REALLY GREAT FISH FRY. awesome non-mayo based slaw, great seasoned fries; meal served with a tiny donut :)
wonderful patio (we only dine at oscar's during patio season -- not wild about the in-bar dining experience.
service is pretty good, not always awesome, but whatevs. the quality of the fish fry is worth a little sass.
oscar's also (obviously) has a fantastic burger selection and a decent amount of fried appetizers, as well as a full bar.
enjoy!
I definitely love the burgers at Oscar's. I know there is a huge debate about the best burgers in Milwaukee.....and Oscar's isn't my favorite, but it blows away that crap that Kopp's serves, and is much better than the self proclaimed best burgers in milwaukee at sobelmans.
The burgers are a good quality, and come with a couple different ways of topping it off. The bun is a little overwhelming, but it's a good quality bun so I can't complain that much about it.
The service stands out as well. I've never gotten good service at Sobelman's....not once, but these guys take customer service to another level.
These burgers are no fuss way to get down with some quality meat with fresh toppings and a delicious bun. So what that no one greeted our group on the way in... we figured it out... and our waitress was friendly.
I'll be honest... this isn't my favorite burger in Milwaukee, but I CERTAINLY wouldn't mind coming back. It was a good honest burger with good honest fries for a good honest price.
If you like Sobelmann's, then you will LOVE Oscar's. Their burgers are just as amazing as Sobelmann's but kicked up a notch.
We started with the big basket, and at $6.50 it is a great deal, we shared it between 4 people. Everyone ended up ordering the Big "O" burger, because I mean how could you not after reading it's description? This burger was awesome! The only downside to this burger, is now that I've tasted how amazing chorizo is on a burger I don't know if I can enjoy a chorizo-less burger. I didn't even use the side of guacamole- it really wasn't needed on the burger (but made a good dip for fries!) Speaking of their fries, they are delicious! I don't know what they put on them, but I honestly don't even care- I just want more!
The servors were very pleasant and friendly. We had the misfortune of being seated next to a very rude guest, and our servor bought us a round of free shots as an apology. Completely unnesscary on his part, but o so thoughtful (I will always prefer a free shot over anything being comped!)
Oscar's I will be back- hopefully on your awesome patio!
Oscar's was for a couple of years my favorite burger place in the country. I would find myself craving their burgers, so when I recently came home to the Milwaukee area I decided to go with my mom to grab burgers at Oscar's.
Our service was awful and we arrived there before crowds started to show up. We weren't greeted as we usually are and we waited for a few minutes before anyone even said "We'll be right with you." In the times I've been going to Oscar's, this has never happened.
I ordered a glass of Louie's Demise from Milwaukee Brewing Company with the Big Gringo while my mom had a brandy old-fashioned sweet with the Big Hongo. Everything was fine with my glass of beer--I will give them props for having a great selection of beers from local breweries--but my mom commented that her brandy old-fashioned sweet wasn't nearly as good as it had been in the past.
Our burgers arrived and my Gringo wasn't as flavorful as it usually was, but my mother's Hongo was good. Our fries, however, were cold, which is really unfortunate because I love Oscar's fries. Finally, time came for our check and we waited before we finally motioned to the bar for someone to bring us our check. I left my card on the table and after a while I realized it would just work better if I marched up to the bar and handed them my check and card.
Granted, by this time lots of people had come into Oscar's and it was more crowded. I have been to numerous restaurants when they are packed and I have never had to wait long for a check or for the check to be picked up by the server.
This was very disappointing because in the past the service has been much better. I've never had to wait this long and my food has never been this disappointing. It's sad to see a restaurant I used to enjoy fall relatively quickly into disappointment. I think I'll stick to getting burgers at Kopp's for a while.
I was really looking forward to trying the burgers here after having such a good experience at Sobelman's. I assumed all the hyped burger spots in Milwaukee would be equally as good. It was probably a bad sign that the restaurant was empty for lunch on a Sunday but I had to give it a chance.
My boyfriend and I tried the cheese curds, Big O burger and Gringo burger. Everything looked good but had no flavor. The fries weren't very tasty either.
Looking for a good burger? Go to Sobelman's.
Simple and honest burgers. Period.
For those in search of the perfect pub burger, Oscar's may be your best bet. Some places will try and dress up something to make it deluxe but it makes a real statement when your present an item at its simplest and it holds its own. I am not a burger connoisseur by any means but I knew in one bite that this was a force to be reckoned with.
