This place is darling! It is small, but narrow. The outside is perfect for people watching or enjoying the weather. I came for happy hour, and the bartender, Joseph, who is very easy on the eyes, recommended a lovely red wine, Chateau de Vaugelas Corbiere. I ordered the flatbread with just pesto since I was just meeting some one for drinks. The flatbread was awesome, but I was still hungry, so I order the fried green beans. The fried green beans were great.

In addition to the cute bartender, nice wine, and great food, the music was banging! I heard everything from Curtis Mayfield to Al Green to Stevie Wonder. I was in love!

A wonderful neighborhood spot on Capitol Hill. We found the food to be tasty and the service to be friendly. Enjoyed meeting here after the National's game.

Randomly ran into this place while going to get my brows done. It is really cool. Check for specific hours because they are open for Breakfast/Lunch and then close to prep for dinner. When I say they close I mean close. You have to leave...lol.

I had "The Italian Elvis" which is an interesting combo of Nutella, Banana, Bacon (optional), drizzled with honey on a Croissant (you choose bread)..this contraption is then grilled. Simply delightful.

The store itself is really cool. Exposed brick walls, Wi-Fi, really cozy...

    Def. will go back!

Cutest place. Hidden gem! They've got a really great dinner menu after 5:30 ... try the BBQ pork pops and the stuffed mushrooms.

If only their happy hour specials were honored at the "bistro" with dinner.

Coffee could be stronger. Croissant sandwich spinach feta and egg was a-okay. Bread was clearly out of a bag and spinach was limp. Expected more based on previous reviews.

We were told we couldn't access the happy hour menu unless we sat in the bar area. The bar area was full. The bar area was 8 feet away from our table and the EMPTY dining room. It didn't seem necessary to point out that a little flexibility in the rules might be appropriate at this moment. The apathetic waiter didn't seem to understand or care. We left.

By far my favorite coffee place in DC. Amazing coffee drinks and smoothies, and the food is excellent. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and somewhat communal in some places (there are private tables, too). The people who work here are super nice and the service is great.

The "transition" to dinner can be jarring if you wanted to stay all day and night at a coffee shop to work (they close around 4 to turn it into a bistro dinner place rather than a coffee shop and everyone has to leave), but once you know that's what's going on, it's fine.

The dinner is great and romantic - they have outdoor seating in the back with strung lights that's really pretty. The BEST SOUP in the world is their chickpea leek soup... but it was a "soup of the day," and I haven't heard of them having it lately since it's been summer (call and ask about their soup of the day). They have a pretty good wine list (not my favorite, but I'm a West Coast wine snob), and usually they'll let you sample the wine before you settle on it, which is great.

Came here for lunch while visiting D.C. It was recommended in the Lonely Plant tour book, and I can see why! It is a little off the beaten path of the Capital Hill tourists sites, which was really nice.

Got the warm roasted veggie wrap- which had zucchini, fennel, onions, feta and basil- on a spinach tortilla. It was more of a panini than a wrap, and it was great!

The place looks solely like a cafe from the outside, so I was surprised to see they had happy hour specials and a dinner menu. Definitely will come back next time i'm visiting.

I love Pound the Hill. The coffee is great, the food is actually really really good and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Great place to grab coffee on your walk to work or to hang out on your computer for a few hours.

My reviews are purely based on the drinks. I did dine here once a long long time ago, and I honestly can't really remember too much about it. I think their duck was pretty good and I posted a couple of photos, so with the 30% off dinner deal at Savored, it might be worth eating here again next time.

I love pound the hill because it offers the best slushy and iced coffee drinks. Their fruit slush is quite phenomenal. Last summer, I tried the watermelon slushy, and it was delicious. They use real fruits and mix them with some herbs. (I am not sure if it was basil or mint....)

Also, the Raspberry Nutella latte is unbelievable! Very rich and fruity, but not too sweet. I took my coworker here after one stressful work day, and the drink cheered us up instantly.

I haven't tried their regular coffee drinks, but I strongly recommend their frozen drinks!

ps: Please bring back the watermelon slush asap! The summer is baccckkk!

Know that this place closes as a cafe around 4 (or 5?) and re-opens an hour later (without wi-fi), at which point it turns int a wine bar. Amazing service, really delicious drinks, and the bean/hummus platter is perfect.

