I want to give this place a higher review--really, I do. BUT the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. I am sorry, but...$9.00 for a beer is just ridiculous--especially for just a regular beer (not high alcohol content or something super special). I think $5-6 is more reasonable and what you are going to find elsewhere.
I live close by and go to Fabs instead because they have better prices (including a happy hour from 5-9pm) and they have craft beers for REASONABLE prices. Also--One The Thirty is ALWAYS out of like 1/2 of their beers. Super disappointing. I have been 4-5 times and this is always my experience. Have not been in a while because I am really just appalled by the prices. It is over the top.
Lower your prices and you will get more consistent customers who will recommend the place. There are too many options close by (Madd Bulls, Spitting Chicken, Fabs, Local Peasant) that all serve beer for much cheaper. I'd rather save the money and go elsewhere.
The food is also over priced. But I am more concerned with $9.00 beer prices, really.
The food is pretty good here, if a little overpriced. Â Lots of drink selections and has a bar/gastro pub environment. Â I may go back to check out the live music they have at night. Â I had one of the pizzas and it was quite good. Â Kind of a fun place to go with friends. Â There are big TVs playing sports so it's a little loud.
Review Source:Let me start this review off by saying that I have never had a waitress roll her eyes at me. And all I did was ask for ketchup for my turkey sliders.
The experience with this place was pretty awful from start to finish and my friend and I ended up across the street at a place that was the polar opposite.
We got off to a bad start when we requested to sit outside (late on a Saturday afternoon) and the hostess said we only had an hour because a large party was coming in. No biggies; we intended to get a drink and a snack and run.
After a bait and switch on wine pricing on the menu; a pizza order that still had not arrived 45 minutes into our hour "time limit", and not one but two sullen waitresses who inexplicably tag-teamed us with awful attitudes (my friend suspected a bit of racial profiling but I was trying to give the place the benefit of the doubt because I've lived in the area for 7 years with few problems).
The ketchup incident was minor, compared to getting charged for a glass of wine I decided not to order and the response was a glare, and the hostess repeatedly ignoring our requests for the getting our waitresses' attention. The manager seemed to be the only person who understood the meaning of customer service and promptly refunded the wine and the pizza that never arrived.
Adding insult to injury? Watching from another restaurant across the street, what else failed to arrive? Â That alleged "large private party."
With service like this, I need not wonder why.
Had a birthday lunch here with a friend and really enjoyed my first visit. We shared some items and then got a smaller entree for our main meal. Everything was great. Cheese plate was yummy, bacon wrap dates - to die for and the Pretzel Break sliders my friend said were the best. I would say out of the whole meal, my least favorite thing was their mac and cheese, but even that was good.
I got their caesar salad with chicken which was really tasty, but I would ask them to put it on a different plate. You have to cut up the salad and the skinny plate it comes on makes it very difficult.
I am looking forward to going back.
Nice atmosphere, wide variety of food and lots of organic options, which is great! I imagine on a weekend night it's a bit of a scene, with a big bar and several very large tv screens. We were there for lunch and it was a nice, laid back environment and the food was very good. My husband LOVED his pizza and he is very, very picky. The owner was really friendly and hospitable, we will definitely be back!
Review Source:I've only been here once, but as soon as we were done, I knew I needed to come back again.
This place replaced the often empty Italian restaurant. Â There is definitely always a good amount of business whenever I pass by. Â We went during lunch and their special is the press sandwiches, which comes with a small side salad and either regular fries or sweet potato fries, for $9.95! Â I shared the sweet brie press and the house press. Â Both were great! Â The sweet brie was a little too sweet, but still very good. Â The house press was delicious. Â The fries were awesome!
The husband couldn't decide on a beer so the waitress suggested getting a sample size for $2-3 for each. Â That was a pretty good deal.
The few downsides: Â the parking (it's tough being on Ventura) and the service was a little slow.
My latest experience at On the Thirty inspired me to write my first Yelp review.
