This place is an absolute gem and is run by a couple of really nice patrons. Â The first time we went to visit we perused the impressive variety of specialty items that you can't find on the rest of Chincoteague Island. Â Poseidon's Pantry is a very quaint, but well-kept store that packs in a great variety of items. Â We gawked at the Castelvetrano olives (a personal favorite), unique cheeses, snacks, hot sauces (a great selection) and beers. Â We don't drink, but we were fascinated by the beer selection, which was still quite impressive and worthy of a review by themselves. Â We didn't buy anything the first time, but took a lunch menu with us and began drooling over the gourmet, reasonably priced sandwich selections. Â
Here's a helpful hint--get a sandwich here and talk to the patrons--they are very friendly and they care what you think of their store. Â I made a point to say how much I loved the store on our first visit, and they remembered us when we came back the next day...but then something amazing happened that we are completely unaccustomed to in the DC area. Â When we came in, they said hello and asked us to give our opinion on a hummus the chef/patron had concocted. Â He was genuinely interested in our opinion and told us what he made, how he made it, etc. Â It was delicious hummus, but the perceived concern over our delicate palates was quite an experience--and we felt very welcome as a result. Â Oh, and the pimento cheese they make is the BEST I have ever tasted--but don't tell my mother I said that. Â They make it with jack cheese and it has a subtle, albeit memorable kick to the mouth. Â We were in love, picked up some olives, crackers, and got a club sandwich that is special because they use special aged/smoked bacon from a local outfit off the island. Â It was delicious. Â
If you are in Chincoteague Island for a vacation or just passing through, please stop here and talk to the patrons...the conversation is as appealing as the items they sell, and then some. Â It's a wonderful place to just wander or pick up those items you love to take to the beach for a picnic. Â This deserves an excellent rating, but I'd gladly give it higher praise if possible.
what a special place! a real fresh find among all of the outdated places to eat on the island. not sure what we would have eaten if it wasn't for this place --- great sandwiches (artfully prepared with fresh ingredients), yummy creative beach snacks and refreshing drinks. wonderful staff. you can't really ask for much more!
