This place is a good simple traditional bar. The food is nothing too special (although they are trying to make it fancier with items like a Pork Confit Quesadilla!) and the drink selection is decent. There are always lots of people having a good time and TVs and Shuffleboard!
For dinner we split a couple of Appys - the Pork Confit Quesadilla and the Zucchini Corn Fritters. The Quesadilla was great except for the presentation/plating sucked. They drizzled sour cream all over it  in a messy fashion which turned a good tasting appy and made it soggy and gross mess. i was really disappointed. The fritters my wife loved but I hated. They are more zucchini than corn, and not what I was expecting. Again they drowned it in sour cream and it got gross. I thought it would be a traditional corn fritter with some zucchini in it, but it was not this way. If you're a huge zucchini fan you might really like these.
The beer selection was decent and the merlot house wine was actually good - something you don't typically find in a bar. So I say stick to drinks and you will probably really like this place.
We're an older couple, and were looking for a place to have a simple dinner. When we opened the door to this place filled with noisy, exuberant people, we almost left. I'm really glad we didn't.
The people were genuinely friendly, the menu was amazing, and the "basic" burger I had was anything but. One of the best ever!
Even though they don't have traditional table service, we were visited at least three times during our dinner by helpful wait staff.
When we left, I took one of the printed menu sheets with to make sure that we don't forget McGee's. We may live in far away Chicago, but we'll be back.
Don't hesitate to join the great food and fun at McGee's. You'll come back too.
I went to McGee's a couple weeks ago with a friend to watch a Warrior playoff game and I must say, I was impressed. I went to high school in Alameda and never heard of the place but I'm glad I found it now.
When I first walked in I was surprised to see such great decor. The wood furnishings are great and I love the layout. The bar is a bit small but well stocked with some great beers on tap.
To order food you have to order at the kitchen where you receive a number and the food is brought to the table of your choosing. I had the blackened chicken sandwich which was great. Other menu items sound really good too, I can't wait to come back and try them. Just a quick look in the kitchen and you'll see some great cooking going on.
Service was pretty quick even for a busy game night. I can't wait to go back!
such rude customer service over the phone. I'm trying to see if they are airing the warriors game this evening; the woman on the other end just yells "I' can't hear you." and hangs up on me. I call again with another phone and the same service again. Jesus lady, let me finish the question before cutting me off or can you at least try to make an attempt of servicing me.
Review Source:My husband and I came by here on Sunday to try the new menu. It was really quiet compared to a Friday night, nice change of pace after all the Warriors games. We ordered the Cinco de Mayo special, Chili Verde...mm mm good, Ruben Sandwhich and Fritters, 6 pieces There was a couple games going on. Excellent Service, waitress was very nice, the food was great and out fast. I wanted to give this place a full 5 stars but one of the employees (big beared one) was yelling at his co-workers, it was loud enough that my husband at the bar could hear what was going on, we could hear him over the tv's!! Yikes! We saw him push aside one of the waitresses who was behind him at the time, poor girl. The menu change is great, the food is great.
Review Source:we have always loved McGees but haven't been in a while. tonight, we were wanting to take our kids there for the first time and enjoy the nice weather by sitting outside. We were excited for our regular McGees Club sandwich and a mushroom swiss burger. Instead, we got to a smoky back patio (which is fine, I know smokers need a place to go) but there was also a dog that kept snapping at people walking into the patio (including my children). So, we opted to eat inside. They recently changed there menu to more yuppy, trendy food and it was not good. the service was still fine though, as well as the multiple tv's showing sports. We used to love McGees for the chill, Alameda feel, but now, I'm sad to say we will probably not be going back. so bummed, but thanks for the long time memories.
Review Source:We tried the new menu on St. Patrick's Day and it was good. There were no complaints from our table of 4. Of course we did have a lot of Irish Car Bombs as well! It was actually a relief to get good food and good service on such a busy night. I know its been there for a while now, but if you have not tried the new menu, I recommend you give it a try.
