My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant since we were 19 years old and after 12 years, it hurts me to say that we will not be returning to the "new" New Chinatown.
The food isn't the same and the prices have changed. The food we ordered was just awful. My Kung pao chicken was oily, unseasoned, flavor less and had more vegetables than chicken! My husbands orange chicken was completely different from what it used to be. The "orange sauce" was served on the side and was flavor less and the chicken was dry.
I will always have wonderful memories of the "old" New Chinatown.
Steer clear! Under new management
The menu, cook, and restaurant has changed! Food is horrible. Salt and pepper porkchop, S&P squid, and beef chow fun does not look and taste the same. The appetizers section has been removed. Prices are now marked up. Server does not have the same spunk as old man and the tall guy with glasses. Such sad news.
Open late for me and my date! :)
Hole in the wall restaurant that's open late AND has a plethora of Chinese food items on the menu. We ordered the small wonton soup which was enough for two persons. The dish was filled with bok choy, at least 10 wontons, chop suey (red pork) and an opaque pork broth, topped with diced scallions. Are you drooling yet???? All combined together to become an amazingly soothing and fulfilling dish after a long night of dancing and drinking on the town. Honestly, I could say it's probably ranked in the upper 90th percentile as to how good this wonton soup was compared to others that I have tried.
The crowd is mixed. There were blacks, mexicans and asians all in one area. The dining area is mall but you can combine tables if you have a larger party (as the group behind us had done for their party of 8 persons).
Service was pretty practical of an Asian establishment. Server says hi, give us menus and tea, walks around, takes our order, pay at counter, leave and he might or might not say thank you and bye.
Prices were INEXPENSIVE. I was expecting a tiny bowl of wonton soup but out came this motherload of wontons floating in broth. Sooooo worth the visit if you're hungry and it's late and south of the loop isn't too bothersome for you. I'll have to try something else tonight if dim sum isn't available. :D
HIT IT!!!!!
It was 4AM, and at first. I was a bit apprehensive about eating at New China Town Chop Suey. But once I tried the food, I changed my mind. The salt n pepper squid used to be my favorite, (once I had the courage to try it) but my new favorite is the beef chow mein, extra crispy. I don't really even need the beef... the chow mein noodles and the sauce are REALLY great by themselves! The sauce is flavorful and not overly salty as some Chinese food can be.The portions are more than generous, and one dish will easily be enough for 2-3 people.

-=Décor=-
Yeah, drop off your bougy taste of your ideal elegant dining at the door... Keep in mind it's 5:34AM and this restaurant is a hole in the wall. Please keep in mind that this spot has DA BEST Salt 'n Pepper Pork chops chinatown! Watch out, it's filled with chopped up bones! Everything on the menu is super cheap. Credit card machine has been out of order since 2002. So bring cash!
-=Service=-
If you see a young, tall asian guy with glasses in the white shirt, black pants and black gym shoes? Yeah that's Ray. I have no complaints about him at all... I want to give him five stars in LIVE! If you want any beverage of any kind, just stand up and get it your self. Water will come after the first dish is out or maybe not at all. Food comes up randomly. Someone could finish their food before you even get yours. Fried eggs will be last, you can count on it! You will also need to request a spoon, if you really need one.
-=Food=-
Drunk or sober, the Chinese food served here is always slammin' good and extremely cheap! I've listed a few items below that my friends and I would always order. We always make sure we do family style dining (we share our food). Like I said before, food will randomly come out, not in any order and at times really slow. So share! You'll thank me later. Everything I've ordered was on point and I've never had a disappointment when it comes to their food.

5AM on any given night? Don't feel like fast food or deal with a chain restaurant? Drunk? Long Night? HUNGRY?
If so!? NEW CHINA TOWN CHOP SUEY is for YOU!!!
IT'S LATE AT NIGHT AND YOU WANT CHINESE FOOD.
C H I N A T O W N.
NEW CHINA TOWN CHOP SUEY!!!
OK so, the place next door looks a lot more presentable.
Well don't be fooled. Â New Chinatown Chop Suey has way better food.
Drunk or not...you won't be disappointed with the following dishes:
-Schezwan Eggplant.
-Salt n' Pepper Squid
-Salt n' Pepper Pork
-Oxtail
-Beef Chow Mein, extra crispy
-Ask for a fried egg on the side!
LARGE PORTIONS. CHEAP. EFFIN' GOOD!!!!
The Salt n Peppa dishes are both deep fried...and sooo good.
