We come here sometimes for early lunch on the weekends. Â Sitting outside on the patio is the way to go. Â They have tasty sandwiches and soups. Everyone (patrons and staff) is friendly and dogs are welcome outside. Â Inside there is a bar, which apparently has happy hour, but I haven't been yet. Â Nice cozy neighborhood spot! Â If it is Sunday, walk through the Farmer's Market afterwards!
Review Source:Dishonesty is what I feel after eating Mother's Day Brunch. We entered the establishment and were presented with mimosas and bloody Mary's so we were under the impression it was apart of the all you can eat brunch. Well we thought wrong. Sitting In the room without the AC on a hot summer day, We were never notified that they were not apart of the brunch, as they kept refilling and refilling. As I was once a server, if someone orders the same thing over and over I would tend to let them know the price of the item if it is not apart of the meal. Little did we know that each drink cost $7.50. They were very misleading since there were no menus or prices anywhere in the restaurant.
On top of that, brunch was mediocre and was not worth $30 plus $7 and more for the drinks for our family.
We felt very mislead and cheated.
Incredible find in area!
Knew nothing about place, stopped by for great lunch, great service, pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff. I plan to return next Saturday. Â Parking in back.
My sister had a grilled shrimp salad, dressing mild yet tasty that she enjoyed and I had the very best brunch dish ever had...spinach hash! Wow, was I surprised at the incredibly tasty and spiced just right dish with two perfect soft boiled eggs on top and just the correct amount of hollandaise sauce. I have never liked any hash, but this was very well presented with delicious lightly garlic cheese bread on side. We decided to have coffee and I am surprised to say this was the best coffee (served in a French press at table) I have had since Pete's opened in Berekeley in the seventies! Â
Can't wait to return.
Ok so I made a reservation at this restaurant purely based on Yelp's reviews...And I gotta say the place looks much nicer in the pictures... I was imagining an Elephant Bar but it turned out to be a VERY cozy small spot with great food. We arrived around 6:30ish for dinner and there was nobody at the restaurant except 2-3 people at the bar...immediately you are thrown off by the size (small) and the decor which could use some updating...We were seated at a booth which would perfectly fit 2 people..not 4... Â The garlic bread was delicious as an appetizer! I had the New York steak which was thin yet hard to chew although it was cooked perfect! Mashed potatoes with it - OK, BUT the creamy spinach is KILLER! So GOOD! Manu consists of two pages including appetizers and entrees so you have limited choice but again do not expect cheescake factory menu.
Overall it was not bad experience, prices are a big high for the quality of food and ambiance but again everyone is different and I am only expressing my own opinion :)
While the food is tasty, the entertainment is top notch, the service is horrible. I've been here several times now. Most recently, one member of our group had to get twice up to find our waiter after an hour of being ignored to ask for the check as it was 10:30. BTW, they could have sold another round - or two - Â of drinks and refilled water. We were still left waiting twenty minutes for the server to bring it/ When he finally dropped it at the table, we joked about beginning to think the meal was going to be free. His comment about not really caring about whether we pay or not, but the business does was quite telling. God only knows how much money is being allowed to walk out the door through bad service or lack of collection.
Review Source:My girlfriend and I ate here on this past Sunday morning Feb 17.
She order the apple custard french toast with a side of bacon and I order the steak and eggs over easy and it also came with potatoes and toast and jam.
This was one of the best tasting steaks I have ever tasted and they even grilled it and seasoned it. I had cut off a piece and shared it with my girlfriend and she could not believe how good it tasted, she said she wished she had order the steak and eggs.
The waiter was very pleasant and the place was very clean and this place is more upscale then most places.
This place is only opened for breakfast on Saturday & Sundays. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
They are closed every Monday
They are opened Tuesday thru Friday from 11:00 to 9:00pm.
When this restaurant was bought out a couple of years ago, my first meal with the new menu was nothing to write home about, but I was willing to come back after they settled in. I ended up waiting a year, but found that the menu was very heavy on cheese, breading and hazelnuts - three things I am allergic to. Plus, I am a Pescatarian, and they were also heavy on meats and poultry. But, the wait staff was kind and adjusted everything I ordered because there was nothing at all on the menu I could eat without requesting something be left off.
So, now I waited another year and was just there last night to see if they have upgraded their menu. Well, my tomato basil soup was served with cheese and croutons, with no mention of this, so I had to send it back. The creamed spinach was baked with cheese and breadcrumbs with no mention of this on the menu either, and the main course had cheese all over it even though I requested no cheese. The fish of the day was baked with hazelnuts so that was out, too.
