, wines, and cleanliness of this restaurant are superb. The special lunch that Chef Caloz prepared for the holiday was so delicious and everything was very fresh. I really appreciated that we did not feel rushed and the owners even sang for everyone, along with a great accordion player. Madeleine, along with her husband Chef Caloz, and their son Francois make you feel like you are coming into their home for the first time. I can't recommend any particular meal, because I truly like everything! Checkout their website, they always have different events going on and something for everyone and at a reasonable price.

Good dinner meal, but not a great meal.  Here is a recent sampler of comments for our table.

Wild Mushroom Napoleon -- tasty, but not a "wow" dish.  Escargot Cafe de Paris - pleasant.  Rack of lamb -- unremarkable, not bad but not at the top end. Duck Confit a l'Orange - very nice to a bit tough depending on the section of the duck.  Other dishes were good, but no need to review each.

Dishes are ample, not overwhelming and one does need a magnifying glass to see the food as is the case in some haut cuisine establishments.

Butter served in aluminum wrappers - hmmn.  Service staff - tepid.

Yes, French cuisine - but based on our collective voice somewhat akin to vin ordinaire; perhaps time to revisit the menu and dishes and recipes - literally is a 50,000 mile tune-up in order?

Oh, 20% service fee (tip) automatically applied....without a word from the server, even though we were not a large party.  My!  My!

My family and I were here for their Easter buffet banquet and we have nothing but praise for this wonderful establishment!  The food was rediculously delicious and we all left beyond stuffed.   I must have tried a little bit of almost everything, and the standouts to me were the potatoes au gratin, wild mushroom soup, duck a l'orange and veal medallions.   The dessert table was full of fresh fruits and pastries, probably the best key lime pie and creme brulee I've ever had.  Food was constantly being replenished and we were never without drinks.  Madeline and her husband even sang french songs, complete with bunny ears and tails!  Truly one of the sweetest things I've seen in a long time.  I am not too familiar with french cuisine, but this was a great introduction and such a great way to spend time with family in such a nice setting.  Can't recommend this place enough and most definitely recommend their special occasion brunches - you will be seated at your own private table and because it's banquet style, it's not overcrowded.  Valet parking that is well run is a huge plus!  Highly recommend!

I can't say enough good about this wonderful restaurant!  This is my family's go-to for special occasions...we've held private parties here, and frequently come to the special events they have for holidays like Mother's Day or Easter.  Prix-fixe lunches are also excellent.

The special occasion brunches are absolutely TO DIE FOR.  A delightful, quality spread.  The au gratin potatoes and seafood bouillabaisse are delicious, there's a great selection of cheeses, and a dessert table that I could just hang out at while they refill the (best-I've-ever-had) creme brulee and chocolate mousse.

It's a family-owned business and Madeleine and her husband sometimes sing French songs, depending on the day or holiday.  It's basically a riot/amazing.

My one and only gripe is that the inside and the crowd can be a little stuffy/stodgy.  Mostly it reminds me of the inside of my grandparent's house.  But honestly, the great food and service outweigh that!

I love this place. Been a customer at Madeline's for almost 4 years and every visit is as good as the last. Dollar for dollar Madeline's Pre Fixe is the best bang for the buck that I've ever had. While the decor doesn't rival some of New Jersey or New York's finer establishments it's charming in an odd way. Make no mistake about it Madeline's doesn't try to lure you into their restaurant with any gimmicks; you'll enjoy the food and it'll be some of the best you've ever had.

When it gets busy I feel like they could use another hand or two. Despite this the waiters/waitresses on the premise know how to treat their customers well. Ever walk into a restaurant and get the feeling that the servers would rather be doing everything except serving you? Whenever I walk into Madeline's I feel like the staff actually enjoys being there, and that means you're going to get the service you want.

I've had a couple of entrees on their standard menu but I almost always order something from the pre fixe. Choosing from 5 appetizers, 4 entrees, and 5 deserts means you'll find something you want and in the rare instance that you don't then no problem! Check their website prior to your next visit and you'll notice that they cycle their entrees every 2 weeks!

I've tried most of the appetizers and you can't go wrong with any of the choices. The bite of sorbet that Madeline's provides after the appetizer is a very nice touch.

