The ONLY reason they don't rate a "ZERO STARS" is because the fries are REALLY good.

I ordered an unsweet tea without lemon. Sure enough, I got a lemon. Sent it back. Did they pour another... Nooooo. I could see where the lemon used to be on the lip of the cup... Not even a glass; I got a paper cup. They "ran out." Guess the dish washer was on strike.
Ordered a double cheese burger. Was asked what I wanted on it. Ordered lettuce, mustard, mayo, pickles, medium well. GOT a well done burger with lettuce and NO silverware or napkins. Had to watch the burger get cold while I waited for the waitress to return and asked for the rest. She acted like it was an inconvenience. Got two forks and no knife! Ever try to spread table top catsup (been sitting out all day) with a fork? Not easy.
Although the food was just ok, as mentioned above, the fries were really good. Not sure how they cook them, it's almost like they are double fried or something.
Not wanting to repeat myself, but NOT wanting you to think you're going to get a good meal from this place, I will repeat myself....

What an experience. Â We were on the island in the middle of March for a short vacation, trying to get some warm weather... that we did not as it snowed one night on our trip. Â But it happens, it was still a great trip. Â We were driving around one night looking for someplace to eat dinner, and this was the only place that appeared open on the entire island. Â And we figured its really hard to terribly mess up Italian food (vs. fish which if ill-prepared could ruin the rest of the trip...).
We got in around 6:30 or so, it was pretty quiet except for a few locals (based on their familiarity with the wait staff). Â The wait staff was incredible. Â We had Becky, who was warm, attentive, and all around great; a highlight of our entire vacation. Â The food itself was mediocre... the baked ziti I had was really overcooked, but it was still edible and the sauce was pretty decent. Â Not the greatest meal in the world, but it worked in a pinch, and Becky was really a star.
It seems this restaurant which has been around almost 20 years according to the owner needs a real shake up in all aspects. Â Service was very poor and staff was poorly trained. Â Lots of effort but disorganized missing the basics of customer service. Â Nice but not cutting it for attentiveness. Â My dish, stuffed shells, lacked any Italian like qualities and the side salad was dull white lettuce. Â I get the impression they serve the senior local crowd who gather as they have for years for a comfortable meal out of the home. Â Marias needs to shake out the apron and get fresh start from the lighting to the bread. Â They have the potential. Â There are too many other better choices on the Island for the service and cost.
Review Source:We got a voucher for the buffet breakfast from our stay at the Blue Heron Inn. The buffet was your average breakfast fair. Most of the food seemed to have been under the heat light for too long. The homefries were very good. There was not much fresh fruit, and no pastries of any sort - would have liked a better selection. Our waitress made it very clear that the tip was not included in the voucher. Doubt I would go back.
Review Source:Here's an update. Â The pizza wasn't as good this time. Â The crust seemed different as did the sauce. Â Maria claimed everything was the same. Â It was still a good value though and some of the cheapest food you'll get in season when delivered. Â Next time we'll order the sausage and (green) bell pepper & mushrooms for a more accurate comparison. Â The okay breakfast buffet still costs a bit much for a family of four - about $40 when all is done. Â We haven't tried this place yet for dinner.
This makes my overall 3.5 stars.
If you can get past the nursing home chic decor, noisy kids, cafeteria -like ambiance and don't run away from the afterthought crappy salad that comes with a meal if you don't want to ante up another $6 to go to the salad bar, then get the  lasagna.
Homemade noodles, and nicely spiced meat the owner is Greek and the spices prove it.
Went here while down on chincoteague for the annual seafood festival. Â First trip was for dinner and wasn't really my choice since I was a guest so I went where our host took us. Â Second and third time was for breakfast. Â Now for the review.
Food was good but not great. Â My first meal was eggplant primevera which was really good but it came with a HUGE side of spaghetti that wasn't mentioned by the waitress or on the menu. Â Breakfast was a buffet of sorts with usual fare of eggs, bacon, and other such things. Â Second breakfast trip I got a mushroom and cheese omlette and was quite disappointed. Â The egg had little to no taste and the cheese looked like melted Kraft singles rolled into it. Â Same color and texture.
Decor was your basic everyday palette of browns and creams. Â Lighting was dim but not fancy dim. Â Sufficient seating even for large groups.
