The service is easily the worst I have ever encountered and the food is mediocre and way overpriced. Only visit if you hate good food and love wasting money. Just do yourself a favor and either go somewhere else or stay home and eat cardboard, as that would be a very similar dining experience.
Review Source:The main reason I'm giving this 1 star is the prices are ludicrous for Mexican food in this town. My father, boyfriend, I went to eat and it cost over $60 and we didn't go buck wild.
Firstly, their salsa tastes really sweet to me. I could be wrong but it tastes like there is a hefty amount of sugar in it.
Secondly, I ordered guacamole tacos. For 3 tacos, rice, and beans it was around $12, for tacos!! The tacos were probably one of the worst things I've ever ordered in a restaurant. It was white tortillas filled with a lump of guacamole, shredded lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. I was expecting something somewhat more substantial at that price. I couldn't even finish one taco. The rice was dry, and the beans were dry. There were two shreds of cheese on the beans.
Not recommended, not at all.
The salsa was really good. Â I wouldn't stick around for any of the rest of it. Â The chicken had no flavor and resembled sawdust. Â The black beans also had no flavor and tasted like they had just been poured out of the can. Â You have to add some onions or pork or salt, something to flavor it up. Â The staff, while nice, didn't seem too interested in how we liked the food, they never asked. Â We sat at the bar. Â The bartender was dressed like she just got out of aerobics class, very weird and totally low class. Â How is this place still in business?
Review Source:I waited a long time to finally try this place because of the reviews on this website, and because, let's face it: there are other options. That was a mistake, though, because I had a really enjoyable experience. I came in, with a friend, at 6:57 and they honored happy hour prices for our frozen strawberry margaritas. The margarita glasses contained a heaping amount of frozen deliciousness which was a lovely surprise, especially considering we were toeing the happy hour line. The salsa was good, not the best, but still really good. It's not very spicy, but it is flavorful and on the medium side of chunky (in between pureed and diced), yet still saucy. We also ordered the queso blanco which was yummy, and more importantly, it didn't do that thing where it congeals after only sitting out for 5 minutes. I do wish there had been some poblano or something to make it look more interesting, but the flavors are definitely there, and I would order it again, even though $7 is pushing it for standard queso. My date and I shared a chimichangas plate because we overdid it on the chips (!) and knew we couldn't fit a whole lot more. They come two to an order with rice and beans and the standard lettuce/pico/sour cream, and they're basically fried burritos, so no skimping on portions here. They came out crispy yet chewy and filled with beans, steak, and cheese. When topped with sour cream and some salsa to cut the richness of the beans, each bite was scrumptious. I would have like some grilled veggies in the chimichanga instead of a ton of beans, but it was still delicious, and I'd totally order it again.
Our waitress was very attentive and somewhat friendly, and there were absolutely no service issues to speak of. Since this place is much closer than my current fave Mexican spots I'm sure I'll be back here very soon.
Went here again last night. Had a steak taco salad and a bubblegum martini- loved the bubblegum martini, very strong, very bubble gummy. HUGE portion of steak on the salad and I really like the cilantro lime dressing.
However, my boyfriend got the grilled chicken enchiladas and I wish he had said something and sent them back to the kitchen but he waited until the meal was over to say that they were super salty, of course, I love this place so I didn't believe him, but I tried a bite and he was right...It was almost like biting into a ball of salt. So, I can endorse the chicken quesadilla and I can endorse the steak taco salad, but I would advise against the chicken enchiladas.
Although my boo mentioned something about perhaps the enchiladas would have been better if he had gotten pulled chicken. I don't know, I still like this place and I'll probably go back.
Eh.
I wandered in here while I was on a neighborhood stroll. Was drawn in by the thought of a margarita. Wait staff was friendly but not particularly professional. I had a delicious Mango Margarita..it was huge and had a nice little kick to it. For a place called Margarita's...I can at least give them that. But I think that's what they should stick to. :/
I took advantage of  "Taco Tues" which was advertised for $1...but was told they were $2. 0_o The salsa was not good at all...didn't even eat it and it was free! lol  The tacos were definitely worth 2 bucks.
