The food is decent but the service is sub par. We have been here 4 times and every time something has been unsatisfactory.
We were seated here on a slow Sunday night and waited 10-15 minutes while our waitress walked past several times with no acknowledgement. We left and are at citizen burger. Much better already.
We arrived late on a snowy Sunday night in March, to grab drinks before heading off to dinner elsewhere. Â We ordered a scotch and a Sidecar. The bartender was a friendly, welcoming man who was very helpful and polite. Â He gave us some interesting information about the scotch and could talk intelligently about the various drinks he served. And then he made the most delicious Sidecar I have ever tasted! Â It was spectacular, so I had two! I'd love to go back and try the food!
Review Source:Great food, friendly service, good vibes. Â I really like their beer selection. Â The hostess was super friendly and was willing to take our phone number when there wasn't much room for us to wait in the bar/restaurant. Â My mom got the crabcake sandwich, dad got the lamb burger, and i got the 4th street burger - all of us were very happy with our choices. Â And the beeramisu dessert was fantastic!
They only take reservations for groups of six or more.
3/3.5
Given the reviews on Yelp, I was disappointed with my experience. The ambience is nice, but the service and food does not live up to its reviews and atmosphere.
The service was terrible. I undersand that it was a busy friday night, but when we got there we were barely noticed by the staff at the restaurant. We were put into this corner, and it took our waiter a good 15-20 min to take our drink and another 15 minute to take our order. Overall, we spent roughly 1/1.5 hour waiting, which is too long for my liking.
I ordered the 4th st burger with a side of fries, which was not anything special. The fries was overwhelmed with salt, and the burger was pretty good, but not anything you can't find elsewhere.
Therefore, if you are in a rush, and want a burger, I suggest you go to the five guys next door. This place is better suited for mingling over happy hour.
A swanky yet comfortable American restaurant on the downtown mall that provides a wide range of gourmet burgers including the 4th St with onion straws, house pickles, and bacon-onion marmalade to the Mediterranean Veggie with tzatziki sauce, avocado, and goat cheese. Their appetizer and late night menus also feature fried artichoke hearts with a spinach pesto sauce. Delectable!
Review Source:Great meal, good drinks.
We had a bit of a wait for a table but the bar kept us happy for about an hour. We ordered the poutine to start and while it was okay, it could have been much better, the gravy lacked a bit of depth. Good cheese curds though.
We had three of their house burgers and one veggie option. Everything was delicious. Burgers done to perfection. Crispy fries. And the cauliflower mash? I wanted to roll around in it so I could be that delicious.
*3.5
To be hones, I was a bit disappointed, especially since I had been waiting for 6 months to finally come here (I tried coming on my 21st birthday, but for some reason it was closed) & my friends who have been here before had hyped it up so much.
Atmosphere and service definitely gets high marks, though the food does not. Plus, the wait is always ridiculous because it's such a small space.
We ordered poutine while we waited, but I was also disappointed by the authenticity of them--maybe because I've had better in Montreal?
Now onto the main course: Although my skirt steak was delicious, I felt like the burgers were like every other burger. If I could have just ordered a bunch of sides, I totally would have. The cauliflower mash was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Please don't tell me how much butter and heavy cream went into making it!
If I were to come back again next time, I think I would come for drinks to chill, order a bunch of sides to share and then hop over to somewhere else on the downtown mall for some real entrees.
Lo, let's all sit down as I recount the great and terrible story* of the Quebec delicacy, that combination of curds and beef gravy and fried potato, the erstwhile Poutine. This one dashing fellow, Fernand Lachance, fell sick on a December morning - some said it was that brisk Canadian breeze that wore out so many Yankee hearts, others muttered it was gonorrhea from the local tavern that Lachance frequented. So his helpful butler rummaged through the ancient equivalent of a fridge (an ice box? a skunk's bladder buried in the dirt?) and came up with the following items to cook a nourishing meal: a mutilated potato and old cow. "Hark," the butler bellowed, "meat and cheese from the cow and potato from the potato!" So the butler toiled and sweated above a roaring fire, and finally produced a thing of wondrous beauty - fried potatoes covered in bits of curd, served with five dollops of gravy. Needless to say, Lachance yakked all over himself at the mere sight of the dish, promptly felt better, and devoured his butler's creation. Right before the yakking commenced, the butler could have sworn Lachance gasp out, "It looks freaking terrible," but one never knows the exact language.
