Visited Pax for the first time a couple of weeks ago to see Mr Pauer...a very good DJ who was playing during WMC.
This place is so cool...super hipster vibe, laidback, cheap drinks, open space with great dancefloor.
They have live bands performing almost every weekend. Def a great spot to hang out, no frills, no need for high heels here. Just good times.
I came here to see a friend play on a Saturday night for their big launch party and was surprised to even find this place. Â I must confess, I passed it once, wondering where the GPS was taking me. Â It is nestled between a soccer field, next to a strip mall, and under the overpass. Â The parking was valet, although I don't know if there's any other options. Â Since it was almost midnight, I parked in the strip mall, considering most of these places were already closed anyway, so I didn't think I'd get towed (and I didn't, but park at your own risk).
The place is small, dark, and made out of wood. Â It kind of looks like a pop-up place. Â The band members were joking that it was made out of wood from Hurricane Katrina. Â As others mentioned, the admission is $10 but I was on the guest list, so I didn't have to pay. Â
They have outdoor seating in the front, with patio chairs, and inside there are tables and couches, and a bar. Â There's a stage and some floor space for dancing. Â The crowds were not too big, which was nice, and everyone seemed to have a good time.
There were plenty of people dancing and talking, although some complained that the live music was way too loud, but it seemed to be the sound system being too loud. Â It's not really my scene or type of music (Nostalgia-style Cuban music), but I came to support my friends and their band. Â Just because a style of music doesn't particularly appeal to me doesn't mean I can't tell whether a band is good, and I thought they were good and judging by all the dancing, cheering, and clapping, so did several people. Â The singer and all the instrument players were in tune. Â The crowds tend to be mid-40s and up, and some of them seemed to be professional salsa dancers judging by their suave, flawless moves. Â
It's a good place for an intimate gathering of friends and live bands, I wouldn't mind coming again, the weather was nice and the staff was friendly. I hear a lot of Latin bands launch their music here so if that's your type of music, you may want to check their site for upcoming bands that will be playing.
PAX is a great live band hang out for the more mature crowd, different nights different bands different styles of music. Center dance floor is perfectly situated. The inside and outside seating areas with huge opening between the two allow you to enjoy the band from the outside. The 10 cover may seem little steep for this simple place in an unusual location but the live music and reasonable priced drinks make up for it all. We had a great time here.
Review Source:I went here on a date, and it was the perfect venue. A Venezuelan band was playing that night, so per the website there was supposed to be a $10 cover, but we just walked in and no one asked for it! Inside there was a bar in the back with a decent sized stage upfront. The couches were great for chatting and enjoying the scene, and the dance floor was spacious. I really liked the chill scene and would definitely come here again.
Review Source:great vibe and depending on who's playing - one of the best venues around. Â really like their laid-back approach and a good mix of seating and standing/mingling area. Â could do more with the out front area and if you have to park in the grass, take flipflops to get through the muck.
Review Source:I came here on a Saturday to see Elastic Bond play. Â The venue is funky. Â Hanging out in the front and seeing the underpass of I-95 has a shady/ cool vibe to it. Â Only crazy, illegal things happen under bridges which makes it all the more appealing. Lol. Â It was dimly lit inside with tables to sit at that face a large stage.
As strange as it sounds, I was impressed by the bathroom decor complete with mag cutouts of supermodels' eyes and a cutsy vintage armoire. Â One of the patrons was gladly taking photos while lounging on top of it. Lol.
The crowd was laid back, artsy. Â I would say Latin hipster, if that's a term. Â It was definitely intimate and the acoustics were great.
IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN BEFORE, THEN GO. Â AND IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE, GO SEE ELASTIC BOND. Â They rock!
Dark, artsy lounges located beneath sketchy, creepy underpasses, are not my usual MO. Â However, under the premises of a networking event my better half finally convinced me to attend the Palo! Film, Food & Funk event. Â
Surprisingly I really enjoyed myself. Â For starters an open bar! Sure it wasn't top shelf but the bartender was nice enough to whip me up a mock Mojito! Â A bartender that's eager to please...that's refreshing!!! Total brownie points!
Even better than the drinks were the independent short films featured. Â I normally cringe when presented with the prospect of independent films (AahHHhh!!!!!) Â But these films were funny and I secretly wish we would have arrived earlier so I could have seen more (we got there an hour late).
Venue wise: let's just say PAX has personality. Ok it has multiple personalities, mixed matched furniture, thrift store décor but all in funnest way possible. Â
Totally worth a visit if you're looking to do something new to do.
What a surreal location. The building where PAX sits was either a gas station, a Farm Store, a Krispy Kreme shop, or a drive-thru grocery store. I really would like to know which. PAX is also enclosed by a tall fence, giving you a role in a scene where prison inmates are playing an intense game of basketball. Luckily, instead of being guarded by wardens you are free to go indoors and enjoy music and drinks. Inside, the place is decorated with Asian artifacts, India and Thailand are two countries that come to mind. The vibe is a little bit hippie mixed with hard rock and eclectic or modern. There are tables, booths, sofas, and a small stage, all hinting to a more intimate environment.
