The idea of a gourmet food cart is kinda like the idea of Lindsay Lohan: temptingly delicious, but kinda scary, at the same time.
The good news is that The Porker is like Lindsay, but a Lindsay who's successfully completed rehab. The Porker is hotttt.
Tried to go to Biker Jim's eastern 17th St. annex today (at the 17th/CA plaza) and he was nowhere to be seen. There was, however, The Porker Cart and a friendly chef turnin' out great looking plates.
Had the Sweet Soy Slow Baked Pork Belly served over soba noodles, with red peppers and mango (!), and it was truly delicious. I think it was $7 or $8, and totally worth it. My bud-ette had what she said was a fantastic pork tamale that looked incredible (incredible, as in the masa flour used for the tamale was flavored with bacon:-))).
Give this cart a try. You're gonna squeal with delight.
It's about time someone stops jerking around with all of these other meats and creates a food business solely dedicated to swine. Â The Porker is all about the pig. Â Daily offerings include bbq ribs and achiote pork tamales with bacon masa. Â Bacon masa? Â Apparently they put bacon chunks and bacon grease into the masa, holy heart attack! Â I skipped those items and went with the pork belly on a bed of cold mango soba noodle salad. Â My first impression of The Porker is that it is simply okay. Â The soy sauce flavoring of the pork belly was nice, but I found that it was disappointingly dry. Â The slab of belly did flake off quite nicely and the fat content was somewhat low, which I think is always nice (even though the fat is so, so necessary). Â The cold noodle salad was nice given the summer heat. Â They also have daily specials and vegetarian offerings. Â I think this food stand has a ton of potential and I'll be back to try the rest of the menu.