First off, the food is great. The balls of meat are fantastic, as are the salty eggs. I like how they serve hot dishes like the mac and cheese in cast iron dishes which keeps the food hot.
You can tell the sandwiches and charcuterie are really made with love. The beer selection is really nice and the interior is well done.
Despite all this the service is absolutely horrible. I first went a couple weeks after opening and figured they would need a little bit to tweak everything and get it perfect. Fast forward a few months and a few visits later and each time I've been disappointed by how long it takes to get my food, and once just being ignored because we sat outside.
During my most recent trip I went for lunch. Â There were only about three other parties all who already had food. Somehow, it took 45 minutes to get 3 appetizers. First, they brought out the mac and cheese but got the order wrong and we had them take it back. Our waitress rolled her eyes as if to say "Ugh, again?"
When we inquired where the other food was, we were informed that several to go orders had come in, and those were going out first. I'm not sure how a phone order is more important than someone's order who is currently sitting in the restaurant. Â
Excuses don't fly well with me; a courteous "Let me go check on that for you" would have been great. On top of that, our waitress put our table number in wrong, so when our food did finally come out, the manager kept attempting to deliver it to the wrong people.
To their credit they offered to comp another round of beers, but we weren't looking for a boozy lunch so we declined.
Again, I can't say enough great things about their food. If they could get their service together this place could be fantastic, but the lack of caring by the wait staff and disorganization easily drags this places down a couple stars.
LOVE this place! Great for dining out for the local single, a date or a group of friends.
The service is pleasant and they create an overall experience.
The owners seem to really be engaged with the staff and patrons; which to me is quality! Â Not to mention great food, wine, and sweet potato fries to die for.
I recommend this place and hope everyone checks it out!
This place is awesome! We sat outside on the patio and were greeted by a very friendly waitress named Megan. She was very professional and very helpful. She walked my wife through the wine and beer list (my wife went with Megan's recommendation of "Coronado Orange" beer...which was very good)
She memorized our whole order and didn't even bother writing anything down!
We ordered a large carne pizza which was very good and very fulfilling.
So to summarize, the food was very good and the service was beyond EXCELLENT. I would definitely recommend eating here.
So I guess that 'flyer-in-the-door' advertising does work, I hate to say. My girl and I were contemplating a dinner date when we got a little postcard for On the Thirty on our door. A peek at the online menu got us interested--particularly in the deviled eggs, the promise of local seasonal cuisine, and the excellent beer and wine list--and a few hours later we dropped in.
Right off the bat it seemed low-key and non-pretentious--which, let's face it, is pretty important to fit in with Valley clientele, with open seating and a giant bar as the centerpiece of the semi-small restaurant in Ventura Blvds' La Reina stripmall. A TV played the NBA Finals, and young pretty waitresses buzzed around the decent and somewhat trendy Monday-night crowd.
We were greeted by a guy who appeared to be the bartender, but when he came over a minute later to make sure we were comfortable we learned he was the chef and co-owner Justin. Big points there, it was clear Justin cared very much about first impressions. All through the meal Justin was very hands-on, which went a long way toward the 5-star rating.
Since my girl is pescatarian, we had to get the deviled eggs and the mac and cheese sans bacon, which may have negatively impacted them a little. Both were still very good--the deviled eggs were sneaky HOT with habaneros mixed in, and the mac and cheese had perfect texture even while mixing gruyere and goat cheese. I wouldn't say they were unbelievably amazing, but we also didn't get them as the chef intended them. So, fair warning, this is meat-eater gastropub fare first and foremost, with accommodations for diet restrictions possible but not necessarily ideal.
After we ordered wine, Justin recommended the prosciutto pizza for me, and I'm so glad he did. Whereas the apps were just solid, the pizza was outstanding. It really is one of the best pizzas I've had in LA. I don't claim to be a pizza aficionado, but that crispy, garlicky crust--cured for 16 hours, apparently--was dynamite, and the huge fresh slices of prosciutto atop a fried egg(!) sold me that Justin can back his claims of the best pizza you'll ever have. My girl had the crabcakes, which she seemed to enjoy immensely. I was too busy destroying that pizza. Seriously good.
