A nice addition to the West Loop neighborhood. The sandwiches can be a little bit pricey, but they are made to order. Great coffee too. I've only ever been here for lunch and it's always a bit of a wait to order and then wait for your food. The sandwiches are good -- the Sweet Cubano is my current favorite.
Review Source:It was one of the saddest days of my life when Nohea left my neighborhood of Roscoe Village and moved to the West Loop. Â I LOVE Nohea, its ownership, staff and especially food. Â I'm so jealous of you West Loopers for getting one of the most charming sandwich/pastry/coffee/ice cream cafes in the city! Â I love it so much that I'm willing to make the trek from Roscoe Village to the West Loop in Saturday afternoon traffic just to get there.
Totally kid friendly (toys and stuff for kids to play), kid-friendly food line the shelves, and the staff lets you stay and linger over delicious sandwiches and probably the best ice cream ever (Ashby's). Â It's a mom-daughter team that owns and runs the cafe, and they do it really well. Â Try their breakfast croissant sandwich - piled high with eggs, the crispiest bacon, cheese on a flaky large croissant. Â You can also custom order sandwiches, paninis and wraps. Â The coffee is really delicious. There's room for strollers, and the owners love kids (nice large bathroom with very nice kid changing table). Â That said, for you non-parents, it's not over run with kids, so no worries there either. The traffic flow is good, decor very elegant but still comfy and cozy and food is very fresh and made and brought out on a timely basis. Â Despite my best efforts, I still haven't found a substitute for Nohea in or around Roscoe Village. Â Maybe I'll have to move to West Loop to get my daily Nohea breakfast croissant/coffee fix.
Really has alot of potential but for the price you get a TINY sandwich and nothing else with it. Â Same prices as Jerrys but way smaller portions and no side or pickle. Â My sandwich today had more lettuce and bread than meat and cheese and it was very dry. Â For a size comparison the sandwich had a diameter about 3/4 of the length of an iphone.
Lots of potential and very nice staff, just not enough quality or bang for your buck quite yet.
Great sandwiches! This is a very cute cafe in the West loop area. My friends and I came  here (total of 7) for lunch. We each ordered a sandwich (except for one who ordered a breakfast croissant). Sandwiches were decent. Nothing to complain. The drinks were okay.
The owner of the cafe was really nice and offered us free desserts (probably because we were there to test out the food and environment for throwing a potential bridal shower there). She gave us more than enough desserts to try out. The desserts tasted okay..the chocolate cake was probably my favorite. The others were eh.. ok.
Overall decent experience. Cute cafe, again!
Very intimate and cute cafe! I went with a group of 7friends to try out this cafe and we ordered sandwiches, paninis, and salads. Although this place will be a little crowded/tight for big groups...Everything looked and tasted great! I loved my aloha latte. The owner noticed us chatting for a while after having lunch and she offered us a free plate of yummy pastries! Will definitely go back if I want a comfortable place to sit down and have a drink with delicious pastries or quick bite!
Review Source:Horrible experience. Â They claim to be kid friendly but clearly are not !!! Â My child ( who has some disabilities) and her friends were playing with the toys (that they provide) and being silly & enjoying themselves. Â The owner came over and sarcastically told us we needed to sit down in their seats. Â She was clearly annoyed that the kids were not sitting down eating. Â DON'T HAVE TOYS AND CANDY IF YOU DON'T WANT KIDS TO PLAY! Â When I confronted her she told me that I should have control over my kids. Â Horrible place. Â Â Don't go here if you have kids & especially don't go here if your child has any disability. Â UNPROFESSIONAL & RUDE!
Review Source:I stopped into Nohea for the first time this morning. The place is cute, the bagel I ordered delicious, but the owner (I assumed) was a little bit off. She was aggressive and whiny with the staff (who were waiting on me at the time), and stood behind the counter--in full view and ear shot of all customers--having a conversation on the telephone about hiring a new employee. To top it off, she wasn't even nice to whomever was on the other end of the line. Don't you have a back room in which you could conduct your business? I didn't get a good vibe from the place and I was made uncomfortable by the aggression coming off this lady. I don't know... I don't think I'll be back, as I prefer the really warm, friendly environment of Morgan Street a few blocks east. Truly though, good bagel! Maybe it was just a bad day for this woman? Who knows.
