I live nearby this McDonald's & have been a regular customer at the drive thru for over 5 years. Â The food is ok, typical McDonald's. Â But the service has become increasingly bad. Â The past year or so they rarely get my order correct. Â And they are SLOW!!!! Â Recently I was 3rd in line when I ordered & had to wait 15 minutes until I got to the window & even then my order for 1 burger wasn't ready. Â The workers have no customer service skills & have no business working in the service industry. Â They seem to be more interested in gossiping with each other than doing their job. On my last visit I ordered 1 burger. When I got to the window the girl though I ordered 9 burgers & insisted that I pay for 9 burgers. That was the final straw & the Laie McDonald's will no longer get my business!
Review Source:Out of all the McDonalds I have visited in North America and the rest of Oahu, this is the absolute worst McDonalds ever. I have been here since September of 2007 so this is not a one time experience. First, the wait time for this location is ridiculously LONG. No matter if it is a drive through or walk in it is takes forever compared to other locations, and really taking the "fast" out of Fast Food. Either the staff needs to be trained better or something is really wrong with their operational management. Second, the service is real bad. The staff doesn't seem to want to help, often many customers are just standing there and the staff is pretending to be busy. Their attitude isn't the best either and quite frankly, the employees there are pretty "odd". The price is also really high. Third, it is THE most expensive location on the island. I don't understand why they jack up the prices so much compared to any other locations on the island (trust me I've been to many locations). Fourth, they always give less food. Every time I order large fries, they fill up only about half the box. I swear the owner is stingy. Overall my friends and I have had a really bad experience at this location compared to any other on the island and it is making the McDonald Corporation look bad.
Review Source:If you like McDonald's, you really should make it a point to come here at least once during your time on Oahu.
I've been around, and I've never before seen a "theme" McDonald's. Â (Standardization is kinda the McDonald's thing. Â Even in Germany, McDonald's LOOKED like every McDonald's you'd ever go to in the States: the sense of familiarity is sort of what's supposed to attract you when you're on the road, yeah?)
So ... going to a Hawaiian-themed McDonald's is pretty cool. Â
Another reviewer hit on this, and it's true: there are some very unforgiving metal bumpers that line the already-tight drive-thru. Â If you are even a little dubious about your spatial awareness, don't risk it: park your car.
The drive-thru folk have been friendly when I've stopped by, but the drive-thru process itself is S-L-O-O-O-O-W. Â One of the slowest drive-thrus ever. Â
Pros:
1. Â Unique Hawaiian Theme
2. Â Friendly Staff (who tend to be international students from BYUH -- unexpectedly cosmopolitan for Laie!)
3. Â Only fast food for MILES...
4. Â Only joint open in Laie on Sundays (those fry-tossing HEATHENS!)
Cons (all related to the "drive-thru":
1. Â Super slow drive-thru
2. Â Drive-Thru O' Death (for your car's paint job)
3. Â Drive Thru *says* it's open 24-hrs ... but it's not. Â How about some new signage, brah?
All in all, I think it's definitely worth a try!
This must be the paradise version of fast food McDonald's. If anyone has been to this location, you've noticed the cool design of the restaurant, the outside and interior of the Lai'e location on the North Shore. You stop in for the design...the menu is your usual Mainland fast food McD's. But do grab the spam and rice and taro pie if you're not a local. :)
This location is cool. When you need a pit stop while traveling around Oahu, check out this location. Clean interior (minus the men's restroom), friendly staff and a pretty cool dining area with an interior waterfall. Plenty of parking and right next to the Polynesian Cultural Center. There is a drive thru also.
this is the "Polynesian" McDonalds on the island. Â the building architecture and decor inside are quite unique. Â Otherwise it's a standard Hawaiian McDonalds, which still makes it pretty cool with their breakfasts, Saimin, and special pies. Â Even if you don't see the special pie on the menu (currently banana), just ask for it.
Review Source:Been to plenty of McD's across the country, but this one probably has the best "theme" . It is original Hawaiian, from the outside and when you step through the doors, you see traditional Hawaiian museum pieces throughout the dining portion of the restaurant. Â They do have several donated pieces you can browse about in a huge seating area. Â Other than the standard McD's menu, you also have Hawaiian breakfast which consists of rice, scrambled eggs, and either portugese sausage and/or spam. I didn't have lunch here so, I can't comment on the lunch/dinner menu. Â Definately a place to stop and eat if you need something quick on the North Shore. Oh..they're right next to the Polynesian Cultural Center!
Review Source:The La`ie McDonalds building was the Laniloa Restaurant in the 60's and 70's. Â It was run by my grandparents and many of my cousins worked there as we were growing up. Â Before the Polynesian Cultural Center started serving food on site, guests to PCC would eat at the restaurant. Â When they did open their own restaurant my grandparents sold the Laniloa. Â I still have some of those very industrial strength dishes from that place with the tapa designs on them. Â Its a very nostalgic visit for me when I am in La`ie and need a french fry fix. Â I was always happy that McDs didnt just tear the place down, but dont know how much longer that will last. Â They recently did major renovations of the 2 McDs locations in Wai`anae and seem to be going for a very generic look without any local flavor in the decor.
Review Source:The employees are friendly, nice, & helpful.
