Went here with the hubby and kids for dinner. Â We frequented another place for Japanese food. Â But I pass by this place everyday while dropping off the kids to school. Â I finally had to give it a try. Â Glad I did!
This will be the place we will come to more frequently now since it's closer, good food, and great personal service. Â No wait on a Friday night, but busy enough where you knew this hidden gem is a good place to go. Â
We had the salad with ginger dressing, yakitori, miso soup, spicy salmon roll, 2 other of their specialty sushi rolls, and dessert. Â All good!!
Can't wait to try more on future visits.
I seemed to not have the same experience that alot of others have had at Osaka Sushi. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty and they seated me on the far end of the sushi bar, making me feel isolated. They then placed the next single person on the other end of the sushi bar, which increased the awkwardness level. I decided to order the sashimi lunch special, which came with soup, salad, shrimp and veggie tempura and a California roll. The soup was very good, but when the salad arrived, so did the problems. The salad was about 8 or 10 pieces of lettuce with a gelatinous dressing that tasted absolutely terrible. Then my main plate arrived. The sashimi, "roll" and tempura were all on one plate. The sashimi was 6 slices of fish that smelled so funky I was afraid to eat it. When I asked the chef behind the bar about it, he said it smelled fine. The California "roll" was two pieces of a roll that felt like it had not been made recently, an i saw the chef put pieces of the same roll on another plate for another person. The tempura was partly redeeming. The veggies were fried perfectly, and the tempura was crunchy. The shrimp was tasty as well and I was hoping to have more of it. I would recommend adding a little wasabi to the tempura dipping sauce to really give it a pop. For the price of lunch, I would recommend going to another sushi restaurant where the lunch will be a little more filling. On a personal note however, the staff was very nice, minus the "non-English speaking" chef. The hostess and wait staff were incredibly nice and fast with water refills and change, and made sure to open the door and pull out my seat. I would recommend going to Osaka for the tempura, and maybe try the sushi on a different day.
Review Source:Great service and friendly/fun atmosphere. Also have a pretty good dessert selection.
So why only 3 stars? I had difficulty finding rolls I wanted to eat because almost every roll includes imitation crab. For some strange reason, I am allergic to imitation crab (but not real crab). Maybe I should add one star back because they happily substituted spicy tuna for the crab on the rolls I wanted to try, but I wish they had created rolls that didn't include fake crab and/or cream cheese.
For two ppl, we ordered 4 rolls and a few pieces of nigiri. Then we ordered dessert to celebrate our birthdays (but we were pushing it). The fried cheesecake dessert is yummy!
In sum... I would still rather go to Sushi Den and Japon's... but if this joint is passable if you don't mind fake crab.
Was in Denver for a week and this wonderful place was across the hotel.
Coming from New York, my sushi standard is pretty high and boy was i impressed.
The sushi was fresh and tasty, the service was warm, friendly and attentive. They also had a good selection of Korean dishes, but i was stuffed from the amazing rolls i had just downed !!
It was raining very heavily and the owner actually offered to drop me at my hotel. Now that says something !!!
Fantastic sushi! Â Definitely one of the top spots in Denver!
What makes Osaka extra special is the friendliness and attentiveness of the owner and staff. Â We were greeted warmly upon arrival and checked on throughout the dining experience. Â The staff also handled our special requests without batting an eye. Â As others have mentioned, the owner frequently treats guests to a free round of sake bombs. Â Nothing tops off a great sushi meal like a free sake bomb!
I did not order any items off the sushi menu but I sure stared longingly as I saw some delivered to surrounding tables. Â I can't wait to get back and try the tempura. Â As for what I did order - the rolls were delish. Â Everything was super fresh and high quality. Â Osaka Sushi has another devotee.
Holy CRAP I think I've found my new favorite sushi joint.
I came to Osaka Sushi per the recommendation of another sushi fanatic friend of mine. I wasn't expecting too terribly much, and was extremely pleasantly surprised.
We walked in a little after 8 on a Friday evening, and the place was super lively. I think the owner had just bought the entire restaurant a round of sake bombs, as everyone was standing up with a sake bomb in hand and there was beer covering the bar. The staff got everything cleaned up super quickly, though, and we were able to nab a spot at the bar.
