The plus about this place is that I think the owner is very sweet. The food....an entirely different story.
I had ox tails, mack n cheese, mashed potatoes, and peach cobbler. I really had high hopes for this meal. I was whole heartedly disappointed that this food was absolute rubbish! And I HATE saying that about anyones food.
For starters you can tell the the mashed potatoes are somewhat instant or simply very poorly made. They tasted of mainly salt and a weird texture in my mouth. The mac n cheese had lots of grease sitting on top of it, but more destructively it had no cheesy taste, just salt...again. The ox tails were actually pretty decent, no major complaints there except meat alone as the only good thing from the meal, to me, really is no meal at all.
The dessert was such a disaster. The peach cobbler was floating in grease. The crust was submerge in what looked to be super tasty juices, and somewhat delectable, but it was completely crunchy?!?! It was a crunchy, soggy mess. I could only eat the peaches!
I've thought about giving this place a second try, but I can't do it. Maybe if they read the reviews, switch-up the cook or tweak their recipes this place might have a fighting chance. The lack of quality food will choke the life out of this seemingly quaint restaurant.
Food is really good, and they work with you about what you really want. Â You come out satisfied. Â Once they gave us free (big) pieces of cake. Â Best soul food place I've found in the city in recent years... Haven't given it five stars yet because it just somehow doesn't come up to Jackie's Hot Pies what used to be on 71st... Holler if you remember...
Paul W.'s experience was interesting. Â I had a similar experience once at Treat on North and Kedzie. Â I imagine they shut early because they don't want to get robbed -- the neighborhood looks straight-up dangerous. Â I am no punk, I go everywhere, to every 'hood in the city. Â I judge each block by who's hanging out, and what type of activity's going on. Â When I come up in this piece, I park right in front.
Don't know what happened with the other two reviewers, but my roommate and I have been there a couple of times. Â They're friendly, the food is good, and they're not expensive. Â Sundays are particularly special, as they have a bigger menu on that day.
If you're too lazy to cook, stop by.