I asked for FRESH hot fries with the order & actually saw the girl that took the order hand scoop delish fresh fries. YES!
The layout is a bit off; an old restaurant conversion. Brings unique charm. The Waterfall is a good conversation piece.
Serious McD's craving? Check; go here.
Probably my favorite McDonalds on the island. Â they have a seating area that is nicely decorated with a little waterfall thing.... and this is where I first tried haupia pie instead of the classic apple pie. Â They really need to bring those back.... Â I usually only go here for breakfast when I'm on the north shore. Â They give you good amounts of rice with your deluxe/Portuguese Sausage/Spam, Eggs, & rice breakfast platter and that's really all it takes to keep me happy.
Review Source:It's a McDonalds. Â The workers have their hometowns on their tags, so you know where your server is from (whoppie!).
Just a warning, the eating area is NOT air conditioned. Â It gets REALLY HOT in the eating/sitting area. Â There is a pathetic indoor waterfall (used to be cool, like 20 years ago), but it just adds to the humidity of the place.
If you're a tourist, go there, get some cheap food, take some pictures...but other wise there is no reason to stop here...
Get some "Kahuku" shrimp instead...
I needed an ice coffee for the long drive back to the hotel after visiting the PCC and fortunately this McDonalds was still open.
The cool thing is that this place looks like a giant hut!! Besides that, my ice coffee sucked, really watered down. The drive thru is really snug so be careful going through it. They have rails lining the path so if you're not paying attention, you'll just add on to the other paint smears.
This McDonald is unlike any other McDonald in other US states. Â It has a Hawaiian theme to it, and they got cultural items displaying throughout the store. Â Sadly (perhaps budget cut?), this is also the ONLY McDonald I have ever been to that have no A/C in the dining area and they use ceiling fans. Â There's only A/C in the ordering area, which is isolated by glass door that traps the A/C there for the staff.
Maybe the heat in the dining hall is part of the Hawaiian theme...?
The bottom line is the service sucked. Both drive through and walk in were utilized the same day. The girl in the drive through gave me the wrong change and after getting the manager to open the drawer rectified the situation and then stared at me like "why are you still sitting here staring at me?". It was because she never gave me my food. In her defense she was really nice.
Inside the service was worse. The ditz that took my order again forgot to give me my food. She was too busy flirting with the guy in line behind me. I now know how long she has lived here, that she misses her mom, that she likes the guys ear plugs and that she could not find anyone to do them here. That is way more than I needed to know about my McDonald's cashier. What I really wanted to know was where my food was. Actually it was sitting on the counter. When I asked her if that was my food she shrugged, said yes and then slid the tray toward me. By the time I sat down to eat the burger was cold and the fries barely warm. Ughh! I actually returned my food. I think this was the first time ever I returned something at MickeyD's.
The restaurant was clean and probably has the coolest architecture of any McDonald's. The girl cleaning was busting her butt and I gave her credit for that.
Overall...employees were lacking.
Cool McDonald's. I've tried to find some kind of history on this building and haven't come up with anything. I'm convinced it wasn't originally a McDonald's but, maybe?
Anyway, if your in the area you gotta check this place out. Go inside, grab one of the unique Hawaiian McD's menu items and eat it in the "kinda" open-air dining area with a waterfall.
McDonald's in paradise!
I can't say I've ever taken a picture of a McD's building before and probably never will again, but this place is different.
Located in the sleepy town of Laie, the only fast food place around for miles and miles.
The building is very cool. I'm not sure if they originally built it as a McD's or not? It sure looks like it used to be something different.
The inside it pretty cool as well and even sports a small waterfall.
PLUS, they have unique menu items not available here:
taro pies, haupia pies, banana pies, spam and rice.
Haupia pies = killer grinds!!
We definitely were NOT planning a trip to McD's while in paradise, but something about this place just made us stop!
It's McDonald's.
BUT it's HAWAII McDonald's!
BIG difference.
Like fried taro pies, fried haupia pies, and fried banana pies.
Saimin, sausage, spam and rice are also on the menu with the usual standbys. Â OH and the chicken select strips have the option of being served with sweet chili sauce.
My friend Klara drove here EVERYDAY because she's addicted to the haupia fried pies. Â She CRIED when the season changed and so did the flavor. That girl is hella cray-cray LOL
As far as McD's food goes, it's all the same, the difference being in the Hawaii marketplace they offer saimin and po-cho sausage and rice breakfasts!! Â Oh and who can pass up the fruit punch and taro pies!!! Â I kid you not on the latter!
At this location, near the Poly Cultural Center and BYU campus, Oahu, this one is themed rather nicely. Â Yes, I know, I know, it's a McD's for crying out loud, but it was kinda cool inside. Â On the outside it looks a bit like a Polynesian hut, I've got pictures I'll post later, and the inside comes the tall ceilings and outrigger canoe! Â Oh, and don't forget to toss a coin into the fountain to make a wish! Â Some of the other items on display were head pieces and such, they looked a bit steamy in their cases but again it's a McD's!!
Food-wise, other than the taro pie and saimin offerings nothing special to report. Â Saimin was the standard McD's saimin, crappy, salty, and lacking any life, but for $2.35 what do you expect?!!?
I'll have to head back for the Taro pie, or maybe not....