It seems odd that such a high end restaurant (total bill was $95 for 2) would be so behind in the healthy preparation of food. My dining partner does eat cheese and bread, but even she was so overly full from all the rich food (still taking home leftovers) that she didn't feel well. Also, in spite of all the bread and cheese added to everything, the food underneath was a little bland. It seems like they top everything with cheese and bread to hide the lack of flavoring.
The ambiance and wait staff were delightful and we did tip well, as they have nothing to do with the menu. However, I would highly recommend the chef start using new spices and less bread and cheese to mask the flavor. Plus, the menu really should list all the ingredients to avoid some serious allergic reactions.
I just love this restaurant! Â The food is always good and predictable. Â The staff is friendly and attentive. Â The Chef is very creative and makes the neatest soups! Â I recently celebrated my birthday there and was treated like a Queen. Â The chocolate desert was to die for! Â Lunch or dinner - you can't go wrong!
Review Source:Having recently moved to Montrose, we felt the need to try all the eateries on Honolulu. You always want to have a list of places you enjoy eating at when cooking is a tedious impossibility. Oceanview Bar and Grill was an outstanding place on the list, so we gave it a shot.
The Facility -
We stopped by in the middle of the week, for dinner. The place was clean and smelled of cinnamon and vanilla. Either they were baking cookies or someone smelled of cookies. Whatever the case, it was quite pleasing.
The Service -
There was no host or hostess at the front, so we were seated by our server. He was friendly enough, but seemed disinterested in the whole "service thing." We got the vibe that this job was just a stepping stone for a full time role on General Hospital or whatever is replacing Gossip Girl for him. That's cool.
He and another person checked on us a few times. Neither were personable, but really enjoyed talking to each other at the "window" of the kitchen. I can't say we were struck with awe as far as service goes.
The Food -
Ordered the spaghetti and the clam chowder with a side of garlic bread. The spaghetti's sauce was bitter, if not salty. The garlic bread tasted as if it had been dragged across a salt lick. Terrible stuff. I have a feeling the garlic bread was made using garlic salt as there was no evidence of actual garlic cloves. Poor shortcut. The bread made us wince and seek out the nearest source of water. Easily the worst garlic bread I've had. You know its bad when you're left begging for that cheese toast from Sizzler...
The clam chowder was bland. I could say that my taste buds were completely fried from the garlic bread and it killed the clam chowder experience. I could say that. But I'll never know for sure since we won't be going back there. The clams in the chowder were obviously frozen... just not that good.
The presentation of the meals, though, was great. Shame hunger can't be satiated by simply staring at a meal.
The Expense -
This place is pricey and I'm not sure how it is they justify the cost.
Conclusion -
There are better ways to blow $45. On the plus side, that's one less place to try on our Honolulu list. Check!
A few of my friends and I drove into Montrose expecting a nice lunch and ended up with a wonderful brunch experience, for the most part. Â Pre-Christmas Parade 2012.
The service, while amiable, seemed overly busy for so few customers. Â I suspect it was because we came late toward the tail end of the brunch and perhaps they were preparing for the lunch and early dinner crowd. Â Never mind that, one seemed slightly irked, but, as a whole were quite attentive and the orders were fast. Â Let's move on to the food.
We all ordered the Eggs Benedict. Â The poached eggs were cooked to perfection, and the hollandaise mixed in, as it should, with the runny yolks, as we cut into the crusty but buttery English muffins with our forks and knives. Â This was sublime. Â I wanted to hop over the service wall and hug the chef. Â This wasn't a coupla fried eggs on toast with a Knorr's packet recipe hollandaise, it was something special. Paprika atop the eggs was a nice touch. Â The home fries, or Bistro Hash, as they call it, were also excellent and crisp but soft in the center, with a golden brown outside(not burnt one bit), and worked well with the ketchup that was served in a small porcelain white square dipping bowl. Â These bowls went well with the curved square white plates. Â Presentation, right?
Never mind the service, which was more than fine, but could have been friendlier, if only slightly...we will be coming back for more of the chef's fine cuisine at brunch, and at the price, you won't find a nicer, more laid-back brunch experience on a Saturday late morning/early afternoon, in Montrose.
My husband and I stopped in for a late lunch during the week. Â We had our beloved lab/golden mix Prince with us, and the waiter immediately brought him a bowl of fresh ice water and another bowl of shredded chicken breast! Â What a nice surprise! Â We ordered the green chile soup, which was fantastic, and a couple of entres from the lunch menu, I liked my grilled veggie sandwich with goat cheese. Â The food was really great, service great, nice and clean, happy pleasant staff, high quality food. Â We will go back again as soon as possible. Â Outside dining on the nice patio is necessary if you bring your doggie.