My friend and I usually order flavored sake when we can at sushi restaurants, but a new alcoholic item we'd never seen before caught our eye first this time. They offered Soju (essentially Korean vodka) in a couple of different flavors. Not knowing any better, we ordered the strawberry Soju. They sliced up a few fresh strawberries into a glass teapot and poured the Soju over those to allow the liquid to take on the flavor of the strawberries. You might want to wait like 15 minutes for this to happen, as we only waited about 5 minutes and our first shot did not taste like strawberry at all. We now refer to Soju as a teapot of shots.... it sure made for a fun night!
Now for the rolls... They had all kinds of delicious creations. Being a fruity sushi lover, I had to try the Tropicana roll - tempura shrimp and crab topped with kiwi and strawberry sauce. This did not disappoint. They also had our standard favorite sweet potato roll along with some other various great rolls. My only complaint with the rolls is that they are on the small side. Typically at a sushi restaurant my friend and I can order three rolls and be stuffed. We had to order about six here to feel satisfied. Their hamachi shashimi was TO. DIE. FOR, however and more than made up for the small rolls. This really was the best hamachi I've ever had.... even better *gasp* than Sushi Sasa's, which has been my shining standard for several years now.
I can't wait to go back here. The environment was great, the sushi was fantastic, and it was altogether a really fun experience.
Osaka is one of the best sushi places I've been to in Denver. We ordered a combination of sushi, rolls and chef specials. I really enjoyed the tacos and the Hawaiian White Tuna (Waloo) sushi was spectacular. The Rainbow Roll and Osaka Roll were the perfect compliments to each other. The fish was all very fresh and the flavors and presentation were very well done. While this is better sushi than many places, it is also more expensive ($96 for 2 with no drinks or dessert).
I had two problems with this place. When we walked in the door we were hit with the smell of gas. I think the kitchen vents into the dining room??? The smell was very noticeable the whole time we were there, almost overwhelmingly, which did not make for the most pleasant dining experience.
My other issue was the service. Our water glasses were not refilled the entire time we were there and the food was slow coming out of the kitchen. We ordered several items and were starving. It would have been great for them to bring out the dishes as they were ready instead of waiting to bring everything at once 30 min after placing our order. We showed up at 6-ish on a Saturday night and most of the tables were empty (no wait). It did start to fill up around 7.
My first review and Was compelled to write about Osaka. This place was incredible. Great sushi, excellent service. With some neighborhood joints you have to sacrifice a little with quality, but this place has all the perks of your fav neighborhood joint with awesome food. The owner is fantastic! Between hosting and seating, he's holding babies, making sake bombs for the entire place and placing orders. I'd come back just because of him, but the sushi happens to be awesome as well. It's lacks some ambiance, but makes up for it in warmth and exceptional sushi.
Review Source:Like other reviewers have remarked, Osaka is far too expensive for what it is. Â What is it? Â It's an *ok* sushi restaurant, not bad by any stretch, but definitely not great either.
A friend and I are avid sushi fans, but we've never racked up a $180 tab before for 2 people. That's Sushi Sasa territory, which is worth it when you visit one of the best sushi places in Denver--which Osaka is unfortunately not.
Granted, we shared a $25 bottle of sake, but were left scratching our heads when the bill came out. Â I just couldn't shake the feeling we got jobbed with $15 specials that weren't that 'special' after all.
In addition, I found the fish to be very undersized and more around a grade B quality. Â The rice was poorly made as our nigiri fell apart upon touch.
The inside was clean, albeit a little dim for my liking. The lunch rush had probably come and gone by that point, so we took a seat at the bar. Our female server, Haejoo, asked for my ID because she thought I was younger than 21 (I'm 28). A lot of people agree. It's just good genes, I guess.
Spicy pandas like heat, so my friend and I did the Nuclear Roll Challenge. Simply consume eight pieces of spicy tuna sushi, topped with the chef's special spicy sauce. All they would tell me was wasabi oil was in there. I wasn't scared at all. More like giddy and freakin' excited. There's no time limit, and if you finish the roll, you get a free small bottle of cold sake.
The rolls (one for me and one for my friend) were placed in front of us. A very small challenge that I thought would somehow pack more punch than it did.