Review Source:Upon moving to the East Bay last summer, I made McGee's my football season destination. Glen, the longtime bartender is a sweetheart and the locals are polite (even as I wore a Pats jersey). I hadn't been to this mellow watering hole in months and thought to stop in about a week or so ago. Glen is still pouring smiles but there's a big pleasant surprise: there's a new chef back there and a whole new menu and I almost don't want anyone to know about it. (There won't be any seats left on Sundays this fall). But McGee's has seriously stepped it up in the world of culinary yummies with a mix of pedestrian and ever-so-slightly highbrow. Enjoy a gourmet grilled cheese with Brie and smoked cheddar, a blackened salmon catch of the day with delightfully garlicky wilted spinach and buttery mashed potatoes. Whatever you choose, it'll satisfy. And Glen is there with a ready smile. And your friends will meet you. And all your sports will be on. McGee's just got way better but it's up to you who you want to tell.
Review Source:Been coming here for years. Â They have a new menu now. Â New tables and chairs, refinished wood floor for the bar area. Â You really wouldn't notice it because it's basically the same sports bar you've known for decades. Â Including the usual crowd of patrons, heavy on the people from the local adult sports leagues here after a game. Â Same big TV's and shuffleboard.
I didn't think there was anything wrong with the sports bar food they had before, but I was very impressed with the new menu. Â A very upscale and even sophisticated one for a sports bar. Â And reasonably priced when compared to an upscale restaurant that you would expect to have this quality of food. Â
For example, we had the spinach salad and it was great. Â Not too much dressing - just the right amount. Â Those big croutons you see are actually crisp pork belly chunks. Â Yes! Â The mussels were excellent - just like you get at a more expensive restaurant. Â
For you old sports bar patrons, McGee's still serves fried calamari and burgers. Â So something for everyone.
So here's the dilemma. Â You want to go out to have a nice meal. Â It looks to me like McGee's can serve you that nice meal - and at a good price. Â But do you really want to have that nice meal in a sports bar where there are groups of guys hollering at the TV screen and whooping it up at the bar?
Then again, if you want to go to a sports bar, wouldn't it be better to go and have better food than you would expect from a sports bar?
I for one, will be back simply because I want to sample the rest of the menu.
I have been going to McGee's since I was a kid, even worked there a million years ago. I would consider myself a regular. And yet, I never Yelp'd it before since I figured people knew what they were getting when they came here- decent bar food, giant menu, family friendly atmosphere, good bartenders who pour a fair drink, large selection of beers and enough tvs that everyone has a chance of seeing "their" game.
And most of that still stands. However, they have recently updated the kitchen, and now I really feel compelled to help get the word out about how good it is. In an effort to try as much as the new menu as possible, we have eaten here 7 times since they reopened after the remodel on March 8. The food is that good. Out of the many things we have tried, we have gone back multiple times for the mussels, the zucchini corn fritters, the mac and cheese and the pork confit quesadillas. Yes, you read all of those things right, the new kitchen has really stepped up their game, and they are offering a much more sophisticated menu than what was available before. The serving and quality of the mussels (for only $9.75) is unheard of, especially in Alameda. The corn/zuch fritters are so light and fresh, and the sun dried tomato aioli that they come with is amazing. My family fought over that quesadilla. We have also had, and really enjoyed, the sliders, the grilled cheese and tomato soup (the sandwich is a touch on the small side, but rich with brie and cheddar), the fries, the wings, both flavors, the calamari and the salad with salmon. I would give the burger another try, as it was a touch over cooked (med rare was more like med), and the bun was a little big. The irish nachos (potato wedges) are a bit heavy, but would be perfect for a group who wanted something to share. The fried chicken is still on the menu and is made with Lola's famous recipe, but I haven't had it ye, so can't report on whether it is the "same".
There was some chatter on their facebook page about how this new kitchen is not thinking of the "working class" customer. I could not disagree more. There are higher priced plated dinners (we have not tried any of these yet), but they are priced in line with other Alameda and Bay Area restaurants. There is a kids menu where nothing is higher than $6.50 (the sliders and fries) and the portion sizes are excellent. Most of the sandwiches/salads/appetizers are under $11 and the sandwiches and burgers come with fries, which is a fair price. The new menu and kitchen operators have tried really hard to make sure McGee's core customer will have many options, ensuring the family friendly vibe this place has always had.