Review Source:Oh dear, I so wanted to like you better Oceanview.
We had reservations for Father's Day, were seated immediately, the place was not packed, and the service was fine.
except the food was meh.
Me-Huevos Rancheros. Fine, a bit messy
Daughter: Chicken Caesar. She asked for no extra cheese. They forgot. She has a tummy that doesnt do well with too much milk, but was hungry. The dressing was ...well, boring. Chicken was fine.
Hubby: Eggs Benedict, recommended by waitress. i know a good hollandaise. I make it. This was not it. No bite, no tang.
Son-breakfast burrito. He said "it's ok"
The real highlight was the country potatoes-crispy on outside. Downright yummy. But the rest was .... boring. Forgettable. And I had been looking to come here.
Again, service was fine. Layout cute with wood panelings and green and yellow painted walls. Â Coffee was french press and good.
Sadly we won't return.
Good Food - Lousy Service
A group of 6 met for Dinner there on Saturday.
The outside seating would have been nice, but was limited due to our group size as well as the dog people who were camped out
The food though a little pricey was very good
Salmon, Meatloaf, Cajun Pasta and Pizza Rustico were all wonderful
Our major complaint was the service
We ordered the Candied Shrimp as an Appetizer. Not only did it not come out prior to our meal. When we asked where it was after all the entrees had been delivered our waiter's response was " . . . I only put in the orders I don't cook them!" . Wow . . really . ..that set the tone for me for the rest of the night
The Candied shrimp was delicious once we finally got them
They were less than attentive in our beverage service as well. having to flag someone down for refills and having to ask initially for condiments for our unsweetened teas.
The same waiter made the excuse that they were " . . .shorthanded and the service usually isn't like this."
When we arrived it didn't appear that busy that our sever couldn't check in on a large group every once in a while
I would have wanted to stay for desert but opted to leave due to the poor service
I am writing this review solely so the owners can be aware of the front of house issues and hope for improvement in service should we ever think about returning after our uneven initial experience.
I have been coming to Oceanview for over a year.
Last week, I was given the hint that we needed to go to 'Easter Brunch'......After a few days of attempting to analyze expectations and match them with a venue.....I was left with a Google Search - "Easter Brunch La Canada California".
As soon as Oceanview came up....I knew it would be a good fit. We have dined there on a number of occasions and were always given OUTSTANDING SERVICE. (we would be checked on regularly, my water glass has always been full...- and I drink a boat load of water!).
I was able to make the reservations on line - FOR THE 12:00 Noon seating....
We arrived and 11:58 and were immediately seated (I love the way they organized things.....in multiple seating's...there was no overflow or RUSH).
There were very good selections from the buffet including the carving station (ham and London broil)......waffle station was good (even though I did splurge...everyone else seemed to enjoy..........eggs were perfect...NOT overcooked or runny!....
Bar was open.....and enjoyed! Mimosa and Jack on the Rocks! (not for me though! - I stuck to my coffee!....
Always good...I can always recommend Oceanview....enjoy!
(Dined 3/04/12 SU): No ocean view on this particular beautiful day, but after always wanting to try this place after decades of passing by it, the time finally came!
On my suggestion, my older sister wanted to celebrate her birthday with the immediate family at Oceanview Bar & Grill/Bistro. Neither of us have been here before (we both like to try new places to us), and it was located right in our neighborhood which made things even easier. We made reservations for 1:00pm through Open Table on a bustling Sunday afternoon in "Mayberry U.S.A.-esque" Montrose.
The place had a smattering of patrons inside as we waited for our party-of-eight dining arrangements to be set up. Since we had to wait longer than expected to be seated, we had a chance to look over the menu and decide what to order. They offered a weekend brunch menu which was perfect for all of us.
We were eventually seated and glasses of water were immediately delivered to us. After several minutes past, our waiter, Bradley, finally took our order. My sister and mom ordered the Sonoma Omelette (sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, asparagus - $10.95 ea.), my two nieces the 1/2 Sandwich & Bowl of Soup (Grigliata & French Onion; Grilled Cheese & Potato - $11.50 ea.), my dad the Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich w/Fries ($12.95), my brother the Chinese Chicken Salald ($11.95), my brother's friend the Eggs Benedict ($12.45), and finally I ordered the Breakfast Burrito which came with a side of homefried seasoned potatoes ($11.95).