4th Street has poutine and it is absolutely delicious. The fries got all soggy from the cheese and gravy, which only means that we didn't annihilate it fast enough. I ordered the 4th street burger with those things called onion straws and bacon-onion marmalade. The patty itself was on the small side and oddly under-seasoned, but I guess that's what the bacon-onion stuff is for. Points for cooking it medium-rare as I asked. Their fall menu does not have the berry crisp that their spring menu does, so tsk tsk, 4th Street, for getting my hopes up. Food came out very promptly, even though the place was packed, so much, much appreciated.
*Yes, I made the whole story up. Yes, you'll never look at poutine the same way.
The bar staff has been amazing... I have gatherings there with 5-20 people monthly and they always accommodate with ease! The entrees are great- great burgers and the mushroom ravioli is SO good- not something I usually would have thought to order there.. Â Good drink specials during happy hour. Â The only thing keeping this from a 5 star raring is the relatively limited appetizer menu- if they beefed that up a bit they'd be a solid 5!
Review Source:I came here looking for dinner during a work trip and stayed for two brews. Although the patio was tempting, nobody was out there, so I decided to eat inside. I got the veggie burger 4th Street style, with fried onions and a bacon-onion sweet sauce and cheddar. Off the hook. Really delicious. And, a good "smaller portion" burger (i.e. not an oversized monstrosity like the ones served typically at American restaurants). The cauliflower mash was the showstopper though. Bartender was very friendly. Would return!
Review Source:Adequate upscale burger joint. Â Friendly staff, no problem with the service. Â Short beer list but adequate and reasonably priced. Â Awesome french fries.
If this place was open for lunch, I would eat here frequently.
It would be difficult to be a pretentious foodie/winie at 4th Street. Â If that is important to you, look elsewhere.
I swung into Positively 4th Street for a Tuesday beer/dinner and it was... okay!
I'll hit the review part quickly... and then the fun part thereafter...
The beer selection isn't really all that fantastic... but at least it was priced well (I had a Rogue Dead Guy Ale on draught for 6 bucks!).
The service was friendly and efficient.
The food was just so-so. Â On the recommendation of the server, I got a burger. Â It was a fairly small patty, overcooked (but still tasty enough), and came with grilled asparagus that was drowned in so much salt, I almost went blind looking at it.
Where they get bumped up a star is for their great patio location that allowed for some really fun people watching. Â Haha! Â I'm sure I can't recall them all... but I definitely saw the following characters passing by (added purely for your enjoyment):
- Tweenage kid working the door at Pos 4th wearing sunglasses and his little brother's t-shirt (if the kid scratched his ear, you'd see belly button).
- Shirtless jogger by wearing shorts so tiny that Thomas Magnum would wince... yikes...
- Older man and his wife having dinner on the patio with me... and he's wearing a kilt?
- Drug dealer making a fast pot deal on the corner and casually walking away after his broad daylight obvious deal to a really, really nervous college kid.
- Tourists taking photos of the most random things, like the doorways of closed stores they've never been in and can't get into right now.
- Entire family wearing fedoras - not the small hipster fedoras, but the Dick Tracy fedoras.
- Random dreadlocked guy walking with a cane that he switches hands and gaits with like it's not really needed... and his methed out skinny friend that can't keep still or even walk in a straight path with his (fake) limping friend.
- Two random guys walking around with sleeveless shirts, work boots, and Confederate flag ballcaps. Â Classy (spare me the comments - we all know it's BS when you say it's about history - like you really wear that in some statement about 1800s states' rights, protectionism, industrialism, etc...... you're just racist).
- College frat boys wearing more UVA stuff than I've seen at the local gift shops. Â I mean - love your college; that's cool... but is wearing the shoes, shorts, shirt, hoodie, and ballcap all necessary at the same time?
- Guy with a pony tail, tucked in polo, cordoroy pants, and flip flops; well played, sir... well played.
- A LOT of people talking to themselves...
- Live music ensemble setting up stage on the corner. Â Long day at work or I'd stay to have another beer, listen, and continue to people-watch.
Anyway...... if you're a people-watcher...... this patio is a must! Â :)
Cheers!
After scouring Yelp for where to go to dinner in Charlottesville, we settled on Positively 4th. Located right in the downtown mall, it couldn't be easier to get to. Upon walking in, the decor is very 21st century-esque. It was pretty dark, but not overly so. The Washington Nationals game was playing on the flat-screen above the bar. We were seated promptly, even though the place was pretty busy and it was a Saturday night.
