One words sums this place up and it is...ODD.
I have never been to a place like this in my life and I say this mostly because of the crowd. I have been here a few times and the crowd varies drastically.
The bar itself doesn't really differ from any other bar. I guess the 80's music they play sets it apart.
Now I have been to every sort of bar there is....hip-hop, club, upscale, frat boy type, sports bars, biker, small town, country, punk, metal, hipster...you get the point. I have never seen a place that has all of this in one. It makes for an interesting experience and vibe.
So when I say this place is ODD, it is mostly because I have never been to a place with such an eclectic crowd. I think that is a great thing BTW. Â Odder still are a select few of the people on the dance floor. Some need to go home and bang it out in the bedroom, not the dance floor and others just look like maybe they came from outer space and have never seen dancing before in their life! Not judging, just telling the facts. I love to dance and this was a bummer because I didn't feel comfortable dancing here. I bet it would have been entertaining for everyone else though! Two words. Motley crew. :)
In all fairness, this is not my type of place or crowd so that would explain the two star rating. I like places with a more predictable crowd. I like to know what I am in for if I am going to be out drinking and in my experience each type of bar has a different feel about it and I know when I am going out what I am in the mood for.
If you are someone who is trying to find an unusual place that you would "fit in", then this is your place. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE is accepted here.
I've come here several times with various friends, although it's been a little while. Â If you unashamedly love 80s music, karaoke, and dancing like no one's paying attention, this is your place. Â The bartenders are chill, approachable, easy to talk to, and advertise interesting drinks. Â It's a gay-friendly place, but straight people come here to hang out as well. Â The crowd is young (around 20s and 30s), trendy by default, but unpretentious. Â Probably the anti-West End. Â (And if there are vegan localvore paleoliths in attendance, they probably won't talk your ear off about it.) Â
The only downside for me is that it can get really crowded, and I have difficulty hearing people talking even when they're yelling right in my ear. Â Holding a conversation is close to impossible. Â The food isn't terribly remarkable, from the few things I've tried. Â It's not what one would consider classy. Â But that's not what people come for - they're here for the drinks, the company, the karaoke and music, and the unpretentious but high-energy atmosphere. Â
And yes, they do show incredibly random movies on the TV at the bar - things like Napoleon Dynamite and such. Â Being sloshed while watching them (yes, with subtitles) is a nice change of pace from dancing or yelling in people's ears.
This is going to be an odd review, because frankly, Ryan C. and I had quite an odd time here.
We had eaten dinner at On the Rox and the annoying football fans and loud tv sets had put us in a crabby mood, so I suggested we take a walk and see what else the Bottom can offer. Â Immediately, we passed by this place and noticed it was completely empty. Â Ryan pointed out that it was open, so we went inside. Â NOBODY was there. Â The bartender is dressed like a gothy nerd and doesn't even care that we come in. Â
Whatever, we sit down at the bar and both order a Blue Moon, which they have on tap. Â ABC Family is playing on the tv, and so for the next half hour while we finish our beers, we watch the end of Lady & the Tramp and the beginning of Aladdin. Â They even have the subtitles on with the audio, and honestly, I had so much fun sitting there, drinking beer and singing along to Disney movies. Â It was quite a different experience from On the Rox and despite the bartender's apathy, when we left I said "Thank you for a superior experience to On the Rox." Â Disney movies ftw!!
Now, some background. Â The place is quite dimly lit and they have a pool table. Â Quite honestly, I don't think this place actually deserves 4 stars, but my experience did. Â When we initially got our beers, I saw a small roach dash by on the bar. Â Gross. Â Then at some point, Ryan whispers that we are leaving after this beer because he thinks he saw another roach, or maybe it was the same one. Â
Anyway, come here if you're super hipster and like dirty, dimly-lit bars with indifferent bartenders. Â And $5 Blue Moon drafts. And baby roaches.