Review Source:Happy they opened in the neighborhood since lunch spots are scarce around here, but a little confused by the outdated business practices - when I suggested LevelUp and Belly, the two people I talked to were totally resistant. Still using credit cards AND you have to sign? Sandwich card? Inefficient.
The rather large dog biscuits right next to the compact cash register/ordering area have a strong smell and are a bit unappetizing to a human. And I'm a dog person! Cute idea but possibly a different location for them?
So happy this placed opened in my neighborhood. The Julius Meinl coffee is great and the baked goods are delicious. I had a Southwest salad for lunch - its HUGE and very tasty. The service is very friendly and the space is so cute and warm. They also have a fun selection of candy, specialty gourmet items and jewelry. I'll definitely be going back a lot!
Review Source:Really cute spot, friendly staff, and tasty food. They have a great little selection of specialty snacks, drinks, and groceries. Boars head meat is a huge plus, too. I would complain that their prices are pretty high, but it seems like they use high quality ingredients, so i can let it slide. I ordered a breakfast croissant and it was STACKED with eggs and bacon, def worth the price tag. seriously, there was enough scrambled egg to feed a family :) Food comes out fast, and they have tables to sit at and relax for a minute.
I work down the block, otherwise this west loop neighborhood wouldn't really appeal to me as a place to walk around and find a bite to eat. i recommend stopping in and trying a sandwich or coffee here
WHAT A GREAT ADDITION TO THE WEST LOOP! Â Thanks for joining our neighborhood!
LOVE the menu here, with great breakfast and lunch items, including all Boar's Head meats - what a huge difference!
Creative and interesting items <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.noheacafe.com&s=d48f7f0823c0cf665c548405db5ca4255972e63f684e7293277f11209cfa01ab" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.noheacafe.com</a>
I had the most incredible tea today: Â Â Roasted Almond Iced Tea
This was an incredible find!
Each item is carefully, hand made, so it will take a couple of minutes, but don't worry, you can nosh on the outrageous baked good or premium ice creams!
WOW, need to start walking more, to make room for their delectables!
Welcome to the neighborhood! It was definitely worth the wait... and love that you have Boars Head and Julius Meinl coffee!
Right off the bat, we only have rave reviews on the food and timely service - we have had breakfast and lunch so far and absolutely loved our sandwiches.
More info - we had an egg, cheese and crispy bacon breakfast sandwich on a pretzel roll - YUM (with some sort of sauce that made it even more delicious). Have also tried the Breakfast tostado (perfect for a light dish for one) and the Ultimate Breakfast sandwich on pugliese bread - my husband enjoyed it with extra crispy bacon.
For lunch, we had the chicken salad with cucumber and tomato (my husband and I are really picky about tomatoes and these were so perfectly ripe, they almost seemed like a red bell pepper - crispy, but yet juicy). So many bread choices, so we chose focaccia for our chicken salad (and they use light basil mayo too). I have also had the Southwestern salad and will be getting again.
The atmosphere is very comfy - many items to look at/purchase while waiting and I love the couch in the back with different books to read.
I look forward to outdoor space next spring/summer, hopefully!
Firstly, how the heck do you pronounce the name o fthis place.
Second, this is a good little café in Roscoe Village. The bacon, egg, and croissant sandwhich is like an upscale version of Dunkin' Big & Toasty. Clogs my arteries but brings a smile to my face.