The best part of the meal, however, was maybe the wine I chose, which Justin expertly paired with the pizza. The Belle Glos pinot noir was magnificent, and my girl's Zinfandel was also excellent. I'll come back again to sample some of the local brews, the 30 of which (along with 30 CA wines) are the reason for the restaurant's name.
I was somewhat underwhelmed with the servers themselves, most of whom I assume were hired not so much for their expertise with food and beverage but for being easy on the eyes. Hey, when two dudes open a restaurant in LA, what do you expect? I would have knocked off a star for their mediocrity, but honestly Justin was so helpful and present that the servers were fine just being food runners and bussers.
Justin mentioned that a full liquor license is on the way, with the intent to have a mixologist-style bar with fine whiskeys and gins and such. Good move there, the Valley desperately needs to catch up with K-town in that regard.
All said, I'll definitely be going back, Justin made such a great impression. I wish him luck!
Regular at Barry's Bootcamp which is on the 2nd floor of this complex and have seen this location go through several restaurants and with the way this place is serving up the food and drinks think finally found a keeper for this location!
LOVE the deviled eggs, bacon wrapped dates, and the ICE CREAM SANDWICH cookie!!! Absolutely amazing... had the pistachio ice cream between sugar cookie and can't wait to try the others!
I have yet to sit outside with the faux firepit but ambience looks great especially on a nice warm summer's night... I don't mind the barstool sitting inside but yes sometimes you just want to lean back and relax which can't do if sitting on the barstools...
Great place to chill with friends or bring a date... you won't be disappointed!
3.5 stars. This place has been open for a few months.
+Good salads (the chop is excellent)
-The chop salad is $14 and I believe if you want it with meat it's $19. A little steep for a gastro pub
+Flatbread Pizza is very tasty, lots of options
- I would have ordered a fun variety but took the bartender's suggestion of the Simple (like a margarita pizza) which wasn't overly exciting.
+Nice atmosphere.
- No advertised Happy Hour visible inside once you are seated. We got here closer to 7 so probably wouldn't have been in time if they have one. But nothing is mentioned on their website either...
+Very Friendly and Helpful staff
- No full bar yet (working on their liquor license)
I'll come back for another try once they can serve up fun cocktails.
I absolutely loved this place! I want to go back!
It is a wine & pizza bar. Â Great decor and ambience. Â The waitresses and waiters were very nice and chatty. Â Maybe because we were sitting at the bar, and I ask a lot of questions :)
Anyways, Â the sliders were DELICIOUS! The meat was so tender and juicy and they use all grass-fed meat. Â We also tried the Prosciutto pizza, which was sooo good.
I definitely recommend this place and I will for sure go again!!!!
With such great reviews on yelp, after yelping ourselves (we do this quite often if we're feeling fickle about where to eat), we stumbled into On the Thirty. Tucked into a shopping center, you'd have no idea it ever existed! (Drive by this place all the time and never noticed it) We were immediately greeted with prompt service and immediately seated, so that was a major plus. Waiters are very attentive.
We ordered the cheese/charcuterie plate to start (a mixed selection of 5 meats/cheeses for $20- not too bad), and chose Calabrese salami, prosciutto and another aged salami, an aged gouda (yellow, rich-cheddary-like flavor) and a white, mild goat's milk cheese. The plate came with a pepper jelly, almonds and honey, some green olives and a few slices of bread. All in all, wouldn't say it was the BEST cheese plate I've ever had, but my girlfriend is Spanish and seemed to enjoy it, which means its definitely not bad :)
We ordered as our entrees the Kale salad and veggie pizza. Neither were incredibly exciting, but again, definitely not bad.