Entrees are all of the utmost quality. Whether you're in the mood for fish, poultry, or meat Madeline's really shines. On my last visit I opted for the Farfalle but in previous visits I've had everything from their fish to their lamb and it's always exactly what I want. A decent selection of fine wine and the included sides of ratatouille, au gratin, and green beans make the meal all that much better.

As for desert...the creme brulee, chocolate mouse, and souffle are my favorite 3 deserts anywhere, anytime, period (with the exception of my fiance's homemade deserts). I really can't conceive a better way to cap off such a great meal.

Portion sizes on all items is perfect so you'll never leave the restaurant feeling hungry but you won't walk out feeling like your stomach will explode either.

If you want to take your significant other on a hot date then consider other venues. Want to have some of the best food around? Give Madeline's Petite Paris a try and you're sure to impress!

Been here at least 10 times over last few years...a place I go with my family for special occasions like birthdays or as top 3 choices to consider for the hell of it...
Seems like a long kept secret that many in NJ don't know about.
Waiters, waitresses and married owners are always very respectful and friendly.
You can't beat their Prix Fixe Dinner menu in which you can choose one each from 5 appetizers, 4 entrees and 5 desserts for $32.50. Their French onion soup is a great start to your meal. Peppercorn steak on regular menu is one of top steaks I've ever had. ..you have to try it. Their soufflé for 2 smell and tastes amazing.  Customers are generally an older crowd but great classy place for young an old to take a date or just splurge on deliciousness with friends and family.
    No disappointments here!

Madeleine's is a wonderful family owned French restaurant where you truly feel like an honored guest. Madeleine herself or her son will greet you at the door, the same wait staff is always in the dining room and they get to know their guests. Chef Galoz comes and greets each table personally.
The food is perfect every time. I love the wild mushroom napolian, the escargot, and the salads to start. The pork tenderloin entree is fantastic as are all of the fish dishes.
In general, the atmosphere is quiet and comfortable and the crowd is a bit on the older and bland side. The decor is dry but clean. But you're there for the food, not the people watching. It is excellent for a romantic evening out with the boyfriend or a celebratory dinner with my grandparents.

I am a long time fan of this place , even tough not not wrote a review before about the establishment, until now that is. After three big banquets, few quiet dinners and several special buffet fairs for Thanksgiving, mother's day , etc. I could definitely say the have the best food I ever tasted in New Jersey. Outstanding service, attention to details and very welcoming staff. Nicest people you could meet from Madeleine herself, to Chef Galoz and their son Francois.

Some of the main dishes  I had over the years include: for chicken Nicoise, Fancais, Coq o vin; for meat Sautéed Veal Medallions with Wild Mushrooms, short ribs and Filet Mignon poivre; for fish  Red Snapper with Dijon Mustard Sauce and Sole Provencal. Of course I also had endless  portions  of Gratains, crepes , all the mouth watering salads and soups. I almost forgot their deserts , you name it I had it (creme brulee, Bûche de Noël, Chocolate Mousse, souffles, etc, etc.). Never got disappointed not even once. At end of special buffets Madeleine and Gaspard usually entertain the crowd with a  duet .

Few people may find the decor a little bit old ) it may look like your grandma's house , but for me that's part of it's charm. Besides with updated decor comes higher prices, so please keep it as is. Pricy place but for what you get is very reasonable. I go there for the food mainly so i ma satisfied.

Two weeks ago I have been at the Palisades NJ for a wedding of my friend's daughter, beautiful place, food looked fantastic until you start actually eating , probably cost substantially more than Madeleine's , I wish my friend asked my advise before parting with loads of mulla.I would have recommended this place instead.

    Go there anytime.

Nice French fare! Quite place with old world decor. Good to take a client for a silent, elegant meal.