* from my visit on 12/30/11
Oh Nohea you have been so disappointing lately. Here's the thing- i LOVE their food. Â The mixed greens and Spanish Verde are just so delicious. And the decor is so cute. Â
But this place is in need of a serious management overhaul. Â Every time I have gone in there in the last couple months, it's chaos. Â There are always 4 or 5 people behind the counter, but it takes the food forever to come out and it takes people FOREVER to order. Â Yesterday, I called in an order for take out. Â I was in there for upwards of 20 minutes just waiting to pick up from the counter. Two women cut me in line. Â I understand that this could be a one-time thing, but this is ALL the time. Â The staff need to manage their time and customers better.
I am so frustrated but will continue to go because truly their food is so good.
great atmosphere for a quiet breakfast or lunch. Christian coffee shop = peaceful and joyful! kid-friendly. caveat: closes early, around 3. I am from Denver and my computer time is Denver time so I had NO idea that 1: they were closing and 2: the correct time. They didn't rush me; the opposite, they were totally cool with me finishing up my work and then leaving. GREAT coffee spot!
Review Source:This is my favorite place in the neighborhood! Coffee, candy, sandwiches, salads, and great breakfast! Â I go here once a day and sometimes twice. The owners are so lovely and greet you by name. Â The food is fresh and the sandwiches and salads are very big! Â They have wifi so you can also get some work done. And also VERY kid friendly! Â I love this place so much!
Review Source:Mmm, mmm! Wow, this place is amazing! I ordered a Roscoe Reuben and a cream of spinach soup the other day and it was heaven! Seriously one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! Very flavorful and fresh.
My husband and I have also had wonderful and delicious catering service from Nohea and couldn't be more pleased. Our guests were more than satisfied! An all around exceptional cafe with great service and food.
My only complaint is that they are not open later during the week! They close at 6 p.m. If they were open till 7 p.m. I'd be sending my husband, who works nearby, to pick up dinner here at least once a week!
To me, Nohea Cafe is one of those quaint neighborhood places that you definitely would miss if you weren't looking for it. If I didn't have a 2Buck Duck deal, I certainly wouldn't have taken the time to look for the place. Thank goodness I did.
I went here for lunch with my sister and ordered the Italian Scallion: Ham, Salami, lettuce, tomato, giardinera, mayo and provolone on ciabatta. She ordered the chicken caprese: chicken breast, greens, tomato, mozzarella, vinaigrette dressing and mayo on foccaccia. We both had the same opinions of each of our sandwiches in that they were tasty. She liked hers better than I did though.
I do give them points for everything else though. The ambiance of the place was nice; however if you are annoyed by children running around, I give you fair warning. I didn't mind. I thought the prices were pretty reasonable too, as well as the food selection: meats, cheeses, pastries and bread.
Since it's in my neighborhood, I'd probably try this place again.
This place has amazing sandwiches! My boyfriend and I stopped here on a whim on Saturday since we were in the neighborhood, starving and needed something quick and easy. Â Thank you Yelp app on the iphone for finding this place for us! Â The chicken caprese panini was easily one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Â Every sandwich on the menu sounded better than the one before it and it was difficult to pick which one to chose! Â The cafe was beyond cute and quaint, and I could see that it would be a great place for meetings and also very family friendly. Â
In short, I'm sad I hadn't discovered this place earlier! Â Get here!
Yum!
This place makes delicious sandwiches...even better than the ones from Costello's across the street.
I had a Smokin' Turkey on a pretzel roll and my husband got the Spicy Salsalito. Both were very flavorful and just delicious. Also, the sandwiches were huge, so I could only eat half of mine.
The prices may be a little steep for a sandwich, but you get what you pay for. These sandwiches are worth it.
I just saw from other reviews that they serve Julius Meinl coffee. I will definitely need to go back for their coffee, that's my favorite kind.
I actually had heard of Nohea Cafe because around Christmas time, they had a fun little tree lighting ceremony for all of Roscoe Village. It's a great little family cafe. I hope they do that again this Christmas too.
Somewhere at the intersection of phenomenal sandwiches & very friendly staff is where you will find this great little shop known as Nohea Cafe in Chicago's Roscoe Village.
I discovered this spot somewhat by accident while visiting my accountant in the area. The cafe is located near the major streets of Roscoe and Damen. From street level, I felt compelled to stop in as my eyes were instantly drawn to the colorful cakes, big cookies and interesting donuts on display.