Service was another disappointment. Â For the first two trips there we had the same waitress and she was just a bit to friendly to the point of being annoying. Â She told bad jokes and was just way to talkative. Â Had a hard time ordering because she had something to say about every item. Â She also had a bad habit of reaching over peoples food to either refill drinks or take empty plates. Â I commented on this to the hostess and just got a nod and grunt from her. Â Now for the last trip we went fir breakfast before hitting the road and the hostess was beyond rude to customers and other employees. Â She literally stomped around the dining area and was apparently having a bad morning because her jaw was so tight I was scared she was gonna snap. Â She sat us at a table that hadn't been cleared by the bus boy yet and instead of sitting us somewhere else she proceeded to tell us to sit and.grabbed the rag from the bus boy and cleaned the table while we were sitting at it. Â My party all got water and all four glasses had something floating in them and we never got any replacements for them. Â Right before leaving I was headed to the restroom and she cut me off and didn't bother to say excuse me as she literally busted through the doors. Â Finally I was paying and she didn't listen to no one because we had two separate tickets but she rung it all at once then rolled her eyes when we had to put together our money to pay all at once.
All in all the food was decent, but the service really brought down what could have been a good dining experience.
Last night we had dinner at Maria's  - thought a bit of pasta after many days of wonderful fish would be a nice change.  That was our first mistake.  The second was not following our instincts to just leave after we were seated.  It is hard to imagine food any worse than our dinner.  The "baked ziti" was not made in this century, and "Maria's special" that included two meatballs did nothing to help this dish - they were gray, amorphous lumps and the slices of American cheese on top were just awful.  My husband's flounder, while a decent piece of fish, was served lukewarm without seasoning nor even a lemon slice.  And let's not even think about the green beans.  Maria, shame on you for serving such terrible food.  Our son described the overall atmosphere as "dismal" and we fully concur.  Thank heavens for Mr. Whippy's which helped erase our dinner nightmare!
Review Source:This review is only concerning takeout. Â The food was ordered over the phone and delivery was prompt. Â The food was excellent. Â We had Fresh Shrimp, Oysters, Scallops, and Calamari. Â It was flavored very well and delectable. Â We ordered the food from our hotel and after it arrived we sat and watched the water from our room and enjoyed the special meal.
Review Source:This was our last day on the island as our vacation was coming to an end. Â We missed the breakfast at our hotel as we slept in and was packing the car. Â We decided to go to Maria's for breakfast. Â The last time we were on the island we came here and all was good.
We pulled up and the place was packed. Â We waited less than 5 minutes before we got our table. Â As we waited for our table, we looked over the special menus. Â All the specials were under $5 except the buffet which was $8.49. Â
We got seated and our server some came by.  We placed our drink orders and then looked over the menu to see if anything else stuck out.  We soon placed our orders.  My wife and kids got the 2-2-2 special which was 2 eggs, 2 sausages, and 2 pancakes.   I got the  eggs, sausage, home fries, and toast special.  My two young kids split a 2-2-2 combo.  The best thing about these meals were, they were all under $5 each.  You can't really go wrong with that. Â
The food came out pretty fast. Â Considering how packed it was, Â I thought we were going to have to wait a long time. Â Lucky we got in when we did, about 5 minutes after we sat down a party of 22 came in.
Now, back to the food. Â All tasted as it should. Â It's really hard to mess up eggs, potatoes, pancakes, and sausages. Â I like the fact that this place uses big sausages. Â These are not the little tiny things you get a most places. Â
Our server was nice, she was by to check up on us. Â My water and coffee were always filled, so all was good. Â The food tasted fine. Â Nothing amazing, but it hits the spot.
I'll be back here next time I'm on the island.
If I wanted to write a sitcom about a dysfunctional, chaotic diner, I would use Maria's as a case study. Despite doing mostly buffet business this AM and despite having plenty of staff running around, this was a pretty awful dining experience. Nevertheless, the breakfast buffet was just fine and a quick option on the way to the beach. Just be prepared to trip a waitress to get your coffee refilled.
Review Source:I asked around for a good place to take the family for breakfast and was told Maria's was the best bet. Â We went 2 mornings in a row. Â Both times my husband had the breakfast buffet, Â and I had bacon egg & cheese sandwiches. Â My sandwiches were fine, my husband said most of the buffet was good (a few items were just OK)
The service was friendly and efficient. On the second trip, the waitress from the previous day remembered us and stopped to say hi to the kids.
In a small town with relatively few dining options, Maria's is a good casual place to get a decent meal at adecent price.