So sad to update this review and change my previous 5-star rating to a 3. I ate dinner here last night with my husband and in-laws after not having eaten here for a few years. I must note that this is only the second time I've eaten at the actual restaurant (ie, apart from at least 4-5 family parties in the private room AND apart from the annual Easter buffet, which I've always enjoyed). They have a prix fixe dinner menu offering, but I chose to order a la carte as I love veal and liver, so I ordered the calves' liver entree and the lobster bisque soup of the day. My husband and his mom both ordered the prix fixe and chose the lobster bisque and the Quenelle Cardinal (creamed fish dumplings). My father in law ordered the arugula salad and special of the day, which was the veal chop. We went on a Saturday night (with a reservation) and waited about 25 minutes after ordering for the soup and salad to come out. Really? It takes that long to dish up a bowl of soup? The lobster bisque was disappointing. My husband and I finished ours, but after eating 2 rolls (note:when the woman offering the rolls comes to your table a second time, take the second roll because it's going to be a long wait) we we starving as it was about 8 pm at this point, so we would have finished anything. My mother in law ate about half of hers. The soup was bland and thin and came with about 3 tiny pieces of lobster in it. It needed more cream and more seasoning. About 20 minutes after the appetizers were finished, the waiter brought us a raspberry sorbet palate cleanser. Too bad there was no taste of food still on my palate. The food came out about 20 minutes after that, and while I enjoyed my dish, I was confused by the whole strips of bacon on top of the dish. The menu said "bacon," but I assumed it would be diced pieces, not slices tossed on top. The bacon was poorly cooked. Part of one of the strips was mushy while the end was singed. The liver itself was well-cooked and creamy, but the sauce that was on the plate had no flavor and added nothing to the dish. My husband ate 2 out of the 3 fish Quenelles on his plate because he was hungry, but he did not enjoy them at all. My mother in law took one bite and pushed the plate aside. I took a bite of one and I didn't enjoy it. They smelled overwhelmingly fishy and the texture was like that of a spongy meatball. Our service was terrible as the server was absent for a large portion of the meal, so he never came over to check on our entrees. My mother in law had to ask the bread woman to send Madeleine (the owner) over so she could talk to her. She offered her something else so we ended up taking an order of short ribs to go (they still charged us for the 4 entrees). Dessert was standard. The prix fixe comes with your choice of dessert, so my  husband ordered the creme brulee and my inlaws both got the apple tarte tatin. Our waiter did mention at the beginning of the meal that they have a chocolate souffle, but needed to know at the beginning if we wanted that. We all wished we had ordered that instead, but owell. So, for 2 hours and $200+, half of the people didn't enjoy the meal, and the service was slow and inattentive. It's sad because we've always enjoyed the food, but it seems service and quality have gone down hill. At $30+ per entree, I expect better food and service. I won't be returning.

How this restaurant dropped in  Northvale, I'll never know, but they should thank their lucky stars! Top notch all the way from service, presentation, food quality and ambiance. I'm still scratching my head wondering what a top notch restaurant is doing in a one horse town. Can't make sense of it, but very thankful that I don't have to go far for a Manhattan-quality French restaurant!

Excellent French cuisine, one of my favorite restaurants by far and I have tried many of their entrees. Very consistent quality, and it is a nice change from the played out Italian food or Sushi places.

    C'est Tres Bien!
I just have to say that Northvale is extremely lucky to have this restauarant in their neck of the woods!  My wife and I ate dinner here last month and the host and his wife are so wonderful.  They broke out into a love song that they performed for the dining room and then the Mrs. starting yodeling.

    Fantastic!

Madelines is always excellent. I recommend dinner rather then the buffet which is more a 3 star. The mussels are wonderful. The veal is also excellent. Madeline and her staff are warm and friendly. I have eaten here often.

Need a nice little place with romantic settings for a date? This is the place with excellent food and services. You don't even have to read the rest of the reviews.

For the foodies, you may be interested in knowing that this isn't BYOW....which is rare in New Jersey. Lucky for us, the wine here was pretty cheap. There is only around 100% markup from the store. That's way below average. If you are into the main stream, you can open a bottle of robert mondavi for 44 bucks. Personally, I was just going through the house Boudreau and Pinot Noir.
I'm not a big pinot noir fan, but I had to switch to that since I couldn't resist the chillean seabass for entree and I don't do whites.

We opted for the prix fixe menu. The popular entree was the chillean seabass. Personally, I started with the swiss onion soup. It was an interesting change from the typical "french onion soup". I am not sure that I like this variation as much, but the soup was nice. I was also able to sample the cream of muchroom and that was excellent.

The chillean seabass was lightly breaded and pan fried to perfection. By perfection, I meant that it was golden brown across the top. The thinner slice left me wanting a bit more, but I am not complaining.

The dessert was the chocolate souffle. When it came out, the room went wow (yes, all the strangers sitting at other tables). When I finally saw it placed on the table, it was the size of my head. This was the best part of the meal. the souffle was purrrfect.

