I had a great experience at the Moon Dog Tavern. I was meeting people here for trivia on a Tuesday, and my first impression when I walked in was: why are there so many people dressed well in here? Judging by this, I think many business people come here after work for drinks and dinner as it is near the Keystone business district. The trivia was fun, challenging, and the prizes were decent for bar trivia. It was a little hard to hear the trivia DJ overall all the talking, but we managed. Trivia starts at 7:30 and lasts for a few hours.
The food and drinks were all great. Our group ordered a Margarita pizza, which was large and delicious. It's made with a garlic crust, mozzarella cheese, and fresh Roma tomatoes, alongside sprinkles of basil. I highly recommend ordering pizza if you come here with a large group and are looking for something big to share. A few members also ordered the chicken ranch roll-up that came with potato chips, and some other various appetizers (which are half-off on Tuesday evenings). The drinks were great, too. I ordered a pitcher of their Four Horsemen Irish Red, which was around $6, and some specialty shots from the bar. The specialty shots are sort of expensive, but they taste amazing. It depends on whether you're going for a drunk evening or a this-tastes-good evening.
The Moon Dog is an underdog, but rising contender on my A-list, and how!
At first glance, the place isn't much more than your typical Midwest pub. And let's be honest...it is. BUT -- it's got several marks in the "win" column that earn it the extra star and, most important, my repeat business.
1) Great specials!
In a world where eating/dining out regularly gets f***ing expensive fast, it's nice to have a break once in a while. I typically go on Mondays, where they have $3.00 pints and $6.00 sandwiches...with a soda included!
2) Above-average fare
I've had a couple of REALLY good meals here. And while I've had one or two that I regretted, I liked my first meal enough to want to branch out and explore the menu.
3) Nice staff
I can mostly only speak for the bartenders, but they're pretty cool. I got a GREAT food recommendation my last visit, plus the guy actually knew his beer pretty well.
4) Free WiFi
I admit it: I drink and surf. And why not?? Here, you can -- to your heart's content.
All in all -- I'm not sure I'd say this place is a destination, but if you're anywhere in the 96th St. area and looking for some food or a libation, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
There is nothing special about Moon Dog...but there is nothing bad about it. I do like that there is a good draught selection. I have not had the pizza in a long time, but I remember that it was quite tasty. They do not have a shortage of fried bar food. I am not wild about it being on 96th st which worries me because I do not live close and there are always Carmel cops lurching...so I have to be extra responsible.
If you live close I would give it a shot. They also have quite a few televisions, so if you are looking for sports, you can usually find it. There is also outdoor seating in the warmer months. Oh, and I think there is a music venue attached....but I have never been in there. I only hear the sounds when I visit the RR.
I think they built this place as a prison for people who have given up on wanting anything exceptional in their life.
I was lured in by the promise of trivia night. It took over 2 hours to ask 12 questions because they played entire songs between each question. The ringmaster didn't know the first thing about running a PA or public speaking. There was no quality control for using cell phones to answer questions.
The food was nothing more than typical Midwest pub fair. The only silver lining was the specials: $7 pitchers of Bell's Two Hearted, half price appetizers and $4.95 burger and fries. Thank goodness for Bell's!
I kept driving by this place and curiousity has drawn me in. I must say that the bar area is huge, lots of tvs and buzztime trivia! All pluses in my book. But lets get to the food. I had toasted ravioli for an appetizer and chicken lambabas for dinner. The ravoli was yummy toasty goodness. The salsa had the right kick and enough of it to share around. The chicken lambabas came with fries. The fries where freshly cut and awesome. The chicken reminded me of a quesadilla and it was very filling and cheesy. My only complaint was that no sauce was included to dip the chicken in. Next time I'll have to get some ranch. All in all a very fun place and great food!
Review Source:I have been to Moon Dog several times for a drink and have thought it was an okay place. Â I recall having a decent meal there the last few times I've been, but I think I was super hungry and not too discriminatory. Â It was pizza and I remember it being very good.