I can't speak about everyone else's food (although all looked and smelled great), but my breakfast burrito was phat! This bad boy was a good size sucker filled with eggs, bacon (lots of bacon!), sausage, potatoes, cheddar cheese, with a side of chipotle salsa. It came cut in half exposing its innards to all at the table. Each half had some definite heft to it, and after disposing of the entire thing, it felt like a brick settling in my stomach. Needless to say, I was ready for a nap! Luckily, we had my youngest niece's basketball game right afterwards so no food coma just yet. And, since it was my sister's birthday, our waiter came out with a killer ice-cream sundae which we all gladly shared. Â
Unfortunately, the service could have been better. The place wasn't that busy at all, and no one was even occupying the area where we were seated. I can only think that they were short-handed since all I saw were the bartender, the host, our waiter, and the gentleman who initially delivered out water. And, it just seemed really long before we eventually got our food with others who were seated after us, being served before us.
Parking is ample, as there is a huge parking lot serving all the many storefronts in the area, as well as street parking everywhere. I can't recall what the parking fee is as it was free by this time/day.
Overall, Oceanview Bar & Grill/Bistro is a nice facet in the cottage community of Montrose, and my food was very good. The area is extremely safe and family-friendly. There is some value as noted by the prices I quoted above (total bill was around $100.00 before tip), but I feel the menu items can be about $1-$2 less. The service can use some work, and that is where I've dinged them the most (actual rating of 3 Â 1/2 stars). Although the atmosphere can lend itself to be more of a dressier place in the evening, it generally is very casual. And they take my credit card of choice...AMEX!
Generally good food, nice helpful wait staff. Overpriced for the location. A caution that applies to this restaurant and probably others. A group of us had dinner there on a night when the special was a fish called escolar. The waiter highly recommended it, said it was similar to sea bass but richer. The five in our party who had it loved it. However, there was no mention of the dangers of eating escolar.
This is a fish that's actually banned in Japan. In 1990 the FDA attempted to ban it in the U.S. and ended up simply advising you eat no more than 6 oz. of the fish. The problem is escolar stores fat in it's muscles, so much fat that it can sometimes be lit on fire. This fat is largely undigestible by humans and results in a range of symptoms from diarrhea and cramping, oil in one's tool to the dreaded anal leakage. Not a pleasant outcome from a very expensive dinner. I would avoid any restaurant in the future that casually serves and recommends this fish. One article I ran across called it "the world's most dangerous fish" and while that's going a bit far, anal leakage is not pleasant for anyone.
Montrose is a good middle meeting spot for a friend who lives in Monrovia. Went to this place because of the recommendations here on Yelp. Â It was quite nice with outdoor seating, which is nice if the weather is good for that.
I had the best grilled cheese sandwich ever here. It was called the Ultimate Grilled Cheese, and that it was nice. Â
They have a nice soup and 1/2 sandwich option and I was very pleased with that, as it was just enough for me. I had the split pea soup which was very good, and my friend the roasted garlic soup which I tasted and also quite good.
Homemade lemonade makes great Arnold Palmers.
It was good all the way around and will definitely come back here.
So this review is for brunch. I came with a friend of mine to catch the tail end of brunch around 2:00... they stop serving breakfast at 2:30. We sat outside with about 5 other people.
I couldn't resist getting their special: pulled pork benedict on cornbread. It was DELISH! The whole dish came with two cornbread squares, plenty of pork, and a generous helping of hollandaise. It was super filling and i could only finish one. I might even consider sharing this with a friend. The side of potatoes was also great.
My friend ordered a bloody mary and although i'm not a huge fan, it was actually good enough that i ordered one for myself! I also had a regular coffee that came with the french press brought to my table. I loved not having to find the waiter every time I wanted some more coffee. Smart thinking Oceanview!
The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is the breakfast sandwich my friend ordered. Don't get me wrong, it was good, and for once a restaurant didn't skimp on the avocado, but it's sort of a basic dish considering the price.
Over all, as long as the pork breakfast special is on the menu, i'll definitely be back.
This review is primarily about how we as a family were treated at Oceanview Bistro rather than the food.
Several days ago my wife, mother, infant daughter and I decided to finally try Oceanview Bistro for lunch. We asked the waiter outside what table we could take and we sat towards the end - farthest from the door. There were two other groups closest to the door and seeing as we had our baby with us we decided to sit farther away just in case she became fussy.