Ps- The blood orange amber beer was to die for and my girlfriend loved her wine (Sextant 2010 Zin), so major plus on the great alc selection- thats a big deal to us and can always make or break an otherwise "good" or "average" restaurant
Personally, the food alone doesn't deserve 4 or even 5 stars, but the service, ambiance and alcohol were a major bonus. Maybe I am being too hard on this place, but I've been to plenty of other local, fabulous restaurants around the sherman oaks area that had much better food. Again, let me reiterate- THE FOOD WAS NOT BAD. Just not exciting.
A friend of mine has been raving about this place. Â So last night a bunch of us met up and WOW was she not wrong.
Our server Jenny was fabulous. I was unsure about which beer to choose and she made the suggestion of Dudes Blood Orange Amber Ale. Â What a great choice as it was amazing! Â She also offered another suggestion which I took...The Bruery's Humulus Lager also delicious. Â I had the meat and cheese platter, my friends had the truffle French fries, balls of meat, one of their gourmet pizzas, the Caesar salad and sliders. Â
For dessert we split the chocolate mousse cake and Jenny suggested that the Old Rasputin Imperial Stout goes wonderfully with the dessert. Â I again took her up on the suggestion and well Jenny was once again spot on!
Everyone was incredibly friendly and it was great to see the entire staff working as a true team. Â I cannot wait to go back and check out more of the menu and check out their brunch! Parking isn't too bad; there is a paid parking lot as well as street and residential parking available.
Even though this location has had several occupancy changes, I truly believe this one is here to stay! Â It is a perfect place to come with friends, on a date night, to celebrate, or to just sit back, relax, and enjoy some fantastic food, drinks, and music.
You will not be disappointed.
Exceptional food, service and extensive beer/wine collection! Â
I joined a friend on Saturday afternoon and sat at the bar. Â There was an all staff meeting going on outside (which is great because you know that the owners care about making sure all the details about good service is being communicated!) Â One of the best parts of my experience was a girl named LIZ!!! Â She's actually a chef that was helping work the FOH and was so accommodating, funny, smart and took exceptional care of my friend and I while at the bar. Â
Trust me, you'll love this place. Â The staff is very receptive and look forward to wowing you with their food and service any chance they get!
** I actually know one of the owners! (please don't think that this will effect my review as I didn't know she was an owner till my second visit. **
Well this is what took over the panini place that was here before and if you ask me it's an upgrade. I mean Ventura Blvd is slowly giving up it's sushi fad ways to make way for gastropubs and let me tell you (even as a sushi lover) I'm glad to see the change. Sushi restaurants are EvErYwHeRe on Ventura Blvd and I'm sick of them cause they're not all good, maybe a handful would I consider going back to. But alas this is not about sushi, this is about wines/beers/and charcuterie....
As you may have guessed it's called "on the thirty" simply because they carry 30 CA wines and 30 CA craft beers... 30 on 30.... All great choices, all different and unique (with some of the ones you like to see at all of the other pubs). And their wine list looks delicious. I opted for beer on the first trip and decided to keep it bubbly and maybe dive into the wines later.
Their charcuterie is pretty good, 5 meats, 5 cheeses order them all because they're al pretty tasty, but I will knock a star off because noone could answer me where all of the meats and cheeses came from (aside from what was already in the description). I'd pressure their staff to look this stuff up because thanks to the food network, cooking channel, and travel channel the hosts are heading to those places that know their nose to tail and everything that goes with it.
I also had one of their pizzas and it wasn't "the best I've ever had" but it was pretty good flatbread pizza (I've had pizza in Rome which I consider the best). But it's a great start. I hear that one of the co owners is the chef and he doesn't have any culinary background, just liked to cook and everyone told him he should open a restaurant.... so he did.
The ambience is nice, no too sports bar, no too dark, they have a little stage where performers can entertain the guests. The bar is a good size (about the length of the restaurant) and the staff are not to bad to look at.