If I sound too cheer-leady, its because I really want people to give this new kitchen a chance, and not go by what you "hear" about it without trying it in person. The owners have always supported the community through team sponsorships (both adult and kids leagues of multiple sports) and all manners of fundraisers. I am thrilled that we have a "new" place to eat that was already a favorite.
McGee's has a new food establishment and a new menu. I actually went into McGee's last week not knowing this wanting something off of the old menu that they no longer carry. (bummer) I ordered the 10.00 turkey melt with fries. The sammie itself was just bread, meat and cheese. It not only smelled like plastic.... it tasted horrible. The meat was very bland and extremely dry! I could not even swallow the meat due to its dryness. The french fries tasted like fish! And they no longer carry ranch. RUDE! They did give me my money back but I will not return. The bartenders seem rude half the times anyways......
Review Source:I love McGee's and have been going here for the past few years. The wait staff are fantastic and there are sports screens galore.
The kitchen just changed hands and I'm impressed. There are more healthy (and some not so healthy) options. I've tried the seared salmon salad over arugula and it was great. The vinaigrette (house made I'm guessing) was delicious. The new menu is a little pricier than before but it's completely different.
Dim lighting, loud old rock music, plenty of TVs, somewhat decent food, and a wide variety of drinks; McGee's has everything you'd expect in a small sports bar. So if you're just looking for a chill place on the weeknights to have a drink and watch the game with some friends, McGee's is a good place to go. Plus the service and atmosphere is really friendly.
Review Source:I AM HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED! The reason being, I've lived in Alameda three years to date and have frequented this bar and grill since. I've enjoyed my experiences there, up until today when I was treated less than human. I stopped by the bar on this rainy day to catch a glimpse of the NFL game. There were tables empty around the entire establishment. I chose a seat by the front tv and sat down with my superfood recovery drink I had to settle my illness (cold). The waitress came by promptly after I sat down and asked to take my order and I responded that I was okay for now, I had just taken my medicine and wasn't finished with my superfood recovery drink. 15-20 minutes passed and Tim (owner) sat across the table and leaned into me getting about a foot away from my face in the most rude unprofessional manner. He proceeded by telling me the following in front of other bar patrons:
1. "You cannot come in my bar and bring outside drinks." ( referring to my recovery formula for my illness"
2. "If  you're going to sit in my bar you need to have more than water" (I didn't see signage with a time limit as to when I needed to order by, the waitress approached me one time to ask my order when I first arrived, who is he to tell me my digestive system is prepared to start drinking or eating)
After his words he sat there and stared at me as if I hadn't understood the points he was making that implied he wanted me to not be there. I rose out of my chair and asked "what is your name sir", he replied "Tim". I said "since you're kicking me out Tim I will leave", he said " okay" I handed him my business card on the way out and invited him to the private gym I own for a workout, and laughed on my way out as I saw many people sitting all over the bar watching the game without any food or drinks in front of them. I wonder if he got in all of their faces and forced them to eat and drink or leave. Kill them with kindness right.
Came by with Kevin J. and a few other friends to kick back and catch up and McGee's fit the bill perfectly. Â Arriving just before last call for the kitchen, we picked up a selection of fries, guac & chips and mozzarella sticks for light noms. Â Fries were passable, but the chips were freshly made and quite good.
The atmosphere was very lively especially for a weeknight with sports and beers all around. Â The noise level could've been better, but still manageable for conversation. Â Wouldn't mind coming back if I needed a place to chill with friends in the area.
Came here after a night at Drake's Barrel House, meeting with a bunch of friends late in the evening.
The place was really lively. Lots of people, lots of TVs and sports - quite the place to be at night with buddies for a beer or two. (or more~)
Our group arrived a little before the cook closed shop, so we were able to get our grub on with lots of finger foods (cheese sticks, fries, and chips w/ guacamole). Good stuff, and the guac had a little kick to it which was delightfully surprising. :)
The place was pretty rowdy with all the people, but not in a negative way at all. If I had to recommend a local bar in the Alameda area, I'd come here.