Overall, the food was almost the American size, and the meal was pretty much in American prices. You can't beat that in this area. Unfortunately, the taste was also Americanized. It was excellent, nevertheless. It was a solid 4 star.

Great food, great service, lovely atmosphere.  Madeleine or her husband, the chef, almost always visits each table personally to make sure the meal is going well.  Wish the prices were a little lower, but other than that, this is the perfect restaurant.

This review is strictly for a special event, Oktoberfest, which was held in the banquet room on October 25th.

I had read about this event and was really looking forward to seeing how a high end type chef would handle German food.  I knew going in that it was a buffet and that I would be able to taste a great deal of different types of food.

Unfortunately, at no time did the reservationist inform me that the buffet was communal tables.  I had made a reservation for just the two of us and feel that the reservationist should have explained to me that we would not have our own private table for two.  I am unsure that I would have gone if I knew in advance and felt like it was very unprofessional to not have been forewarned.

Otherwise, the food was fantastic.  There were so many choices that I barely got to taste everything.  The standouts for me were the bratwurst with onion, pork wienerschnitzel, anything with the sauerkraut, the sliced ham , apple streudel and the creme brulee.  This was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of choices.

Everything tasted like it was made in-house.

I think a vegetarian could have even attended and walked away very satisfied.

I was a little annoyed that they charged us $1.50 for each seltzer.

Otherwise, the cost was $25 per person.

    Service was pretty good.

There was also entertainment.  There was an older gentleman (decked out in full lederhosen) that was the dj, who spun records, sang, played the saxophone and clarinet and guided us (with the assistance of distributed printed lyrics) through various German drinking songs.

I've been to a few French restaurants before, but have never been particularly impressed - overpriced, tiny portions in a pretentious, stifling setting, are generally par for the course. Madeleine's Petit Paris, though, was a serendipitous departure from a trend that would have had me eventually give up on French food like La Troisième République did to Deutsches Reich.

While there were several tempting choices on the regular menu (I just may have to splurge on the rack of lamb next time), this time I decided to be temperant and go with the prix fixe menu, an amazing value at $28.50. Because it included appetizer and dessert, that left me feeling generous enough to order a bottle for my table (which included my good friend Vanessa S., the previous reviewer) - a lovely German riesling, S.A. Prum Essence, for $27, was a perfect balance of fruity sweetness and refreshing minerality.

The miniature baguettes that were proffered at the beginning of the night were so fresh and full of loving warmth that my friend was able to feel it through her sweater. Crisp on the outside, delicate on the inside, with an actually appreciable taste that caused me to be more sparing with my butter than usual. The Swiss onion soup was rich and substantial, not the watery disappointment that most bakery bistro chains serve up. And between the appetizer and entree, they brought us apple sorbet to cleanse our palates - a ritual I had only previously heard about from my middle school French teacher, and never experienced myself. I am now firmly conviced that all cuisines should adopt the practice.

My main course was the baked salmon stuffed with crab meat, over dijonnais sauce... c'est magnifique! The salmon was tender and moist, the crab meat savory and fluffy, and the sauce... even my world-class vocabulary proves insufficient to describe adequately. How can something be so full of flavor, and yet never come close to overpowering the rest of the dish, or for that matter, the diner's senses?

Dessert was chocolate souffle for two, which quickly became for five, due to both the ample portion of the treat, and the inevitably envious curiosity of the rest of the table. A polyphony of every color of the desert rainbow - chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, and chocolate. Verbose hyperbole aside, it was excellent; I now understand why novice attempts at souffles (and the accompanying tragicomic disasters) have been a mainstay of pop culture for decades. At the same time, I thought that Vanessa's apple fritters were good too, and the next time I order souffle there, I'm planning to try the Grand Marnier version.

All in all, a great meal at a very reasonable price. How this restaurant opened in Northvale, NJ, of all places, is sure to be declared one of life's great mysteries, but it's one that I hope to ponder one delectable bite at a time, during all my (hopefully frequent) future visits to Madeleine's Petit Paris.

A little treasure buried in New Jersey, that was truely an amazing experiance with French cuisine. It has a very cosy atmosphere, amazing food and great service.

I have the prefix menu, which was only $28.50, which gave you decent portions of everything, than by just ordering one dish.

As for the starter I had the Swiss Onion Soup which was very tastey and didnt feel like your were drowning in cheese like most places fail to make it right.