I felt the wasabi go up my nose, and I very slightly teared up from all that, but I powered through without problems. Sushi gone in less than a minute, to Haejoo's shock. My friend wasn't too far behind, finishing about a minute after me. Two guys finished in two minutes. Yup, we're badasses.
I took a nice celebratory shot of sake just for the heck of it. The rest would get consumed at a later time.
Very good sushi here, with fresh ingredients. The guys working behind the counter weren't as talkative. I guess they were merely in the zone working and prepping for the dinner rush.
This was probably my easiest food challenge to date. I'd definitely come back for more than one Nuclear Roll, just to see how much I can take down. If anything, I'd probably get full before any sort of heat took me down. But I probably would also want to try some of the other specialty rolls. A dilemma, indeed....
Was really surprised at what a great time I had here. Inside is nothing fancy, but I really loved the seared tuna sashimi and the Denver roll. In particular, I really loved that the roll came rolled with cucumber instead of rice. I also tasted the green mussels which were tasty, but not my personal fav. My meal mate really liked a few of the handroll options as well. A nice option outside of the usual sushi heavy hitters like Den, Sasa, etc.
Will totally be back!
Osaka is a phenomenal sushi restaurant. Â Very neighborhoody and friendly beyond belief. Â Every roll I've had there has been interesting and delicious. Â My recommendation is the Mega Lotto and Fire Caterpillar rolls. Â
Also, Wakatake sake ($50 a bottle, the green one, totally worth it) tastes and goes down like water so be careful. Â The owner will do a special trick with sake bombs if it's your birthday or if he feels like it, and trust me you've never seen it and it's awesome!
You don't go to Osaka for the pomp, you go there for incredible food and a neighborly environment; and you don't valet your whip, but you leave with a nice wobble in your walk.
My absolute favorite establishment, sushi or otherwise in Denver.
When you look up "local gem" in the dictionary it should mention Osaka.
Really good sushi but what makes the place is how friendly they are--The owner always walks the floor and even drinks saki bombs with the patrons. Waitstaff (especially Kae) are consistently amazing.
I absolutely love this place. I've eaten at a multitude of sushi restaurants and this is in my pick of Top 2 (the other being Hapa, but Hapa is slightly more expensive). The price/quality ratio at Osaka is the best I've found so far.
It's semi-pricey (I'm in college) but when I get to go out to a nice dinner this is where I usually go. It's one of those places where you could dress up and take a date, or you could wear jeans and a t-shirt with some friends. The wait staff is good and the atmosphere is relaxing. Bring a light jacket however, certain areas of the restaurant are kind of chilly.
My favorite 2 things off the menu are the TNT appetizer and the Ultimate Osaka Roll, however I've enjoyed everything I've had here. The drinks are great and the geisha dessert is delicious.
If you enjoy sushi or japanese food in general I highly recommend Osaka.
I have been to a few different sushi places around town but I keep coming back to Osaka. Â I have never had a bad experience here. Â The quality of the fish is excellent and it's often melt-in-your-mouth fresh. Â
Our usual order includes a combination of salmon, tuna, yellow tail sushi and/or sashimi, spicy tuna rolls, and a couple of the specialty rolls. Â Our current faves are the Denver, Playgirl, and Rainbow rolls. Â You also can't go wrong with the daily fresh selections. Â This past weekend we had some heavenly halibut and we don't pass up the white tuna if they have it. Â The top-notch miso soup is a great way to start your meal.
The service has greatly improved over the years, especially after the current owners took over. Â The owner (Jay) and his wife and their employees are friendly and welcoming. Â Sometimes on weekend nights, Jay will make a sake bomb for the entire restaurant - what fun!
If you can live with the dated and mismatched décor, you will love this cozy neighborhood gem.  I know I do!
This place is slipping for me. ...Compared to others in town, it's just not as good. If they are cutting corners..it's starting to show.
I've loved many experiences here, yet the last few have been very lack-luster. I can't send people here with the same verve I used to..it's just not as good as it once seemed to be.
I will always give it another shot, as I do when I love a place. But unfortunately, if I am going to spend $50+ on sushi, there are other places that now get my money.
I will miss you Osaka.
