5 stars for nostalgia alone.
America is running out of places like Pappy's. Its old, a little grimy, and amazing. It's the perfect towny bbq place without the attitude. If you are not a local or a regular, who cares?! The lady that runs the place is awesome. Tell her where you are from. Tell her a story. She genuinely likes the people that come into her restaurant.
The food actually is very good. Every time i go i get the daily special: Pulled pork with golden sauce and fries. It has never let me down once.
Eating at pappy's feels like going back in time. It's on an old street corner in a neighborhood from back in the day when Springfield had businesses on street corners in neighborhoods. Order a beer and strike up a conversation with the lady behind the bar. You will be glad you did.
The most authentic bbq place i have been to. When i travel for business, i try to go to THE place - and if you are looking for authentic, this is it. I ordered the daily special pork sandwich with golden sauce. The sandwich was excellent, though the meat was a little dry; the tasty golden sauce was a great remedy. I also had a hotlink on the side, and it was tasty, though a little bit spicy. The beer was cold, the food was good, and the atmosphere was great. Two of us had a great dinner, 2 beers each, and got out for $32, all at the oldest continually operating "beer by the drink" establishment in Missouri.
Review Source:Oh man for $7, you get about a pound of tasty pulled pork on a bun with pot. chips. Â The pork is tender and tasty, the home made bbq sauce is tasty. Â Chips are whatever, and ,the bun is stale. Â Its all about the pork, so I didnt care, plus they top it with some nice coleslaw. Â You can add a rib or smoked sausage for an additional $2.50 each, so of course I had to try both. Â The sausage was spicey and delish. Â The rib ( thank God I didn't get a full rack) sucked. Â I don't know if it was an off day or they were hitting the moonshine out back, but it tasted like burnt charcoal.
Service wise - just from looking at me and seeing I was from out of town, she could barely pretend to tolerate me. Â I asked what was the best to eat in the place and you think I wanted her social security #. Â I guess they only care to talk to their 2nd cousins and an occasional farm animal if the mood strikes. Â Hospitality my ass.
btw.....Amazingly cold beer on tap. Â Pretty great actually. Â made up for the lady behind the counter. Â I wanted to ask her if she was still mad at Dorothy for killing her sister.
Perfect ambiance for BBQ (casual with some interesting things to look at on the walls). The food is great. I would normally give this a 4-star, but since the McDonalds in Springfield has a 4-star, there is no way I'd give this place the same, so 5-star it is :)
If I'm back in Springfield someday, I'll return for the BBQ!
This is a great place for OLD school barbecue. When I say old school what I really mean is the school they tore to build the old school. This is Kansas City barbecue at it's purest. Very simple very small. It is a little tiny (about 5 tables including booths) hole in the wall where you can great food and cold beer. The bartender is very nice and coached us on the choices. We got the sampler with a bit of beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork and ham. Skip the ham. The ribs were really good flavor but a little tough. The brisket and pulled pork were awesome in every way. We will definitely be going back.
Review Source:This place is awesome! It's a teeny tiny place on an outer road that has lots of character. On the menu it says how the restaurant came to be and it's history. The place has a lot of old nik naks on the walls and wonderful service. My friend and I both got the pulled pork and it was more than enough food. It was a little dry for me but the sauce fixed that right up. I would recommend this place if you are a fan of the country-ish, small town service theme. Great BBQ!!
Review Source:Why is there  only 1 review of this place!  A definate hole in the wall, but the best BBQ around!  The meats are so nicely done and the sauces are great.  They are amazing!  The meats are moist, tender, just the right smokiness, so freakin good!  Very friendly staff..great time!
Review Source:Came to this place thinking that I'd end up enjoying one these great, all-American barbecue joints where the food is better than the Bandana's you're forced to hit up whenever that cue craving comes around. I thought wrong.
I wasn't all that impressed with the food. I thought the pulled pork was dry, and the sauce I added to it (which also was unimpressive) didn't seem to help much. Also, we sat outside in this little backyard-esque area that is off to the side of the restaurant, where there was a washer set (that's "warsher" for my fellow Missourians) and some patio sets, but the whole thing just felt kind of hodge-podged. There's a lot of potential for this outdoor space, but it didn't seem like anyone had maintained it in years.
The service at Pappy's Place isn't too bad, but the food and atmosphere left much to be desired. Might as well head back into town for some Bandana's.
This is a bar and grill, the sort of little hole-in-the-wall place where the "Coke" sign out front is larger than the sign that names the establishment. But it's been in business for a very long time and has a very friendly "down-home" atmosphere. One time when I went there, there was a lady selling farm-fresh eggs out of a cooler--that's how down-home it is!
On the plus side, their barbecue brisket sandwiches are excellent (even if they do use store-bought buns). Very moist and tender meat, tasty barbecue sauce.
On the minus side, they are a smoking-only establishment, so anyone with breathing problems may just want to call in their order and get it to-go.