I ordered the hangar steak, and my dad got a burger. We also got a salad to share, which was somehow addicting. I ended up eating most of it. The hangar steak was soft and tender, and the sauce was pretty good as well. The french fries were delicious, and tasted good even after being soaked in steak sauce (yum!). It also came with an arugula salad which ended up being a nice component in the dish. My dad said he enjoyed the burger as well.
Service was slightly above average, no real complaints to report at all. I'd definitely give it a try for dinner in C-Ville!
i don't think our waitress was having a good day. and we may have received some of that. she was curt and impatient. sorry lady.
i also don't think the hamburger was grass-fed. there's a specific taste to grass fed beef and it tasted like regular what you get in a grocery store in bulk kind of beef. i also asked for my beef well done and it was medium. i was afraid to send it back so i ate the edges and traded a part of it with my friend.
we got the special, which had horse in the name. it was super spicy and made the hamburger taste better. beef should taste good on its own especially grass fed beef.
i liked my beer. it was similar to blue moon. i think it had white in the name. the place was okay. not sure if it was worth the price.
I enjoyed the new American theme. The menu wasn't that big, but I went for a burger, which was delicious! They also give you the option of selecting a side (I got a side salad) instead of forcing you to get fries with a burger. The restaurant is committed to healthy lifestyle eating and sustainability.
Review Source:Great, comfy little spot.
I tend to get pretty sick of "new American" cuisine - you know the stuff. But everything I have had to eat at 4th Street has been delicious - so much so that I forgot that I didn't like new American food.
The drinks here are very well mixed, and the bar staff is very pleasant. There is a section with benches that is good for groups in addition to the regular bar, so it's a nice place to grab a drink before or after dinner as well. Will be back!
The appetizer and dessert were good, the entree was eh... But the reason I'm giving them one star is because while I was finishing my appetizer, they brought my entree and left it on the table, leaving it to get cold before I even got to it! I have never in my life been to a restaurant that would leave the most important part of the meal on the table, letting it get cold. I felt rushed and ruined my experience. I will never go back and will tell everyone I know to go somewhere else as well.
Review Source:Another wonderful and well-priced restaurant on the Downtown Mall. My group had the 4th St, SW and Mediterranean Veggie burgers, in addition to the Chicken Torta, Hummus and Flatbread and Chips and Queso. We all left extremely satisfied, and less than $100 lighter in our wallets for the four of us.
When going here, keep in mind that the seating is fairly limited and the kitchen is small. So small that they won't even give you a menu to look at when they have to put orders on hold (which seems to be a frequent problem). Nevertheless, this place is worth the wait. It's not hard to waste 45 minutes downtown while waiting to be seated.
Came here late on a Sunday night, and I was quite pleased with my experience. The food is delicious and quite comforting without being overwhelming or too fatty/greasy.
My friend and I started with the poutine, which was delicious. The fries were crisp, and even with the cheese and gravy they weren't overly soggy.
The burgers were good too. They probably weren't the best burgers I've ever had, but they were pretty delicious. The sides were what stood out to me--the grits were pretty good, and the seasonal vegetables (green beans when I went) were wonderful.
I'll definitely be coming here again, and I'll probably bring more friends. Seems like a nice place to have some fun.
I'm a pretty picky (and indecisive!) eater, but every once in a while I like to indulge myself. Such was the case with Positively 4th Street.
My boyfriend and I were in Charlottesville for the day to celebrate our anniversary, and we were looking for a good place to eat dinner. After agonizing between P4S and Tokyo Rose (a safe choice for us), we decided on the former solely because we had never gone there before.
The interior of the restaurant was not what I expected, but I mean that in a good way. It was darker inside, but the booths were pretty spacious, which was great because I hate feeling cramped.
I ordered the lobster roll because I had been curious about it for a while. In hindsight, I should have ordered something else because I hear that New England is where you wanna get that stuff. To be fair, the lobster roll wasn't bad. There was a LOT of lobster meat, and whatever else goes into the lobster roll (mayonnaise? idk) didn't overpower it. I liked that a lot. What I didn't expect was the lobster meat to be cradled by a lettuce leaf, all sitting in a cold bun. Are lobster rolls normally like that? I don't know, but it surprised me. I ended up just eating the lobster meat instead.
My boyfriend ordered some burger, which was ridiculously amazing. The meat was melt in your mouth, and I enjoyed stealing bits of it from his plate. He ordered a side of root vegetables to be spontaneous, but ended up giving them to me. Roots aren't his thing, but they're definitely up my alley!
Other things: fries were good, albeit a little too greasy for me. BUT THEY'RE FRIES, SO WHO CARES. We also had some nachos and spinach dip, which were very good. A little... too good. I'm pretty sure I could have finished a plate on my own. And I believe I ordered a drink, which wasn't too strong for my tastes. You betta believe I finished that thing!