As the waiter handed us our menus, an older gentleman sat at the table directly across from us and maybe four feet from our daughter. He then proceeded to immediately light up a cigarette. I asked him if he wouldn't mind not smoking - especially since he was so close to our child. He immediately became snotty and refused to put it out. I flagged the waiter and asked him if they actually allowed smoking out here. He replied yes as it is part of LA county. Glendale's no smoking laws did not apply here even though they did just down the street. We told the waiter we could not sit out here while this man was (at that point seemingly) purposefully blowing his smoke in the direction of our daughter.
Now, this is where the frustration and yes - anger - towards Oceanview Bistro began. In NO way was the rudeness and obnoxiousness of this "gentleman" their fault. I need to make that clear here. I do not blame the restaurant for the actions of one individual - and nor should I. What we were frustrated with was the fact that the waiter did not show any concern over our situation and did not even try to help us out in any way. He did not offer us a seat inside nor did he offer to move us away from this person. He just stood there uncaring. So we left and will not return.
If a restaurant has the legal right to permit their patrons to smoke, then that is their prerogative. I am not attempting to tell Oceanview Bistro how to run their business. What I am frustrated with is how their staff did not care to even attempt to rectify a rapidly deteriorating situation.
I love this place! Â It's become part of my birthday celebration with my son...dinner and a movie. Â The UA theater is a few blocks away so it's a perfect combination. Â The place has an intimate yet vibrant section, a full-on piano bar and outdoor patio seating with those great little white lights adorning the area. Â Since my b-day is coming up, I'm hoping for a warm evening to sit outside and relish the silver bowl filled with steamed baby clams with 3 sauces for dipping and an incredible broth, maybe the baked artichoke hearts in rich creamy cheeses, a shrimp cocktail (I LOVE appetizers) but the dinners are big, diverse and there are amazing chef specials every night. Â
Lots of free parking on Florencita which is the back public parking to the charming outdoor Montrose Shopping Mall....a great stretch of lit up shops - a great place to walk off a meal and grab some marvelous coffees just a block away. Not really a family restaurant but I recommend this place for friends and lovers...always a great time and wonderful food!
Actually, maybe 2.5 stars with the experience that I had.
There was no wait at all when my boyfriend and I came here, so we waited a little bit to get seated. We got seated at a booth that had broken-ish seats, since it made noise every time we moved and such, but it didn't bother us all that much.
The server seemed all over the place, as if he was very nervous or on something, but I doubt that, haha. We got our menus and had time to look it over, and he came back a few times to bring us a different thing each time, such as water or a fork or a knife, etc. When we were ready to order, the server was very casual and said things like, "OH yeah, we don't have this item and this thing. Sorry," etc etc. Then he mentioned the specials for the night.
Anyways, we ordered the spring rolls, the Crispy Atlantic Salmon (with potatoes beaujolais, corn, english peas, burrata emulsion), and the Hanger Steak (with truffle fries, shallot-port reduction). The spring rolls were difficult to eat in once piece, since the insides would fall easily, but they were tasty and very nice looking for spring rolls. The salmon was good, but everything else that came with the salmon was overly salty. The steak was good, but the fries seemed as if they were regular fries, say... from BJs or somewhere.
We actually went here because we had a gift certificate, but if I were to pay for the food and service based solely on that one experience, I probably wouldn't choose to come back, unless it was a semi-special occasion, pregnancy cravings, or if I wanted to spend a bunch of money to give this place another try.
Don't get me wrong though... it was a nice place and I'm sure the servers are much better any other night, but not the type of place for me.
The food was pretty good, but it was expensive.
I don't have any serious problems, and I may end up going back there sometime, but here are a couple of reasons why I wouldn't quite give it 4 or 5 stars:
1) There are a number of other places I like better around Honolulu (like Sake and 3 drunken goats)
2) The atmosphere seemed kind of weird to me. Â There were some high class elements (like art for sale on the walls and other relatively nice decor), but some other things that didn't quite match in my book (for example, the crayons that are provided to draw on the table).
3) I am in my twenties and I think this is targeted for a older audience (middle aged adults and senior citizens).
4) As I mentioned in the beginning, I think the food was little more than I though it should be. Â However, I should confess that I had a Groupon (so, the cost to me was probably pretty reasonable on that particular visit).
That said, I do think this is an OK restaurant, and I would recommend stopping by at least once if you live around the area and it looks like it might be your kind of thing.
For New Year's Eve, my fiance and I were celebrating our recent wedding engagement. Â We made the reservation through Open Table and mentioned the special event in the comments section. Â We planned a 5:30pm dinner prior to later events that evening. Â I received calls over two days from a gentleman at Oceanview confirming the time and offering to buy us a round of drinks for our special meal. Â Â At the time, I thought that the people at Oceanview were really on the ball and we would have a wonderful evening.
