Confession---years ago, I was a hater. Â I wouldn't step into this place. Â Why? Because it was too dang smokey. Â But, then the glorious Kirkwood restaurant smoking was enacted and suddenly, Duffy's turned from ugly stepsister into Duffyrella.
Duffy's has an extensive menu, but DH and I tend to get the same things. Â We split a burger and a bountiful wedge salad. Â We both just love the bleu cheese. Â My kids have had the chili and the pizza and are happy campers with those items. My mom enjoys those ole' school potato skins!
Duffy's is a busy place. Â Don't be surprised if there's a 45 minute wait on any given evening. Â However, a few folks get tired of waiting and seek sustenance elsewhere, so the wait doesn't usually take the entire 45 minutes.
If you can bear it, try to hold out for the front room. Â The back room doesn't have quite the scruffy, clubby ambiance. Â I call it kid-ville. Â It's noisy and bright with a background of video games. Â Me no likee!
Four Stars for great service, BOGO Pizza (yea, I'm serious), and cheap Rolling Rock and PBR.
The Service: Straightforward with no extra perks. I'm not looking to be fluffed, I just want my ice cold cruisers and grub in a timely manner. Our server was to the point and not overwhelming. I even think I told my GF she had a "yellow aura." Don't judge me. She had a very nice energy about her. **sigh. I said "aura" in public.
The Pie: The pizza as far as I can tell, having just moved to St. Louis, was traditional St. Louis style pizza and was cheap and delicious. Don't forget the BOGO! Two whole pizzas for the asking price of just less than a $14 burger. Disclaimer: I think the BOGO pizza is a Tuesday night special.
Brewskis: Now on to the fantastic, highly coveted, remarkably delicious, tastebudderingly tasteful.... $3 pitcher/weird oversized pastic measuring cup of beer! On tap that night for the low low price of 3 salamis was PBR and Rolling Rock. Get your lips on some cheap, watery deliciousness, and enjoy your Duffy's experience!
I know this isn't a really fancy or unique type of place, but for some reason I really like the food here. Yes, it is a little ordinary (some may call it boring), but I just always have a great meal when I eat here. The pizza is delish but what I really love is the reuben. However, I guess what I get is probably just a corned beef sandwich, because I have them take off the sauce and onions! Â Either way, the food never disappoints and there's not usually a wait...two things that I like!
Review Source:Went to Mike Duffy's in Kirkwood last Tuesday afternoon about 3pm. Hardly nobody in the place. The Service was terrible, our waitress was like a robot. Our French Onion soup was cold and she looked at us like she couldn't comprehend when we asked to warm it up. Besides that it took her forever to warm it up - then when we did get it - it tasted like that instant soup made by Lipton with some cheese barely melted on it. I had a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant that was just ok - but the reason I gave them 1 Star is because the Onion Rings were fantastic. - The chairs and tables all look dirty in there too. NEVER going back. Terrible Service and Bad food!
Review Source:Happy hour on a Wednesday night... Not bad, but won't set your world on fire. Kelly is a great bartender always making sure our drinks were full. Â The chili-topped burger was okay but only because of the chili. The burger, though made in their version of medium rare (a bit pink in the middle), was dry. Â The homemade chips certainly made up for it!
Review Source:Yay! I'm a fan. (I just made that up. Catchy, right?)
Met up with a friend for dinner last night at Mike Duffy's and neither of us had been before. I liked the place, it was comfortable, bigger inside than it looked from the outside. We were seated right away by some blond girl who looked like she was physically incapable of smiling. Oh well, she wasn't our server so we didn't deal with her surliness much.
Our server was friendly and on top of things. My friend and I ordered the wedge salads (because the picture of the salad in the menu made it look like the Greatest Thing Ever) and we ordered a cheese StL style pizza to share.
The wedge salad was really enjoyable. It was large and pretty basic but the bleu cheese dressing was really good (it was drizzled some with a balsamic - yum) and, c'mon, dressing is what it's all about with the wedge, particularly when it's ordered sans bacon. The cherry tomatoes were hard though so I picked most of those off. I prefer diced tomato on my salads. The salad came with a small semi-warm roll that was of zero consequence.
The pizza was quite good. It was like Cecil's but tastier. It was like Cecil's sexier friend whose parents didn't stick him with a cock-blocker name like Cecil. Quite tasty. Would definitely order again.
I also had a (couple) Long Island Iced Tea(s) and it (they) were pretty good. Semi strong but smooth.
Overall, I liked the place and can see going back. It was quiet enough to have a conversation (which I prefer). They have a pretty wide menu and I also happen to know they do trivia on Thursday nights because I wiped the competition out last night. Okay, I didn't actually play but, had I played, I am pretty sure I would have gotten at least a question or two correct. And that's not just the over-confident braggadocio in me talking either.