What I do wish is that they had their hard liquor license, simple because they have a cheese that "goes great with whisky!"... but they don't serve whiskey.....
But in the words of our late govenator "I'll be back".
We decided to try On the Thirty last week. Â We went pretty early and were surprised how busy it was. Â The first thing you notice is that all the workers are women. The only men we saw were the Manager and Chef. Â And, the women wear mini skirts that are so dated, it's painful, and pretty sexist. Â I felt I was in a Hooters. Â We sat at the bar. Â We were waited on by a woman who added fishnet stockings to her utterly classless outfit. Â Also, the music is quite loud.
Important: Â This place only has a Beer and Wine Liquor License. Â So, forget about getting a cocktail. Â This is a major flaw in this location. Â
We ordered a beer and a soft drink. Â The beer was fine. Â
Then, we ordered food. Â My friend ordered the Chicken special. Â I ordered a sandwich.
About 20 minutes later my friend's dinner arrived. Â Nothing for me. Â About 10 minutes later the bar waitress said, "You're food will be here soon." Â Another 5 minutes went by and she said the same thing again. Â After another 5 minutes, she asked how everything was (duh, there's no food in front of me) and gestured that I had no food. Â About 5 minutes later the male Manager came up, told me that the computer screwed up and my order never went in. Â He said they were going to comp me on my dinner. Â The chef came up about 10 minutes later saying I was the priority and would get my sandwich soon. Â Another 10 minutes went by and I finally got my sandwich. Â It took over 20 minutes after the second order went in to get a sandwich on plain Ciabatta bread that was NOT a cooked meal. Clearly, my order was just put at the back of the line and not given any priority at all.
I told the Manager that it is basic restaurant procedure to not deliver meals to a table unless all the meals are delivered at the same time. Â He agreed.
The bar waitress was really at fault. Â The minute she saw my friend's meal come without mine, she should have taken the initiative and gone to the kitchen to find out what happened. Â She did nothing until after three times telling me my food was coming soon. Â I had to bring it up -- she never did. Â This is a bad employee who really has no interest in the customers. Â She was actually more interested in flirting with the two men sitting next to me.
Will we go back? Â Without a full bar and after the lack luster customer service, I doubt we'll be back. Â Compare this to Local Peasant down the street and you'll see the difference between restaurant owners who care about customers and those who couldn't care less. Â Having been a bankruptcy lawyer for almost 40 years, unless serious changes are made by management, I give this place no more than 6 months before it closes.
I'm always on the lookout for restaurants in Los Angeles that have excellent service, are reasonably priced, have great food and give off a nice vibe.
On The Thirty is such a place.
While it bills itself as wine/sports bar, it is really much more. Most of the items on the  menu are different and unique. Plus it exudes a relaxed and family friendly feel.  Despite the laid back ambiance, the service was quick and efficient.
The restaurant itself is spacious and nicely laid out with plenty of cushioned stools at the bar and rustic dark wood tables and benches along the wall. There's also patio outside if you want to bring the dog and work on your tan.The inter-generational music was at a reasonable level and the place was spotless.
When I was there for Sunday brunch this past weekend, I noticed they had Maryland Crab Cake Eggs Benedict on the menu. I said to myself, "Oh boy. Here we go again." Â
Having been born and raised in Maryland, I cannot tell you how many times I have been disappointed with California restaurants offering so called 'Maryland-style' crab cakes. Â Most of the time I am disappointed beyond belief because they have so much filler and very little recognizable crab meat that tastes like back home in Baltimore.
Not here!
If this On The Thirty dish were served at the Inner Harbor, people would stand up and applaud! It was fabulous! While little short on the Old Bay seasoning, the lump crab meat was the real deal.
I can't wait to go back and have it again. You know what I mean, Hon?