A strange thing I noticed is that the front facade, what you see before you enter, are curtain panels. I wouldn't have realized it if the staff didn't open them when the show was over. All I can say is that I am glad I didn't lean on those walls, if not I would have come crashing on the tables inside, kinda like Paul Mart on Mall Cop. So, PAX is pretty cool. Its offbeat ambiance showcases local bands, indie bands, international South American bands and acts, and basically anyone who has something to share and can't afford the big arena or theater. The crowds are pleasant and friendly, and the staff is top notch. I recommend it to experience something different.
I am lucky enough that a very good friend of mine is in the music " biz " and I get to be a plus 1 at showcases for up and coming artists. Â
The venues are usually smaller places barely bigger than your neighborhood bar and sometimes as big as THE STAGE.
PAX fits right in the middle of these places because it had has the bar feel but you can tell it was built for highlighting performing artists by the stage, lighting and the Cotton Club style seating around the front of the stage.
That brings me to my tips.
1. Arrived early - this place is almost hidden under the 95 underpass going down 8th street. I guarantee you have driven past this many times and not noticed it.
2. Wear comfortable shoes because the " parking lot " is like a construction set and your " cute " shoes will be ruined in the rock and boulder filled gravel pit I expected to see Fred Flintstone yell " Yabba Dabba Doo " any moment jump of his dinosaur and pedal his car home any moment.
3. Get a seat early near the front or prepare to stand all night - seating is limited so if you are arriving late - hang at the bar in the back in your - ( see tip # 2 ) comfortable shoes.
Bar service is usually good but like most places waving your dollar aka cash will get you faster service. Plus they have cheap beer too in case you are fronting as music talent scout but on a budget.
This place is pretty fun for my first visit. The Band "Elastic Bond" ROCKED the house so well, I bought them all a shot. Boom.
The Place is pretty hip, comfy with table next to the dance floor, feels like an outside bar, has an outside area, the MOJITOS are to DIE for. Freshly made and worth drinking more than 1. Huge too!
Big Plus, first time in PAX, get 50% off your drinks. AWESOME!!!
ALL bartenders are really cool LOBET!!!
If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy great drinks, dance, free parking(a major plus in Miami) and see the best musicians Miami has to offer then Pax is where you want to go. The vibe here is awesome. It's not like the rest of the Miami scene.
I was here on a Saturday March 10th. Locos Por Juana was performing http://www.locosporjuana…. Truly Miami's most talented band. Its rare to see a band that makes every single person in the place dance and they had everybody moving. The crowd was extremely diverse, which is great to see. Locos Por Juana's energy was infectious and you couldn't help but move your hips. I have been to many venues in Miami and have seen a lot of bands perform and i have never seen any band get a reaction from the crowd like these guys did. They leave you craving more. Seeing these guys live is truly an experience.
Great Music, Cheap drinks, friendly staff and an awesome atmosphere..... PAX, you will see more of me.
This place is so much fun, and so different from what we are use to in Miami. Â I went for my birthday two weekends ago, I wanted something fun and different to do. I saw Suenalo perform that night they were phenominal! Â My friends all met me there, and there was no mission to get in, the parking was free always a plus. Â PAX truly showcases the artist, it has a great vibe, live music, dancing, and affordable drinks what else can you ask for to have a kick ass night!
Review Source:If you are thinking of hitting this spot do not forget to wear your dancing shoes - what a Little fun gem this is! This is exactly the kind of place I was hoping to find here in Miami, and to satisfy my dancing craving, PAX was discovered.
What else can a dancing fanatic ask for:
*No cover but a donation of $5/10 is suggested specially if a band is playing
*Free Parking
*Affordable drinks - I paid 5$ for a good quality glass of white wine
*Awesome MUSIC - when I say awesome I'm referring to old school good music - salsa, merengue, bachata, even hip hop and Latin jazz
If the above music selection is not enough they also have guest bands performing almost every weekend - local, vibrating, energizing up coming bands- This past Saturday "Suenalo" was the guest band and let me tell you: THEY KILLED IT! so much soul, so much rhythm, the band was literally bringing down the house. Everybody was dancing to their energetic tunes, bongos & drums had all the girls booty shaking, while the hip fusion of Sax and Trombone had the rest of attendees just shaking of excitement
Definitely a must go! this Saturday Spam All Stars will be playing needless to say I am counting down the days - so much fun!
We celebrated my friend's birthday at PAX - Performing Arts eXchange last night. There's free parking on the adjacent lot with a gentleman watching the cars. Â Tips for him are suggested, but it is up to each individual. Â We were a large group of about 20 people. Â They immediately made us feel welcomed, gathered tables, and the service was great. Â The waitress was very nice and got the orders correct with a very positive attitude. Â There's a full bar where people may select hard liquor, mixed drinks, wine, or beer. There were people inside where it is air-conditioned and there were other people outside enjoying the moonlight. There was a life band and great music when they went on break, too. Â I hope to go back with friends again.
Review Source:PAX is the new spot to listen to live music. The sound quality from the stage is very clear and their is plenty of space on the dance floor. Drinks are priced pretty normal for Brickell. They have a free parking lot next door which is extremely convenient. Also they have check in offers on yelp for a half priced first drink. Definitely worth checking out.