I love trying coffeeshops and I somehow missed Pound for years. I'm glad I went because they now have my favorite croissants in the DC metro area. My boyfriend and I shared a huevos rancheros croissant sandwich and a nutella scone.

He got a nutella latte to drink while I had a pumpkin chai. The drinks were good, but not strong enough on the nutella or pumpkin flavors. The scone was also good; it was crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside so it reminiscent of a cookie. The croissant was my favorite part of the meal. It was light, flaky, and buttery. I would have even liked it plain, without the sandwich! Unfortunately, the barista said they got their croissants from Metropolitan Baking Company, which only sells wholesale.

Pound is a bit expensive, but I would definitely go back for another sandwich and want to try dinner there too! The atmosphere is really cozy with lots of seating and a room in the back so people can get comfortable and stay awhile.

Super comfy, cozy cafe. The waitstaff was nice (not snobby like some other cafe's.) The coffee was so good. I got a muffin as well, which was very good. There is a great vibe here.

Update: Today I ordered the strawberry salad, which was FAN TAS TIC. Lightly oiled and salted baby spinach, fresh sliced strawberries, fried chickpeas, and I substituted an egg (sliced this time) for the feta that usually accompanies it. Everything was fresh and healthy tasting. But they forgot the dressing entirely, which was supposed ot be a blood orange vinagrette. Luckily, I really like the taste of undressed salad, and enjoyed the meal anyway. I am keeping my review at 3 stars because the forgetting salad elements thing seems not to be just a one-off, but a recurring problem.

I'm a pretty avid coffee drinker. I wouldn't call myself a "coffee snob" by any means, but I do love to start each morning with a decent cup of coffee... and after dealing with k-cup coffee at work week after week, I sometimes can't wait for even a cup of Starbucks. But the corporate coffee chain thing has worn itself out in my little world, and I find myself loving "neighborhood" coffee spots like Pound The Hill more and more.

Met up a couple of friends for coffee and breakfast at Pound recently, and I was completely smitten. The neighborhood feel of the place only added to its charm, and the mix of people working (even on a Saturday!), enjoying conversations, and sipping coffee all made my experience all the more excellent.

At the recommendation of my friend, I ordered a large Nutella latte. I wasn't sure what to expect, but after the barista worked that magic behind the counter a super large ceramic mug was waiting for me. It was warm, sweet (but not too sweet, thankfully), and a perfect "jump-start" to my morning. Shortly after, my breakfast came: a huevos rancheros croissant --complete with egg, black beans...the works. The sandwich was also warm and tasty, and for a second there I felt like I was back West at Urth Cafe. Deliciousness all around.

The staff was friendly, but not saccharine sweet -- which is perfect in my book. (Perky-perfect blows, PS.) The service was simple and pleasant. And sitting al fresco on a semi-cool weekend morning made for great people-watching in-between great conversations with friends.

If only I lived closer to CapHill, I would surely make this my local coffee spot. But no doubt, I will make my way here many more times to come.

Come here if you are looking for great customer service and great coffee! I ordered a sandwich right as their system went down (unbeknownst to me) for a minute and they didn't get my order in the system... When it wasn't ready after a bit, I asked where it was they apologized, made it immediately AND gave me a gift card which basically covered my food! They really went above and beyond!

Overall: Romantic little spot for a date. Ordered small plates to share and a glass of red Chilean wine for me (never does me wrong!). Great ambiance and decor. Waitress was a little sloppy with wine service - just brought the glass out without showing me the bottle or asking if I liked it.

Food: baked mozzarella was delectable (ask for more bread because it doesn't come with enough!); bacon sampler (bleh, not that interesting or filling, could've done without it); sweet potato gnocchi (decent, not spectacular); and prime rib sliders (fabulous, I'd order 'em again!!)

Best GroupOn value I've come across!

Pound The Hill probably has to be the best Groupon experience I've had thus far. Usually when I purchase a Groupon and use it, I feel that I tend to get subpar service from the staff once I present it. However, I will say that Pound The Hill was the complete opposite. In fact, I'm going to Tarantino this review and start from the end to explain.

When Carly C and I received the check, the waiter already applied the Groupon without even needing to look at it before hand (He took the code once he handed it to us). We had shown him we had one when we got to the restaurant, however, there was no attitude given and no change in his behavior at all through dinner service. I wish I had his name, but he was one of the most helpful waiters I've had.

