I don't write many reviews but the service here is horrendous. Mind you, I hadn't even made it into the establishment.Today, Â I called to inquire about the concept and the hours as I heard they close early sometimes.
The person answered the phone, did not offer his name nor did he mention the name of the establishment. I asked if this was Moderna and he said, "Uhhh Yeah!"
He started talking to people in the background mid conversation. I asked the operations hours and he said "Huh" and began talking to people in the background again. When I repeated my question, he replied very curtly that they were closing in 15 minutes (10:30). Later, I read on their web-site they should've closed at 2:30.
I advised him of his sub-par service and he offered a half-hearted apology.
To survive outside of the perimeter you have to provide stellar service to compensate for the smaller populations. Unfortunately, Moderna may meet the fate of many OTP establishments as they don't commit to service excellence!
Was in North Atlanta for memorial day weekend and decided to give this place a try. I agree with some other reviews that this place is going through growing pains (can't tell if its a nightclub or a restaurant).
We tried a variety of tacos and they were all great. If I return to Atlanta I would definitely go out of my way to get back here again.
The menu is very well labeled for people with food allergies!
This place is located on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs and boy has it undergone a facelift from the previous restaurant that was here. Â I'm not going to act like I know about contemporary design and all that so I'll just say the decor is very chic and stylish. Â It looks awesome inside of there. Â
The lighting is colored and varied. Â This creates a nice visuals for the atmosphere, but it was hard to identify the ingredients in the food because the light distorted the colors. Â Small thing; some people just like to stare their food down before they inhale it. Â
They have a wall that looks like it is made up of grass and moss. Â They have a big screen t.v. over the bar. Â I liked. Â
Okay, I have to say the chips are freakin good. Â Slight nutty taste, crisp, and light. Â I filled up on those as I could not stop with the eating of them. Â I am gaurenteed to return just for that reason. Â The cheese dip is another winner. Â I think it is called Chihuahua cheese and it was a little bit spicy and delcious. Â I'm telling you, I will be back for that. Â
It was lunch, so I had a bowl of corn and poblano chowder. Â It was awesome. Â I sucked it down as though it were my last meal. Â Others at the table had burritos, salmon quesadilla, chicken quesadillas, and chicken mole. Â Plates were cleaned, I tell you. Â Clean. Â
Service was pretty good. Â One person got onions and peppers on their plate when they requested not to have any. They quickly fixed the problem. Â They were nice enough to give us individual checks with no problems. Â
As I return and try other, sure to be fabulous, items on this menu, this may become a five star situation. Â I'll look forward to it.
Ventured here recently with a friend for an early dinner and we were pleasantly surprised. The building sticks out like a sore thumb (not a bad thing) in the strip mall it's in on Roswell Rd. Opposite end from Enzo.
Slightly upgraded twist on classic Mexican dishes. We shared the tlyacoyo which was two masa cakes with panela, chihuahua cheese, salsa verde and grilled shrimp. It was delicious! Probably my favorite thing.
We shared the salmon/spinach/caramelized onion quesadilla and each had a taco - cozumel shrimp (marinated in habañero) and calamari. We enjoyed it all.
I had a sangria, she had a caipirinha de Brazil - both spot on for us.
Service was OK. For it to be near empty and early for the dinner service, our waitress disappeared a couple of times for long periods of time. But everyone was friendly enough.
They have a nice patio space which I'm sure will be busy as the summer approaches.
The space itself is interesting and bit schizo. It is very spacious and nice inside with big screen TVs, a DJ booth, small dance floor and club-like lights. It doesn't really feel like a restaurant inside but more of a nightclub that happens to sell good food for a nightclub. They seem to have a lot of events here at night and it is probably a good time if you are looking for something in that area. It was just a little odd to have purple, blue and green lights strobing across our food.
I will definitely return to try more of the menu.
Look for the white side of the building in the strip mall. Â Overall, good enough. Â A little disorganized and our waitress was cute in how she mispronounced the names of some dishes, but good service. Â Food was good enough to come back again, but won't be rushing back. Â Nice decor, but it looks a little out of place for the theme of the food. Â Nothing stood out with any of our parties dishes but not any huge issues.
