RACIST RACIST RACIST AGANIST AFRICAN AMERICANS!! I traveled all the way from Atlanta GA for a surprised Birthday Party. My companion and I ( 54 YEARS OLD) was turned around for a tigher print shirt and I had on leggins. Once we walked to our cars we notice 2 white women approaching the club in a Zebra print blouse and her friend in white leggins. Both white women were let in the club!!! RACIST!!!!!
DO NOT GO TO THIS CLUB AND SUPPORT THIS RACIST ENVIRONMENT! To make matters worst it was the same day Zimmerman was pronouncedd innocent!!! SMH!!!
Oh man this place is interesting.
So this essentially is one of the only "big" clubs in Richmond now.
It has 2 levels. Bottom floor is salsa and latin music. A bit less crowded, and heavily populated by the hispanic population. I REALLY enjoyed that it wasn't crowded and was a reprieve from the clutter on the main floor. There were also tons of seats and a non-crowded bar.
The main/entry floor was weird.
It's too cluttered, and the girls I went with constantly felt creeped on by all the dudes there. So many dudes. Everyone seemed to be having a good time though.
- The dance floor is poorly designed, there are essentially two areas separated by a tiny little corridor which all the sweaty people have to slide by to get through to the bathroom and stuff. Awkward.
-Demographic is all over the place here... which is great but weird at the same time.
- VIP section seemed dumb. Not sure why you would get it here. Essentially it's just areas with  rope sectioned up one step with a few chairs. Would not pay for this.
As for music... they essentially spun top 40 hip-hop... and then random house tracks... and then some dubstep? It didn't make any sense and was kind of all over the place? It would go from lil' jon and shots shots shots shots to Kaskade. What? Also the DJ poorly matched beats. Dislike. I would not spin dubstep at a non-dubstep concert. I don't think people can even dance to that.
The guy in the mens bathroom was constantly griping for tips. Screw that. Needs to expect nothing and be grateful to get my money for flipping the water switch.
Would give this place 2/5 stars but I like that you can get a hookah and smoke it at the bar and I really enjoyed the vibe downstairs. +1 = 3/5 overall
tl;dr - not bad
Richmond finally has a decent trashy club, Hallelujah! I went to Off the Hookah with a date who wanted to dance and had been there before. I used the valet which was pretty convenient and was I think 5 bucks. It was close to 1230 or 1 and we got through the doors fairly easy. The inside of the club was packed and the bar was as well. My dates drink was alright and the music was loud but hey they actually made an effort with an appropriate sized dance floor. The inside was packed with scandalously clad women of varying appeal, go go dancers, halter tops, and plenty of drunk looking spectacles (the only reason to be sober in a club). We danced till last call and when it was time to go we hit the door and my car was there in less than 15. A great night all told.
This place is a trip and if you havent been you definitely need to. The inside is decorated like the inside of a Pharaoh's dorm room with cheap Ikea sarcophogi, sphinx, and plush velvet couches at Ra know's what price per night. Still though the DJ was good that night and for Richmond this place is a god send after the travesty of Have a nice day. It's safe, they have decent security, plenty of good looking women
(alot of them single) and the booze isnt watered down although I don't know how bad they charge for it. If you're looking for a night out with a girl or guy and want to see if he or she can dance better than half of Richmond, hit this place up.
Do NOT wear animal print clothing or be a BLACK person. This place discriminates against you if you are either or! I have never been to an establishment that uses "animal print" clothing as a reason to not let someone to enter. When did "animal print" become a problem? Especially when someone WHITE left the establishment with an "animal print" shirt. As a person who is from Richmond and was visiting from California this is how we are treated. DO NOT support this establishment unless you want to go back in time to slavery!
Review Source:You ever walk into a club or bar and you notice the venue serves different kinds of crowds depending on the music? Off The Hookah keeps it fresh by having a great DJ keeping the place amped with all kinds of music that all mesh very well together, in which all kinds of people can enjoy and have a great time. Some say it's kind of upscale, but it feels a lot better than being in a place where the people seem sketchy.
OTH has two bars: one on the first floor where it's more relaxed and good to chill back, and on the second and main floor where the real party is. It features a very large bar with bartenders who can make drinks spot on! Once in a while they'll flip drinks and whatnot to add to the whole experience.
The main floor can get quite crowded, so you'll be squeezing through to get to a certain spot on the floor depending on what suits your taste. However since the place is quite spacious, it's hard for you to find a spot where you can't have some space for you or your people. For those of you who party hard, there's plenty of dancing going on to get you in the hyped-up mood you're looking for. What also adds to this are the go-go dancers that are up behind the bar and other various spots around the club.