We were seated right away, as the place was empty. Â We showed a http://Restaurant.com $50 discount certificate to the waitress and she came back to inform us that her manager said it was not valid because of the holiday. Â I pointed out that there was no such restriction on the form. Â
Her gruff, old lady, manager came to our table and said the discount was not valid for prix fixe, which was the only thing offered that night at about $120/couple. Â We were well aware of the menu beforehand and pointed out that the certificate had nothing on it regarding restrictions for prix fixe. Â She said that it didn't matter, it was a holiday. Â Once again, I mentioned there was not a holiday restriction was on the certificate. Â
I asked if she was going to continue to make things up as she went along, just to avoid honoring the certificate. Â In response, she said that since we made the reservation through Open Table and they had to pay for that, she didn't have to honor the http://Restaurant.com certificate. Â WHAT BULLSHIT! Â
She went on to loudly & emphatically state that if I had BOTHERED to read the Open Table website restrictions I would have seen that it is plainly written there. Â I asked what connection the two independent companies had to do with honoring the certificate. Â She huffed & puffed and then said "just this time, but I will take this up with Open Table."
The evening was ruined by the bipolar behavior of the manager of the restaurant and the clearly insane blaming of Open Table for the use of a http://Restaurant.com certificate. Â I have since read all the fine print from both companies' websites and cannot find where any of this should have caused the conflict that was so apparent to the establishment's hag.
I do not appreciate receiving a condescending, officious rebuke because I used Open Table. If there was a way to rate this event more negative, I would. Surprise! no free round of drinks! Â
I contacted http://Restaurant.com and told them of the shitty reception their coupon got. Â They immediately, provided me with another $50 certificate. Â http://Restaurant.com are really cool and I use them without hesitation.
I wrote to Open Table telling them all about the problem with no response received. Eff them. Â When I see places that use Open Table for their reservations, I avoid the establishment or call for reservations. Â Eff Open Table.
We won't use Open Table or Oceanview Bistro, again.

After a decent interval --- three days --- went back with Mr. Picky, the spouse, to see if the food really was as good as I'd remembered from my first visit. I'm giving it a 5 again because the food was so good (although we had to work a little to get it there) that it caused my spouse to lose all sense of his manners. Â Discovering the great fish and chips was not available (wrong time of day, on "the bar menu" and something I never did understand despite the great waitress Crystal explaining it a couple times), we decided to try other things.
We started by sharing the house salad which comes with a red wine mustard vinaigrette. For those who like the European lightly dressed approach, this would have been perfect. However, he asked for more vinaigrette, and --- remembering my friend's sauce for dipping her sweet potato fries --- I asked for ranch. Now, I normally HATE ranch dressing, but their version is wonderful. Mixing that with the vinaigrette on my plate worked out nicely (although we thought the salad was a little heavy-handed with what tasted like fresh basil out of my garden).
Now came the pasta dishes. Despite it being a late lunch, they allowed my husband to order off the dinner menu and he selected the Shrimp Scampi with shallots, tomato and mushroom in a Chardonnay-Dijon Cream sauce. Quite, quite lovely, good enough that he had to curb any selfishness in allowing me to take a few bites of his food.
I tried the stroganoff on Penne pasta. The first bite was a little disappointing and when he looked across the table and tried a bite, he said, "no way, have them bring you more sauce." They were very gracious about providing more of the stroganoff sauce and just warned me it would take a few minutes as they had to prepare it from scratch. So I waited, worth it, because a generous side of the stroganoff sauce arrived which when poured over the penne and filet was fantastic!!! They do themselves a massive disservice not drowning their pasta in this ambrosia. The husband loved it and I had to teach him the "Penne Shuffle," that special move diners know where you slide a fork tine into the penne, then slide the penne through the sauce so it all gets inside, and then you horizontally place it into the mouth so nothing will run out and you end up with a bite of moist deliciousness. Oh my word, absolutely wonderful. I didn't care about the beef in the dish, they could have kept it in the kitchen for all I cared, but the stroganoff sauce was yummy. I had a little sauce left when the pasta was all finished and the husband reached over, grabbed my plate, said "No point wasting that," looked around to make sure nobody was looking, and then (not having a spoon available) put his lips to the dish edge and slurped it up. Honest, he did. That's a "5" rating.