After massages & facials my bestie & I decided to check the new local spot out. Â
Amazing to meet such a pleasant staff & owner ~ Justin, whom took the time to insure all was well with the customers, floating from table to table wearing a smile. Â Our waitress was such a delight, funny, light hearted & checked on us just enough. Â I tried the bacon wrapped dates ~ DO OVER loved them; salted Eggs?! Â YES!; truffle fries.... Shut your mouth! Â Since when did even COLD fries taste so good?! Â When you have two girls like us talking up a storm we tend to sit & eat for hours.... That could lead to a larger pant size ;-((. Ok ok, we tried not to eat everything, so we threw in a chicken dijon sandwich to share & a salad I forgot the name of it. Â Ooops! Â After all that, I was still gazing at other people's food, dreaming of tasting it. Â Lol, smh I can't wait to go back & taste some new things. Â I hear a new menu, with additional yumminess is coming soon!
Finally, a good wine bar has come to Sherman Oaks.  The ambiance is nice, spacious restaurant with plenty of seating, there are enough TVs (but not too many to give it  a sports bar feel) and good out door seating.  Here's the reason why I give it 3 stars. First, although there is a great wine selection, they are constantly out of half the good wines on the menu.  What is the point of having a wine bar with good wine if it's never stocked? Â
I had the Laguna a few weeks ago, which was a reasonably priced Chardonnay ($12) and although I have come back at least 2-3 times  and the bar still doesn't have it in stock.  Second, after I'm told they are out of the wine(s) I want, the server typically recommends a glass of wine that $5-$10 more expensive.  This has happened to on more than one occasion and to multiple friends of mine that have come here.  Third, the food is average overall with the exception of the turkey sandwich. It is a MUST TRY.  The spicy jam used in the sandwich is amazing and I was told that a jar can purchased at the restaurant.  Lastly, there is a huge sign in front of the restaurant that says happy hour from 5-7pm, however there really is no happy hour special except for maybe one glass of wine that's still $9.  If you don't have a happy hour, don't advertise it.
I also have to mention that I came on Sunday and there is live music, which was great! I believe the artist's name was Aaron and he was amazing. His voice sounded comparable to that of Michael Buble's. Â Nice touch On the 30. Â Â
Overall, I still like this place and will be returning. Â Just please restock your wine cellar!
I am so happy a good wine bar slash restaurant has moved into the neighborhood. I have lived in the area since 2004 and I've seen many places come and go - but nothing that excites me. I am hoping the place sticks...
The owners are super nice and friendly. They walk around and see how you are doing, ask what wine you're drinking and offer advice as what to try on the menu and why. Hoping this is a culture and not just because they are a new restaurant.
The food is really good. I like small share-able plates. The pizza, mac n cheese, cheese plate and fries are SO good. Every wine i've tried so far is good. The one i'm in love with is $16 a glass but I guess  its my fault I have an expensive pallet.
The first time I came here our server didn't know anything about wine - the second time our server knew her stuff.
As a marketer I do have to point out the small items I hope they improve on.
1. Website look and feel  (currently it links to Go Daddy)
2. Streamlined menu's rather than the 4 that are distributed to your table
3. Staff - If the idea is to walk the floor and cater to your guests, Â I love that - however If a server can't answer questions about wine - offer to have the sommelier come to the table.
Overall very pleased and glad I don't have to drive to Silverlake or Los Feliz for a glass of wine all the time ;)
I am happy to welcome this classy delicious friendly "mature" bar to Sherman Oaks. The inside is spacious and has good music. You won't have to shout really loud to talk to your friends here. The bartenders are friendly and will tell you everything you need to know about the California beers they offer. No hard liquor here but they make it up with really good flatbreads to share. Great place for dinner with friends!
I would call this the grown up bar that has a good crowd of people, not like Mad Bulls or Spitting Chicken where I've seen people throw up on tables.