Overall, it was a good dining experience. It was worth the $30/person price tag, imo.
Visiting Charlottesville and chose positively 4 due to yelp reviews. It was a Saturday night and they were full at 6:00. Our food was very good but was not hot enough. The shrimp and grits had plenty of shrimp, buy could have used more grits. The crab cakes were well done too. I would eat here again just not on a busy weekend night.
Review Source:I recently tried the restaurant after hearing co-workers rave about the food and the atmosphere. I happened to try it during Fridays after Five with a large group of friends. Â Of course all the downtown restaurants were busy, but we were easily sitted within 20 minutes.
They have a unique list of speciality drinks and you're bound to find something on the menu you'll enjoy. Â I had a tough time deciding, but ultimately went with the grilled cheese---and I didn't regret the decision. Â The portion sizes were right on, but if you're looking for a place that serves huge portion sizes, you'll be disappointed.
Awesome addition to the mall. Â The service is great, the atmosphere is lovely, and the food is awesome without being overpriced. Â I've had the AM Fog burger (which was ohmygod DELICIOUS) and a really excellent lobster roll! Â In a town where everything falls into "fussy and expensive" or "millers" this is a really nice in-between.
Review Source:Most delicious crabcake sandwich I've ever eaten. Nice ratio of crab to cake and when I pressed the buns together to take a bite the meaty cake was flowing over the sides. For my side I chose the mashed potatoes which went nicely with the sandwich. Rich and creamy though just a tad too creamy, the mashed really hit the spot! For such a reasonable price (I wanna say $8 or $9) I couldn't ask for anything more!
Review Source:Visited last weekend with the fam. We had hoped for outdoor seating, but 4th St doesn't offer the super-shady-below-the-trees seating that other restaurants do. We were pleasantly surprised with the atmorsphere inside the restaurant. Everything looks new and sophisticated with dim (but not too dim) lighting. The kids had mac n cheese (noodles tasted fresh and cheese sauce was homemade) and grilled cheese (sourdough with herby butter flavor and cheddar cheese) with sides (mashed potatoes and fries, respectively). Adults thought it was great, kids thought it was just ok; generally kids don't like their fave dishes to be "improved". Husband and I got burgers. they were juicy and delicious. Definitely recommend the a.m.Fog burger. The fries were GREAT!!! Burgers were around $10 each, soft drinks were $2, kids meals were $5 ea, and the long island tea was $8. We look forward to trying different options the next time we are in C-ville.
Review Source:Went back for a burger and fries and was so impressed with the food. Â I had the 4th Street Burger, which had a bacon marmalade and onion straws on top. Â The fresh cut fries were good also...upon seeing a neighboring table with HUGE onion rings, I wished I had ordered those too! Â My husband had the AM Fog mushroom burger, also delicious. Â We agreed that a combination of the 4th street burger with the AM fog mushrooms would be the perfect burger.
Review Source:Although it was sad to see Enoteca close, I'm a big fan of its replacement! We ate here for the first time last night and enjoyed it immensely. The restaurant has a cool atmosphere, and a great location on the downtown mall for people watching.
I was most impressed to see that you could order any burger as a veggie option (with a local NoBull patty, no less) and did just that! The fries and onion rings didn't disappoint either - brown and crunchy with just the right amount of seasoning.
Try: The SW Burger
We had an early dinner at 4th street before Fridays after 5 and had a great experience. The wine list looked great, the beer list looked just ok, but the cocktails got our attention. We loved our drinks, and the monkey bread appetizer was great. We split a chicken and bacon pizza. The best part of the meal was the pecan pie, which had just a bit of ice cream on top. We will be back.
Review Source:We had dinner there last night for a birthday celebration...we had a great time' excellent burgers, salads, and service. it was everyone's first time there, and the comments were mostly, "great, our new burger joint has been found!!" I had the Southwest burger with chipotle mayo, fries, and side salad...excellent!!
Review Source:Had a great time at Positively 4th Street, the new incarnation of the Enoteca space. Â My husband and I shared delicious roasted beet salad, a mushroom and fontina pizza and really crispy onion rings with an ancho chili ketchup. Â The ketchup alone was worth bottling and selling. Â The service could not have been better. Â Pretty, cheerful girls who buzzed about very efficiently. Â We liked it so much we stopped by for a beer on the patio again last night after a concert at the pavilion. What a welcome addition to the Mall!