I don't know if she was the owner or manager, but the woman behind the counter was as beautiful as she was nice. After grazing the menu, I ordered a coffee, along with a chicken sandwich and went to a table.
While waiting for my order, I couldn't help but to notice the local artwork for sale on the wall. Since Roscoe village is a pretty artsy community, it made sense that I would see Chicago photographs, and interesting abstract paintings. Nohea also has a very warm decor. The tables are large, so four people can easily enjoy lunch. The cafe is also an ideal place for moms who want to bring little kids along as there are tables with games and toys to play with.
Food
Put it this way: I was sitting at my table when the woman served my dish and my mouth dropped. My comment was, " Is that for me"? The sandwich was absolutely huge and yumalicious. I always appreciate it when a sandwich shop isn't cheap on the meat. I can't remember what all they hooked the sandwich up with, but all I can remember was it was tangy, and real good.
The only minor drawback to this cafe is that it's not open late enough. If it were open at night, I'd be there all the time.
Nohea also has a ton of other food items that look awesome, including a unique breakfast menu. Â I'm going to have to go back on a Sunday morning sometime in the future.
Oh, I am so definitely a fan.
Nohea Cafe is one of those little neighborhood gems that you walk by randomly, stop and stare into the windows (much to window sitters' chagrin) and then finally convince yourself that it's worth checking out.
I came in today with my stomach rumbling from neglect and money in my pocket. With a long list of scrumptious-sounding sandwiches, I finally narrowed down my choice to the Chicken Focaccia sandwich--oy. That honey-leek sauce, the warm and soft focaccia--hours later, my salivary glands are having dreams about it. And what's more, is that they aren't just a sandwich shop with Boar's Head products (yum! Meat!), they are also a bakery, a dry goods shop, almost like a little European mart. They carry the same kind of goodies you might find at Gene's in Lincoln Square: dried sausage, cheeses, specialty drinks, Lavosh crackers, even organic baby food. Heck, they even have ice cream!
Extra points to Nohea for:
-Julius Meinl coffee (way to represent)
-A table that looks like it belongs in your parents' dining room and can seat the whole family
-Red velvet doughnuts...seriously. OMG.
So why not 5 stars, mmm? Only frequent future trips will decide if this place is the best of the best.
Don't miss the menu here, we almost did! Â When you approach the counter you only see standard coffee house fair so at first, we only ordered some lattes and muffins. The menu is not intuitively visible, it looks more like wall-art than a menu... so be sure to look up and to the right...
The sandwiches here are drool worthy. Delicious breads! Perfect combination of ingredients! And the price reflects it...whoa almost $9 for a small sandwich! But I felt less cranky about my purchase after I tasted the food and the light bulb went on that this is more of a delicious sandwich spot than a coffee shop.
Anxious to return to try the soups, salads, and breakfast items. A wonderful place to visit in Roscoe Village.
This little coffee shop / deli sandwich place is really cute! Stars for cleanliness, super friendly staff, and amazing sandwiches.
This is not an everyday sort of place for me, but more like a treat when I feel like spending 10-15 dollars for lunch. Next time, I'm trying their home made chips. Next time.
I love Roscoe Village and this cafe has become one of my favorite meeting places in the city. Â
First, the ambiance is warm and comfortable. Â The cafe is designed with a variety of seating options. Â You can sit in a comfortable booth, table, or in a cushy chair. Â The music selection was excellent. Â
Second, the food is delicious. Â After going to this restaurant for a sandwich, all other big chain sandwich places are ruined in my mind. Â I have had so many items on the menu and everything was top quality.
Finally, the service is warm and friendly. Â I feel like a friend in Shirley's home. Â
Do not delay, you need to visit this cafe.
I just wanted to tackle some of the negative reviews. Â First off, the sandwiches aren't any more costly than Jimmy John's (for a JJ Club, which is comparable in size) or Costello's (which, in my opinion has gone down in quality).
