Mutt Lynch's is one of the best day drinking spots in Newport Beach. It's a pretty cool place to go on a Saturday or Sunday during the day. It gets super packed!
There are a few pool tables which is fun, but the environment is awesome...especially in the summer.
Really the only thing I can't stand about the place is that the bouncers are dicks sometimes. They're pretty rude at the door most of the time.
Carve your name in the table! Eat breakfast--the most important meal of the day here. Loud, seat yourself, OK to wear very little here & while it's day light OK to bring kiddo here (but bring your own entertainment like playdough or crayons). Bathroom tiny upstairs--kiddo potty trained thank goodness.
Breakfast Food excellent and huge plates. (I've only eaten breakfast items here). Service good. Drinks-- stick to the beers. Location-right on the "walk" so you can people watch. When it's around evening, ID is checked at the door by a big guy who's actually nice and seems amused by the tourists. Pay your metered parking or ride your bike like me. Been eating drinking and  merry-ing here for 9 years. Witty sayings on the sign thing on the building-- although their poetry been more somber these last 2 years-- must be the recession.
Upstairs is a more "sporty" bar/ local/ sundried tomato area. I usually stay by the windows "downstairs," my buddy is the local, not me.
Calling all men! : face the window while you're munching on your nachos and chugging that beer ! You won't be disappointed !
I'm definitely coming back here for my birthday!
The "mucho nachos" were HUGE, and the "Southwest eggrolls" were mouthwatering! Those two wont disappoint you, nor the beer, nor the view.
It's great for groups but just remember the 18% gratuity that is added for groups of 6 or more (a reminder so you tell your group what to expect.)
PLUS- THE BEACH IS RIGHT THERE ! What else could you want more?
My review is on breakfast. The good thing about this place is the portions are ample enough to feed a lumberjack, the bad thing is the food is bland and the drinks have more ice in them than flavor. The Bloody Mary tasted like ice and vodka with a splash of ketchup.
The ambiance was pretty cool. We got the window seat, perfect for people watching. I had this triple meat dish that had english muffins. Wouldn't recommend it again.
Their trivia night is so much fun if you are with a big group!!! I went with my coworkers. It was great! The waitress gave us a free round of tequila shots!! The food was not that great but there is so much more about the place than the food that makes up for it. It's a good place to be with a group!
Review Source:I wanted to give it four stars but sadly only three....
the food is okay.....typical bar food. Â Wasn't a fan of the buffalo wings (petrodactyle wings) and the nachos were just okay.
Lets be honest, the best part of this joint is the schooners, many TV's for football and the local vibe....
I hear the brunch is good....
Well, I gotta tell a little of the story of how I found this place.... Â After I moved to Vegas, I won 2 tickets to Calif Disney. Â I had never been to California in my life and had a mutual "Michigander" visit me in Vegas---road-trip! Â
We made it to Calif Disney and had a good time, but wanted to dip our toes in the Pacific Ocean....so off we went to find a beach.  This was before GPS....a little map assistance and we made it to a beach in Newport Beach.  We had planned to dip our toes, get sand in our shoes...then make the 4+hr trip back to Vegas.  On our way back to the car, we decided we needed some food and looked just past the beach parking lot and discovered Mutt Lynch.  I really can't even tell you if the food was good, the oceanfront view was all we cared about as we gulped  beer from our heavy goblets.  Most of the seats face the beach/ocean and it was a beautiful sunset.  After a couple beers, I decided driving was obviously out of the question and we actually wandered next door to the charming Portofino hotel (not sure if's still there, but VERY convenient). Â
I brought 2 good friends there a few years later and we had just as good a time.  It's not fancy...just a great place to watch beach goers and the California sunsets.
I went there this past weekend....a lot more crowded and because of all the people, I couldn't see the ocean, but I will ALWAYS come here if I am ever in the area.
On a Sunday afternoon, my friend and I decided to get out of the bad ol' Inland Expired rut and hang out in Newport Beach and when it was time to get some grub, we were just walking along the oceanfront establishments for an appetizing place to eat. Mutt Lynch's somehow caught my attention. It had a pretty cool punk rock vibe and looked safe enough for anyone to come in. (Yep, I saw some kiddos dining there with family). Sure, it's not exactly a swanky-looking joint, but hey, whaddaya expect from a dive bar? :) But we decided to keep on looking some more and nothing really appealed to me, so we ended up going back to pick Mutt Lynch's. Wise choice. (A big fat pat on the back for us. :D)
There was nothing seedy about this place, and it was right across the beach. Definitely no complaints! :) Plus we were thinking about a mom-and-pop place anyway, steering clear from the typical cookie-cutter corporate chain. (As someone who runs a small biz, I support mom-and-pops--better service, better or unique selections, etc.)