One of the best points from this place for me is the hookah they offer here. It's actually quite hard to find an upscale club that also has hookahs in Virginia. Here not only do they have hookahs but they are the best tasting hookahs I've had in Virginia, and that's saying a lot having been in the Hampton Roads area and Northern Virginia. The only downside to this is unless you reserved a special spot in the club, you'll be smoking it at the bar which can obviously get crowded. Yet again, people are pretty respectful to getting close enough to be able to smoke it.
The absolute best thing about the place is the music here. It's always fresh. Not sure who the DJ is here, but the music included some house, dubstep, hip hop, flashback joints we all forgot about but gets you feeling right at home. It beats hearing a playlist of the typical top songs we've already heard for the umptillionth time. The consequence is that you get a nice range of people including Asian people, Black people, White people, and Hispanic people all there just having a great time.
Overall if you're looking for a spot that pretty much has everything and you have a group of people who all want to go to different spots, OTH bridges that gap by meeting in the middle where everyone can enjoy a Saturday night.
I have really tried to enjoy this place- but it always PACKED. Very hard to move around upstairs as everyone is dancing and standing around. I paid to valet ($5) since parking is horrible around the canal walk. Downstairs is not too bad- not crowded and not nearly as loud as upstairs and there is no line at the ladies' bathroom. You can smoke the hookah, but to do so, you must order it at the bar. Upstairs does have a patio as well  but it does not have seating.
The upstairs bar boasts stripper-like dancers on the back of the bar and the bartenders at various time do bartending tricks to please the crowds. The typical guys that go there are less than impressive-and attempt to grab you inappropriately.
I really do like the decor- mix of egyptian and indian inspriation- it really does prove to be a fun looking place. I hear that the patio is great for eating/happy hour drinks, however the night life gives me a few complaints.
I went to Off the Hookah for the first time this Thursday, which was Ladies Night. Â I found out that it was Ladies Night because I was tweeting the OtH Twitter account, whoever was doing it was a timely responder and very awesome. Â We came here from Blackfinn because Blackfinn was just empty, and once we got to Off the Hookah we knew why. Â It was about a 10 minute wait outside to get in, but once we did it was pretty awesome, I won't lie. Â It reminded me of a huge rave, but a b it classier.
The decor was mostly Egyptian and Indian and downstairs is very classy looking, with a huge Buddha statue to top it all off. Â The DJ was pretty awesome , he did a very good job of mixing things in and keeping the crowd on their toes. Â The crowd was alwayyyyys jumping. Â I think the only trashy thing was the girls they had payed to dance on the bar. Â They were really trashy looking (bra and tight black shorts), and didn't add to the flavor of the bar at all in my opinion, especially since their "theme" is "dress to impress". Â They weren't impressive at all. Â
There's so many security officers around, and I only saw one altercation that was quickly broken up. Â However, the few bad things:
1. Once it started getting closer to closing time, the guys seem to become way more douchebags. Â I was with 2 other girls, and we were sorta dancing together because we didn't really want to dance with any guys. Â One guy came over and was dancing on me, and I dunno I guess he took it as an invitation to put his hand down my pants and up my shirt, which IMO is a no-no. Â I'm sure some other girls there wouldn't have minded, but I like to keep a bit of class amongst myself. Â So I quickly told him no thank you and moved away. Â Thankfully he didn't pursue, which was great. Â
2. My friend had a less understanding pursuer. Â He was trying to pull her pants down, he was trying to finger her, and she just kept pushing him away and he was also attempting to make out with him. Â I finally had to get in the middle, tell him if he didn't back up I'd get security. Â He called me a bitch, but backed off. Â
3. It was during this time that someone decided to, I suppose take advantage of the situation and take a phone out of my back pocket. Â Now I generally NEVER keep things in my back pocket because I'm quite aware how easy it is to steal something. Â However, my friend was really drunk and kept dropping her phone so I took it because I didn't want to her get it stepped on. I couldn't find the guy who did it and neither could security. Â After the place was closing down, I went up to the Customer Service booth to give a description, there were at least 5 other girls there who got their Credit Cards & Phones stolen as well. Â So BE WARNED HOOKAH GOERS. Â There's a thief in the building. Â
A good thing was that I got served -really- quick for it being so crowded upstairs. Â I waited maybe a total of five minutes, if that, to get three beers and the guy was super nice (I heard his name was Kai from bathroom chatter, but not sure if that's true or not). Â Either way, upstairs right bar was amazing service. Â
TLDR: Be safe at Hookah, nice place but people are rude and thieving. People suck. Â However, I do want to say I met more nice people then rude douchebags. Â Also, the mixture of ethnicity in this place is def. a plus. Â People from all walks of life seem to come here.