Be careful eating the Salt n Pepper Pork as well as the Oxtail because there are a lot of bones left inside.. Â Definitely worth the trouble.
The Schezwan Eggplant COULD PASS for a meat dish...EVEN IF YOU DO NOT LIKE EGGPLANT....TRY THIS DISH...otherwise the Schezwan Chicken is pretty good too!
If you get a fried egg or three...be sure to ask for them to bring it out first....otherwise it will come DEAD LAST....after you are done eating.
Cash Only. Â
Help yourself to some pop in the fridge.
Open until 5am!
Better tasting food than next door!
Were you partying, drunk, going crazy, etc... til 4am?
Yes.
Feel like delicious Chinese Food?
Yes.
Don't give two shits about food presentation and the interior of the restaurant?
No.
Then.. Yay! I'm a fan.
What did I order? Duck Fried Rice; one of the only places I'm aware of that serves this.
Don't look for the name Chop Suey anywhere on the door.
We went after seeing Rush on Monday night. Â It wasn't too hard to find except the name isn't what is listed here. Â We actually went because it was suggested here on yelp as a good place for late night food.
It was okay. Â The pot stickers were right on. Â The chop suey, eh. Â As typical for this kind of place, no fountain drinks on bottles in the cooler, but all at better than gas station prices. Â The server/cashier was nice but I'm not sure he spoke english.
There were other places open, and busier, perhaps that should've been a sign to us to go somewhere else. Â Oh, and they definitely don't take credit cards, so make sure you have some cash. Â We ate for well under 20 bucks though so you don't need a lot of cash.
Be expected to be approached by panhandlers when you go in, we got hit on the way in and on the way out.
Stopped here for take out at the end of an incredibly stressful night, at an ungodly late hour. I was amused when the little Asian grandmother staggered out in her night coat to prepare my meal. This place is in no way fancy, the Chinese equivalent of a greasy spoon all nighter. What this place lacks in splendor, it makes up for in interesting menu choices and gritty charm.
I was feeling a little funky that early am, so I ordered the stir fried blue crab , my first time ordering the dish. I was more than pleased with my entree and thought it was great. I ordered a side of beef fried rice, I've had this fried rice in a dozen places, pretty typical but still very good. I think I just found the front runner in my search for a favorite place in Chinatown.
Here's the deal. Whether it is 2 am or 2 pm, if I suddenly get a craving for Chinese food, this place instantly comes to mind. They have the best veggie egg rolls, best pot stickers, the best fried rice, the best cashew chicken, the best beef and broccoli, the best hong kong steak, hands down. I have never had anything that I didn't like from this place. But enough about me, if you scroll through the following reviews, it is plain to see that there has been less than a handful of bad reviews. That should speak for itself!
It's right off the Chinatown red line stop and the Cermak exit from the highway so it's easy to get to whether you're on public transit or in a car.
NOTE: They do not take credit cards so make sure you have cash in hand!
I came to Chinatown after going out on black Wednesday. My friends and I planned on going to 3 Happiness (which I LOVE) but the wait was ridiculous so we decided to try out the identical looking place next door. This unfortunately was New China Town Chop Suey..
The waiter was confused from the moment we stepped foot into the place. It's not like the place was that busy but it took us about 40 minutes to get him to take our order, and once after, a shocking 1 hour to receive our food! (Water was served long after the food, after asking for the umpteenth time) Now, I wouldn't normally freak out about a long wait, but this is CHINATOWN. Chinatown is known for fast service and faster food.
This place was so unorganized with the orders and the waiter was a complete ding dong. He served us the wrong appetizer and it somehow still made it's way onto our tab. The first dish that came out, came 15 minutes before the rest.. Just unacceptable.
Now the food was okay.. I give it that. But just OKAY. Why come here when you can go to the many other late night Chinatown eateries nearby that won't have you begging for food and water??
Never will I ever step foot in this place again!
This place really hits the spot when it comes to finding a place to eat late at night. Â Forget Ihop people its all about this place if you are hungry and looking for a delectable bite. Â When I went there we had the Salt n' Pepper Pork Chops, Spicy Egg Plant (AMAZING!), Pork Dumplings, Beef with Noodles (I forget which one), Fried and White Rice and finally the greatest thing ever, glasses of free water. Â I went there with some great company and it was a lot of fun. Â The place was packed with people, and there was only one waiter who was all over the place and was on point when it came to timing for water refills. Â The appearance of the establishment is like most late night eating restaurants, grimmmmmmmeeeeeeeee, but still it was satisfying just to sit down, talk and eat. Â I would recommend this place to anyone who would like a late night meal that will satisfy you till you are about to explode. Â The food is right to the point, fill my stomach and make me full.