I got the buffalo chicken wrap. The chicken itself was pretty yummy, but I've never cared too much for carrots and celeries (and yes, the latter has always made me puke for some reason). So I ended up eating only half of the portion and I was still hungry. Oops, I should've gone for my original plan (the turkey Reuben sandwich), another sandwich, the Al Gore burger, or one of the burritos. But oh, well. :) My friend joked that it was bad luck or "punishment" for not going for the veggie pizza she got. :) (In fact, we were told that originally Mutt Lynch's were/are known for their pizza specialty.) And it was awesome from what she described it.
Now on to the drinks. But let me say this first:
WARNING: the schooners are INSTANT DUI waiting to happen. :)
No kidding. My friend and I ordered just a standard-size mixed "light" drink. (Yes, supposedly "light" like most other mixed drinks. Or so we thought!) I think it was called the Daze or something like that. Well, it definitely lived up to its name. In just a few sips, we got buzzed and before I knew it, I was really lightheaded and I had to force myself to talk. We almost lost our bearings. We were still definitely conscious, but (almost) dazed and (almost) confused. LOL. Glad I wasn't the driver that day. :) I could only imagine what would happen if I downed a whole schooner.
Our server (I believe her name was Jen?) was super-friendly and attentive. When my order came late (my friend's pizza order came al and it normally took longer to bake pizza!), she made sure that it came through. She gave helpful hints and history on the menu. (Yes, she confirmed that the strong stuff was indeed in the drinks!!! So I wasn't hallucinating at all. LOL!)
Sure enough, there were more friendly customers, a bunch of guys, striking a convo with me. (Must be the typical sunny SoCal thang!) If I were single, I'd definitely eat up that opportunity. LOL.
As for my friend, she actually brought her mom (not exactly the partying and drinking type :D) last weekend and mom seemed to approve. :) It's pretty pricey (as I prefer AYCE/buffet stuff for the best value), but the atmosphere and the location justify it. So we're definitely coming back the next time we hit up the beach.
HANG TEN, dudes and dudettes! :)
You can get a beer and a big breakfast at 7am. Â Make that a BIG BEER in a schooner glass! Â I like the pork belly with eggs and potatoes. Â And then burn it off by walking the pier. Â The seating is really casual--picnic benches with graffiti everywhere.
Â
Just be careful that your meter is paid up. Â The meter maid will literally wait next to your meter, watch it count down, and then give you a ticket with no mercy.
This place...is a must visit. Food is pretty good. Right on the beach so if you are a local you already know where it's at!
Am breakfast is good!!!
Food awesome
Service is rad especially if you ask for Meg:)
She knows her stuff and loves kids.
Want a local vibe...let her tune you in to what's hap in the area. Way rad.
Yep...we come here again and again for good food good vibe and waves...
Anything better?? Hehe ...nope.
Thanks Meg, see ya tomorrow.
Ultimate OC sunday funday spot. Â The ocean breeze sand and waves. Crowd is a mixed 20 something and older.
Mutts is pretty relaxing and rarely feels like too much of a scene to deal with. Â People are nicer here, and not so lame newps bro style as most other places on the peninsula.
I like the fact that they offer schooners, but schooners get warm, so ehhh, not my thing.
Breakfast is good! Â They have this bomb breakfast burrito with cream cheese, yum!
Good food, good beer, fun vibe! Made friends with employees right away! Major  grease pocket, but something to please almost everyone. I can not review what vegetarian options were offered at the time, but I think they would include onion rings as an option. It's just a greasey spoon serving HUGE beers. It was loud as hell and it was hard to find a seat, but it was a holiday weekend. Had fun before exploring elsewhere
Review Source:You have to be aware that this is a different kind of bar than what's offered a block down the road. Its a beach bar, not a city bar to get down and party hard. If you're looking for a place of that caliber, steer clear of Mutt's. Now, if you want a laid back, ambient lit bar, than Mutt's is the place, the music is loud and sporadic at times in terms of genre, and they have a bit of variety on tap for beers. My buddies and I started the night off there before bar hopping elsewhere, and it made for a chill ease into the night. It's not as hectic, again not meaning to draw that kind of crowd at Mutt's, and it wasn't so packed which was nice.