Second, most people don't go to a cafe to listen to music; it's part of the ambience, not the showcase. Â Who cares if they play Jesus music? Â You're really going to give them two stars based on THAT? Â Ridiculous. Â I'm sure the die-hard clientele of Victory Banner don't gripe and moan over the sitar and flute Eastern-Indian music wafting over the speakers while they're eating their heavenly stuffed French Toast. Â Sorry, not good enough reason to give a low rating. Â Just bring your iPod and problem solved.
As for no free WiFi, it's common for neighborhood cafe's to not offer it anymore as they lose business for all the moochers that just sit there for hours and drink one cup of coffee.
Go for the great sandwiches, ice cream and other gourmet items along with the lovely ladies and their super-friendly service. Â Kids love it too. Â "Nuff said.
I want so badly to like this place because it's so close to my house. Â It really isn't my kind of "cafe" to begin with I guess. Â This is the kind of place where urban upper middle class stroller pushers/mommies to be come to gossip and feed after their pilates classes and manicures. Â Not really my crowd, but whatever. Â
Let's start with the positive. Â Their sandwiches are f***ing heavenly. Â A little pricey, but totally worth it if you want to spoil yourself for lunch. Â The first time I went in I think I got the Chicken Caprese. Â YUM! Â Seriously! Â Second time I tried something with turkey on a pretzel roll which was also phenomenal. Â It came with a side of sweet potato chips which were delicious as well, I just wish they'd given me more than an amount that fit into the palm of my hand. Â The lady that I usually see at the counter is always really nice, no complaints about service. Â
I'm kind of sad that they switched to Julius Meinl coffee. Â I love Metropolis dearly and the new stuff doesn't even begin to compare in my opinion.
I tried to sit in here once to enjoy my sammich but I just couldn't. Â I just unwrapped my awesome lunch, on a toasted foccacia roll thingy when I hear "I love you Jeeeeeeeeeesus" emanating from the speakers. Â Um...no thanks. Â I can *almost* tolerate the ultra-lite rock Dido type crap they usually play in here but Christian tunes in a cafe? Â No. Â I'm not here to sh*t on anyone's right to believe whatever they want to believe in but I find it incredibly presumptuous that they'd think everyone else wants to listen to Christian music while they eat their food. Â Unless you market yourself as a Christian cafe in some way, don't assume that everyone is going to be okay with eating and listing to how great some terrible singer thinks that Jesus is. Â
Meh. Â Lose the Jesus tunes and lower the prices and maybe I'll come back for another sandwich.
My favorite place to go for sandwiches when I'm in the city. Great smoked turkey sandwich and fantastic roast beef sandwich on a pretzel roll. Great desserts and ice cream. Michelle and Shirley are the friendliest restaurant owners in the city. Free parking on the street - no meters. And great music.
If you're looking for a great spot for breakfast or lunch - or want to pick up some food before the Cubs game - stop in - you'll be very pleased.
Great Cafe: clean, consistant, and friendly, the vibe here is safe and collected. They have comfortable seating, free wifi (actually, see below), and great cafe food, i.e. creative sandwiches, served with real, fresh ingredients and homemade chips on the side. It's certainly much better than the Starbucks down the street that seems to be constantly packed.
The only problem with this place is their terrible music. It seems to be either Coldplay or Christian Rock (seriously), so bring headphones / earbuds.
Update: They discontinued their wifi, apparently people were camping at lunch time, so their solution is to stop the wifi...
Wonderful!
Cold air-conditioning!
Calm environment!
Warm and tasty roasted chicken amazing! Â It was a gently warmed Focaccia with tender juicy chicken breast, delicately sauteed Leeks with moments of lemon herb and happiness... Â It was wonderful through every bite!
I am a fan and I will be back! Â This you can bet on for sure!
As a Roscoe Village resident, I am always excited to see new restaurants open in the neighborhood. I have been meaning to try Nohea Cafe for a while and finally stopped in for lunch on Friday. All in all, Nohea Cafe is a great spot to grab a coffee, sandwich surf the internet, pick up some baked goods or ice cream and just hang out.