My fiancée and I went to Mars last night, Monday, to meet up with friends for drinks and karaoke. I'm in a manual wheelchair which didn't make it too hard to get in. My fiancée pushed me up a two inch lip while the door girl held the door open. Inside I found that almost all the tables/booths were taken, including our table. Someone was singing karaoke, and people were cheering him on. Its a great place to hang out on a Monday night. Also smoking is allowed, which eventhough i dont smoke anymore, i felt it was nice to see a bar still like that. Drinks were average price. The type of crowd was predominately a gay/lesbian crowd. But that made it more enjoyable in my opinion because it was a friendly crowd, not filled with people who are full of themselves trying to be macho.
As for a person who's In a wheelchair, it was fairly easy to roll around given it was a laid back crowd. I haven't checked out te bathroom, but it's a one in one out situation large enough for wheelchairs to go in. I wouldn't suggest bringing a powerwheelchair as if you have an EZlock, your attachment on your wheelchair will make it impossible. The only type of parking is street parking. There's a $5 pay lot right across the street where we parked. But getting across and on the worst cobblestone cutout known to man, I would suggest bringing an able bodied friend with you. The more people you go with te better. Last thing, the stage is raised about four inches, I got helped up by one of patrons there.
Besides all the cons, my fiancée and I had a blast meeting new people!
Went here on a Friday night and it was pretty dead. A few tables with people and music playing, and the obligatory random older guy dancing by himself.
Got a drink, bartender was quick and attentive once I knew what I wanted (but why wouldn't they be, there were maybe four other people at the bar). The drink was okay.
I guess I'd come back with a group of people, toss some drinks back, and get my own drunken "woo girl" party on. But depending on what atmosphere you're looking for, you can probably do better just by walking a few blocks to a different place.
I love a bar where I can come, sit down and have a good drink, maybe grab a bite to eat and the bartenders are friendly and not overbearing. I love the diverse crowd that this place attracts. Whether you're a working professional, a gay boy, a pretty college girl, a local who lives down the block, a fetish type, an everyday, average working man, it doesn't matter. The staff doesn't care what crowd you hang with or how much money you make or what you do in your spare time. The bar caters to all types and depending on the night you go, there are all kinds of things to do at Mars Bar. Dancing? of course. Darts? Check! Pool? Yep! TV's? They got 'em! They even have a Poker night if that's your thing.
Monday and Tuesday are Karaoke nights and the crowds are fun, probably the most fun you'll have in the city so early in the workweek. There are some really good vocalists and some terrible "singers" and that's the beauty of Karaoke. Everyone's supportive and it's not the least bit intimidating, so pick a song and go sing to your heart's content. Jess, the KJ, runs a great show and makes everyone feel welcome.
Every night the bar features Happy Hour as well as specials which are clearly advertised inside. They serve a full food menu with an extensive array of burgers, as well as other classic bar favorites. Drink prices are very reasonable and if you're on a budget, they feature some very affordable brews in addition to the full shelf of liquor from which to choose.
This isn't my favorite bar in town, but it's a fine place to go. It attracts kind of a hipster crowd. Not my normal scene, but I can have fun in it sometimes. I've gotta admit, I think the best way to go here is with a bunch of obnoxious girl friends. You can have a few cocktails, jump, dance and sing along to your favorite 80s tunes on Friday and Saturday nights.
I have never tried the food here, as I just come for drinks and dancing. It also isn't really the kind of place where I'd order any fancy beverages. Stick to beer and 1-mix beverages.
It's not the trendiest or newest place, but it's fun every once in a while.
This place was ok... went there on a Monday night and there were like 3 other people in the place. Â But it was 10:30pm, and by 11:30pm there was a healthy 25 people or so (yes, I counted). Â They run karaoke on Mondays and had a $2 beer special. Â Also, the bar serves absinthe for well under $10, which is much less than I'm used to in Vegas. Â It's too bad I wasn't in town for Thursday's 80's night, as I heard from multiple people that that is the night to go.