I enjoyed The Big Foot ($6.75): 8 oz. Premium Black Angus Burger, Crumbled Blue & Boursin Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion. It was cooked to a perfect medium and I had over half for a meal in the future to take home with me. Why didn't I finish my meal? I blame the Oscars Big Basket ($6.50): Battered Green Beans, Frickle Chips, Seasoned Fries, Cheese Nuggets, Chicken Tenders. Very generous portions and tasty morsels.
The place was crowded when we arrived and it took a few moments to figure out how to put our name in for a table. There wasn't clear direction and that made it a bit confusing for a first visit. A malted beverage helped brave through the moderate wait time.
There also seemed to be a "team" service approach at the table. Several different members of the wait staff stopped by to check on our drinks, order and clear the table. It was nice that everyone helped out to make the service experience as pleasant as possible.
I would recommend that anyone who states old standby ABC has the best burger in Milwaukee. I've been to those places too and for someone that doesn't seek out a burger, I'm a fan. At least give it a shot and don't say I didn't warn you. You might be hooked.
Other items of note: No need to dress up. Oscar's is a Milwaukee, working-class bar full of good-hearted, wonderful people. Be yourself and have a good time with no frills, just like their burgers. Your personality and charms will speak for themselves as you don your comfortable jeans and enjoy watching the game.
I really like Oscars but have noticed a few things in my last two recent visits.
#1) there is an issue with the staff being attentive enough to handle the business. My last visit I was the one being neglected. Yesterday, several other customers were being neglected and coming up to the bar to say so, which is how I heard them. I felt their pain.
#2) the plates are teeny tiny small. I ordered onion rings w my burger instead of fries and I received TWO of them. 2 little onion rings. It's like someone was joking with me and laughing back in the kitchen. The plates are so darn small you can't fit much else besides the sandwich. Is this a cost savings or profitability measure? If anything, bump me up fifty cents and let me get a couple more onion rings.
The bloody mary's are good just lack enough spice for my taste. But still very good toppings. The burger meat tastes to be of high quality, too.
They just need to fix a few things and put customers first.
When I am craving a burger, this is one of my go to places.
Oscar's has a neighborhood pub feel to it, but not one of those places where if you aren't a regular you feel weird.
The Big O burger with chipotle jack cheese, jalepenos, chorizo, bacon and guacamole is such a flavorful combination. I usually don't like fries, but their homemade fries are so good.
They have a good beer selection and service is friendly and fast.
Burgers are some of the best in Milwaukee, hands down. I have always gotten great service. Win-win for me.
I usually get the Big Aloha. Ham, Pineapple, and avocado on a burger? You betcha!
Just a really fun bar to get really good burgers at. I haven't been to Oscars just to get drinks but I would have no objections to it.
One of the best burger joints in Milwaukee. Their draft beer selection has a great mix of local crafts as well as traditional mainstream beers (I tend to go for the crafts) at some of the lowest prices you are going to find in the city.
Their service is excellent and the owner is very involved in his business, so you know that you are always going to receive the best service possible. One time while I was on a pub crawl with my rugby team there someone stole my beer (absolute scum) and they replaced it without question, guaranteeing my loyal business for as long as I live. Â
I almost forgot to mention their amazing burgers. Their burger is 500x better than Sobelman's. They offer some unique, but not over the top selections for starters and they also cook it the way you ask. It is harder than you think to get a burger medium rare the way I like it. But at Oscar's I can always count on my burger coming bloody and juicy just the way I asked for it. They also put Parmesan cheese on the fries, which is a nice accent. The cheese they use on everything is great as well.
I could honestly go on and on about how much I love this place; however, to make it simple I'll summarize it by saying that they have great burgers made just the way you like them, an excellent selection of beer at an affordable price and customer service that cannot be beat. It is a must try if you're in town for a game, to visit friends or just because.
We found this place on yelp and Im so glad we did because its my new favorite pub and grill. They have great prices and more importantly amazing burgers. Â The meat just tastes great, doesn't matter which burger you get, they're all good. My only regret was trying the $2 mystery beer, I got stuck with a Milwaukees best LIGHT (puke) I drink all kinds of beer but that was just cruel.