Today we decided to go for Sunday lunch. Â I don't think I'll ever make that mistake again. Â We started with just some chips and queso for an appetizer. Â The queso was very good, but the chips were stale. Â For lunch, my boyfriend had the buffalo chicken sandwich. Â It basically was a breaded piece of chicken with some Frank's hot sauce on it. Â Okay for bar food. Â My meal was the problem. Â The fries were extremely burnt and the hamburger was burnt on the outside as well. Â I don't mind a little charcoal but this was the taste of a burnt, old dirty grill. Â I could only eat half of the burger and about 5 fries. Â Needless to say, I won't be getting the burger again. Â Well, that's if I'm in such a state to have to get food from here again.
The one thing I will say is that we had a very nice server who worked hard to make our visit a good one. Â I wish I could write a better review as I live very close to this bar and believe in building a strong neighborhood, but with so many other great restaurants in the area (and even bar/restaurants), I can't justify it. Â Maybe you'll have a better experience than me.
I have been to the Moon Dog Tavern several times to eat, see live music, and watch NHL Center Ice games.
Location: Â This is a large tavern on the northeast side of Indianapolis, located next to a rock quarry and across from several car dealerships. Â It's a strip mall, neighborhood pub. Â The rush hour traffic is busy in this part of the city so I would be hesitant to get an after work beer.
Food/Beer: The food is typical pub food but tastes very good and is a little pricey. Â The beer selection is above average and typically see Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Newcastle Brown, and Sam Adams.
Clientele: Â This pub is usually fairly busy but the clientele typically keeps to themselves and don't mingle. Â The pub has a karaoke night on Sundays in front of a live band.
Overall: 3.5 stars.
It's a party, sometimes. Â Rock band Blond Sonja (LOL) playing loud in the parking lot. Â Ninety-two cent PBR i the can. Â One needs an occasional PBR in order to refresh the lowt end benchmark of the tasting spectrum. Â Comfy plastic stack chairs outside. Â There's mid-grade beer samplings on Friday nights, presumably to try to upgrade the client base from Coors Lite to something carrying more margin. Â Tonight it was Newcastle. Â The sample servers were far more interesting than the beer. Â If you wander inside, pack an O2 tank and goggles. Â They like their smokes here. Â The band starts playing at 8 and the big, older crowd start to thin out at bout 930.
Review Source:Moon Dog Tavern is a great place to grab a drink after work or even on a weeknd night if you're not looking for a Broad-Ripple type scene. Â Theyve got a respectable beer selection and always have daily special on beer and alcohol. Â The food is so-so at best, your typical american fare like burgers, sandwiches, appetizers, etc. Â Nothing to write home about but the type of food that goes well with excessive beer drinking. Â
There is a great outdoor patio that is perfect for wasting a night away with friends on a summer day. Â If youd like there is also a live music aspect on weekends in a separate part of the bar. Â There are TV monitors where you can play trivia games, poker, and a bunch of other games while you hang out which is pretty fun.
I have been here a few times now and have always had very pleasant service. Â The food is some of the best bar food I have ever had. Â My only complaint was I ordered the same burger I do everywhere I go- Bacon, Blu Cheese, & Ketchup. Â I got Cheddar, the server tried to say I never said Blue Cheese, but everyone else at the table heard me say it, so she took it back and got me the right order. Once it did arrive I really enjoyed my meal, and wasn't badly priced at all.
Review Source:They have smoking and NTN trivia, two things that make the food taste better and the experience more fun!
We've been three times, and yes ID'd each time! I always get a Shrimp Salad and my friends have had sandwiches or wraps of some sort. Only been there at really off hours, like 2-4, so didn't see too much action.
I've only been here for lunch or a beer after work.
The lunch menu is pretty good. Â The white stromboli is great and most of the sandwiches are good. Â The atmosphere is what's keeping me from giving it another star. Â There is usually a hostess that has an attitude problem, but the wait staff evens it out. Â So many TV's on the wall make you think it's a sports bar, but it's not. Â I find it to be distracting inside and it feels kind of sterile. Â I tend to lean toward homier places, more of a hole in the wall if you will. Â This place isn't what I usually look for in an after work beer place.
