this was the exclamation heard from the bar fifteen minutes after sitting down. minutes later a man walks in through the back door

bar wench: GET OUT!
man: i never disrespected you
bar wench: GET THE FUCK OUT AND TALK TO CHUCK IF YOU WANT TO GET BACK IN
man: ok

he got back up and walked out through the back door. hipsters and manayunk suburban transplants beware. this place aint for you. this is a real bar. a dad bar. and i will be back.

This is a weird review for me to write. First of all, even though it's 2 stars, I actually believe that it's a good 2-star review, not a bad one. Secondly, many people may disagree with it, but I can only present it the way I see it and rely on the other reviews to balance me out if I am wrong. Peck Miller's is like three bars (at least) in one space--  which one you are going to depends on perspective and time of day. If you are a neighborhood local, under 40 and you go there, odds are you *either* use some hardcore drugs or you're in the trades and unxpectedly not working that day. If you are not a local and are under 40, you go there because it's a cool bar with nice people, a random jukebox and cheap beers, but you are probably only there after work/ at night. If you are *over* 40, it's just a neighborhood bar where no one really bothers each other and you can have a good time.

The bar is much larger on the inside than it appears from the outside. I will not mark it as "good for dancing," but there have been plenty of nights where people moved all the tables and got down. The daytime crowd is mostly day laborers and tradesman who are either temporarily laid off or not working that day due to the weather. This means that if you want to drink at 7 am, you'll have company. This also means that most of them are not too interested in loud foolishness. The crowds after work and at night are also different. They have a great softball team and a competitive dart league that usually provides some great entertainment in more ways than you'd think (this year's champions actually got in a fight with each other after they won. and i mean a break the tables fight amongst same-team members). There are many nights where I walk by and hear the music blasting and lots of laughter and would like to stop in...

BUT, as a not-many-years-after-born and raised neighborhood local I fear the judgment of those who who would recognize me leaving and rarely go in. I have several older friends who hang out there and they love it, and occasionally I am forced inside. It's not like I am famous or popular, but Roxborough/Manayunk is tiny and incestuous  and it really is about the gossip that would fire up if the wrong people saw me leaving. I have to admit that I actually like Peck's and I've always had fun when dragged there. In this one respect, I actually do envy all the newcomers to the neighborhood (which is really anyone who didn't grow up and go to school here) who can venture in and enjoy their time with impunity ;)