Came here earlier this evening to check it out. Â It's only been open 2 months so I'm sure they're still working out the kinks. Â Not a bad first effort but not a great one either. Hopefully they'll work out some of the issues and be a welcome addition to Ventura Ave in the valley (yes, I know seemingly everything in the valley is on/off Ventura). Â
Food
- We ordered a pizza and sandwich and split them. Â
- Pizza - The Thirty - marinara/mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, bruschetta, mushroom, basil - We got a large and it was bigger than we expected. Â $18. Â Decent but the one complaint we had was that it was a bit burnt in certain areas. Â I'm all for char and a crispy crust but it was a bit too much so in some instances. Â
- Prosciutto - prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, tomato, arugula, balsamic glaze on a roll served with sweet potato fries. Â Sandwich was decent as well. Â Nothing spectacular but good. Â Another complaint was the fries. Â They were cold when they came out to us. Â My two cents - fries should be served hot/warm. Â Cold/room temperature fries, not all that. Â
Atmosphere
- It's a long rectangular space that is deeper than it is wide. It has several flatscreens mounted so if you're looking for a game this isn't a bad option. They have stylized picnic benches at tables inside. It looks good but if you want back support sit on the side with the couch, not the bench. Â They have a few tables outside that might be nice on warm evening such as tonight. Â
Service
- Okay. Standard. Â
Overall I give it 3 stars. Â It's an okay start. Â I think there is room for improvement and given it's nascent state, here to hoping it continues to improve and deliver.
Wine, craft beer, great food...
I was curious to try a new restaurant, and one that had wine as a feature. Â I was pleasantly surprised that they also feature craft beer. Â As you can expect, the food menu is also fabulous, with several appetizers, salads, pizza, and pressed sandwiches to have with your beverage. Â
I chose the Cordon 2011 Zinfandel, from French Camp Vineyard in Paso Robles. Â It was dry for a zinfandel, but very pleasant, and inexpensive. Â On The Thirty's manager and sommolier discussed with me how French Camp is associated with Etienne Terlinden, winemaker of Summerland in Santa Barbara, who is also a US Navy Seal. Â I really like drinking local wine, and it is nice to hear knowledge about it from staff.
I ordered the House Press to go with my Zinfandel, which is a pressed sandwich with chicken, carmelized onions, cheese, arugala, and Pranqster Dijon mustard. Â It came with sweet potato fries, which were crisp and perfectly prepared, and a small side salad with organic baby greens. Â I thought it was absolutely perfect with my wine! Â I asked for more of the mustard, and finished everything.
I give it 4 stars rather than 5 just because the food took a few more minutes than expected, but nothing major. Â The staff was very attentive. Â I look forward to my next visit!
I really want to like this place. With a little work, it could be so much better, so I hope they get the kinks worked out.
Let's start with the service. On their website, the restaurant boasts "On The Thirty's staff is as beautiful and educated as it gets." Beautiful, perhaps, but educated? Not so much.
For a place that purports to be a wine bar, their servers should have a basic understanding of how to serve wine. I'm not a wine snob, but there is basic etiquette for serving wine, which includes offering the host a taste before serving the rest of the party. Our server opened the bottle at our table and them immediately distributed the wine into four HOT (fresh from dishwasher) glasses in front of her, two of which were white wine glases because they had "run out" of red wine glasses.
I initially ordered a different bottle from their wine list, but the server informed me that it had been replaced with something else, which was "ten times better." When asked the name of the winery or the region it comes from, she said, "I don't know, but it's really good." I finally asked her to bring a bottle over so I could look at it; the mystery wine turned out to be Belle Glos Las Alturas Pinot Noir, which was indeed a truly nice wine. But the service experience was more sports bar than wine bar.
Water glasses were frequently empty, so we had to continually ask for more water. In general the waitstaff was just not very attentive. The restaurant was busy, but not overwhelmingly so, and they seemed to have enough servers to cover the number of tables.
On to the food: Truffle Mac and Cheese was excellent, by far the winner among our party. The "Thirty" pizza was also quite good. A few people in our party ordered the Bourbon-glazed flank steak, which was well prepared, but overwhelmed by the sauce--to the point of not being able to taste the meat. If they cut the sauce by half (or served it on the side) the dish would have been much better balanced.