Had a craving for some bad Chinese food last night at 11 with the gf and walked around Chinatown before giving this place a try.
First Impression: Very hole-in-the-wall type restaurant. Similar to what you may see in China. The cheap linoleum flooring to the chairs. As dirty as it looks, it fits the restaurant well! 1/1 star
Food: I had the beef & tomato rice (with added Egg) and my gf had the black pepper beef chow mein. The rice was TASTY TASTY!~ The beef was tender and the sauce wasn't too sweet. The way I like it! The chow mein wasn't bad, but they put way too much black pepper in. After a while, all I really tasted was black pepper! I'm guessing that can be a hit or miss dish. 1/2 stars
Drinks: Didn't have one here, as they only had canned soda, bottle water and Arizona ice tea. But I will give them the star anyway for carrying Brisk Iced Tea! That's BRISK BABY! 1/1 star
Service: Definitely pretty weak sauce here. I asked him to recommend some rice boxes and he didn't seem too sure. Working in a restaurant, I'd think he should know at least what's popular and not. *sigh* I'm glad he didn't recommend anything anyway...I liked my Beef Tomato and Egg Rice! 0/1 star
All in all, New Chinatown Restaurant wasn't what I would say Awesome, but it surely wasn't bad! I may have to come back for my $4.25 rice box!
Ohhhhhh, I get it now, this place's real name is "New China Town Chop Suey"
As everyone said, its a late night joint. I usually go there with a group after a night of drinking and fun. This is an intimate place with one waiter (be patient). The service is good and they are fast an efficient. Chinatown is a beautiful place but New China isn't.... the restaurant gets to the REAL business at hand....the eats. I like it, its simple.
The place only takes cash because "the credit merchant is out of order" and has been like that for as long as I have been going there (over 7 years). When you go there I suggest:
1. You don't go there after the club closes if you don't want to wait for a table because that place gets packed. It happens to my friends and I all the time. We go after a night of drinking, dancing, and fun then we head over to New China for some good cheap eats...then they are packed to the gills. It is so packed that you see people practically standing and eating. Then we end up getting frustrated and eating next door, Three happiness....HUGE mistake. Three Happiness doesn't satisfy as good as New China will.
2. Bring cash. To keep your cost down...try the "over rice dishes" on the menu.
3. Try all or any of these items:
Salt and Pepper pork Chops
Clams in oyster sauce
shrimp and scrambled eggs
Salt and pepper shrimp w/o the shell
BBQ pork fried rice
Crab Rangoon
Hong Kong Steak (expensive but goooooood)
Chinese broccoli
Go out of your way and try this hidden treasure and you will be thanking me.
new china town chop suey? Â what the heck is this place?!? Â ohhh you mean new chinatown restaurant...
MMMM...when I was young and didn't know any better, we all went to Seven Treasures after the 18+ parties. Â now that we're old and wiser, we go to New Chinatown when we want some chinese food after clubbing. Â Ray is the tall lanky dork in the glasses and white dress shirt black pants that's always serving during late night - good guy.
With all that being said, their chinese food here is REALLY good. Â and really cheap. Â The mongolian beef, the beef tofu over rice, the beef stew over rice, the beef fried rice (do i see a trend here?), the salt and pepper pork chop, the chicken wings, SPOT ON for everything I've had here thus far. Â I thought for a moment that I might be favorable to their food because I'm almost always drunk and really hungry and it's 5:30 in the morning, but the times i was sober I do remember the food still being really good.
Chinatown is pretty shady late at night so do arrive with crew and park on cermak in plain sight. Â If New Chinatown is too packed, there's always 3 Happiness next door and Emerald across the street, but New Chinatown is my first pick.
All I have to say really - THE BEST salt and pepper pork chops and crab rangoon in chinatown!!! Â And super cheap too, except their credit card machine has been out of order for years (why can't they just say "we don't accept credit cards"?).
You have to come here without expectations of a fancy place or super awesome service, if you have dined in chinatown before than you should know what's up.
The same young guy with glasses in the white shirt always serves us. Â I have no complaints about him at all, nice guy, does his job, calmly handles the bums that come in, and does his best on his own when it's busy late night on the weekends.