Great sushi! Â A coworker and I decided to try this out and I am glad we did! Â
They have 3 different seating areas, and it was a beautiful day so we opted for the outside seating.
To start we shared some edamame, it was real good, and they were not over salted like many places.
I had the lunch combo, miso soup, ginger salad, and the main dish was Korean Style Ribs (Garbi), they were excellent, it also came with rice (~1/4 cup), and 2 small pieces of California Roll. Â
They were small portions but were priced about right. Â We also decided to share the ichibahn sushi roll. Â Highly recommended.
Very awesome place, sushi was very good, I wish I could have eaten more! Â I will definitely return when I come back though here.
We JUST finished having dinner here! Our group of six people had so much fun at this restaurant! We loved the service from our waitress and had live entertainment courtesy of Alex H. who bravely undertook the Nuclear Roll Challenge. As a reward for him finishing his $8.95 Nuclear Roll, he got a free bottle of cold sake on the house! That was worth the trip alone. Oh, he's alright now but he may not be tomorrow morning! =D
Food-wise, it was standard sushi. I had their Ichiban Roll and a Spicy Salmon Roll. At about $20 total for both, it was a bit steep for the sizes. The rolls were not that large, actually quite small. I was nowhere near satisfied with the portion. I might want to snack in a few hours after this dinner, my rolls were that small.
On the bright side, because we had come on a Wednesday between 4:30pm and 6:30pm, the hot sakes were 2 for the price of 1 during happy hour. We indulged in a few of their flavored sakes, my favorite being the apple sake.
During Happy Hour, $4 sake bottles? Kampai!
Tonight I finally visited this place after years of meaning to. Â I walked in and it was busy, a little loud, but had a great vibe. Â The staff was very friendly. Â I was going to eat in at the bar solo, but it was so crowded I decided to get it to go. Â Sauce from the roll soaked into the rice of the sushi. Â The sushi itself was pretty good, but the portions were the smallest I've ever seen. Â I actually don't mind them being small, but the price should match. Â
I will go back again and dine in, but right now, I'm not super impressed.
Love, love, love...
After multiple suggestions by my boss, I finally decided to check this place out. I have to say that this place is awesome. I am not usually a fan of yellow tail because of its texture, but the yellow tail at Osaka was awesome. After Jared and I finished our meal, the entire restaurant was given a complimentary sake bomb. What more can you ask for? Great fish, great prices, friendly and attentive service, and a free shot!
Besides, you can't beat the people watching here. From the guy sitting behind me with a painted eagle on the back of his shirt to the first date happening behind Jared, we were more than entertained for a couple of hours.
Next time, happy hour!
Most of all, Lori's review best describes my sense of Osaka, too.
It was my birthday today, and the kids recommended Osaka. Â It is my son & his partner's favorite sushi destination since they moved to Denver last fall. Â And I can see why.
I do agree with what several of the other reviewers have pointed out -- it is a bit pricey here. Â I did notice that.
The quality of the food and the portions are all very good. Â I don't do sushi, and thus I ordered the teriyaki salmon with the tempura. Â Best tempura ever and excellent salmon. Â It came with salad and miso soup, for $17. Â Gigantic portions. Â Would have been enough food for 2. Â I shared majorly with my son and daughter. Â
My daughter ordered some interesting sushi. Â She did not like the taste of the yellowtail, and returned it. Â The waitperson graciously brought her some tuna instead. Â She loved that. Â Later, she brought a generous cash tip over to the sushi bar. Â Good style, daughter, good style!
My son & his girlfriend both ordered the yakisoba noodles. Â He got them with chicken, she got hers vegetarian. Â They seemed to enjoy it.
I really like the blossoming flower tea. Â It was fun to watch the little tiny dried bud blossom into a full colorful flower in the clear glass pot.
Nice place to go for a birthday....
Just like the descriptor next to those 3 stars, Osaka is A-OK. I mean, it's SUSHI, which I love, so it's already got that going for it. But it's a study in checks and balances here: for every positive, there's a negative.
Since I'm already having a cruddy day today, I'll start with the negatives. The service, for example, is beyond ridiculous. There were times when we wouldn't see our server for a week or more! Okay, maybe not a whole week... but REALLY long stretches of time. There were several times when one of our group actually had to get up from the table to order more sushi/order a beer/get our check/etc. Not okay.
