Magdalena's is the real thing. Â No loud music, nothing pretentious, just amazing food, great service and good prices. Â Everything but the beverages is home made. Â The flan is to die for. Â The salsa and guacamole are great and the chips home made. Â Would I drive from Albany to Valatie just to eat here? Â Oh, yeah!
Review Source:I've been to Magdalena's twice now and both times have been really happy. Â It's nothing more than a bare bones store front with a half a dozen tables covered in brightly patterned fabric and some folding chairs but the food is homemade traditional Mexican food.
The salsa and pico de gallo that comes with a basket of fresh chips are fresh and tasty. We've tried the empenadas, the tacos and the chimichangas. Â All were outstanding.
The prices were reasonable, the service, quick and efficient but a little unpolished. That's not to say that we weren't well taken care of, just a little rough around the edges.
This will definitely become my Saturday lunch stop.
I was introduced to Magdalena's by a friend today for lunch -- Â this is my new favorite place in town. The food was very good, fresh, and plentiful. Service was excellent (couldn't have been more than 7 minutes to get my dish). The biggest surprise was that the place wasn't jammed -- it should be! I had the enchaladas with black mole sauce and my buddy had taquitos. We would recommend either. Give me another couple weeks and I will be able to speak for every item on the menu.
Review Source:Magdalena's Menu (formerly Picante Uno) is a Mexican grocery store and eatery located along Main Street in the village of Valatie. Magdalena's Menu is also set up at the Troy Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings.
The place offers a small selection of grocery items and cold drinks in the cooler and a full service Mexican restaurant inside the store including several tables with metal folding chairs for dining in and takeout is available. Some of the menu items offered include nachos, empanadas, tamales, enchiladas, burritos, tostadas, chimichangas, flautas, tacos, and tortas, plus desserts chimichangas (filled with cheesecake & banana) and churros (covered with cinnamon sugar, stuffed with apple). The prices for individual items $3.50-$8.00 plus tax and dinner plates (with rice & beans) $8.00-$10.00 plus tax.
I stopped in here for takeout very recently. I ordered the Chimichangas with Grilled Chicken ($8.00 plus tax) served with rice and beans, lettuce & diced tomato garnish. They ran out of chicken with chipotle, my initial choice. The food was ready to go in under 10 minutes.
The portion of food was just right and hot. The chimichanga was lightly fried in a thin soft tortilla wrap stuffed with tender marinated grilled chicken strips and topped with guacamole and sour cream drizzle. The Mexican rice had a firm texture and the refried beans were cooked firm & round and not mashed down. The food overall was fresh tasting with nice flavors and not too heavy, nor greasy.