This place is huge. Seriously huge. I'm know a lot more happens here besides drinking and hookah. I mean, it's a big complex.
The hookah itself was great (lemon-mint flavor), and it lasted for about an hour and a half without getting harsh. The servers were attentive and friendly, and the happy hour drinks are cheap, cheap, cheap. (I think it was $2 domestics, $3 wells, & $4 wine.) While the decor was a bit over-the-top with the Asian-influenced doors and the giant Buddha, it seems like a great venue for large groups or intimate gatherings.
I went here with a large group on a Wednesday night, and who knew that Richmond had such a fun venue. The venue is huge, there is a bottom level (I think that is the dining area), the main floor with two bars (in between is where you can dance) and another section with tables (near the restrooms), and a top level where the DJ plays and some more tables. On Wednesdays, there are $2 wells drinks and also hookah (I believe it was $20, lots of flavors and very smooth).
Overall, I had a great night, the venue, music, and the people I went to all contributed to that so will see how the second round goes if I ever come back.
3.5 stars. This review is for brunch (yes brunch!) at Off the Hookah. Went last Saturday with two friends and enjoyed brunch on their Canal Walk patio. I had the red velvet pancakes with hash browns. Â The pancakes themselves weren't sweetened which would have made them better in my book but mixed with the icing syrup drizzled on them they were quite tasty. I requested cheddar to be added to hash browns which they did gladly but these are more like home fries than hash browns. The service was attentive and friendly and the location is great. It was fun to watch canal boats, tourists, and Ravenchase scavenger hunt contestants running by. 3 stars for the food. 4 for ambiance and service.
Review Source:Hookah was way overpriced, even though it was a nice clean smoke. I was told I couldn't wear regular tennis shoes with a nice shirt and jeans. I had to wear Sperrys or some other type of boat shoe. Complete BS, but I was "let in" because it was a Thursday night. They gladly took my $5 cover for being a male as well. Not a fan of overpriced  hookah, drinks and covers. Nothing special there and I will not be returning.
Review Source:Just ate at Off the Hookah for the first time; a perfectly serviceable spicy tuna roll (a little more tuna would have been preferable, but the togarashi garnish was a nice touch), a slightly overcooked piece of conch (but nice and sweet), and some salmon roe almost past it's prime. The price on the rolls are reasonable, the a la carte could be priced a dollar or two more for two pieces per order. Overall? I'd say if you're in the area and fiending for sushi, it will scratch your itch. I ate outside, and the entertainment was laughable (acoustic Journey covers), but the service was good (full disclosure, the bartender is a personal friend). A completely middle-of-the-road experience, but sitting outside by the canal is nice, so I'm giving an extra star for atmosphere.
Review Source:Boyfriend and I stumbled upon the canal-overlooking patio while exploring the area when we first got to Richmond and just HAD to go here one night since we love hookah. Â We were a little turned off by some of the earlier reviews, but braved the place anyway after dinner on sunday since it is right around the corner from the hotel.
That said, I really liked the place and didn't find it or the clientele to be pretentious or snooty at all. Â The hookah is a little overpriced, but it was also incredibly smooth. Â We got banana and raspberry flavored through the night, and I had no complants about either. Â The beers were cheap at least, and we had several of those. Â The decor was interesting, and the bar was large and we never felt overcrowded sitting there. Â The bartender was very friendly.
All in all, a fine place. Â We were there on a Sunday so probably thats why we missed the "clubbing" people, and it was a very nice and relaxing night.
Off the Hookah nowadays is pricey, packed, and pretentious looking. It's the 3rd one in the "Off the Hookah" franchise which comes from Miami FL where this style of club is more common. What it brings to Richmond is fancy professional decor mixed with the ability get the mild relaxation of a hookah and the inebriation of alcohol at the same time in a club atmosphere and some flashy bartender tricks and generic sounding techno/club music.
In terms of uniqueness the decor is mostly ancient Egyptian themed and is looks quite beautiful when the club is empty. On a crowded night you won't notice any of it behind the bustling crowd of people standing everywhere. It'll be so crowded that it'll feel like a traffic jam trying to go from one side of the club to the other. The prices are pretty high, it's around $24 for a hookah at the bar, but if you're willing to fork over the cash for it and the watered down drinks you'll find yourself being entertained by the bartender's bottle juggling and the hot young women strategically placed at 3 dancing positions to give the place the feel of an "awesome good time".