The other glaring negative is the prices. Osaka is REALLY expensive for what it is. I mean yes... it's good... but it's no better (or worse) than any of Denver's other top-tier sushi joints, just more expensive. You're certainly not paying for ambiance, so where's this extra tax going? The decor is NOT Zen (not even as nice as Wasabi's bathrooms), NOT hip (no corrugated metal and edgy art a la Hapa), NOT quasi-authentic Japanese-ish (Japon, Tazu), and NOT dark-romantic chic (hello Sushi Den). It's strip-mall stylie to the max... and were they playing Kenny G at top volume in the bathrooms? I think they were. So where do they get off charging what they do (in the neighborhood of $12.95 for most of their signature rolls)? I don't know. Maybe Kenny G gets a high royalty cut.
But like I said, for every negative there's a positive. It IS tasty sushi! Although I do consider myself a fan, I'm certainly no sushi purist or sushi snob, and it's definitely not beneath me to order rolls. I love rolls, and Osaka certainly has a huge variety of very creative ones. From the high-rent list, we sampled Zombie Brains and The Sensual Roll. Good, but you'd be just as well off sticking with the more basic ones. The Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab, a standard) is well done here, and the tasty, crispy goodness of the crab is most certainly not skimped on. Another hit: the Yellowtail and Scallion Roll. We all know the best fish is saved for nigiri, so to indulge in rolls all night is the equivalent of going to a Champagne Bar and ordering PBR... but if you happen to like PBR, what's the problem?
There are so many sushi options in Denver, and I love when my homestate Cali friends mock us like we're landlocked hicks with no concept or clue. They only have to come here and taste! Denver knows sushi, landlocked though we may be. For your money, there are better options than Osaka... but then again, there are far, far worse.
I love sushi rolls. I don't care whether or not they are unauthentic or kitschy or whatever. Sushi is delicious and sushi is often expensive. If I am going to drop $25/person on average my raw fish better come wrapped up in something and looking more awesome than anything I could make at home.
A friend of mine has this wonderful theory about sushi restaurants. It's all about the availability of parking. If there is abundant parking the sushi probably isn't very good, too much supply, not enough demand and not enough attention paid in the kitchen. Thus, strip mall sushi joints are usually given the brush off. Well, Nobu Malibu is located in a strip mall of sorts (for Malibu) so that theory isn't 100% accurate, but it's a good starting point. Until, I went to Osaka.
Ever since arriving in Denver and learning about the sushi crazy consumption of Denver-ites I have been fascinated and similarly consumed. I have ventured to several sushi restaurants often being surprised at the high quality and consistency. Osaka is one of those rare finds thanks in large part to its bright and clean presentation and its wide variety of sushi. The menu that is presented to you is similar in size and breadth to the great mythic diner menus found all over New Jersey. Similar to those fabulous one stop gastronomy shops from the east coast, Osaka is able to competently and pleasantly produce a tremendous array of cuisine even though all of Osaka's offerings are of the Japanese variety.
Now, for the rolls. As I mentioned earlier I love sushi rolls. I used to think Banzai was a sushi roll mecca until I got a firecracker roll with a bug inside of it. Every masticated piece immediately divulged for inspection and ridicule. Thankfully, we have Osaka. This places has a tremendous variety of rolls and they are all thoughtfully and carefully prepared. I have yet to find a nestling critter inside any of their scrumptious rolls.
Osaka is seriously casual, as are most dining destinations in Denver. However, do not let the casual interior beguile you from discovering the sophisticated and consistent sushi goodness that is Osaka. Abundant parking only raises the threat that this place become too popular.
So, I went back...cause that's what I do.
It was HH this time and 2 - 4 -1 sake's, how can you screw that up?
Well, how about they never bring your 2nd sake... or ask if you want anything else.
Dude
The sushi was actually better this time, but I don't know what's going on with this place.
It was like a bad 2nd date. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
Once again, Yelp came through for me in a pinch. I had some girlfriends in town and we were dying for some sushi, but it was Friday night so places like Sushi Den and Sasa were out of the question. Â I go to the Bally's across the street so I've seen this spot hidden across the street many times and always wanted to try it.
