I can't seem to get a good experience at this place.  The food is mediocre at best.  My most recent trip summed up the few experiences I've had here nicely.

I sat down with two friends.  The waitresses, while not rude, are only ever particularly interested in the gentlemen in the party.  Despite the place being pretty empty, it took a long time to get drinks and, unsurprisingly, even longer to get our food.

I ordered a blue cheeseburger with fries - pretty basic.  The burger was poorly seasoned, though cooked to a perfect medium as requested.  One of my major pet peeves when it comes to burgers is unevenly distributed toppings - I want to taste everything in each bite.  The blue cheese was mostly on one side, as was the bacon   Meanwhile, the bun was fresh, but brioche buns need to go the way of the dinosaur.  It's too much bread to burger ratio.

The fries were disappointingly soggy - not just a little, but so soggy they were inedible.  Nobody ever asked if I'd like a refill on my coke, nor did my water glass ever get a refill.

I won't be back to Poe's.  I recommend your spend your money elsewhere too.

Love the atmosphere in this no frills neighborhood joint. The food is just plain good, and the environment is comfortable and unpretentious. This is the place where regulars hang at the bar, groups hang on the patio, and you can seat yourself inside.

On our first dinner visit we tried the fried oysters daily special and they were perfectly crunchy and juicy, and served with a delicious ranch-style sauce. The boy had the meatloaf which he devoured and said was amazing. I had the pulled pork barbecue sandwich, and I thought it was delicious. It was served NC-style, so not too much sauce, and with some really good cole slaw.

Our waitress was very kowledgeable about the food, and she made some really good suggestions, so we appreciated that. We'll definitely be back, and maybe next time we'll walk :)

Poe's has great beer, good food, and is full of characters. I love this bar.

I called in an order for a Reuben at 1:05pm and was told 10 min. I arrived shortly after and it wasn't ready. I finally got the sandwich at 2:00. If I wasn't with people I would've left. Avoid this place.

I posted the first review of Poes' several years ago after an insulting experience.  I revisited a couple of weeks ago and found that while it looks virtually the same, the service was excellent.  The floor server and bartenders are more mature, friendly, and I was soundly welcomed when I bellied up.  There is even a digital sign reading "We love you!"  (OK - maybe a bit much!) but clearly a different, more welcoming vibe than what I experienced before.  Good job Poe's for being strong enough to change your 'tude.  Keep it up!  A pub in the truest sense - bar food, cold drinks, friendly patrons.

I'd consider it a biker bar if it were more interesting.

My dad and I stopped here on a roadtrip after finding it on a website for dog friendly places to eat. They were so nice to my pup and brought him out water and gave him plenty of ear scratches. Immediately we were impressed, it is very quaint, has a sign in front that says "sorry we're open" which we appreciated.
Now a food review, SO GOOD! I got the turkey sandwich with avocado aioli on foccacia bread and it was all so fresh, the turkey definitely wasn't cold cut style, but thanksgiving style. The bread was so fresh, soft, and delicious I want to eat it everyday. After we ate, the waitress convinced us to get dessert by just saying it was all made in the back, even the whipped cream. We got the strawberry shortcake and it was one of the top 5 strawberry shortcakes either of us have ever had, so good! I have already told multiple friends that stop by this area often that they need to go here. Would definitely go again if ever in the area.

    Dig it.

First timer to Poe's. I was introduced to the place by a co-worker who spent the better part of his 'younger-days' howling at the moon via Poe's. I appreciated the ambiance of the bar and the low-key atmosphere. We were there for lunch, I had the bacon and Maytag Blue Cheese burger, medium. It was good, a solid 3.5 stars. The waitress said they were "known for their bbq and burgers"; we'll see how the bbq goes the next go-'round.

    Prices are reasonable.

The French Onion soup special looked really good as well but I'll have to give it a shot the next time I pass through Richmond.

I'd come back here....it's a 3.5 star place. Could be 4.0 if the fries were better...

Should be said this is a little "rough". Its an older building, and it shows...but has a unique charm that can be appreciated.

Great Reuben Sandwich. Not a fan of their fries though. Trade up for the onion Rings. Big thick cuts of Corned Beef.

We sat at the bar, and the girl who served us, Sarah, was really knowledgeable and friendly.