I went with my dad and had the special turkey meatloaf sandwich with cole slaw on it. He had the sweet Cubano sandwich with ham, carnitas, pickles, sweet mustard on a ciabatta roll. We picked up a bag of chips and a cupcake to split and we had a good meal.
The sandwiches are made fresh and do take a little bit of time to prepare. The chips weren't your normal Lays or Cheetos but homemade chips. They had a few different varieties including salt, barbecue and sweet potato. The cupcake was good, it was no Bleeding Heart cupcake but it was a great way to end the meal.
Sweet Nohea also has a few grocery items for sale in addition to the prepared food. It is a great spot to go in Roscoe Village and I am excited to head back.
*POW*
I have fallen in love...and his name is Twisted Ham!!
Who knew pretzel rolls could be so good? Â I sure didn't. Â The Twisted Ham sandwich was simply amazing (well worth the $8).
~Mixed Greens, Avocado, Tomato, Swiss & Dijon Mustard on a Pretzel Roll~
I don't remember the last time I was so impressed by a sandwich. Â The meat was so FRESH, the buns so soft and the avocado tied it all nicely together. Â They offer a good variety of beverages besides the normal soda selection. Â I went with the grape juice pouch. Â It says on the back:
"He who throws mud only loses ground - Fat Albert"
How profound! If I hadn't been so full, I would have ordered a slice of the lemon pie I sampled. Â The people working there were nice and friendly. Â The cafe is super clean and has free Wi-Fi.
Instructions:
-Walk on in and order at the counter.
-Turn around and pick out your choice of beverage from the fridge.
-Pay for your food.
-Pick a seat and wait for your order to be delivered.
-Enjoy!
BYOB
Appears to be a coffee shop, but in reality its more of a cafe that you'd cozy up and eat lunch in...but word on the street (Roscoe Street!) is that they are getting an espresso machine soon. (fingers crossed). It really could rock a coffee shop vibe, methinks...
AND, they do serve brewed Metropolis...which I do love, so points for that.
*Counter service: order yourself!
*Cozy/comfy booths.
*Free wi-fi. (and gooooooood)
*sweet people at the counter
*chocolate covered biscotti
*free parking on side streets
I think once they figure themselves out a bit, this'll be a real "coffeeshop/mobile office" destination. With food. Brilliant. :)
This is so very Roscoe Village. That is a compliment! I don't know what the NYC analog to RV is. Murray Hill? I dunno. All I know is that when I walk down Roscoe, even in the middle of winter, I feel cool, a little sexy and like I should have some sort of vibraphone playing in the background, while the number 50 bus splashes me with black snow (but, I will never look like a horsey ballerina). What was I talking about? Oh yeah. Nohea.
Nohea sits proudly on Roscoe and is a lot deeper than it's sorta-storefront face implies. The seating arrangements are almost all booths. The booths are pretty tight. I am a trim guy. I had a hard time fitting in the booth. This could be a problem for a party of more than a few people with winter coats/bags. This is America. Better yet, this is the Midwest. We need space. We are people of girth. Step to it, Nohea.
The service is counter delivery. You step the counter, read from the board, order, sit and get your food brought out to you. I settled on the Cobb Salad sandwich and Hawaiian iced tea. The sandwich was large, but wasn't quite what I was expecting. There was a lot of turkey, almost overwhelmingly so. I appreciated the quantity but, maybe, you can cut back on the turkey and offer an equal amount of ham, avocado, egg, etc. The fun of a Cobb Salad is that there's a ton of everything. There's no real star of the show. Try to recalibrate the sandwich to reflect this. It's a great idea and the bread was the perfect choice. The tea was very tasty. I can't say what made it Hawaiian...but it tasted Hawaiian. Try it.
I can see this being a fun lunch spot in the Spring/Summer. Once it works out some kinks, there shouldn't be much holding it back. Good show, Nohea.