Well, it was amazing! Very good quality sushi at reasonable prices. My favorite was the firecracker roll and shrimp tempura roll (something I usually order whenever I go out for sushi, since I'm a total puss when it comes to sushi) My friends were also very pleased with what they ordered. Â If you are ever craving decent sushi, thats cheaper than the Den and not as crowded, go here!
The owner was awesome. He went around doing sake shots with every table.
I've been everywhere. Â Everywhere. Â This is the only place I'll go anymore.
I've been to Sushi Den. Â It was good. Â It wasn't Osaka.
I've been to Japon. Â It was good. Â It wasn't Osaka.
I've been to Hapa. Â It was okay. Â It also, was not Osaka.
I figure since I compare every Japanese restaurant I go to with Osaka, I should probably just review Osaka. Â
Since moving from California, I hadn't had yellowtail and salmon that melts in your mouth the way it does here. Â The fish is fresh, they have a great supplier, and the people are super helpful.
I have had to make special  orders or have requested items that were not on their menu before and the sushi chefs embrace the challenge and serve up a gorgeous platter.
Their menu has expanded much over the past year, but I still state that anything with their salmon or yellowtail in it is the best I could find in the city. Â Here is my suggested menu for the meat eaters:
-Start off with Magic Mushrooms. Â They are avocado wrapped in salmon and baked in an aoli cream sauce. Â Dear god, they are heaven.
-If you're into it, hit up some miso soup. Â There's is good and comforting.
- Sushi course: Spicy Tuna hand roll, salmon skin roll, Playgirl Roll.
- Nigiri: Salmon, Yellowtail, Scallop, Fresh Oyster.
- Dessert: Mochi Ice Cream, Mango and Red Bean are my favorites.
For the vegetarians, there's more good news. Â They always have an array of options for you. Â We have ordered portobello nigiri, sweet potato tempura rolls, asparagus rolls, and all four of their dinners. Â They are all fabulous.
They're never actually that busy except for the off night a big party shows up. Â The people are nice, and I've always gotten great service there. Â Sit at the sushi bar for a show, if you like. Â I have seen them kill fresh fish there before.
Osaka Sushi,
I want to like you... but on Tuesday June 10 2008, you indeed disappoint me.. well that includes 11 other of my friends.
The sushi you provide is ok to my standards though I would love to LOVE your Volcano Roll...
Well, its a Tuesday, so that is why we made a reservation on a TUESDAY and on this faithful Tuesday June 10 2008, Osaka Sushi was indeed shorthanded.
From what we got to know after the "whole ordeal" ~ please do read if you want and have the time at the bottom of this review...
1. Â One of the sushi chefs was on leave.
2. Â One of the cooks was also on leave.
Left 3 waitstaffs handling everyone on this Faithful Tuesday Night. Â Our waitstaff on that evening was Mike. Â Perhaps he was new or perhaps he just had a bad hair day.
You see, the frustration came to a boil, when all our group were seated @ the Patio. Â We were there @ 19:00hrs aka 07:00 PM. Â At most everyone in the group who has RSVP-ed for the "feasting" came @ 19:15hrs aka 07:15 PM by the latest. Â By then only some of us were given the menu. Â I requested 11 other menus for everyone in the group yet they did not came as requested.
Only by about 19:30hrs aka 07:30 PM our order were given  to the waitstaff, since most of the time our waitstaff were missing in action.  The first order served to our table ONLY CAME @ 20:30hrs aka 08:30 PM.  Does it means it takes the CHEF or the COOK to come out with our appetizers and even some drinks or wine 1 hour of waiting time??...
Osaka Sushi, by these time, everyone felt our time were wasted coz only like 4 of us in the group got their MAIN ENTREES completed @ 21:00hrs aka 09:00 PM while the rest of us of 8 were served only with (drinks) of water, wine and hot tea or just appetizers... :(
ONLY after my fren approach the MANAGER of Osaka Sushi, he apologized due to the HORRENDOUS SERVICE profusely to her. Â Why not with the whole group????? Â We want to have a good time yet with this service and execuses you gave us (see the above explanations about the staffs/chef/cooks) we left with no choice but to endure the service as an act of kindness. Â
We do not want to create any "madness" but all the food were out ONLY by 22:15hrs aka 10:15 PM. Â Why is this happening to us????? Â We are good customers but yet we were treated as if no one cared???