Review Source:what a relief, a cool music scene with no cover or velvet rope attitude. Â great line-up of bands for the months to come... simple decor, no hype, lots of space, without feeling empty. an added plus: Â very little cigarette smoke, my friends & i couldn't believe it, danced for hours, went to sleep smiling and happy.... Â thanks PAX
Review Source:oh dang...booty shaking from left to right! Â I had a freaking great time chilling at this laid back, inexpensive treasure of a hang out. Â
The ambiance reminded me of the best of New York City parties - people came out to dance - and didn't give a flying frisbee if they sweat. Â Ok...there were a few Profilers but they were swiftly moved to the side so the party could be on. Â It helped that the band Suenalo (I understand they were here in April) was the featured band. They ROCK! check out some of their music at: Â
http://www.facebook.com/…
The place is clean and has enough space to dance and sit - they have an outside chilling space for the smokers, no cover and free parking (please tip the guy...he is watching your things to make sure no unfriendlies bust up your windows). Â Location is right off the I95 and next to Mickey-D's (perfect for the midnight munchies). Â The mixed drink specials run you about $5.00 and beer $6.00 - but remember to check in with a Yelper and Facebooker - for your discounted/free first drink. Â
Talk about Yelpers - this was an impromptu and unofficial Yelp shin dig - I say that because the party started only when we showed up! Yeah Natasha, Lena, Yahira and Rob! Â We let our presence be known by shaking what our momma gave us (talking to you sexy Rob D) LOL.... and even tagged our names on the bar (yeah..they let us...they gave us chalk) LOL .
Looking forward to burning some more calories at the next concert -- I think PALO is doing their thing next week. Â http://gopalo.com/
I love it!!! Â Big and comfy and hassle free just like it needs to be. Â DON'T change anything about it.. Easy parking, no cover, super roomy, nice bartenders, clean bathrooms, affordable drinks and great music. Â As long as they continue to support local music and give all our great bands a chance to play it's 5 stars for me..
Review Source:FINALLY! I have been waiting for a place like this for the past decade. A place where I can go "Just for Coffee" and great company. PAX offers great best of all worlds...The ambiance of the place is so inviting, that you never want to leave, the Decor was carefully selected and ever changing so every time you walk into PAX, you are in for a treat. New things are always on display on their walls and shelves...so look around!
The Best part is on the weekend, PAX transforms itself into a fantastic venue where the best Miami band share the stage with audiences that support and appreciate live (local) music. The bar is completely stock with a large variety of Beer, Wine and Spirits for affordable prices!
There is plenty of space for everyone to dance to Locos por Juana, Suenalo, Cojunto el Progreso and to headbang to alternative bands like Minimal or Arboles Libres.
The music selection is great only the best bands make it to PAX, a black box under the overpass where i95 meets Calle 8....is like a Pandora Box always full of surprises, great music, friends and a great vibe!
Great place to listen to music and have a drink!!!
PAX is already making a name for themselves for bringing in great live bands to a place with outstanding acoustics. They're conveniently located in Brickell (seconds from I-95) and have their own private parking lot! The place is beautifully decorated and the drinks are very affordable.
This is the place to see Miami's local artists.
the music scene of miami... thats what pax is all about. i was here recently for an event/panel discussion called 'the business of world music' followed by performances from zona de bomba and barrio abajo. both excellent music projects founded in miami. zona de bomba is puerto rican bomba. barrio abajo is afro-colombian folk. that right there automatically makes this place special. the wonderful people who own and run pax are genuine music lovers. a solid part of our music scene in a city thats been germinating the most eclectic and raw talent in the country.
the space itself is very nice. feels kinda loungy without losing its music venue vibe. the sound is clear and the bar is stocked with the usual spirits and some great beer choices like chimay and guinness. service was very nice and effective so there is no doubt in my mind that i will be back again before i go back to dallas. fo sho.
As a die-hard supporter of the local live music scene (read: addict), I was very excited to hear about this brand new venue in the Brickell / Downtown Miami area. They had a soft opening recently (April 2011) with the band SUENALO! and of course I could not resist being there for that!
The place is a fixed up warehouse with plenty of AC and breathing room. Â Nice weighty bar and friendly faces gives it a feel of a neighborhood bar. Â But this place is far from a dive.
Music and performing arts are the main attraction here, not an afterthought like a majority of South Florida clubs. Â The owners took their time to create a visually and auditorily (is that a word?) appealing space. Â The stage is front and center with a well-placed, out-of-the way sound loft. Â The sound is excellent... And velvety, ceiling to floor fabric draperies help to improve the acoustics even further. Â
I was very happy to return on a Monday night for their open mic "PAXJam" night which already attracts some of the best musicians in town. Yay! Â If you like Jazz, this is not to be missed!
I am happy to say PAX is already "doing it right" and local music fans will not be disappointed with this new place to hang out and get their live music fix (OK - I'm talking about me again!) Â
Oh, and the collage which graces the bathroom walls is fun, too!