Review Source:Dear Oscar's Bloody Mary: You complete me. Your little piclked veggie friends pale in comparison to the GIANT strip of bacon that tops your tomato-ey/vodka goodness. Seriously, this bacon is perfectly thick and crispy and yummy. I almost bought a t-shirt once (and constantly regret not doing so) that said "Everything tastes better with bacon". Â I feel like Oscar's agrees with me.
I was in the mood for a juicy artery clogging burger and man did their Big-O burger hit the spot!. It has 2 cheeses (Smoked Gouda and Chipotle Jack), Hickory Bacon, Chorizo, fried onions, jalapenos....and Guacamole on the side which you absolutely must smear all over your burger. Holy Heart Attack Batman, this is the best burger ever!!
The staff is super friendly. Not a huge place, but comfy and very family friendly based on all the families with kids that I saw. I am new to MKE, and this place has all of the things that made me fall in love with MKE. Good food, good drinks, geuninely nice people, and an atmosphere of fun.
Small menu, which leads me to believe based on my experience that they focus on quality rather than quantity. Â
I will happily be back. Probably for a Bloody and a burger to kill my next hangover which let's face it is just around the corner. If you want a Sobelman's type burger without the hour wait, go to Oscar's. You will not be disappointed.
The difference between a good burger and a great burger rests upon the bun selection. Â At Oscar's, this is definitely the case. Â Soft pillowy buns direct from Wild Flour Bakery sets these burgers apart and making them one of the best in Milwaukee. Â I went with the Big O. Â How can you go wrong with a half pound burger, friend onions, smoked gouda, chipotle jack, chorizo, jalapenos, bacon and a side of guacamole. Â I ordered mine medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. Â If I had to be picky, the only small negative would be that I felt the meat should have been seasoned more. Â
Burgers come with homemade fries and with a price under $8, it is a steal.
I can't forget to talk about the great service here as well. Â Extremely welcoming, we were greeted at the door by the waitstaff. Â Great beers on tap as well.
My looking at the reviews...the secret is definitely out. Â Oscar's is one of the best in Milwaukee. Â Go there. Â Eat. Drink. Â Be Amazed!
I just love Oscar's. Â I have to be upfront and admit that I did a deal with him to help him get the bus he has, he is the nicest guy to work with. Â But the food and drinks and service here are excellent. Â Oscar came from working in the valley at Sobelman's but he and his wife wanted their own place. Â It was a dream. Â It took years to find the right location. Â While Sobelman's is great, I love Oscar's, it has a few more selections, still a small menu though. Â His burgers are half-pound, not 1/3 pound, so you don't have to get a double to get filled up. Â The fries have a wonderful taste to them, not just salted. Â And burger and fries begins at around $5. Â It's so good, prepared how you want it and if you go to his facebook page you will see he really cares about his customers happiness. Â This is a Milwaukee gem for sure!
Review Source:I have been here twice and my first visit wasn't more than 3 stars. Â My last visit was a solid 5 stars. Â I can do basic math....that's an average of 4 stars.
The first time I came it was crowded and service seemed nonexistent. Â The food was greasy, just ok, and the whole place had a serious housefly problem (granted, warm weather, but other places seem to manage this).
This time It was busy, but not crowded. Â We had a drink at the bar while we waited for a table. Â Their waiting-far-a-table system was mysterious, but functional. Â We ordered the appetizer sampler platter. Â Greasy and delicious! Â Be warned - they aren't kidding about the singular 'chicken finger' referenced in the menu description. Â You only get one.
I had a Big Gringo burger, it was good. Â Greasy and cheesy. Â A friend had the Big O and devoured it.
Prices are very good and you get plenty of food for the price.
Great place for inducing a nap! Â Terrible place for sticking to your diet.
Tonight was my first time eating at Oscar's and it was yummy!
We walked in and it was really busy. There was very little direction for seating, only one table available in the front and one small table available in the back. We were ushered to the back and seated. The server said we would have to wait, but the hostess told her the front table canceled.
We ordered right away, though, there isn't an extensive menu.
I had the veggie burger with tomato and avocado with sweet potato fries ($1.00 upcharge), my boyfriend had the Aloha burger (ham, pineapple, avocado on a patty & bun) with sweet potato fries and a Dale's Pale Ale to wash it down, and my cousin had the classic cheeseburger (regular fries). The chipotle aoli that came on the side was great to dip the fries in.
Both beef patties were ordered medium-rare and came medium rare. They were juicy and while a little messy, they was messy in a good way. The combination of toppings on the Aloha burger were nice and complimented each other.