This is where I've gotten my karaoke fix most often during my time in St. Louis. Friends recommended it to me, and I've generally had a blast every Wednesday night.
Karaoke is 10 p.m.-1 a.m.. There's no stage, but there's plenty of space at the front of a room near the back of the dark bar. The binder of songs is super-thick, and there's definitely enough variety to please everyone.
There usually are "pitcher specials" during karaoke. I'm not entirely sure what the specials are, since I don't drink, but I know that friends have multiple pitchers because the beer is so cheap.
Yay for being a non-smoking bar! Duffy's is located just off Kirkwood Road, so it's easy to grab dinner first and then head to the bar to sing. I pretty much come here only to sing and hang out with friends on Wednesday nights; I generally leave the eating and drinking to others. I've had Duffy's berry cobbler-pie-thing, though, and it wasn't bad.
The atmosphere is generally welcoming, though it can be a bit clique-y from the people who have been coming for years. The bartenders are nice once they get to know you, but they sometimes take a while to take your drink order when they don't. There are many tvs around the bar and in the karaoke room, and they usually are tuned to ESPN.
*Disclosure: I am a karaoke DJ in another bar for the man who is in charge of karaoke here. This review is based upon many, many, MANY visits prior to my employment through him, however.
This place is a vortex of MEH-ness.
We were forced to wait a fairly long time because there was a big crowd of prostitots ahead of us. Â Nobody should be forced to wait so long for such mediocrity.
The spinach artichoke dip appetizer was no different than the spinach artichoke dip you get at countless other places.
The bleu cheese and bacon burger that I ordered, for lack of a better word, kinda sucked. Â The burger didn't have much flavor, and neither did the bacon bits and bleu cheese dressing that adorned it.
In other words, this is a completely typical American pub and grill, the likes of which are all too common.
I've been to Duffy's a few times, once for lunch, mostly late night. Lunch was solid. I got a bison burger, which was just slightly dry but good if unspectacular none the less. The sweet potato fries I got with it, however, were surprisingly good. Really much better than I expected. Prices are fairly standard for this type of restaurant. Problem is, this is Kirkwood. There's plenty to eat here, at similar prices, and a hole lot of it is better.
Atmosphere is generic sports bar. They have a juke box, one of those new digital ones that I would probably love if it wasn't a buck a song, and the crowd's song selection sometimes...leaves something to be desired. At least for me. Generally the place is kinda crowded, especially late night.
Service is mixed. When I went there for lunch our server was bright, cheerful, and most importantly quick. Needed more water? She was there with more water. Things like that. When I've gone at night, well, I don't know if I've ever seen a dourer-looking group of bartenders, but usually they get right to you, get your drink, and move on. However, recently a friend I was with went up to order an appetizer. Now, it was getting close to when the kitchen closed, but he still got there a good ten minutes before closing. Problem is, they ignored him for 15 minutes and then told him the kitchen was closed. Well, yeah, it is NOW.
Now, why then do I come to Duffy's? $3 Rolling Rock pitchers pretty much every night. Might be every night, actually. I like me some cheap beer, I will not lie.
Duffy's is a mediocre place. It's definitely not the worst place to go, and it has some features (read cheep beer and sweet potato fries) that make it worth hitting up from time to time. Still, it isn't close to being the best place in Kirkwood.
They hook you up on Facebook with upcoming menu items...letting you know whats that day's special, etc.
and they have excellent sandwiches. I had the Chicken Club- huge and tasty, nothing fancy, but definitely good.
The mixed veggies were hot-and not over cooked.
Service was friendly-and fast.
Owner said "hello" and it was nice to get acknowleged.
When you have one of those days, this is the place to go to drown your sorrows in a tasty bar burger, beer-battered onion rings, and a cold frosty one. The chicken salad croissant is also quite good if you don't want to go the typical bar food route. Pizza has a nice crispy thin crust, but is topped with provel...nasty in my book. Overall, a great neighborhood pub with good all-american fare and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Review Source:The hubs and I grabbed a quick lunch here today in attempts to catch a World Cup game. Catching the World Cup game was about the highlight of the experience. They have many beers on tap, which he enjoyed, and a lot of TVs which made both of us happy. I had a bowl of chili because I was freezing inside, and my husband chose a liquid lunch of Bass. :) The chili was good with the fresh grated cheese and onions, but nothing to write home about. The service was fine, nothing special, and the atmosphere left something to be desired. I think the inside just needs a little freshening up because I felt grimy after leaving. I'm not sure that I'll come back unless I have to.
Review Source:I just had a quick PIZZA at Mike Duffy's before heading to the high school play close by. Â I am not a big fan of thin crust, but this pizza was served hot and tasty. Â We were in out out quickly, but did not feel rushed. Â
I always see 2-3 people I know there. Â A quick wave and hello is always a plus. Â It is a place to be seen.