It's a very nice, fun and upbeat sports bar with great tv's, great space and good food. The food is very affordable yet very good. I find it to be a very easy, down to earth and great spot to watch your sports. A lot of regulars, sports lovers and everyday people watching sports. Plus, they have great french fries, I had the sampler dish which is an assortment of chicken wings, onion rings, zuchini which is simple easy on your pocketbook and tasty dish.
Review Source:Found out about McGee's on <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FLivingSocial.com&s=8329b26807d325b958a287377d89ae67ec2fd4741c3aed3b2485df7c33ae8a1a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://LivingSocial.com</a> - bought a coupon to check them out...menu has a good variety, easy to order and check out. Â Nice that they have their own parking lot - drove in, parked, and food was ready!
Burgers are very flavorful, loved the amount of juice with the french dip, and upgraded the salad to a large for $1.00 - such a deal! Â Will definitely go back - maybe even try eating there next time instead of getting it to go :o)
Stopped by after a Warriors game, hoping to catch some late night appetizers. The kitchen was closed, so no grub, but the party at the bar was in full swing.
Had a few relatively priced drinks. They earned an extra star just by carrying my favorite rum, Flor de Caña.  Friendly barkeeps a bonus.
The ambiance was a quirky mix of young hipster types and old retirees, of blue-collar with a small element of thug thrown in. I dig the jukeboxes & pool table & flat panels lining the bar. I'd come back to catch a game, or do the bar scene again.
Okay, I went to this place recently with a Little League Baseball team. I WOULD NOT recommend this place to large groups. Â It is the loudest, most annoying, crowded place I've ever been in, in Alameda. It reminds me of those super crowded bars in Little Italy in San Francisco. Â I always thought they were over rated too.
Inside they have a large bar, which you have to pass through to get to the restaurant. There may be a back entrance, around the places you can sit in the back. Â I think that's how some folks got inside. I saw another Little League team, near the back.
There's a large menu sign, that's super low, on the ground. It is written in large print, but with my old eyes, I had to stand very close to read it. Doing this made me get out of line, and so I lost my place in line. Â You order at a walk up cashier. Â Standing there trying to decide what to order, I was asked if I could "not stand directly in front of the menu" by another patron. Â Fair enough, but I don't know how else I can order, without looking at the menu, for the first time I was there. Â Lost one star, for unfair positioning of menu, not very smart restaurant management.
I stood off to the side, for another few minutes, just to be polite, while quickly determining I would never set foot in this establishment again. Â Too harsh? Â
I'll be fair and give it three stars. Â The place was super crowded, and the food looked good coming out. Â But I refuse to be a sheep, and feel obligated to eat at establishments that are SUPER OVER CROWDED, just to be hip. Â I don't roll like that, and frankly, I think they are over rated. Â
The bar was so crowded, that as we left, I had to bump into several folks, and push my way out of the place. I'm considering filing a report with the fire marshall. I'm not sure if the number of folks was over the legal allowed, but it certainly felt like it. Â
Horrible ambiance. Â Great food. Â Poor Menu Placement and Ordering procedures. Â
Not recommended on busy nights like Saturday. Might be okay on a Monday.
Friendly pub environment, a great place for some hearty food (especially if you're looking for a spot to watch sports). Â Beer selection is just fine with a few craft brews on rotation at all times, though not an enormous selection.
Also quite kid accommodating with jukebox, family environment, and a few games. Â Kids friendly meals like fried chicken or sliders were hits, also had home made coloring kits.
Note table service is for drinks, head to the back and get your food order in if you are so inclined. Â They will call your name when the order is up.
McGee's is a no-frills bar with a small town vibe. Â It's dark, dingy and smells like beer. Â It's really all you can ask for in a bar.
The burgers are cheap and delicious but the shoestring fries are the real winner. Â We could probably eat baskets of them until we explode.
The waitresses are awesome and remembered our drink order by our third visit.