The prices were super reasonable and I thought the veggie burger was good, though a little crumbly. I will definitely go back, but next time, it's nacho-time!
I ate at Oscar's Pub and Grill with my wife and her co-worker about 3 weeks ago on a Monday after work. For a Monday they had a descent clientele there. We were greeted right away since there was only 3 of us we sat at the bar. The Bartender was quite friendly but it seemed like it was the end of her shift so she was doing a lot of her side work while attending to customers.
The reason why we went there, what we expected and what we received is why I am giving this place only 2 stars. When you Google Oscars with the title "Oscar's Pub and Grill" appears the statement "Best Burgers in Milwaukee". Now I know a few places like AJ Bombers and Soblemann's claim they have the "Best Burger" in Milwaukee but I have tried them all out and they are actually quite terrible. So I thought maybe Oscar's pub will take the trophy finally.
After we ordered drinks my first question to the bartender was "Are your burgers Fresh or Frozen?". She replied "Oh they are fresh made and they are really really good". So I thought finally a fresh homemade burger patty. So I ordered a cheese burger cooked "Medium" with some jalapeno peppers and mayo on the side thinking I will add them if I feel like it needs some flavor but I was really hoping for a nice juicy well seasoned burger with melted cheese on it. My wife and her co-worker ordered specialty burgers all cooked to "medium" heat.
Here came the burgers, I took the first bite and spit it back out. I asked the server again, "You said the burgers were made fresh, are they fresh burger patties made in house or were they frozen patties", She replies "Oh yeah they are frozen patties but made to order". I wanted leave right then and there. If you ever work at a restaurant and a customer asks the "fresh or frozen" question, don't be stupid to think he/she means whether your food was made last week and put in the freezer it means whether you had used any frozen ingredients.
So another place claiming to be "Milwaukee's Best Burger" joint but ends up failing miserably. My wife's burger tasted good overall because it had all these other toppings and sauces on it. But if their burger itself tasted like cardboard then that's not a "best burger". Anyone can slap on tasty sauces on a frozen piece of meat and make it taste good but if your piece of meat itself taste like cardboard then whatever!!!
When you think of "beer and burger" pubs precariously perched on the perimeter of the Menomonee Valley, you probably think of that OTHER place, on the north side of the great industrial canyon. Â The one that has gone from well-kept secret to international sensation....the one that (in my opinion) has lost a lot of its lowbrow, no-nonsense, casual charm as it continues to get bigger, broader and more bold.
Trust me: give Oscar's a year, and people will be saving "Sobelwho?"
Pierce Street is not exactly on anyone's beaten path, but it's a path that I've worn into the earth in the six months since my first Big Gringo. Â Serving specialty burgers that combine all of your favorite guilty pleasures in one bite, Â and appetizers that may or may not destroy all your good dining habits, this place knows how to host a hangover lunch, workplace happy hour, or sporting event. Â They even offer a delivery service that brings the Oscar's experience to you, in those carb-crazy moments where you simply can't be seen by ANYONE.
Restaurant service is speedy, snappy and sassy: the way that it should be at a pub lunch, rather than the raggedy, rushed and robotic service you might get on the other end of the valley. Â I can't say how much I appreciate having space to, well, breathe during lunch or dinner.
While not yet internationally famous for their Bloody Marys or nationally televised for their burgers, Oscar's serves it up right. Â And that's why they're my new best-kept Milwaukee secret. Â Make them yours, too.
Former Sobleman's cooks start their own bar? Said bar not only has a better tap selection and less of a crazy local/tourist crowd? How can you go wrong?
The answer is in The Big O, which isn't to say the burger was bad. In fact, it had most of the makings of an awesome sandwich. 8 oz patty, chipotle jack, smoked gouda, bacon, chorizo, onions, jalapenos - it tasted as good as it sounds. My only problem was in the seasoning of the burger, which wasn't much seasoning at all. I can understand the reasoning - after all, the chorizo, bacon, and cheese have a lot of salt in themselves, but it didn't translate to the burger as well as it may have hoped, and as a result I was left with an underseasoned burger. It's a misgiving a good many burger joints make, and otherwise the entire package was quite nice, if not a little messy, and certainly worthy of succession of what was previously known as Milwaukee's Best Burger.
Still, the construction of the sandwich showed competence, and I was far from leaving with a bad taste in my mouth. Combine that with a great beer selection and an establishment that isn't nearly as crowded as the burger joints that have been on television, and Oscar's is well on their way to being something special.