This plave it definately overrated. I use to come here a lot after salsa class and before work. (since it was in Webster Groves.) Usually I got their a 15 minutes before they were suppose to stop serving food (and they still tell you they stopped serving food.) Â And everytime I have been there and maybe only 5 people at the bar it still takes about 10 minutes to get a drink. If this didn't have a good set up it would be one star.
Review Source:I don't know how many lunches and dinners I have had cut short between my "mommy friends" and me due to our fidgety children and their need to get up and get moving. By far the worst part of entering into Mommyland is how quickly your list of "must try restaurants" turns into "must get a babysitter" requirements. I know for me it seems like the only places that I have to choose from if I want to bring my kid to go get some dinner and a beer include either a pizza buffet or a life sized singing mouse. Yuck.
Can't mom get a decent bite and a beer?
That's where Mike Duffy's comes in. Locally owned and operated, Duffys is one of the most adult and kid friendly eateries in the Lou. The place is always packed, the restaurant is chocked full of bustling kids and adults alike and they even offer video games, an extensive kids menu, not to mention kids eat FREE...yes you heard it...FREE on Tuesdays.
When it comes to the food, think high end bar menu. While best known for their pizza and burgers, my personal favorites are the chicken salad croissant (seriously delicious) and the three cheese lasagna. One funny little side note: they even have a live web cam on their website which is kind of fun for the voyeur in me
I'm very impressed with the pizza from Mike Duffy's -- thin, thin crispy crust with such melty provel cheese, it makes me wonder if there's more to the 'provel' mystery than just cheddar, Swiss and provolone, something the natives of St. Louis may not be telling us (e.g., It's in the water!). Â Whatever it is, it keeps you wanting more no matter how full you may be, just for that warm, gooey sensation. Â
Drink prices are unbelievable, especially for something containing whiskey. Â
And they carry a Ms. Pacman stand-up arcade, people. Â Duffy's endeared to us from that point even before we'd had the pizza and drinks! Â ;)
Provel cheese... Â What the hell is provel cheese? Â Throughout my entire life, we have ventured to St. Louis to visit relatives and eat at Frank and Helen's to get pizza with Provel Cheese. Â You'd think it's a mixture of provolone & mozzarella. Â Not at all! Â And, when we ate at Duffy's last night when visiting mom, we let our taste buds deduce that Provel must be some sort of cheddar cheese mixed with mozzarella. Â Nope! Â Per Wikipedia, and I think they're right, Provel is produced with cheddar, Swiss, and provolone. It is soft at room temperature, with a gooey and almost buttery texture, and thus has a low melting point.
Judging from the menu outside, Duffy's looked boring, just like most bar-food establishments. Â But shit, the pizza rocked! Â
New Yorkers and Chicago peeps are SOOO proud of their 'za. Â There is actually a "St. Louis Pizza" thing! Â That IS boasted on menus now! Â And that's because of the Provel cheese served on extremely thin crispy crust. Â It is different, used rarely outside of St. Louis and has been around since 1947 (again per Wiki). Â It's very good. Â Very creamy. Â Melty in the mouth kind of cheese. Â
Duffy's 'za rocks! Â And I've wondered what the **** Â Provel was since I was a little kid (other than good!). Â Eating Duffy's St. Louis style pizza last night inspired me enough to find out. Â And I did. Â And you can get Provel from the deli at the local Shop 'n Save (should be called "Try-n-Save", btw). Â And I got fatter.
This seems to be the place I end up when I try to go out in Kirkwood and everything else is too packed. Â Mike Duffy's somehow never gets that packed. Â That either says something about the bar, the food, or the people that generally hang out in Kirkwood. Â I have no idea what it says or if that's a bad or good thing, but hey, it must say something. Â
The food is decent, but nothing great. Â The service is much the same. Â I never wait forever for service, but I have certainly sat in wait for long stretches with an empty glass. Â The beer is super cheap after 10 on the weekends, you can get a pitcher for $4 I believe. Â Where can you beat that? Â And the awesome green astro-turfish carpet, well, that certainly gives the place some charm. Â
It really is just a decent little sports bar off the main drag in Kirkwood. Â It's nothing great, but it will certainly fill your pub and grill needs. Â The TVs are not huge though, so if you are looking for a big screen sports experience, I suggest seeking entertainment elsewhere.
lunch here is a kirkwood tradition...
fat onion rings, good anglo quesas, hamburgers & fries, beer... i like to lunch here when i am occasionally in kirkwood. usually lots of people so may be a wait at meal times. pretty good chili, too.
not meant to be a 5-star restaurant, but can be lots of fun! wait service is adequate, not particularly attentive, but probably depends on the day or person you get.
just off the main drag in kirkwood...