McGee's is a great place to grab a beer relax after work.
Other than Lucky 13, this is a place to go for a heartier beer selection on Park st. McGee's however is not dimly lit and does accept credit cards. More of a mom and pop type bar and grill with a truly unique "old school" feel to it. Most of the bar staff are seasoned vets, you want to know the right way to make a drink, ask them. You order your food at a counter in the back, most of which is above average for pub fare, and essentially serve yourself the entire time.
Good place for a game as they have a giant projector screen in the back, but a very narrow bar makes huge events a little more tricky to find a comfortable spot.
All in all, a class act and a great local staple.
Darn, my brother (Jay) beat me on yelp and commented before me. Â Find his review, mine is the same plus this...
This place, just about more than any, is a true Alameda hometown establishment. Â It's small, quaint & family owned and very easy to have a good time. Â Good place for groups when you time it right. Â Their fried chicken is no joke, the burgers legit, the fries...are not your ordinary fries and the drinks extra well made if you get my drift.
A dinner and drinks at McGee's is where I go my first night back in town and sometimes the last before I take off again.
There are three Irish bars in Alameda and McGee's stands out above the rest. St Patrick's day is a day of eating corned beef and cabbage, drinking green beer and drinking Guiness beer. McGee's offers all three and it seems that everyone is friendly and knows each other at this drinking establishment. The big wooden bar is something out of the TV show Cheers.
Kudos for the green Irish decorations, green beads and green beer ...where else would you want to be on St Patrick's Day. Also hats off to the great bar tenders who served the green beer until it was gone. After the corned beef and cabbage (with homemade bread and red potatoes) and the green beer I was stuff to the gills. The bad part is my friends were ready to do another pitcher of Guiness.
Today was my son's last day at his present school. This fall he will be attending classes in Portland, of which that decision was made after a long and heartfelt set of conversations with his mother and Gayle. I will miss being a full-time Dad and it was a bittersweet and tearful experience as we said our goodbyes to a fine group of teachers who had really made a difference in his education.
After that, I was in the mood for a burger and a beer. Earlier, I had Yelped around Alameda and decided that McGee's Bar and Grill might be a good choice. And with the Alameda Market across the street, parking was not a problem.
When we entered through the bar side of the establishment, I had some doubts about having my son in tow. However, there's ample seating further on and to the left. It also took some time to get properly oriented. First of all, this place is a little more darkly lit than I'm used to. Second, although there is table service for drinks, you have to order your food from the counter. While there, you hand your credit card over for your food order to be rung up. The card is then handed over to the drink waiter, who will then run and present your entire bill. The system worked, but I'm still not sure I fully understand the logic. Â At the same time, the waitress was friendly, helpful, patient, and best of all, kind to my son.
I ordered the Juicy Lucy burger and they weren't kidding. The cheese is inside and the first bite had the juice flying all over the place, including the front of my shirt. But boy was it delicious! I gobbled up every bite and drip and than included sopping some of it up with some very tasty fries. And everything went well with a good and hoppy pint of Racer IPA. My son also very much enjoyed his cheeseburger sliders, some of my fries, and 2 full glasses or root beer.
In between, we looked at some memories of his school year. That included the Year Book and "goodbye and good luck" card signed by many, and a special picture album from the school that included a few heartfelt notes from his talented teachers. It was a great time for this father and son to spend some quality time together.
McGee's is a well known spot right on the main drag known as Park St on the island. Â Have you been there? Â Read your Yelp reviews people. Â They are there to help us all.
The burger was good, the beer was fine.  The house Cab was unexpectedly  good.  The club sandwich was blah.  The shoe string fries were pretty good.  The self-serve water/ice was nice.  The restroom smelled.  The band was setting up and I knew it was going to be loud.  The clientele made me feel young again.  The place was very clean and the decor was  sensible. Plenty of sports televisions were viewable from most seats.  The dark woods mixed with the cool reds and greens nicely for a touch of richness on the walls.