A good place to go for lunch.

fun place with good drinks and people. my bf loves the biker brunch and has been all excited to take me while i'm in town this month. but for some reason, they see it as ok to keep it on the 2nd sunday even when that day is Easter. Even if I wasn't going to be out of town to see my family, I still would be upset by this because I would then be spending it with my future in-laws and having family time. They should respect the holiday and move it to the following weekend. if that were the case, it'd be 4 stars.

Boyfriend and I came here after visiting a friend in town. It looked pretty empty, but we were hungry. After scanning the Yelp reviews, we decided it would be fine. We expected something mediocre. Well, we were WRONG! The food and service were excellent! In fact, I think the next time I am down in Richmond, I'll come by here again.

We like Poe's a lot. Good food, decent prices.  The restaurant is kid friendly and waitstaff are great with kids!  One of my favorite bars in Richmond to sit at without the kids!

By far one of the best hidden secrets of Richmond. While it has an amazing atmosphere, it is the food that truly brings everyone in. I would easily say the best burger in Richmond and is confirmed by some of my best friends and family.

during the day into the early evening it's great for children. Once it becomes night it truly is a great watering hole for the older crowd with a friendly staff and great selection at the bar.

I make it a point to stop into Poes at least once a week. They have a great beer selection and an incredible menu. The food always comes out exactly as I order it, and always hits the spot. Also, the portions are huge for the price! The staff are always friendly and very inviting. If you haven't checked this place out yet, do yourself a favor and give it a shot!

Brunch was great!  They really load up their mimosas, too.  Leaving Richmond for greener pastures, I'm a little disappointed that I didn't discover this place sooner.

Great little bar! The staff is as good as it gets in RVA. Burgers are great
( they have a new hi-fer-lootting chef) who does most of the cooking and leaves it for the regular cooks at night) Sunday brunch is cool. Drinks are strong and the bartenders make you feel at home

If you've ever driven by Poe's on Sunday morning, you've likely seen the tremendous gathering of motorcyclists out front... turns out, that's because Poe's has a Bikers Brunch Buffet on Sunday mornings... so all the local motorcycle enthusiasts go out, get some cheap greasy diner-quality grub, and size up each other's rides.  If you are adverse to testosterone, don't attend.

I went out this past Sunday to meet up with some friends, and was dismayed to find that Poe's wasn't serving the buffet anymore!  They thought it was getting too cold to ride- they clearly do not know Richmond bikers very well!  AND, the buffet used to start at 9am, but yesterday Poe's kitchen wasn't ready until 10am.

Once we finally got served (after being there for an hour), the food itself was fine.  Greasy, quickly prepared, and nothing I'd go out of my way to eat again, but it was completely sufficient, and reasonably priced.  For $9 my husband got a giant plate filled with eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, and biscuits.  For $10 I got a plate with soft scrambled eggs, mushrooms, peppers, and shrimp, on top of puff pastry and drenched with hollandaise.  I asked for the hollandaise on the side, but the kitchen didn't accommodate, so unfortunately I only ate about half my meal.  Probably better that way...

And since we had to wait so long for the kitchen to open, we got free coffee.  Wish it was better coffee, but at least it was something.

If you like diners, you'll probably love Poe's.  It's clearly a seedy bar at night, but they do a decent brunch from what I tasted, and they don't pretend to be something they're not- their menu is simple and filled with the basics- good hangover food.

I'm also sorry they are open.

I had never eaten here until last night because I've never heard anyone say "man you really have to try Poe's Pub... it's amazing." Last night I had some family in town that called and said that's where they were and wanted me to grab a bite with them so of course I went.

The waitress (while cute and meaning no harm) told us to hurry up, rushed us, and made it very clear her priority was watching the LSU game on TV. College pride is one thing, but having a job these days is worth more than the two degrees she said she had.  Again, she was very friendly, but not a good waitress.

The food took a VERY long time considering we only got sandwiches and fries. Then when it came (without the pickles or BBQ sauce we requested) I figured out why it took so long. My grilled chicken breast was so burnt most of it was inedible. I mean seriously people... how do you screw up a piece of grilled chicken breast? Nearly impossible.

Then to make all worse, she finally brought the pickles but one had a hair. Once again our nice but not very good waitress came to the rescue with new ones, but at that point it's really a matter of trust that we have none of.

So in summary, the food is awful, the service needs to prioritize, and the building itself is falling apart and dirty.