Service - 4.5
Caprese Salad - 5
Stroganoff - 3
Shrimp and Scallop pasta - 4.5
Ambiance - 3
I was very pleased with the service, and the quality of the food. The booths however are forest green vinyl with oak accents. A bit dated, not exactly a modern bistro feel. The chef clearly knows his way around a kitchen, the scallops were cooked perfectly and the deep fried basil on the caprese salad was an unexpected touch.
Oceanview is a true 3.5, but there wasn't enough for me to justify a four star. It is a quaint spot to take your folks for dinner.
Oceanview Bistro does not try to be anything its not, but they hit the neighborhood bistro theme perfectly with a wonderful combination of casual attitude and good food.
I've been a handful of times and never leave disappointed. More than that, they always impress in ways I am not expecting.
I feel bad that they are just a little off the beaten path, but don't let that fool you. They are spot on in the most important category - food. Â
This latest trip was inspired by a breakfast. Spontaneously, I ordered the chicken crepes and my wife, the french toast. Also served to the table was some pastrami eggs and a breakfast sandwich. Oh, and my bloody mary.
Solid food, quaint atmosphere, good times.
I've been here a few times for brunch and dinner. Everything on the menu is delicious (and I've sampled a lot).
It's a great place to get a casual drink and a small bite at the bar on a Friday night, a classy option for a special dinner or brunch or a place to bring the in-laws (like I did). They also have room for small parties in the back.
Alice and her team are extremely hospitable! Montrose is lucky to have such a great dining option in the area. Go often and SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES!
I have lived in Montrose for almost 20 years and tonight would be the first time I have eaten here for my brother's birthday. It was nice getting some local bistro. The food was pretty good. The pizza is good. I got the ribs and thought they were tasty. I got the soup de jour which was Tomato Bisque. Easily, the BEST tomato soup I have ever had. I would probably come back here just for that. If i were to go to another formal place for dinner I wouldn't come here because there are better options in Pasadena and Glendale but I would recommend it if you want to stay local. Just to be a downer, even though we had a large group, it took a little longer then I would of liked for the food to come. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and go with 4 stars.
Review Source:Great little place in Montrose. The owner and bartender are very personable, and the service is impeccable. Then there's the food... great menu with a little bit of everything on it, good wine selection, and an AMAZING chocolate souffle that makes you want to cry. I'd also highly recommend the spinach salad (which can be shared between two as a started or eaten as an entree), and the flatbread pizza.
Other perks - parking is easy to find, it's not terribly crowded, they have a cheap happy hour menu and good space around the bar for a quick meal, and did I mention the AMAZING chocolate souffle?
I stumbled upon this restaurant through the Dine LA Restaurant listing and thought I would give it a try with a friend and I was not disappointed. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the owner, who was sitting at a quaint table in the corner, reading a book with a glass of wine. She was very welcoming, attentive and made me feel right at home. The restaurant had a nice outdoor patio (which would be great on a nice day) and I opted to dine outside given the nice weather.
The menu was relatively small, but offered a good amount of variety for the right price. Although I thought the Pr ix Fix menu was just something special for Restaurant Week, it appeared as if it is offered on a daily basis. My friend ordered the spare ribs with potatoes and Gorgonzola and I opted for the tiger prawns, vegetable risotto in a lobster emulsion. The food was very flavorful and tender. The risotto was slightly under cooked; however, the lobster flavoring was a perfect touch to balance out of the flavors. We also ordered chocolate molten cake. I was slightly disappointed that it was not oozing with chocolate - however, the cake was served warm with a side of ice cream and it was the perfect end to a good meal.
The service was great. Our Waiter was very attentive and accommodating. Overall, this was a great experience and I look forward to coming back for breakfast.
Happy Hour 4-6 PM Tuesday through Sunday - It is great! Â Parking was bliss, lots of available parking in the lot and on the street.
This is a Montrose local location for 30 somethin's and up. Â The Cabernet was delicious and well-priced for $4/glass.
The menu is original and delightfully well-priced. Â we ordered a chicken Thai wrap, and the wrap could be carbo or lettuce. $5.00, We went for lettuce and the chicken was very good.
I also got this really tasty pizza... not your ordinary fast food pizza, this pizza ROCKED! and my 15 yr old loved it too! His favorite was the pot-stickers, YUM! they were so good, but he would not let me eat his.
Happy hour was Great. Â They have a fabulous chef who really gets California bistro cuisine, and has an amazing way with spices, fresh tastes, and a creative flair. Â And the wine was delicious.