Though, there was an odor of wet dog...
This place was pretty off the hook. However, I don't recommend it if you're looking to be wined and dined. The servers are more like your friends rather than people waiting on you, but I like that. Everyone that works there is super laid back and chill. The waitress knew the menu and beers well enough to explain what they were like. The scooners are HUGE and the food (especially the onion rings and any type of pizza) was delicious. I will be back soon. :)
Review Source:This is what a beach bar is and should be. Here's why:
- Always a good crowd: Whether you drop in for a glass of beer in early afternoon or late evening, this bar is always busy. Love the music and vibe here!
- Set up: I love the open, laid-back set up. You got the usual bar seating, open tables in the center for larger groups, and the window seating for the smaller groups.
- Location, Location: With a beachfront, Mutt Lynch's holds one of the best location on the boardwalk of Newport Pier. Perfect for a refreshing post-surf break!
Great sized beers, that's how I will start this. Only thing that really downgraded my rating was the fact on a Saturday night they called last call at 12am. I don't know a lot of people that are ready to close up and call it a night that early but I digress. The selection of beer is pretty awesome. However we were poked fun at for wearing our old school ducks jersey but its all in good fun.
Review Source:I love Mutt Lynch's!
Everything about this place made me feel cool upon entering. The large, high top tables were extra roomy and comfortable to sit in. They kind of went along with our large, extra roomy glasses of beer (see pics).
I got the southwest salad-best salad I've probably had. Since I've been back from vacation I've tried to replicate it at home. Can't do it. Spicy, but not too much so. My friend ordered the California burger, they serve it on bread, but good bread. I should have read what kind of bread they use. It was good. Did I say it was good? Buttery. MMmmm.
Our server was lovely and if we didn't have things to explore, we could have stayed and had a good time with the crowd all day with our large beers.
Adventuring out in the Newport Beach area as a new resident of the area I stumbled upon Mutt Lynch's. We went into the place to grab a few drinks and relax and was welcomed by the friendly bouncer and bartender right away. The beer selection here is great and the size glasses you can choose from are quite the filler.
I didn't get the pleasure to eat any of the food here but it smelled and looked good from what I saw on people's plates and would like to come back and try it sometime soon. I will update my review when the time comes.
Pool table and Juke Box were ours for the duration of being there which was a fun time and helped the experience of just sitting at the bar drinking and just talking. The Juke Box had a large variety, and if my memory serves me right it's one of those that are connected to the internet and can get pretty much any song you want (within reason i'm sure)
Stop by and check it out for yourself, I was happy relaxing and spending some quality time. My experience is based on an off bar night (Tuesday). I can't vouch for the busy nights but i'm sure they're just as pleasant, just a little bit more packed.
The burgers are amazing. Â On Wednesday they do buy one get one free burgers. Â They are huge portions. On top of that, you can add fries for another $2. If you're not there trying to pick up on members of the opposite sex, the garlic fries with garlic mayo is excellent. Â They also have trivia on wednesday nights. Â We've always had a good time. Â It's always packed on trivia night. Â
WARNING: I do notice that their waitresses have some attitude issues. Â We had the WORST attitude from a waitress ever. Â After a group of 8 of us put in our money for the bill, we handed it to her. Â She asked if we wanted change. Â We said yes since none of us had smaller bills. Â She gave us the worst attitude. Â (Our bill was right around 80$. Â I'm sure she would have wanted a bit more than the change from the money we gave her.) Â My friend tried asking if she was having a rough day. Â She blew him off completely. Â We still left her $20 because apparently she needs it way more than we do.
Other than, love the bar. Â If you're not ordering food, definitely just get your drinks at the bar. Â The bartenders are a lot nicer.
My Wifey and I had a TON of fun at this place. It is definitely not for kids.
We stumbled upon this lively establishment while walking around Newport Pier. We were wondering where all the hoppin bars were and we sure knew we'd found our spot when we walked by this place.
The music was bumpin and the place was crammed with good lookin So-Cal folks from 20's to 30's. My smokin hot Wifey fit right in.
We squeezed and and happened to find two spots at the bar which I think was some kind of miracle.
The beers are HUGE 32 oz schooners and for $9 bucks it was a good price for blue moon.