Anyhoo, the margarita was pretty tasty. Aaaaannnnd  #thasaboutit!
Not sure I would recommend this spot to anyone...just eh.
My go-to place for a more authentic than Chipotle Mexican food (don't get me wrong, Chipotle is awesome). I enjoyed getting their free chips and salsa at the beginning which they refill without complaint. Atmosphere is laid back, but staff is definitely not lazy. Flautas pollo was deliciously crispy on the outside but juicy chicken on the inside. Sizes of their appetizers and entrees was more than enough food. Appetizers are always great for sharing. Arroz con pollo is flavorful and the sides complement the food so well.
Margaritas are delicious. Much better than their Pina coladas!! Happy hour prices for drinks and appetizers are very reasonable and yummy!
I always go with my boyfriend, who always gets a seafood dish (usually shrimp). THe only problem I have are their shrimp dishes. I'm not sure if its how its prepared, cooked, or what, but their shrimp is a strange taste to it. Other than that, everything has been delicious so far!
Have been to Margarita's a few times and they have always been great! Their food, really, is the closest I have ever tasted to real, authentic Mexican food. Their prices are reasonable and their service great. Now, I won't give it a 5 star rating because their salsa could improve a little to have some spice to it, and there was one time that our food took longer than it needed to. We were having drinks, so we did not mind too much, but that is worth noting. They did make it up by giving us some great guacamole and a free drink.
Review Source:I came here with some friends for a spur-of-the-moment dinner. It was right after a medical Spanish class, which partly influenced our decision.
The colorful, fun decorations stood out the minute we walked in the restaurant. The walls are painted with some really lively designs.
This was one of the only times I've had Mexican in Richmond, and my companions and I agreed that it was comparable to some of the medium-grade Mexican places back in California.
Our server was super bright and friendly. She gave us plenty of time to look over the menus, even though we were taking forever trying to decide what to order. I ended up ordering the "arroz del rey," which was a rice dish with three kinds of grilled meats. My two friends ordered a combination plate (burrito, enchilada, and taco) and chimichangas.
The meal comes with complimentary chips and salsa, which I felt were decent. I like my chips thick and crunchy, but these chips were of the thin and crispy variety. The salsa was simple, though not particularly spicy, and it had a lot of fresh tomato chunks.
The food overall was tasty. I asked for some hot sauce, and our waitress brought two house hot sauces. The yellow sauce, as I was warned, packs quite some heat! The red hot sauce was more standard. My dish was a little salty, but that might just be my personal perception since I tend to cut back on sodium when I cook for myself. While the prices are medium range ($9-16 or so), the portions are HUGE, so it's a good value. I managed to finish my plate, but I was quite full; both of my friends had enough leftovers for lunch the next day.
This place definitely has a fun atmosphere, and is very relaxed. It wasn't as crazy as the word "cantina" might evoke in your imagination, but then again, we went on a Wednesday night.
Like most gringo-ed Mexican restaurants, this place has its good and bad points. Â Bad: salsa. Â Watered down and tastes like it came out of a jar. Good: plantains. Â I thought they were exceptionally delicious and were great for sharing, despite being a side dish.
The portion sizes are nuts. Â BF and I split the steak burrito entree, which comes with lettuce, rice, refried beans, and TWO burritos. Â Yes, two! Â I would like to meet the person who can finish that entire dish by him/herself, just to stare in horror at the personification of gluttony. Â We could not even finish one burrito, each. Â As for the burrito itself, I found it actually pretty tasty, and it was even delicious when reheated the next day.
All in all, I think it was a pretty satisfying meal. Â The waitstaff was very friendly, and they even took the time to split up the entree into two plates for us because they knew we were sharing. Â I would come here again, because to be honest, sometimes I just want unauthentic Mexican food, just like how sometimes I want unauthentic Chinese food, even though I should know better.
For the maybe 3 Mexico futbol fans in Richmond, this would probably be the place to come watch the games. Â Don't be the minority at Penny Lane ;)