How do you sum up McGee's Bar & Grill? Â I don't know. Â Jessica P wrote "Shady Pines in Alameda" which is a hysterically vivid picture of this place. Â I use to work with a guy that was regular here, and he loved it. Â We had lunch here about 5 years ago, and I don't remember the crowd too well. Â However, this Saturday night revealed this place is mellow enough for the young at heart along with the salt & pepper haired early bird special types.
We had an hour to kill between taking care of some business across the street and supporting a friend with a gig a couple of doors down. Â We needed fuel. We had the awkward plight of being dressed in full on 80's garb. The hubby had been to McGee's before and remembered it being pretty laid back.
People stared but I can't really hold it against them. Â I was wearing a corset, arm warmers and a huge bow on my head.
The burger was pretty good. Â The shoe string fries were ok. Â The house wine was surprisingly phenomenal.
Eating without practicing is becoming a re-occuring theme with my dragonboat team. Â This will be an issue on race day when we're all drunk and fat ...
After a not wet, cold and grueling practice, 6 of us came here to eat. Â We were looked down upon by the 3 softball leaques who regularly come here after their games ... *they* earned their beers. Â
Despite the chaos of the crowds, the Stanley cup playoffs on TV - the service was excellent. Â The chips and gauc were great - chips were piping hot deep fried and delicious. Â Rest of the food was mediocre (chicken wings were a bit dry, and my burger was rather dry and tasted like a generic meat patty), but I'll be back. Â With their extensive menu there's bound to be hit and miss food but what McGee's does a great job at is providing a friendly place for friends to hang out ... workout not included.
OK good beer on tap. Â That is worth 3 stars right there. Â Unfortunately the food leaves a lot be desired. Â The friendly waitresses were on strike or something tonight cuz we got the surly kind. Â We ordered 2 pitchers of beer and similar to Art's Crab shack, they don't mess with the paying up front thing. Â They would not drop the pitcher until after they saw our $12. Â Not to mention that the quesadilla had "the minimum amount of cheese the law requires" according to my husband and the pico de gallo was just plain gross looking - all green and unripe.
For some reason it reminded me of ordering at the counter at Merritt Bakery. Â I am not sure exactly why though. Â The lumpias on the menu totally threw me too. Â For the most part they serve Mexican (the burritos come with fries WTF?) and burgers with a few random items thrown in. Â The only menu available is the huge one on the wall and the waitresses only sling drinks. Â You have to go to the counter for your food to order and to pick it up. Â This place is really strange. Â I was totally expecting fish and chips but no, far from it.
Under the water and through the bridge to Alameda I go... in search of a burger and beer.
I'm wandering on Park looking for an inviting place to have a burger and fries with a beer. Â Seemed simple enough, but I had to walk all the way down to McGee's.
Steak fries with a buffalo burger. Â Now you're talking. Â Some of my favorite local microbrews on tap. Nice.
Food comes out pretty quickly, but it's a slight disappointment. Â The buffalo burger is pretty much a pre-packaged frozen burger. Â Well, OK, it's better for me than beef still. Â Bun is just a basic grocery store bun out of a pack from your Aunt Minnie's picnic. Â It was otherwise fine though for the reasonable price. Â
Fries are equally important to me. Â So I was a let down to see some of my potatoes with some nasty black spots, but that was just a couple. Â The rest were big chunky fries (shoestrings optional).
Overall, price ratio to burger/fry/beer quality was above slightly average so I'm willing to give them 4 stars for having some good beer options ($4 pint).
Otherwise, it's a regular ol' sports bar in the neighborhood with the shortest shuffleboard table that I've ever seen (PS I love shuffleboard).
My Doctor's gonna be pissed. The cholestorol is already way too high. So what do I do? Force of habit. I walk in to McGee's with a friend for lunch today. "I'll have the french dip."
Sigh. I'll tell you what. The Mexican guy that works in the Irish bar can make a helluva French sandwich. The au jus was perfect temperature. The bread held up under numerous dips and the beef was butter. Shoestring fries to boot!
Everybody was freindly from the guy at the food counter to the bartendress who poured my Stella.
If you live in the area, it's tough not to see someone you know here. Great neighborhood pub&grub.