As I said, the place was packed and it was awesome to finally watch a bartender be busy, kick ASS, and smile and joke with his customers all at the same time.
Music was also great, they would switch from Biggie to spice girls and then back to Tu-Pac. Â Everyone was definitely enjoying themselves, including us.
We were hungry so asked the bartender for a recommend. One of the items was the Mahi Burrito. To say it bluntly, IT WAS F-KIN GREAT. Basically a fish taco rolled in a burrito with red sauce on top. Huge portion also. I shared and was content.
There is no way, ever ever ever, that I will be in Newport and not stop in this cool spot.
I don't even know what to say about this place. More fratty than a frat-house? I came here around 9pm on a Saturday and it was already packed. It was very loud and people were very drunk. The floor was sticky and grafitti was carved into the tables.
The bar only had beer or vodka drinks. The selection of tap beer was good, but I couldn't think of many vodka drinks. The drinks were decently priced...2 "small" beers and 2 dirty shirleys for $24.
If you are into a big party scene, on a budget, and don't care about cleanliness this might be your place though...It's on the beach which is nice.
Checked out Wednesdays Trivia Night. Try it you will like it, and if you don't order the 2 for 1 burger Wednesday special and you won't have much to complain about.
...Unless you are me. I saved my appetite for Mutt's all day and was pretty ravenous by the time we ordered. This may not be very significant to meat eaters, but the menu says they serve "black bean Garden Burgers" however it was a regular Garden Burger (made of a veggie, rice and mushroom mash). It was a bummer, but if I sent it back there is no telling what kind of violent episode would have taken place if my blood sugar dropped any lower.
Not the biggest deal, but it but a mild damper on an evening I was looking forward to. I know Waaaah Waaaah Waaaaah.
This place is the end-all be-all of Newport's finest drinking establishments!
Where else can you get schooners, not just of beer but of bloody marys, full-bottle mimosas, and other concoctions? NOWHERE!
Where else can you eat pterodactyl wings?? NOWHERE!!
And where would you rather be at 6 am for the world cup, noon for football, 7 for the Lakeshow, and also midnight to drink the rest of the night away??? NOWHERE!!!
A great local bar with reasonable prices and without all the lines and commotion of some "other" bars. The best day bar in the history of mankind and the best food I have EVER eaten in a bar. Legit place for sports games and drinking at night too. Check it out, and keep it local!
Breakfast review:
If you're looking for a place to drink at 8:30 in the morning, this is your place. Â Sit inside and you can stare at all the people on the beach. Â
I came here for breakfast with my girlfriend and 4 month old. Â Yeah, the four month old was a mistake. Â It truly is a bar. Â I walked in and the smell of alcohol was overwhelming at first. Â It's seat yourself. Â Figured that out after a few minutes. Â The waitresses don't come by that often. Â No wonder the schooners are the thing to order. Â
I got an omelette and my girlfriend got a pancake combo. Â Pretty good sizes for both. Â The salsa was good too. Â Thank god the waitress brought our check near the end. Â
I guess if you are looking for a place where you can drink this is it.
People come to KC for advice. How many schooners to drain at Mutt Lynch's? Should you add Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe" as your ring tone? How do I avoid herpes? When is it the right time to leave a job?
1.) The correct amount of schooners at Mutts is any easy algorithm. One schooner per 37 minutes. Based on a thirst index of 259 to quench, the correct number of schooners in 300 minutes is 7.
2.) Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe" as your ring tone. That is a MUST ring tone in December. Alternate it with the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" and Eek-A-Mouse's "The Night Before Christmas" and you're covered.
3.) Avoiding herpes. She has it and so does he. Wrap up the yule log...like the Waitresses. When you finally have a mate and he inevitably snoops through your medicine cabinet, do you really want him to find your Valtrex prescription? And by the way, shouldn't they call it a subscription? You'll be subscribing til the pubes turn white.
4.) When is it the right time to leave a job? KC has answered this question many times. We all know KC doesn't work because of Dad's trust fund which gives KC plenty of time to figure out life's conundrums. One must do the following: Go to Mutt Lynch's and have 3 schooners. Then order shredded beef nachos and a 4th schooner for yourself and a good friend. While the nachos are cooling and you're gazing out over the Pacific Ocean, ask your friend, "Does your job fulfill you?" Your friend will have one of three answers:
A.) If this person is a crazy glue sniffer, they'll complain about their job which is good because it's what you need to hear.
