Mexicali

We went to Mexicali last night with a Groupon and were very impressed with the food.  It was fairly empty for a Friday night...hopefully business picks up for them.

Chips and salsa at the table were delicious.  We shared the chorizo fondue appetizer and both got chicken fajitas.  Yum!  Tequila cooler cocktails were tasty too.  We recommend this place!

I live near this restaurant and love Mexican food so I was very excited when they opened. Unfortunately, my two experiences there insured there will not be a third. The first time I went was when they first opened. The service and food were both mediocre but I was still hopeful they would improve with time. Recently they participated in a groupon for a dinner for four . It was a great deal, $69 for 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, and 4 drinks. I purchased it thinking this would be a great opportunity to give this local small business a second shot. I took my parents along with my husband out on a Friday night. Since the meal was a disaster I will summarize the highlights and lowlights. 1). We were told we had to bring printed copy of groupon, that the code from a smart phone was not accepted, so my husband drove home after we ordered to get the printed copy 2) The drink orders came wrong - my dad ordered a  margarita- with salt- When we asked  for a correction the waitress quickly remedied and brought out a salted glass but went to charge us for an additional drink at the end on the bill! 3) the apps were the highlight- guacamole made to order table side and a generous and tasty sampler platter 4) entrees were unremarkable- two people ordered steak dishes that were extremely tough to eat and we had to ask for steak knives multiple times 5) here's where they went off the tracks... When the bill came they were refusing to honor the groupon! Anyone whose purchased a groupon is aware the purchase price pays for the services or good listed minus tax and tip on the original charge. When the bill came they subtracted the $69 paid to groupon and said we owed the difference! What the ??? That's full price then! The manager on duty said the owner had put a "special line" in indicating the full cost would still be charged. I read through ALL the fine print and nothing was included anywhere. After much arguing I finally paid the tip and tax and left mortified with my parents, I assure you we will not be back! Buyer beware if  you have brought or are thinking of purchasing a groupon.
