Having grown in an Italian family from Sicily I am use to excellent food. Â PJ's in El Sobrante will give you an updated version of Italian food with an exclusive San Francisco touch. Â We highly recommend this restaurant for its quality food, a pleasant setting. Â Sorry San Francisco fancy restaurants, you just have been left behind by PJs.

PJ's Restaurant & Cocktail, hmmmm what does PJ's stand for? Â Hmmmm... Â I'm gonna say the P stands for POTENTIAL.
All of my reviews begin with 5 stars and works its way down based on criterea, but here's my review.
First, if you're not from El Sobrante, you'll probably pass this place up thinking it's an old bar. Â Well, it is however, they have a kitchen and provide fine dining. Â I think that's what the sign out front says? Â You see, that's the problem. Â The sign is very small, and kinda hidden behind a huge tree. What you do notice from the outside is dark tinted windows and neon beer lights. Â The building has that old boulder stones type look. Â With all that being said, this place needs to open up! Â Trim that tree, put up better signage, and if possible get rid of those old boulders!
Once we walked in, the restaurant was very dark and empty. Â So we walked over to the bar area which was in our opinion a lot better considering the bar neon lighting, tv's, and jukebox. Â It really has that old 70's, or shall I say 50's feel. Â
We sat at a pub table in the bar area which is sectioned off from the restaurant by a wall and windows. Â There was nobody in the restaurant and I don't know why anyone would want to be in there. In my opinion, tear down that wall and open up the restaurant.
Ok, enough with the downer. Â The waiter took our order and he was great. Â The menu is mostly italian seafood, and I think the specials were written on an envelope? Â It don't matter, the selections were pretty good. Â
We started with the fried calamari. Â I didn't care for it, I like my batter crispy, this was a bit soggy. Â Oh I forgot, before aps, fresh bread was served and it was delicious!
For dinner, we had the catfish and pasta which was said to be the fresh fish of the day. Â They didn't lie, it was fresh and tastey! Â The pasta portion was small, I have no clue why? Â Pasta isn't expensive?
Bottomline, Â the P stands for POTENTIAL. Â I know that in this tough economic time investing is hard to do. Â But if at all possible, I highly encourage the owners to do so. Â PJ's has what it takes, they just need to make it happen.
PS, CASH ONLY!?! Â WTF????
A hidden gem in El Sobrante. Â Great Italian Food, great cook, fun bar. Â I have know Hector (a bartender) for 35 yrs. Â Almost disgusting but I graduated from High School with John Palmer(don't tell anyone)We recently used the restaurant for a memorial service and they were very cooperative. Stop by and say hi.
Review Source:PJ's is perhaps one of the most awesome bars in El Sobrante! Â So a bunch of my old high school friends (De Anza!!) decided to be brave and actually try bar hopping in El Sobrante one Friday night. Â My sister had gotten trashed the night before at a friend's house, vomiting in their sink and breaking a wine glass, so she volunteered to drive us to and from the 5 or so bars in El Sobrante.
Our first stop was Ed's, further down the Dam Road and away from anything. Â We hesitantly walk up to the door, having heard all the stories about the rednecks and De Anza teachers who frequented the place. Â We open the door and everyone immediately turns to stare at us. Â We walk up to the bar and the bartender (a nice lady) informs us that they already had last call. Â It wasn't even midnight! Â Anyways, we tried to keep our composure, but as soon as we left the room we were bursting out laughing and running to the car!
Second stop was Clancy's Cocktails, which my mom says has been around for 50+ years, I figured it had to be good. Â It wasn't bad, but it was pretty empty except for a couple in their 50s. Â The bartender was a woman who looked like she was retired, and she seemed suspiciously surprised to see any young people in there. Â She asked to see our id's and scrutinized each one for a long time before finally asking what we wanted. Â For a dive-y bar, this place was rather expensive. Â I ordered a whiskey sour and not only was it the smallest whiskey sour I've had, but it cost $10! Â We finished our drinks and crossed the street to what turned out to be the highlight of the night: PJ's.
Now PJ's is both a restaurant and a bar, but I have never seen anybody eating there. Â We go in and there are several people there, not too many, but not too few to make one feel uncomfortable. Â The bartender also looked like a retired man and he was surprised to see us, but he immediately started chatting us up. Â I forget his name, but apparently he was mayor of San Pablo twice, which is pretty cool, and the bar is popular with local cops. Â We'll be protected as we drink!
Anyways, I don't know if it was because we were a group of young girls or if he normally does this, but the 30 drinks we were served only ended up costing $30!!! Â How awesome is that?! Â And I didn't have to pay a dime, since my friend offered to pay (my boyfriend covered the drinks at Clancy's). Â I think it started off with us asking for fruity drinks and asking him what he drinks. Â He replied whiskey, and after he saw our repulsed faces, he insisted we have a shot. Â He took one with us and proceeded to serve us fruity drinks and whiskey shots. Â Super friendly guy, and we had a great time chatting with him.
We had a blast and got plastered near my house with my sister to come pick us up. Â Who could ask for a better night? Â We will definitely be going back there, what a blast!