B.) If the person totally adores their job, you need to make today the last day you hang out because that person is a lunatic.
C.) However, if the person is totally indifferent and says, "Ya know, it pays for the schooners and I find plenty of fulfillment outside of the 9-5," then BOOM. There is your reality.
KC hopes you've found your time at Mutt Lynch's spectacular. Now finish that 7th schooner and hop in a taxi.
I don't get the hype of this place. Â bar food at a bar. Â no dancefloor. Â
it's good if u get an open window view of people walking by
I do like their huge drinks.
other than that..overhyped atmosphere, overpriced food.
service was super super slooooooooooooow
however, it is the best bar to go to on that side of the beach
Pretty standard fair for a bar. Â Great selection of beers - although with that many options, I always like a short description of each brew to assist with ordering. Â For the location, the price is excellent. Â It was dark the whole time I was there, but I imagine there's a great view of the Pacific in the day time.
Great music selection all night. Â In fact, the only minor complaint I had was how loud the music was. Â The tables are large - inviting large groups - but you have to shout to talk to the person across from you, let alone at the other end of the table.
Popped into this bar on a trip to Newport beach. Â You can catch a game, catch a buzz, and catch the sunset from the very same stool in this place. Â
Somewhat of a dive bar, the place was packed and the chalice of beer seemed to be the draw. Â If you're looking to play pool, you better be good because the table is located so that you'll be the center of attention. Â
Had chicken finger sliders and tuna sliders which were just okay. Not sure what their specialty is, but those were not it. Â Decent selection of taps to choose from which always makes me happy. Â
I'd go back, but only after checking out a few other spots on the beach.
If you like beer and a beachy casual "curtains blowing in the breeze" atmosphere, check this spot out.
The food is just OK - your standard bar stuff - but incredibly greasy. I know bar food is known to be greasy, but they take it to another level.
But most people come for the ambiance and the schooners, which are HUGE - check out the picture I posted. And they offer some good beer on tap.
I'd be curious to check out trivia night. And when I do, expect an update!
This review is for the Trivia Night that happens on Wed nights from 8 until about 10pm. Â I'm already a huge fan of Mutt's, and this is simply another reason why you should be coming here (if only to challenge our trivia domination). Â Here's a short list of reasons why Trivia Night is a fantastic idea:
1. Â You can arrive at 7:30-8:00 and be out by 10:30, leaving ample time for sleep and the option to parlay a few beers into an evening or call it a night.
2. Â 2 for 1 burgers. Â We're not just talking regular burgers, but all the burgers on their menu, which is extensive and delicious. Â I recommend the Ooooo La La burger, which has cranberries, melted brie, bacon and a little bit of wonderful mixed in. Â
3. Â Free trivia. Â That's right, you don't have to pay. Â You can win between $10 and $30 bucks off your bar tab if you finish top three, and even though there are no drink specials, it's a steal for trivia, cheap food, a few drinks, and a lot of laughs. Â The MC of this even kills it, keeps things moving, will read your team name every time even if it is deplorable, depraved, and despicable. Â Hell, you even have a chance to win a round of drinks by testing your skills each week with myriad challenges (like paper airplane throwing... I've said too much already). Â
Because there is no limitation on group size, feel free to construct your own super team. Â Just pray that there isn't a category on mid 90's rap lyrics or underwater confectionery, because I have the lock on both of those.
I'm not big on the bar scene anymore. Usually I end the night wondering, "why did I just spend $50 for a few overpriced drinks and boring bar food, when I could have gone out to a kick ass dinner with friends for that price?"
But once in a while you find a little dive bar that is so much fun you don't care. Welcome to Mutt's.
I met a group of friends here on a Wednesday for trivia night and had a blast! The bar is busy with with loads of people that group up on teams to answer questions in 5 or 6 rounds. At the end of the night, the winners get $30 off their bill! 2nd place gets $20 off, and 3rd place gets $10. Our team got 2nd place out of about 12 teams!
Everyone was laughing and having such a good time, interacting with people from other tables, high fiving, etc. No your typical boring bar scene.
Plus, the drink prices are actually decent, and the food was better than I expected for a dive bar. In fact, on Wednesdays they have 2 for 1 burgers, and on Tuesdays it's 2 for 1 pizza! Wow, you can save a lot of money bringing a big group and splitting the bill with that deal!
We will be back often.