For the main course, I had the Farfalle w/ Duck Confit, Sundried Tomatoes & Scallions, it was very good, but the sauce it was in you could really taste the wine a bit to stong, the duck was well cooked, and the sundred tomamtoes really help the dish all together. I could of eaten another plate!

And last for desert I had order the Apple Fritter with Creme Anglaise which was probably a bad idea, because this was nothing special at all, I really felt disappointed.

But my party who I went with got the Chocolate Souffle for Two, now that was definatly getting rid of the stink of the apple fritter. It was so rich, fluffy and huge!

In the end I got to meet the chef, and thank him for this great dinner, I loved this place, its pricey, but you could do it probably once a month or for something special.

The food was pretty decent but not what I expected.  I came here for my friends Sweet 16 like 7 years ago.  Valet parking is even more ridiculous.  I was picking my car up and the valet guy almost drove my car into another car with the other valet guy driving.  I dont remember if i tipped him, but that guy never learned to look both ways.  Retard!

I visited Madeline's on Christmas Eve with my husband for my birthday dinner (yes, I'm a Christmas Elf). First of all, I should mention that the Old Tappan Women's Club visits each year for their holiday dinner, so the restaurant was already highly recommended before I came to Yelp to check it out.

The owners, Gaspard and Madeline are true gems. I called on 12/23 to get a reservation for 12/24 lunch. I asked if we could order from the dinner menu as it would be a special occassion meal for us. Madeline took our reservation and was very sweet. She said they would be happy to cook us anything from either menu. I also noted that while we were at the restaurant other diners were making requests for their dishes and each one was met with an "Of course.." or "Certainly, whatever you would like..". They truly care about their customers and genuinely want you to be happy.

On to the food. The December special appetizer and entree were foie gras centric. I ordered the foie gras appetizer, my husband did not order an appetizer. My foie gras was beautifully seared outside, warm and creamy inside. It was served with confit onions, sauteed apple slices, dried cranberries, raisin and dried apricots. The portion size was also generous. I savored every bite. My husband had to smile at me a few times as I was obviously taking my time with each mouthful.

For entrees, I had the Venison St. Hubert and my husband had the Steak au Poivre. My venison consisted of 2 mini-ribeyes, chestnut puree, stewed red cabbage, dried cranberries and a slice of sauteed apple on each venison steak. The venison was perfectly medium, juicy and tender. Again, mucho savoring. Our dinner discussion became silence as we each appreciated our entrees.

My husband's steak was NY Strip, at least an 8-10 oz cut. He gave me 2 bites to try, and I can say the steak was both well seasoned and the congac sauce was well balanced. I did not sample his pommes frites, but they also looked properly prepared. We were each served a vegtable selection as a side dish. The greenbeans were good, carrots as well, but the stand-out was the au gratin potatoes. The Best I Have Ever Had!

For dessert, we shared a chocolate souffle. This was served table side with creme anglaise and was perfect. This was ordered from the dinner menu, and I noticed nearby diners eyeballing the presentation with a little jealousy. Ah well, we asked for it!

While we were eating and enjoying the general cozy ambiance, Madeline came out dressed as Santa Claus to greet each table. Her husband, the Head Chef, then also came out. They sang Christmas carols in French, English and Spanish with the waitstaff. Everyone was happy and it was such a touching experience to be part of.

At each course, either Madeline or Gaspard would come around to each table to see how you were enjoying things. We had no complaints, however my M-I-L mentioned that when her girlfriends have eaten here and had comments, Gaspard willingly discussed preparation methods and promised to make things to the individual diner's preferences at their next visit. That's impossible to find anywhere anymore, let alone at a French restaurant!

Our waitress was wonderful, very sweet and not overbearing at all. The owners son's and families were there as well, enjoying Christmas Eve lunch. As an added touch, everyone on the staff came to our table to sing "Happy Birthday" to me (grandson's included!) and I felt very special. They also sang to another table a few minutes after me. The entire dining room joined in the singing in each case.

All in all, this a gem of restaurant with a family oriented staff. I loved it and I know we will be back when in town again.

Madeleine's brings me back to Paris.  The food, the service and the atmosphere.  They consistently bring fresh ingredients to the table with their weekly specials. Gaspard Caloz is the chef who continues to bring French cooking to a new level that I have enjoyed for many years.  They started out in a tiny one table pizzeria expanding to these facilities.  Try their wine tastings!   Trs bon, merci !