The ebb and flow of people on a busy night are as follows: before 11pm it's mostly women, after 11pm get ready for the sausage fest! This is because of their entry policy. In front of the club there are two lines one for regular patrons on the right and one for hot girls on the left. In the beginning of the night they let hot girls in unabashedly but finally around 11 pm enough men have trickled in through the regular line where the hot girls start leaving because they are presumably tired of being ground upon (past-tense of "big booty grinding").
So kinda stumbled upon this one Thursday night(which was ladies night back in January). Â The decor is quite swanky and upscale. Â On the night I went, it was a night of prettiness and style. Â Very much international crowd. Â The attire for girls seemed to be how I've heard club attire is in DC: which is minimum 3 to 4 inch heels and dresses so short that don't allow you to sit down. Â The music was starting to pick up before we left and had a nice techno club feel, something that is rare in Richmond. Â
Also free hookah for ladies on ladies night(which now I believe is on Wednesday); normally this would be between $15-$25. Â $5 martinis also, but there was some serious watering down on the drinks.
My friend went back with her boyfriend on Friday night around 830 or 9 and had lots of tapas, which she said was quite yummy. Â But again, watered down drinks and recommendation was to only drink beer. Â She did say when they left around 1030, there was a line down the hall and down the block. Â
So cool music and decor, but if not into watered down drinks and lines, might not be great place. Â Dress to impress however, no casual wear allowed.
Went there last night with a large group of friends to celebrate. Â My husband and I were dancing out on the floor, which is what we'd been doing the entire night, when a bouncer came up to my husband and told him he had to leave for punching a bartender....what?!? Â My husband told the guy he must be mistaken, etc. Â Nope. Â Bouncer wasn't having any of it. Â When I stepped in to explain that my husband had been with me and the 10 other people we were with all night long, the bouncer got hostile with me and threatened to have me arrested. Â Needless to say, we left. Â I was angry and let the bouncer know I was angry once I was outside the club and he tried to get the cops out front to arrest me. Â They left me alone, and in fact, were very nice to both me and my husband, and our friends, who decided to leave since their nights were also ruined by the incident. Â I'm guessing those cops see this kind of ignorant behavior from the bouncers there on a pretty regular basis.
Bottom line: none of us will be going back there. Â Terrible place and it's only a matter of time before it gets shut down.
Was here Fri night for dinner and dancing... we had dinner downstairs around 9pm, and it was very good- fresh sushi served by a super nice waitress. Â They only had one sushi chef so the food was a little slow
coming out, but otherwise it was awesome.
The music down in that room was ok, but not great... they had a DJ but he was playing kind of random stuff, and there weren't a ton of people down there yet so noone was dancing.
We then went upstairs to the hookah lounge where it was PACKED with people- lots of preppy college-aged people who looked like they took the bottom bus from U of R.
And the music wasn't great- all techno mixes of random songs such as the ever popular "like a virgin".
I'd go back on a weeknight to smoke hookah for sure, or for dinner anytime, but I wouldn't go back to dance.
Went here last saturday night for a birthday party. Â It was a group of 16 of us and we made reservations.
When we were seated around 8:45, we were taken downstairs to the dining area and were seated at four tables that some were round and the others were sqaure, kind of like they just slammed some random tables together so we could all fit.
Our waitress was awesome. Â She was friendly, knew the menu, and was happy to be serving us. Â She even offered to split the checks for us and did not autograt us, either way she was very well taken care of by the table.
Most of the table ordered tapas, many ordered the sliders and the few who had them said they were worth it. Â I ordered the lollypop lamb chops, with truffle scalloped potatoes and a pear mint chutney. Â The lamb was good although it probably should have been lightly seasoned before it was cooked...and I wish that I had been asked how I liked it cooked....
There was not even a hint of the truffle scalloped potatoes but I ate them anyways because I was hungry.
Overall, the dining experience was ok, I probably won't go back because of the scene. Â The place seems like an upscale "have a nice day cafe" and the night club scene isn't for me when i'm used to stumbling around at the fan bars on the weekends.
On a side note, the Hookahs were $20 and $25, I wasn't able to order one down in the dining area but we almost did...I was not aware that it was $5 extra per person after two people. Â That's rediculous.
I hope this place is able to stay in that area longer than most of the previous tenants.
take care & savor it up!
When we walked in, I was warned to not wear tennis shoes next time. Really? That's how we're going to do it?
I have no idea how this place got all that cash for fancy decor and a really big space. It's fairly pretentious and expensive. A hookah costs $25 and $5 per person extra after two people. I would call it a "lounge" before a regular hookah bar. I don't think it will last more than a few months.
The service was pretty good - keep that legend brown rolling....
Don't leave without trying the baba ghanoush. I'd baba anyone's ghanoush for something that tastes this good (just kidding).