Very pleasantly surprised! Â Inviting atmosphere in kind of a dead zone for fine food if you ask me. Â It was my dad's birthday and the service was attentive, no waiting for anything. Â
Started off with the Caesar, wonderfully different. Â They add a soft-poached egg and it wasn't too heavy on their dressing. Â It was great! Â
Next I went with their Tiger Prawns and risotto - fantastic. Â Served hot, right off the stove, with a few veggies on top. Â Really nice. Â Firm shrimp (7) and a light sauce. I order it again for sure. Â
Finished with home-made vanilla bean ice cream and strawberries in a chilled martini glass. Â With a little dark chocolate - like I made it myself! Nice.
Then a french press of really good coffee - just like in Europe.
I am a particular person, and this place nailed it. Â And not too expensive either. Â $65 for 2 with no drinks, before gratuity. Â Check it out.
Terrible For Brunch
Terrible For Food
Terrible For Service
The Food
* Eggs Benedict was terrible: The Hollandaise cracked and the English muffins must have been suntanning under the heat lamp (and so was the sourdough).
* Terribly bland breakfast potatoes - the salt shaker was nowhere to be found
* They ran out of salmon hash but still charged us for it
The Service
* Even though the restaurant wasn't too busy, the staff was running around like headless chickens
* After 28 minutes of waiting for our food, I politely complained to the manager
* The manager nicely offered a second round of mimosas (this time, on the house)
* The food came after a total of 34-36 minutes
* There were more staff members than patrons yet where was the service
* To rub it in that we weren't welcomed, they charged us for a salmon hash
Look, I'm not going to pretend I'm so avant-garde Le Cordon Bleu chef because you know what, I'm not. But at the same time, I can tell a terrible Eggs Benedict from a good one. For one thing, don't serve English muffins that are as hard as my fingernails.
I've been coming here with my mom for brunch these past few Sundays and we really enjoy it. I usually order this Salmon Egg Benedict dish. I was amazed how well it went together. They have pressed coffee as well that just makes my mouth water when I think about it. The environment is friendly, clean and peaceful. They have this wonderful guitarist play live music for you while you enjoy your brunch. It is just a very nice place to eat.
Review Source:Getting kicked out of bars with your infant is no fun. Â So we've gone in search of restaurant happy hours. Â It's not really because we are alcoholics. Â It's because we're too poor to eat out anymore, but restaurant happy hours allow us to chow down on cheaper eats, AND get a little brew, all while toting a smiling baby on our laps. Â Restaurants can serve drinks in front of the little ones.
So Oceanview was a driveby. Â It said "Happy Hour 4-6 PM Tuesday through Sunday." Â We squeeled over to the nearest parking spot. Â This is Montrose. Â There were parking spots available upfront.
This is a Montrose local spot, mostly 40 somethin's and up, less diverse than our normal 'hoods, but hey, they probably like good wine here. Â So we order up the house cab, with $2 happy hour discount - it was delicious and well-priced for $4/glass.
It took us a while to get the bar menu, but it was delightfully well-priced. Â We got two items, both of which were amazingly yummy! Â A Thai wrap that came with chicken or beef, and the wrap could be carbo or lettuce. ($5) We went for lettuce and the chicken was very good, but not spicey enough according to gf. Â She requested something spicey. Â No tabasco came her way, but instead a delicious soy/ginger/chili thing that the chef cooked up on the spot at her request. Â The result were Thai Chicken lettuce wraps that rocked the house.
I got the vegetarian rice paper not fried rolls - full of veggies and sesame and a little orangey something. Â They were delightful, fresh, and surprisingly original tasting. ($4.50)
Our depression-era budget would not tolerate a real meal here with many dishes starting at 20+ bucks (thus the ding down from 5 stars), but happy hour was a total delight. But scanning the menu, I'd love to taste any of it. Â We believe they have a genius chef in the back who really gets California bistro cuisine, and has an amazing way with spices, fresh tastes, and a creative flair. Â And the wine was delicious.
Hey, Montrose ain't far from the 'Dena, and you'll probably see us back there soon.
My friends and I stumbled upon this place, and left feeling very satisfied with our lunch. Everything on the menu sounded amazing. I ordered the fish tacos, and they were amazing. Everything is fresh and homemade, and the chefs pay attention to the little details. I liked how the flour tortillas were grilled. The fish was grilled perfectly, and it came with a side of homemade gauc and chipotle salsa. It was awesome! My friend Deanne ordered the turkey meatloaf sandwich, which was huge and delicious. I definitely want to come back here with my mom. It's a little pricey, but I think worth it. I also want to come here for dinner. The menu looked delicious. If you're in montrose, skip the popular Rocky Cola Cafe or any little restaurants on Honolulu and go to Oceanview!