I have heard that Maria's is good for pizza and breakfast. Even my mother goes there for a breakfast club. But, we decided to go for fish, because they said they had fresh flounder on the specials menu. Yikes, the lighting is so bright, it reminded me of a refurbished IHOP. Room set up? Think very boxy. Menu: lots of Italianate fare, my daughter chose the stuffed shells. She was extremely happy. My mother and I chose the fresh flounder. We were assured by the perky server that it was fresh. After eating about half of mine I let my mother try it. She nearly spit it out saying it was very mushy. I tried hers which tasted very fishy to me. I said I didn't want to complain since mom was footing the bill, and I ate in silence. When the server came back and asked us how everything was, I told her the flounder was mushy. She said George told all of them it was fresh. C'mon--we all know frozen, thawed and frozen again fish when we taste it. I suggested she let George taste it. When she came back, the first thing she said was: George is not going to give you any refund. You ate too much of it. (Talk about customer service). I asked if he tried it and she said "Yes." I don't think so. I wasn't offended so much at the mushy fish, as at the poor service, which stems all the way from the owner who is so afraid of getting taken by the tourists who frequent this place. As I told the server, I'll never go back there again, and I DO NOT recommend it.
Review Source:Breakfast - Monday 7/19/10.
We were nervous to try this place based on the reviews here but we are glad we did!
The decor was nice and not what I had expected. Â Muted color palate/browns and cremes. Â I think the place was painted recently. Â There was a nice fireplace too.
I checked out the breakfast buffet but chose to order off the menu for no real reason other than I didn't want to gorge myself.
Our server was very efficient. Â Food came quick and it was HOT! Â As soon as I saw the hash browns I knew this was going to be a great breakfast!! Â And then I saw the fluffy scrambled eggs and they tasted awesome!! Â I asked for bacon softly done and it came out PERFECT! Â The toast was great too! Â
Everything was done exactly how I like it and for that reason I give Maria's breakfast 5 stars! Â *****
Dim those lights, please! Â The restaurant is too bright. Â
That's about the only complaint I have about Maria's. Â The pizza is the best on the island. Â And their fried chicken....we ordered some for delivery after drinking Virginia wine all day. Â Fried chicken and white wine - a food pairing that shouldn't work, but does. Â The chicken came in Red Robin boxes. Â Not sure how that happened, but it was delicious. Â Maria's is a family owned spot, very friendly, and I've never had a bad meal there.
After eating at this place, I've instituted a new rule -- when the drinks are awful, just get up RIGHT NOW and leave.
Who knew that iced tea could taste like ... well, like that?!? Â And while we were waiting for our drinks, I watched the waitress refilling the syrup for a giant jug from Sam's Club or something. Â
We made the mistake of stopping for breakfast at Maria's.  The decor (typing decor in association with this place sort of makes me giggle) is nonexistent.  They had some sort of breakfast bar, which I ordered and my friend ordered off of the menu.  The breakfast bar consisted of the usual fare -- but it tasted like it had been defrosted and put out  under the heat lamps hours before. Everything I tried, from the sausage, to the grits, to the eggs, was inedible. I sort of suspect the majority of it came from Sam's Club.  Anyway, I ended up ordering toast off of the menu and eating the tater tots from the bar. (Yep, tater tots.)
I think breakfast from a gas station would have been better. Â (Seriously.)
We go to Marias for pizza and jalapeno poppers (and beer) Â This is a family affair and yes the decor is not on the fancy side.
The pizzas are huge, cheap and delish. Â They also have other Italian/Greek items that are tasty.
Come for tasty basic pizza but you will be hard pressed on this island to find upscale-no one expects that here in tis wildlife refuge area.
Yes, one star. It was muy mal!
Here's the story:
My friend and I were on a business trip. We were starving, it was late, and Chincoteague does not have a wide dining selection in the colder months. We saw an open sign, some cars in the parking lot, and took a chance.
We were seated quickly, as there were only 2 other tables besides us. We ordered pretty quickly too. Lasagna for me, baked ziti for him. The food came out lightning fast, an judging from the massive oven mitts the waitress was wearing while holding our dishes, the food was piping hot. All good signs so far.
She set them down, says enjoy, and that's when the guessing game begins. It was hard to tell what was under all that goopey melted cheese. Don't get me wrong, Melty cheese is yummy and all, but this was covering the entire dish, spilling over the side, and slathered on part of the plate underneath.
I look over at my friend's plate to see if we got our orders switched. He ordered the baked ziti remember? Nope, his looked the same as mine. So we both shrugged and dug in.
Bad move...the cheese had a distinct non-cheesy taste, reminiscent of moldy cardboard. The "pasta" under the layer of greasy cheese was swimming in some watery tomato sauce, and I had to try really hard before I found any thing resembling meat. Nothing had any taste...Well ok, maybe it did have taste, but after burning our tastebuds off with the scalding grease pockets in the cheese, we couldn't tell. Probably for the better anyways...
Bland food, old world decor (not in a good way), but quick service. If that's your cup of tea, go for it...we ended up at Mickey D's down the street where a vanilla cone was the perfect salve for my poor tongue.