Review Source:I decided to host a pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration for my social group (Atlanta New In Town Meetup), and decided this was the perfect location because 1) It looked really trendy; 2) It was near my place; and 3) We saw it on LivingSocial.
I'm really a sucker for all things glamourous and trendy, and being a transplant from NYC, I'm going to have a better time if I'm in a relaxing atmosphere. I loved the fact that they gave our group of 20 the VIP cabana space. There was a mix of purple and indigo lighting, and the vines overhead made it look like a set for "Midsummer's Night Dream". Â It was perfect for lounging and chatting.
The problem is, the only tables available were essentially cocktail tables. It wasn't very conducive for eating, because you spent most of the time balancing your dinner in your lap. We also had two servers who seemed overworked and stressed out. People were going to the bar for drinks rather than putting in orders. When we arrived, it took me 40 minutes to get a cocktail and a Coke. My appetizer actually arrived before my beverage did, and when I remarked on this, the waitress made a snappy remark back.
The food was decent, but nothing special. The drinks were very good. As a club/lounge, I'd think this place was 5 stars. Since food and service mattered, I can only give it 3.
The manager really did his best to work with us, accepting our Living Social voucher, even though it was "not valid on special occasions" (apparently, two days before Cinco de Mayo constitutes a special occasion. Since the place was empty by 10 and there was no entertainment, I don't see how.) One member of our party had his credit card misplaced by the bar, and when it was found, received a complimentary shot of tequila. The manager thanked us for bringing in the group, and was an all-around nice guy. Things just seemed really chaotic and disorganized. Despite having 2 waitresses, we ended up having to hunt down silverware and napkins because there were never enough for everyone. It's almost as if they weren't expecting us to want food.
If this were a place that just served appetizers and cocktails, it would have been amazing. The cabana is perfect for that. However, the next time I want to try the food, I'm going with one other person and sitting at a table. While they'll tell you they're great for large groups, the main problem was that they really weren't equipped to handle a party of 20.
Beautiful decor and good food! The place is really trendy and would be a great place for a date. Stopped in for lunch late one afternoon - quiet and not many people. The service was friendly and the food was tasty. I recommend the PBC and the Pibil tacos. The Teatro was meh - not very flavorful. The mole was also just ok, but I am very picky about my mole. Definitely lots to choose from on the menu - would stop by if I'm in the area again to try some of the other things.
Review Source:TL;DR version: the tacos were bursting with flavor, trendy/modern decor, excellent service.
I think that's all there is to say, really. And the guac was really good (almost as good as my homemade version, and you can get it "hot"). We ordered the pork, calamari, Teatro DF, and the shrimp. Â The pork one was a bit salty. Â But all in all, there was yummy in my tummy.
My boyfriend and I went here for lunch the other day because he bought one of the vouchers from Living Social. Â The outside looked pretty plain because it was just painted white and had the name of the restaurant on it. Â The interior looked pretty nice though and had comfy seating.
The food was excellent. Â I had the salmon and he had 3 different types of tacos. Â We had a hard time understanding our server because of her thick accent and service was pretty slow but the food was good enough to go back.
Funny but i did not have high expectations for this strip mall mexican restaurant! Â Boy was I wrong! Â Hubby and I went last night sat at the bar... Â The interior is cool - would be a fun date night - girls night out - etc! Â Sampled the guacamole and it was awesome - then had several different tacos - YUM!!!! Â Alison the bartender let us sample their "House Margarita" WOW - one of the best I have ever had! Â Everything is organic - no bottled sour mix - the real deal - the best part - only $8.00.... Â Service is great! Â Can't wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review Source:When I walked in and saw the sleek atmosphere, I thought Moderna would be pricey. I was wrong. The menu had a lot of tasty-sounding items, and I went for a vegetable quesadilla. I don't usually like Mexican food because I find it greasy, at Moderna, the food tasted fresh, and it was well prepared. No pools of grease. It also was reasonable. Without drinks, it came to under $10 a person. The only aspect I didn't like was the service. It was friendly, but after we got our food, our server disappeared. She didn't refill our drinks until we finally flagged her down. It was a European type of service where the servers give you your food and then leave you alone.
