This place is absolutely terrible. Â My favorite Mexican dish is veggie fajitas, which normally means a sizzling plate of onions, peppers, tomatoes, etc. Â So I ordered my usual and got a lukewarm plate of uncooked carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli... seriously? Â It had no seasoning on it at all, so I paid about $15 for a plate of uncooked veggies. Â Awesome. Â Couldn't even eat it I was so angry.
WIll not be back, whenever I have a craving for Mexican I will head across the street to San Felipe where I know the food is good and the beer is cheap :o)
We have been here several times. Â The service and food has always been good. Â We both like the chips and salsa which come before the meal. Â The atmosphere is good too. Â The bar is fairly large and they have TV's spread out throughout the restaurant. Â My wife thinks I should have rated this place as a four starts.
Review Source:We have been here on several occasions. This time however; the service was mediocre and the food was cold and not well prepared at all. Our table had received our order in bit and pieces instead of all at once. My Fajita's that I ordered were said to be taking longer. One would expect that when Fajita's are ordered; the arrive with a sizzle and a plume of smoke as well as the undeniable smell that fill the restaurant. My Fajita's arrive sans all of that. The re-fried beans were old and cold as the cheese was not melted and the beans had a skin on them which just means they had sat out or under a heat lamp for far too long. I asked to speak to the Manager whom did all he could to ignore our table. When. He did arrive (10 minutes later) he was very argumentative and arrogant. I calmly said I can understand that he may be busy but to ignore a customer is not right .Also to note is; the place was NOT that busy. Â To be blunt; he could have cared less and spent the time at our table telling us how busy he was and then blamed the new cook and new server for the absolutley craptastic showing of what should have been Mexican food. This was our final trip to this establishment.
Review Source:This is a great little place that offers good service, good food, and some entertainment. I live close by so my husband and I end up eating here fairly often. The decor is comfortable and inviting with the standard murals and over sized wooden booths. The bar area is notably large and attractive. The tequila selection at the bar is extensive and ranges from the cheap stuff to some of the best tequila available mass market. They have it shelved interestingly too.
While dining, we have caught the karaoke and a couple of entertainers basically singing on the tiny stage with a keyboard. If you love kitsch, I highly recommend any of it. I watched an elderly man in a trucker hat belt out Frank Sinatra like nobodies business at karaoke and giggled through a sincere yet loungey version of "Desperado."
The bathrooms deserve mention here as well. They are well appointed, clean, have touchless paper-towel dispensers and the faucets and sinks are upgraded and just fun to use.
The food is pretty good. It's standard Mexican American. Chips and spicy salsa as a starter and they have a special where you can get an appetizer and two meals for $20.00. We have tried almost everything on the menu (except the queen tilapia) and have not had any "bad" food. We do enjoy the drink specials as well. They have huge beers and what I feel is the best mojito in the area.
My only complaint is we always leave so very full!
Mom and Dad wanted to take me and my husband out to lunch for our anniversary, so we headed up to our favorite Mexican dive in Leland, NC - La Costa. Unfortunately, it was closed so we decided to try this new upstart outside the Waterford neighborhood just off Highway 17 south of Wilmington.
Mexico Viejo Bar and Grill, billed as "the real taste of Mexican cuisine", is a decent addition to the ever-growing Brunswick county area. Perhaps to entice new customers, all lunches were being offered for $3.99. Normal prices ranged from $5.99 - the make your own combo, pick one item (seriously?) - to $7.25 for a plate of fajitas. I tried the lunch quesadillas, and the chicken was deliciously seasoned with more than a hint of spice. If you like your mexican-american food spicy, you'll really enjoy Mexico Viejo, where even the salsa sets your tongue and lips atingle. (and if you like it really hot, they have plenty of picante sauce tableside)
Mexico Viejo seems to have something for everyone. Lots of big, flat screen TVs for watching sports, a full bar, a children's menu that includes chicken fingers, cheeseburgers, and fries, and - lo and behold - karaoke on Thursday nights!
