Gone Nuts Over Nutt Street Comedy Room

Andy and I decided to have an extended Valentine's weekend at the Beach. Since it was cold, we looked for alternate entertainment from our normal beach vacation activities and were extremely pleased to find Nutt Street Bar & Comedy Room- Wilmington's first (and only) full time comedy club.  Although it is called "Nutt Street" it is actually located at 255 North Front Street and for an out-of-towner it was not the easiest place to find.  We found 255 Front Street with no issue, but still had to search a bit for the comedy club. There are 3 businesses located at this address, all through the one main entrance. The comedy club is actually in the basement and the sign was not obvious from the street.  On the left side of the 'lobby' entrance, there is a staircase down to the club. It was a rather nasty, chilly night (even snowed) and we went down the stairs to find a wonderful and warm room in the basement that exceeded our expectations! We walked through the door to a relatively small space with low ceilings exuding an air of friendly intimacy. It was a surprise, a very pleasant one, that we were not ushered to 'assigned' seats. You get to pick your seat! Awesome perk. So we scoped out the options which included several rows of seats surrounding the stage like the ones in a high school auditorium with red velvet cushioned back and bottom. Along the periphery of the theater seats were high tops tables. We arrived about 7:15pm and most seats were still vacant so we selected the second row...close but not too close to the stage and comedians. The service was efficient and friendly. There was a beer and a vodka special...a vodka and soda with a splash of pineapple juice for me and a beer for Andy. Great, especially on a weekend night. The MC, who I think was the owner of the club, got the party started. He interacted closely with the audience. He asked if there were any new people and there were very few, which Andy and I were among this minority. When Andy mentioned we were from Raleigh, he said Nutts wasn't like Goodnights and I can attest to that fact...much more laid back and friendly atmosphere. Next up was a local comedian, who was very entertaining and got the crowd warmed up.  The headliner, Kenny Zimlinghaus, was visiting from NYC. Kenny has a morning talk show on Cosmo Radio Sirius and had several funny skits about females. He had many local fans turn out to the club.  We had not heard of him before, but he was excellent and kept us laughing.  Nutt Street is typically open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with two shows each night.  We really liked the intimate space, which enabled the crowd to interact with the comedians.  There were essentially no bad seats and the sound system was very good.  All in all it was one of the better comedy clubs we have been to and the next time we visit the beach/Wilmington area, even in the summer, we will be sure to spend a night at Nutts.