A bunch of us came here because of all the great reviews of their burgers. It's a pretty small joint that looks like your typical pub. They have tvs for the sports but it was an off day when we went so they were playing palladia (channel).
A lot of us got the 'Big O.' It looked great coming out. Nice, shiny (from the light oil on top), fluffy buns with a big center of stuff. Side of fries and guac. I liked the taste of the burger, but the burger meat patty itself was just not great. That's the killer. A burger should always have a SOLID patty as a foundation. This burger I had was not juicy and the meat crumbled as I bit into it. It was like eating taco meat packed into a patty...just didn't work. And the little dinky side of guac? why? it was too small to even taste it with the burger. Sadness!
The fries, however, were DELISH! I would go back for a beer and fries next time.
Oscar's gets a solid 5 stars for serving up a giant, delicious, excellent burger with a ton of toppings without the hefty price tag.
I went with the standard Big O, which was topped with a blend of two melted cheese, jalapenos, onions, chorizo, bacon, and a side of guac. With a long list of toppings like that, the burger still managed to taste distinctly good and not like a big pile of mush. Although my burger was cooked more to a medium than my desired medium-rare, the burger was juicy and greasy enough to make it seem tender inside. Surprisingly, the patty wasn't seasoned enough to my taste, and even with the bacon and chorizo, the burger tasted a bit undersalted.
Also the fries are excellent, crispy and well seasoned.
Great burger. Great value. Will definitely be back for more.
Love the burgers (And the veggie burgers). Love the people. It's a total south side bar...Family friendly, killer food, local beers on tap, game on the T.V. Â Makes a south side girl feel right at home.
Prices and service are good plus an inventive menu. I really have no complaints.
You must try their burgers before you declare your favorite in MKE!
As of right now, Oscars is getting 5 stars. They had a lot to live up to, all of my friends have been raving about it, and I finally gave it a try.
Tried the Big Foot, they had me at Boursin cheese. The fries are to die for!!! Super reasonably priced and I left feeling beyond stuffed.
Waitstaff is out of this world nice, was greeted by the owner and seated right away. Everyone was smiling there and having a great time. Can't wait to come back and try some of their apps and (another) burger.
This is the the neighborhood bar that I would want to be a regular at!!!
The staff are so friendly and welcoming! I've been there twice so far and both times the bartenders and servers greeted me with a welcoming smile.
The pub itself is just the right size... not to large or small. I would imagine that during a busy night of the week you may have to wait for a table. However, both times I was there I was able to be seated right away.
If you like to drink beer- this is a great affordable pub for that. There is a decent beer selection and it is extremely reasonably priced.
As far as the menu goes- you go there basically to eat a burger. They do have a veggie burger option- which my friend ordered. She was happy with the veggie burger option. There are other things to order on the menu- but the specialty is burgers.
I ordered different burgers each time I went there and I was very satisfied each time. The second time I ordered a blue cheese burger which was AMAZING! I loved the cheese on the burger. The burgers aren't too greasy and they are a decent size. They come with a side of fries which are also good.
I will be going back to Oscar's again in the future. You can easily have a few beers and a meal for around $20.
Great little burger place... Â lots of interesting options and a veggie burger! Â Got my veg burger as is on the menu, next time I'd kick it up w/more toppings like offered on the regular burgers. Â My husband's burger was good, high quality meat but sad to have a few grissley bites.
Appetizers look great, need to go back and try some of those. Â Service is great, very friendly when you walk in. Â Place is loud, difficult to try to converse but a good time.
Happy to upgrade!
Burgers are absolutely delicious. I typically stick to my hamburger with my favorite fixins (lettuce/tom/mustard), but the specialty burgers are also a good way to go. I still can't get over the classic hamburger is $5 and include fries! Great deal.
Service is middle of the road but very prompt - and I wish my medium ordered burger would come a little more pink, but alas. These are good burgers.
Oh my gosh. Oscar's dishes up a truly delicious burger. THIS is my new favorite burger joint.
Oscar's delivers everything I want in a badass burger experience. Friendly, clean pub atmosphere, cheap, delicious beer, and the juiciest burger that ever existed loaded with amazing melty cheese and creative toppings.
My friend and I arrived around 6:30 and were greeted by the bartender. We grabbed a seat in the bar area. The vibe was very family friendly, and there were plenty of kids seated on barstools. (Probably not so much as the night wears on - but it's nice to know I could bring my little one if I wanted).