A few final suggestions: Simplify your menus so that each guest doesn't have to deal with four different pages in front of them. If beer and wine will be rotated frequently, print a daily/weekly menu. Identify draught vs bottle on the beer list. For wine, offer a bottle discount instead of 4x glass price. And maybe print the menu black-on-white instead of white-on-black so that those of us older than 30 can read the menu in a dark restaurant.
Very cute place. Food wasn't bad; some things better than others. Our group really enjoyed Mac & cheese, prosciutto and egg pizza, the poached pear and goat cheese salad, and bacon wrapped dates. Warm goat cheese salad and beet salad were very meh. My girlfriend ordered Frank Family cab and I loved it.
The space looks nice and is comfortable. Outside seating looks really fun. They also told us there is a back room you can reserve for 8.
Service was good. Even at the bar we were checked on several times. My husband even mentioned how surprising that was.
We live in the neighborhood and we will definitely be back here to hang out.
Visited this place on a Tuesday night during early dinner-ish time. Not packed but looked like there was definitely a steady flow of people.
The patio was super cute and would be nice on a warm evening. Decor and ambiance inside was very chill - classy and relaxed at the same time. There was also a DJ spinning, very fun. And thankfully the music was a welcome addition as background noise rather than making it impossible to hear or talk.
Employees were very friendly...ok, maybe a little too friendly. I tend to prefer to be left alone while I'm trying to converse/socialize/eat with the rest of my group. I immensely appreciate being checked on but by the time the 3rd person asked me how everything was going I kinda wanted to scream. Our waitress was doing a perfectly fine job handling the table; I didn't think the hostess, bus boy and interior decorator all needed to ALSO make sure everything was ok. Trust me. If I needed something, I would ask.
We ordered caesar salad, french fries, turkey sandwich and the cookies. All were quite good, came out at a good speed and were made how we ordered them. No complaints on food quality at all!
Will definitely be back to try some of the other things on the menu. If the only complaint is that the staff was too attentive, why not!
READ THIS REVIEW!!!! I KNOW ITS LONG, BUT DO IT!
I am giving 4 stars ONLY because I've been here a few times and I want to be fair. If I was giving a review of my time there based on TODAY, It would have been 1 star. Â I hope its safe to say that today was an isolated incident. I REALLY hope so, because if I go back and it happens again, I will not come back.
The first day I came was very nice. Just had a glass of wine and their flourless chocolate cake (don't judge me, it was a stressful day... LOL). I got to meet the owner/chef who was quite nice (his name escapes me at the moment). I could tell it was a brand new spot, and that they were still getting their vibe together. Ok by me. What I had was tasty, and the staff was nice. My first visit was during the day, so I made a point to come back at night to check out the night vibe. I returned about a week later. Turkey sliders. Vino, and a drunk guy promising to help "manage my career". LOL. Good Times.
Then there was today. I actually tried to go to Crave Cafe whose crowd was literally  spilling out to the sidewalk. Um... to hell with that noise. Then I remembered On The Thirty. Win! (or so I thought). I was one of maybe... 5 customers inside. Jenny was my server. She was sweet, but not a good server AT ALL. I literally sat there FOREVER with no attention to service. She never offered to get me another glass of wine, and checked on me only AFTER she saw the owner wave to me. She actually apologized for "running around on me"... running for who? No one was really there. I had to ask for my bill, and was offered another glass from a different employee who just happened to be walking by.
She walked past my table about 7 times and never ran my check. I had to get up and take it to the bar myself. I could see if the place was stuffed, and yes, I saw that there was a birthday party on the patio. That's no reason to neglect your customers INSIDE. Just have another server tend to me if you can't. I've worked in restaurants. I get it, its crazy sometimes. Still no excuse. I'm annoyed greatly with her lack of service. Food today was great though. Sweet brie pressed sandwich on a pretzel bun. I added chicken. I recommend.
