I like Jim N Nicks and Dreamlands better.. way better.
Mediocre flavor and meager servings for the meat and sides. This biggest factor in this rating is the serving size.
Not a big fan of the sides either.. baked beans, cole slaw, etc. I usually like it, but it was just too plain tasting to me.
I thought Moe's was pretty good. Â Clearly there are TONS of BBQ places in Birmingham but this is the only one I've made it to thus far. Â I'll continue my quest in finding good...no GREAT bbq here in the "Ham".
Now I must say...I cheated a little bit on this. Â I didn't actually get bbq. Â I got the smoked wings (I was craving them once I saw them on the menu). Â Sooo I technically didn't have their "bbq" yet.
The wings however were pretty good. Â Very meaty, great flavor. Â My only negative was that I didn't actually get any "smoked" flavor to them. Â They tasted more like hot wings. Â Still tasty...just not smoked.
The server suggested I try the collards, which I am usually extremely hesistant about but I tried them anywayz. Â They were actually pretty good. Â The cornbread that came along with my meal really compliment the greens well. Â
The mac n cheese....I'll pass on next time. Â I've found it hard to find a really good southern, cheesy mac and cheese at restaurants. Â This one was blah. Â Dry and not enough cheese. Â
My meal wasn't expensive though. 10 wings, 2 sides and a drink for about $10. Not bad. Â Leave it me to return home to ATL to discover they have a location there as well. Â I will return...next time...I'll try the bbq.
The BBQ is top notch. Th food is prepared on site. There are some menu items that may be overlooked in this dandy BBQ joint. The wings are the very best I have ever had. They fall off of the bone and melt in your mouth. Smoked wings are the only way to go. The BBQ chicken sandwich is a treat. Your mouth is hosting a party and you better invite the chicken sandwich. My favorite "change up" is the Fried shrimp sandwich. Ahh Lawd! It is soooo delicious that I'm not going to 'splain it because it can't be 'splained. Just do it. You can thank me later. The only way to compliment these delicious items is with Moe's homemade sides. Greens, sweet potato casserole, squash casserole, butter beans, and of course your cole slaw and baked beans and mac n' cheese. The sides that are offered change every day or so. All is prepared in their kitchen and fresher than Will Smith. The home made desserts will actually make you cry a little bit. They offer cold beer too. Picnic tables and decent size TV on the wall. Note: fried shrimp sandy with squash casserole and collard greens washed down with an Arnold Palmer is a home freakin' run! Go now!
Review Source:Great BBQ. Â Probably the best in town. Â It is strange because every time I go in this place it is nothing but men. Â It seems like they need a sign that says, "For men only". Â They have wonderful food, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Â My only problem is that their seating has a bit left to be desired. Â It's all picnic tables. Â As a lady, I like to be delicate and beautiful. Â When I go to sit down at this place I have to stretch my legs just to sit down. Â I am sure I look like a weirdo every time I try to sit at these manly picnic tables. In the past they had booths and tables. Â Now, it's only picnic tables. Â Â : Â (
FYI: Â Don't wear a skirt to this place unless you want everyone seeing your lady business.
Moe's is an exception exception to franchised operations. I was skeptical that a franchised BBQ place would be good, much less great. But I had heard good things about Moe's Original and decided to give it a try today. The first thing I noticed is that Moe's doesn't look to replicate the exact same atmosphere in each location. The Rocky Ridge location has a rough, local feel. The space feels like it has been a BBQ joint forever and still has remnants of the original C-store and garage from the 60's. I think it is important that it feels authentic -- not like so many rough-by-design places that seem to try too hard and miss the boat.
The menu is simple. Pulled pork, turkey, chicken, and ribs with good southern sides. The pork was tender with a tangy tomato and vinegar sauce. I don't think the pork is quite up to Saw's standards, but darn close. The skillet corn was hot and spicy. Flavorful collard greens and homeade mac and cheese. I chased it down with some Banana pudding. It lacked actual banana, but featured a nice hint of cinnamon which I enjoyed.
A great meal.
Red neck nachos- amazing
Ribs- also great (my 9 month old niece ate a whole one herself in tiny bites)
Beer- great selection
Atmosphere- a little dark on the inside, you can sit outside though if you can stand the heat
Sides- meh
Would definitely go back again for the red neck nachos!
Moe's is the kind of place you want to build in your backyard and have at your fingertips when the need for BBQ overwhelms your body. This very unassuming restaurant is an Alabama staple and though its a local chain, the quality of food shines.
We rolled to Moe's in a gang of 8 on a recommendation from a local and pretty much tried everything on the menu.
The lowdown:
Ribs- Amazing! Very different though. Almost as if they boiled the rib, broiled it and then smoked it. It tasted like a sausage rib, very mild smokey flavor, but so tender. I am excited just thinking about it.
Pulled Pork- Very tender and juicy, was told it was like cotton candy that melted in your mouth.
Chicken- Not amazing but very good, smoked chicken.
Our resident vegetarian had the Shrimp sandwich; I know a veg at a BBQ spot is like a fish out of water, but she loved it. Skrimpalicious.
Banana Puddin: Thick and delicious, I could taste the entire south in each spoonful.
A side note: Moe's is not your typical Alabama white BBQ and has more of a vinegar based sauce. Still amazing! Give Moe's a chance if you are in the area. You will enter hungry and leave satisfied and not stuffed like some BBQ restaurants play it.
Oh and I think have live music some nights, check it out
So mouth watering good that just seeing the word Moe's gets my mouth watering in a very Pavlovian way. Â Aside from their incredible barbecue and outstanding sides, I can't tell you how much I love their signature sauce. Â And now it comes bottled! Â Okay, so it's a plastic squeeze bottle but you know what I mean! Â I just cracked it open today and it tastes every bit as good as the sauce served on the premises!
And for those who aren't watching their weight, there's another sauce you can order on the side but I have no idea what it's called...kind of reminiscent of Thousand Island and even though its probably triple the fat content, it's so worth it because it's just as tasty as its signature cue sauce counterpart! Â
Love, love, love this joint! Â In fact, right before I was slated to fly out, I was going to stop in for some cue to go and pack it in my suitcase! Â I've no doubt though that TSA would find some reason to confiscate it!
Was really looking forward to some really good BBQ this labor day weekend. But was very disappointed with Moe's. I took my wife, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter there for lunch. Three of us got the pulled pork sandwich special and all agreed it was very greasy and fatty. I was the only one who actually finished it. I was that hungry ! Sides were very average. baked beans were good, but potato salad was so-so. Again two people didn't eat theirs. Spent $45 bucks and wished I had gone anywhere else. PS. I know good BBQ. Raised in Kansas City, lived in Texas before moving to Birmingham many years ago.