We ordered a couple of brews, and glanced over the menu. We decided to split the Big Gringo (White cheddar & American Cheese with Bacon) and the Big Aloha (Ham, Havarti, Pineapple, and Avocado). We figured something simple and something a little adventurous to get the feel for Oscar's range.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man. Those burgers were insane. My ONLY complaint was the avocado on the Big Aloha. It was sliced way too thick, and really didn't add anything to the burger. It was just a big flavorless chunk of mushiness that I removed after one bite. Maybe an avocado spread instead? But the bacon on the Big Gringo and the pineapple on the Big Aloha were perfect touches to an already perfect burger patty.
AND THE FRIES. Holy crap, the fries. Best fries I've ever had in my life, hands down. I must quote my friend Colin A. and concur that they are dusted "with love" or loads of garlic and cheese. Or magic. It doesn't matter, they're amazing.
The bill was super cheap, but we were charged $0.25 for a mystery item. We didn't order any extra sauces or modify our meal in any way, so maybe it was for splitting the burgers? Whatever. If Oscar's wants another quarter, I'll just chalk it up as a "satisfaction fee" and pay it happily.
So I found out about Oscars via a Yelp search on good places to eat after we landed in Milwaukee. Got the rental car and headed straight here. Walked in and sat at the bar and was greeted by the bartender John. He helped us figure out the best beer for us and poured it. We told them our story and Oscar walked by and gave us our first beer for free. We were also introduced to a lovely lady named CeeCee who was helping behind the bar.
We were there on a Friday night so they had a Friday night fish fry going on. We ordered on order of the Fish Fry and a "The Big Foot" burger. OMG --- both were amazing!!! I can't say enough good about both of them.
We sat and finished up our food and beers and headed out. Loved this place and will definitely be back the next time I'm in town.
I do not take this lightly, not at all but I am committing. Oscar's has the best hamburgers that I have ever had. Ever had.
I love this place for a cold brew and a delightfully designed piece of meat. I live closer to AJ Bombers but really enjoy driving out to get a great burger from Oscars. Service is great and they have air conditioning now (last time I lived in MKE they didn't but I still loved it and ate there). Generous sized parking lot too.
Hrm, seems I forgot to check in to a spot...
We were visiting a friend in Milwaukee and wanted to meet some of his friends from school. Â After tossing some ideas back and forth, we decided to try Oscar's for their "bombass burgers." Â I have to admit--they were pretty bomb!
Everyone suggested the Big "O" (which Hubs did end up getting) but which sounded too spicy for my palate. Â Hubs said he loved it though and it was perfectly cooked. Â I got the Gringo which was soooo yummy. Â The bacon, YUMMMM, just really completed the meal. Â The garlic parmesan fries on the side were awesome as well!
I did end up getting the Bloody Mary that my friend suggested (not that I like Bloody Marys) which was pretty good too. Â I love that it came with a little salad (haha) and a beer back. Â I was bummed that I didn't get to choose my beer, but that's okay. Â Again, came with a thick slice of bacon -- which ALWAYS makes things better.
Very chill spot in MKE.
Oscars just OUSTED AJ Bombers as the best burger in town!
A couple friends and I went to Oscar's last Saturday night before a night out drinking. Â We caught a basketball game, had a few beers, and ate easily the best burgers I've ever had in my life.
The only real issue is the menu is relatively limited, BUT I guarantee you that you will find something that blows your mind. Â These burgers are a slab of 100% angus beef toasted buttered buns with cheese and fries that'll make you cry.
The selection of beers is limited but they have Spotted Cow and that's all that really matters. Just do me a personal favor. Go to Oscar's, order a burger, and send me a message and tell me how great it was.
I've known of Oscar (the owner) since his days back at Sobelman's and his new joint is absolutely fantastic. Every one of their burgers is amazing and (in my opinion) yards better than Sobelman's: the Big "O" is hands down the best burger in Milwaukee. Their buffalo wings are also some of the best I've ever had, and they're really cheap on Thursdays. I can't say enough good things about this place and they even have a new deck out back for when it's warm. Good service. Good food. Accessible location.
Here's a rundown of their specials on the daily...