All in all, it was a great experience with delicious food and reasonable prices. I plan on going back.
Since a scoutmob was offered and my lovely work folk raved I decided to give Moderna a try. I can't visit places on work gossip alone because my co's don't quite know what they are talking about when it comes to food. They still weren't on key with this place either. All they have done lately is rave about how fabulous the tacos were. Â Well, not really or at least that wasn't my take. Â I ordered the shrimp taco and the calamari taco. Â Neither of them were all that good. Â I should also say that I am not really a fan of flour tortillas so that didn't help things. The issue I had with the calamari taco was that the sauce that topped it was too sweet and cloying. Â I couldn't get any true squidy taste and I love some squid. Â The shrimp taco was better, but not by much. Â The shrimp was overcooked and there were only a few that made it in my taco. Â The saving grace of the meal was the moderna salad with salsa ranch dressing. The $7 medium large salad comes with black beans, lettuce, roasted corn, pepitas, cukes, tomatoes, radishes, avocado, and perhaps my most favorite ingredient, masa croutons. Â The masa croutons need to become an app because they are awesome little cubes of fried masa goodness. Â You can also get fried tofu added for no extra charge. Â The $7 price tag doesn't look so bad when you add that in. I think it's $2 or $3 extra if you want chicken or shrimp added. Â This salad was awesome. Â I've already been planning another trip just for the salad. I should add that the slightly spicy ranch dressing is the final push in the star rating. I don't love salad dressings, especially not ranch (I'm a bad southerner, I know), but this shit is funnel-it good.
To summarize the long winded column above: get the salad, make sure you order the fried tofu with it (despite the calorie count of the final dish), and drizzle spicy ranch on top. Â You can't go wrong with this combo.
This place just opened around the corner from Kungfu's place. We passed by it a few times and I dismissed it saying it looks too much like a Miami bar to serve me a real taco. The incentive that cinched our visit was a Scoutmob deal that popped up. I'm glad to report that this super ultra sleek looking place also serves super awesome food.
It's located in a strip mall out in Sandy Springs, about three to four miles down from Nori Nori. They have a great selection of tequila, a great looking interior, and a great lighting and sound system that parallels any nightclub in town. There was a birthday party being held there that night so the atmosphere was much more club like than a restaurant. I ordered a tlacoyo, a paloma, and a chicken mole for myself and Kungfu ordered a Teatro DF taco and a Jewban sandwich. He says that he would've ordered carnitas if he saw them on the menu but the lights and the club atmosphere distracted him and he just wanted to eat and get out. I know, he sounds like a cranky grandpa at times but he's a grumpy old soul when he's hungry.
We received our Teatro DF first and at the first bite, Teatro DF became the best gourmet steak taco to me in Atlanta. The steak was so tender and so juicy. I also expected we'd get a small taco but this taco was pretty huge. The size of two to three tacos put together and filled to the brim with glorious, mouth-watering  steak. I think next time we're here, we're just going to order a ton of tacos just to try them out.
Next we got our tlacoyo, a corn cake that's cooked just like a polenta with salsa verde topped with panela and chihuahua cheese and shrimp. We mowed this dish down as well. I loved how the warm corn cake melted the chihuahua cheese just so and the salsa verde cooled the corn cake so you wouldn't burn your mouth. The shrimp was done to a perfection and added a nice contrast of texture within the entire dish. I love this dish. I love it. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting.
Next our sandwich and our chicken mole came out. Not a lot of places around town do mole. The chicken mole was literally half a chicken served to you on a bed of Spanish rice and a bed of salad next to it. The juicy chicken is dotted with panela cheese on top of its mole covered glory. The chicken is smoky with a hint of sweetness with a little bit of magical je ne sais quoi. I never like Spanish rice at any Mexican joint and Moderna's Spanish rice? I could probably just eat just the rice and be happy. It's that good. It reminds me more of rice from arroz con pollo dish and it's very well made. It's 1am and I'm making myself really hungry thinking about it.