:) :) :) :)
I'm surprised more people haven't reviewed this place. Probably because no one really knows the actual name of the restaurant and it's mainly just referred to as "New Chinatown" by late-night regulars. Weird. Anyway, it may be out of nostalgia and years of coming here that I love this place so much, but I earnestly believe the food is that good. In general, I am not a big fan of Chinese food. Rarely do I choose to eat Chinese-- and when I have no other choice, rarely will I enjoy it. But I love the food here. The wonton soup is far better than the majority, the salt and pepper porkchops alone are worth the trek here, the beef chow fun (extra crispy as my friend always requests it) is so very good, and the Hong Kong-style fried rice is like a party in your mouth. And those are just the tried-and-true favorites. There is a vast world that awaits us.
Review Source:What makes this place so awesome is that you can come here after a night of clubbing/partying with friends to get some good Chinese food. Â But be prepared, if you do come here around 5 amish on Fri or Sat, you might not be able to find a seat because it's packed! Their salt and pepper anything is good but I think the squid is my personal favorite. Â Their hong kong steak, hot & sour soup, curry chicken and potstickers are delicious as well. Â I've never had a dish here that I haven't liked!
Review Source:I've been eating at this restaurant for over 6 years and I had no idea this place was called New Chinatown Chop Suey! I always thought it was simply new Chinatown.
Whatever the name maybe, they have the best egg drop soup and veg egg rolls in Chinatown. I've rarely tried anything else besides the egg rolls, egg drop soup and vegetarian fried rice. This was our favorite place to go at 2 am when I was in college and remains a favorite place whenever I'm craving Chinese food.
The look of the restaurant is pretty basic, nothing trendy, hell, doesn't even feel clean half the time. They have a TV that is probably as old as I am with an antenna that wouldn't catch a signal if it was being transmitted from New Chinatown's kitchen! Oh and don't be shocked if homeless people come in (usually late at night) asking for change or get a can of pop!
The waiters don't really speak English, especially the older guy and everytime my order comes out, I'm shocked to see that it is what I had ordered !
It really is a fun experience to eat here late at night.
Their credit card machine has been 'out of order' for years! I have paid with a card before, but not in the past couple of years - so make sure you have cash.
Next time you're in Chinatown late at night, try New Chinatown for a cheap, quick and good Egg drop soup and Egg rolls!
Best LATE NIGHT chinese restaurant in the city! I have not set foot in this place earlier than 2am, nor would i need to with the abundance of great restaurants in chinatown. But when your after-clubbing crave does not call for gyros or polishes, this is the spot!
Must haves include: hong-kong steak, hot+sour soup, salt+pepper squid
Also very tasty: potstickers, beef in oyster sauce, tofu in bean curd, fried chicken, wonton soup, curry chicken, and some clam dish in a black bean sauce
Ahhh, new chinatown restaurant... there's only one time of day that i ever visit this place, and that's usually at the wee hours of the early morning after a night of dancing/drinking, before we go home to our warm beds...
the food is not bad at all, especially when you're starving... we always get the salt and pepper shrimp (which is laced with lots of salt and msg, good when you're in the mood for that), salt and pepper pork (which i must warm, probably is composed of more batter than pork, but it's an acquired taste), the hong kong fried rice (good), beef chow fun (beef very tender), and sauteed veggies in garlic or bean curd sauce...
this isn't a place you go to for service, half the time your waitstaff doesn't speak english very well (menu comes in handy to communicate/translate)
the food is very affordable, but you must have cash (no credit card machine... sign says it's broken, but i think they've never had one in the first place :)
this place really hits the spot when you need it!
One of my favorite late nite grub destinations!
They are open from 5 pm to 5 am, this place is always packed with people after last call at the bars/clubs.
The food is better than most late night joints. Â If you and your friends are either 1. too tired to really figure out what to order or 2. too drunk to care what you're eating, I would recommend just ordering one of the family style menus. Â fair warning, always order for the amount below the actual number of people in your group, otherwise you'll have so much food you won't know what to do with it.
There really isn't much too look at, it's your basic hole in the wall chinese restaurant: tables, chairs, cooler with bottled beverages. Â Don't get me wrong, it's clean enough but there really isn't much of an ambiance. Â It's your basic, I want food, feed me and let me out type of place.
Service can be spotty, as there is usually only one person working the front even when the place is packed. Â They try and are courteous, but there is only so much one person can do on their own.
Bring cash, if I remember correctly, they no longer accept credit cards.