See, OSAKA Sushi did not expect a TUESDAY NIGHT TO BE A BUSY NIGHT, but isnt it, if you want to run a restaurant you Need To Expect The Unexpected.. Â We choose to reserve our dinner on a Tuesday night so as to shun away from the crowd of the Friday evenings or the weekenders...
Yet OSAKA Sushi cant uphold your service... Tsk Tsk Tsk...
I'll be afraid to return.... It makes me feel so sad to write this review. Â But someone has to write it, coz this is what my group had to go thru on that faithful night of Tuesday June 10 2008.
Perhaps it would be safer if you come only with your partner...
For the rest of the YELPERS who had your lunch or dinner before us, you are indeed very lucky... and the customers who voted in 5280 as the TALK of The Town you are indeed very very lucky...
Behind Rubio's Mexican in that weird "Belcaro" strip mall is one of the best sushi places in Denver - Osaka Sushi.
The quality of sushi is always very good and the service is quite friendly. The chef's specials are great if you feel like trying something different. Don't be afraid to ask what a "playboy roll" is....
Oysters and calamari are also delicious and fresh.
Better, cheaper and less crowded than Sushi Den. Give it a shot!
It's nice to feel welcome and the proprietors at Osaka always make you feel that way the moment you walk in the door. Â And they never neglect to thank you for your patronage when you leave. Â Some may find that hokey, but I kinda like it.
Hidden off of Colorado Blvd, Osaka is still kind of a "local knowledge" type of place. Â Sushi Den, Hapa, and Japon may get more word of mouth buzz, but for the money and sense of belonging, I'll take Osaka.
There's always a glut of off-menu nigiri/sashimi specials, which is a good indicator of freshness at a sushi joint. Â The decor is a little wacky...kinda like when ever the mood struck them to add something, they just went with the feeling. Â No sense of Feng Shui, but that just adds to the charm.
The overall experience at Osaka was average. Â The food gets three stars for taste, but is overpriced. Â I don't think of myself as frugal but, $3.50 for a very small serving of edamame? Â Really? Â Hmmm. Â Rolls and sashimi were also a little on the high side. Luckily, Mack N. was footing the bill, and as you may already have read...He can afford it.
Atmosphere and service rate two stars it's in a strip mall and you don't forget that. Â
I wouldn't warn friends and yelpers NOT to go here, but I won't be back anytime soon.
I was pleasantly surprised to find such good sushi in Denver! Â
I sat at the sushi bar and ordered some hamachi sashimi, unagi nigiri and one of their specialty rolls - I forgot the name, but it was the super spicy one with maguro, hamachi, wasabi tobiko, diced jalepeno peppers and a piece of shrimp tempura inside. Â DELICIOUS. Â The hamachi was super fresh and just melted in my mouth. Â Unagi was just as perfect.
This San Francisco girl was happy to indulge in some sushi so far from home. Â YUMMY!
Just because you're in Glendale doesn't mean you have to dine on inhuman portions of corporate sludge!
Be prepared to be greeted in boisterous Japanese from behind the sushi bar as you come in and thanked as you leave. The wait staff is kind and even sweet.
Everything I've tried here, I've liked. It's tasty, fresh, rolled nicely and not too big.
I brought my parents here for sushi. They are not sushi eaters. But they loved it. Â I think that speaks volumes.
Osaka's is kid-friendly, too. I can't think of another sushi place where I've seen kids every time I've gone there!
If only I didn't have to sit on those chairs...
UPDATE 4/14/07:
I have to give Osaka's another star. Last night I called ahead to let them know we were coming with 6 adults and 2 kids, they said no problem. When we got there, there were two place settings that had rubber bands around the tops of the chopsticks for the kids! Such a nice touch!!! Â The man who took our reservation, who I suspect is the owner, also brought lollipops to the kids. Â There was a couple with a baby sitting at the sushi bar. When the baby started crying, he picked her up and she stopped!! He carried her around for almost 20 minutes while mom and dad ate, even bringing her around to meet all the other little kids in the place. Â It was so sweet, I vowed to return and up their sparklies!!