The Jewban wasn't bad but we both weren't really a fan of it. The ropa vieja was a bit too salty and the bread wasn't sweet enough to counter the saltiness. The meat though, good lord, the man knows how to cook his meats. All of them are just cooked to perfection, never tough, never dry, and they're all freaking juicy.
My paloma was good, but then again, I've never had a bad paloma in recent memory.
Is this a place I'd recommend people to come OTP for? Heck yes. It's hip enough to eat and drink and then to go party downtown or just to stay and party OTP. Their food is more than spot on and their bar is very well stocked with a great assortment of tequilas and cachacas! I'm actually thinking about having my birthday party here this year as the food is more than fairly priced and they have a great selection of tequilas. What more could a tequila lush ask for?
Living in east cobb, you don't get to see a whole lot of in town quality dining with any versatility and that has long been a big pet peeve of mine regarding suburban living. Â That being said, after visiting Moderna on a friend's recommendation this past weekend, I was pleasantly surprised. Â Lately I've grown fond of craft cocktails which the selection at Moderna beyond satisfied my nightly dosage needs. Â Wish I would've been able to sit outside to enjoy the patio but the weather was a little cold that evening. Â As for the food, I would have to rate it as one of my top five experiences in Atlanta as far as mexican food is concerned, and being originally from California, that's more than impressive.
Review Source:This place is GREAT!! Nothing like this around this area and definitley worth the drive if you have to travel a little to get here. Defintiely Miami-ish. I am from Miami and all of the ambiance was exactly what I like. The food was GREAT, and the service was exceptional. We sat at the bar and we were served by Josh who is one of the partners. He was friendly and accomadating and encouraged us to look around. They have a nice semi-private area for private parties which I definitely will use for out of town family and friends. LIke I said, food was GREAT, drinks were great..overall it was a very good experience and we will definitely be back. This place is definitley worth a try..I am sure that you will be a fan and defintely a repeat customer. GREAT SPOT!!!!!
Review Source:Finally, quality mexican at a reasonable price! Specialty drinks are also outstanding. They have 3 choices of tortillas for your tacos (Flour, Corn, Wheat). The calamari is a MUST. We got 2 drinks a piece, an appetizer and 2 entrees. With tip, still less than $40. The decor is awesome, pretty hard to believe this place used to be a dirty old bar. They completely renovated it - it's got this Miami nightclub type feel. Service was great, food was even better. Only downside, it's way up near Roswell. Love this place!
Review Source:Just had lunch at Moderna and have to report this will become a favorite! Food was great, fresh and clean tasting. Â I had the blackened salmon with Mexican rice and a healthy spinach, grape tomatoes and mushroom side. Salmon was perfect (I asked for rare), both in seasonning and in cooking - it melted in the mouth. Friends I was with enjoyed their meal just as much (veretarian enchiladas and fish tacos). We shared a gigantic piece of dulce de leche cake with fresh straberries on top. Mmmh Delish! Â The place is very cool looking; this is more of a bar later at night with live music on a small stage and they have a private dining room behind the bar that can accomodate 16 people around a communal table with a little stream in the middle and cool lighting. Also to note, priced just right for the quality, the area and for lunch (I think the same menu applies at night, making it a great place at all time).
Review Source:Miami meets Mexico with Moderna, a sexy new taco restaurant with head chef Ignacio Barq. Ignacio was head chef at popular Red Pepper Taqueria off of Briarcliff. His new restaurant is great and priced so well I am already planning my next fallow up.
We started the dinner with Moyetes which is Mexican bread with refried beans,Chorizo, cheese and salsa Borracha. It was amazing, and I would definitely order it again. The Moyetes was soft, and flavorful with just the right amount of spice. I then ordered the carne asada taco, the brisket taco, and the pibil ( pork) taco. They were all amazing and very authentic in the preparation. I would say that everyone of them was spectacular...Prices range between 12-4 dollars on the menu. Â I am salivating just thinking about the tacos.
The place is posh great for a date. I am glad there is finally a descent restaurant on that part of Roswell rd.