Mondays: $2 Pabst tall boys
Tuesdays: $2 Schlitz tall boys
Wednesdays: $2 Bud tall boys
Thursdays: $0.45 wings and $2 mystery beers
Fridays: delicious fish fry
Yes, Yes, Oh Yes! LOVE Oscar's for everything the experience entails. Small menu, focus on burgers, excellent beer and booze selection, great service, and the BIG FOOT burger...incredible. I'm quite ashamed it took me as long as it did to get here.
The burgers are solid -- 1/2 pounders that may require you to unhinge your jaw and consume like a snake. I dig the variety of flavors on the more adventurous offerings, and if you just want something simple Oscar doesn't judge -- have the basic burger/cheeseburger. The fries are tasty and dusted with something delicious -- love? The frickles are a solid appetizer, as are the battered cheddar nuggets. Paired with a Spotted Cow or any of the myriad craft brew (or domestic) selection, this is perfection. If the weather is nice, I urge you to sit out back.
All of this and I haven't even mentioned the price -- all but one burger (including fries) are less than $7 -- or the alcohol concoction known as the Knockout Punch (a must try). Sweet. And Oscar is such an incredible dude -- love when the owner is out chatting with patrons, delivering food, asking how things are...it's a nice touch.
Oscar's has quickly risen to the top of my list for best burgers in Milwaukee and will definitely be a "go to" for out of town guests wishing to get a ground meat on a bun fix. Every other place in Milwaukee that "does" burgers? You've been served with notice...Oscar's just might be the king of all in a short time.
UPDATE:
Now that I've done so, my suspicions have been confirmed.
Oscar's is a seriously great place to catch a Packer game.
And while I always go Big O sans bacon, this time, it was the Big Foot. (Crumbled blue cheese and boursin? YES PLEASE OH MY GAH.)
Awesome service, a community vibe, touchdown shots, high fives, burgers, nachos, wings, win.
Man! I found this place thanks to Yelp and it's users so first and foremost let me thank everyone who wrote a review before this one.
Since I was only in town for a short time, I made it a point to swing by here my 1st free moment to try the burgers.
I got the Big O burger and it came with guacamole on the side. I was quickly a fan of the menu, they had me at guacamole. When I saw that they had sweet potato fries I was fully prepared to give Oscar's a key to my apartment so we could live greasily ever after.
The burger had a great seasoning and the temperature I ordered (medium rare) made it more juicy and great. There was a point where I got a little overwhelmed. Between the dipping sauce, guacamole, cheesy jalapeno covered burger, and fries I didn't know whether I wanted to eat them together, or eat each thing individually and then throw the sauce back like a shot.
Needless to say I enjoyed it and stuck around to take pictures of my food and the place so that I could post them to my Instagram. Could have easily felt like the biggest of creepy douche bag for it - but nope the only thing I felt was full and sleepy. To this day I still show pictures of that burger to people like it was one of my children.
As far as atmosphere, the whole place seemed pretty open which was cool. There were plenty of outdoor seating, and music and TVs for indoor seating. With it being located in a neighborhood I thought it would be a great place to watch a game or sporting event. If I'm ever in town again, I'd go back... A LOT
I was in the neighborhood biking around today and decided to stop at Oscar's, which I'd heard was absolutely mind blowing. Well, I guess I better try it then.
Small building a block north of National off of 16th, it's definitely unassuming unless you know it's there. Which, I think, is perfect. Let everybody else mow down on (in my opinion) less-quality, albiet still good, burgers at AJ Bombers and Sobleman's.
Ok, anyway, Oscar's looks like a typical bar-grill when you walk in (duh, that's what it is, right?). Obligatory 6-7 flatscreens located around various parts of the bar (which, to my pleasure, normally will be broadcasting at least one or two soccer matches; normally LIGA MX). Jukebox, back dining room with games, darts, etc. The patio hear is also huge and offers a decent view of part of the menom valley below.
Burger's are the business here, and Santa Maria are they AMAZING. they're huge, first of all, juicy as eff, and a pretty good selection; including the house burger, The Big O. Â The Oscar Fries are a great compliment to the burger-gasm, too.
Beer selection is yummy; lots of local taps (lakefront, MKE Brewing, etc.). Imports, full bar, the usual shebang. Friendly staff, too. You can tell they care. Pretty busy for around 3pm for lunch, actually. Double Score. Â
Oscar complimented my bag as I walked out; that was awesome; gracias papa. I can tell when an owner cares about their business and this is definitely the case. I'll be returning VERY soon. hopefully for a lively mexican soccer game. ayooo.