The restaurant itself is somewhat minimal, with bare brick walls, red paint, and wood accents. We both loved the simplicity of the bistro side and how fitting it is being in Capital Hill.

Going back to the beginning, once we were seated, our server was quick to explain the specials of the day. We also had a few questions regarding some of the small plates there and he was able to explain them. For starters, we ordered the bacon tasting plate, sweet potato gnocchi, fish "in" chips, and tater tot poutine. The bacon tasting plate was probably the biggest letdown of the meal. For about $8, you're paying for three slices of bacon. You get a piece of overcooked duck, wild boar bacon, and regular pork bacon alongside a dipping sauce of maple with chili. I did enjoy the wild boar a lot, being it was fatty and not too salty. However, the pork bacon was very typical of the Oscar Myers sort and you're essentially paying about $2.66 per slice. Not cool.

The sweet potato gnocchi was recommended throughout the Yelp reviews and did no disappoint. I liked the balance of sweetness and savoriness due to the sage in the dish. The fish in chips I thought were quite good as well. The cod was perfectly cooked however instead of using fries, they used a potato chip breading to mimic the "chips" part of the name. Although I enjoyed the cod, like Carly, I really wanted a side of fries with my cod. It was more like eating a gourmet version of fish sticks. The tater tots poutine was also a disappointment. It was really just tater tots cooked with cheese curds and no gravy.

For drinks and dessert, we both shared the nutella latte. Like as the rest of Yelp, I highly recommend it. Its just that good. We also finished with the doughnuts, which were the other highlight of our meal. Not too sweet, warm, and soft.

Total cost with two glasses of wine was only about $60, without the Groupon. Even so, I'd come back after how our first experience was. There is another Groupon going on now, so I suggest picking one up!

Best Groupon deal ever! Normally I'm just happy that I got a great deal on a sub-par meal whenever I purchase Groupons. Fortunately, and surprising, the one that I purchased for Pound The Hill proved to not only be a great deal, but also a great meal.

There was a little hiccup in the reservation. Eric N. and I had decided to try and change it through http://OpenTable.com to about 45 minutes earlier than originally planned, but for some reason it just won't allow it. There was even a message that popped up that the restaurant wasn't accepting online reservations at the time. Strange, and probably something that is worth it for the restaurant to investigate. It could cost them. Honestly, if my Groupon was due to expire in a few days, I would have just suggested to elsewhere.

Once we got seated (at the original reservation time) things were immediately brighter. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, all the small plates we ordered arrived hot and in a timely manner, and the check was light on the wallet thanks not only to the Groupon but also because of the very reasonable pricing. Overall, I'd gladly visit Pound The Hill again with or without a coupon. It's a comfortable and satisfying restaurant, that promotes the lingering diner to stick around and truly enjoy the tasty treats they offer. My kind of place!

    For the menu breakdown...

    Drinks:

Dante Robino Festivo Malbec 2011: 5 stars. No complaints, and the light smokiness really enhanced the bacon sampling plate. Also, there is a 25% off bottle check-in deal! Just note that it can't be used with any other offer.

Nutella Latte: 5 stars. Does this really need to be explained? Just make sure to order the warm spiced doughnuts with it. The combo puts Krispy Kreme and drip coffee dunking to shame.

    Small Plates:

Bacon Tasting Plate: 2.5 stars. I was really excited about this dish but was sadly disappointed. Granted, what I believe was the wild boar bacon was insanely good; very fatty and not overly salty. It would be great on a BLT. Yum! Also the ancho chili maple dipping sauce was drinkably good. Pound The Hill really got that one right. Sadly the duck bacon was more like a chewy piece of over cooked duck, and the pork was similar to something you can get at a cheap diner. Definitely not worth the average $2.66 a slice that is charged.

Sweet Potato Gnocchi: 4 stars. I liked the texture of these gnocchi a lot. They can occasionally be gummy, but these were a perfect balance of density and chewiness. The fried sage that was dispersed throughout them was the icing on the cake. I would have ordered that on it's own if I could have.

Fish "in" Chips Sticks: 3.5 stars. A once innovative play of fish n' chips where cod is breaded with crushed potato chips and served minus the fries. Kind of more like fish n' chip crust. Not bad in the taste department, but I really wanted some fries.

Tater Tot Poutine: 3 stars. This was one of the St. Patrick's Day specials. It definitely wasn't bad, and would probably be "the most awesomeest thing ever" if you were drunk of green beer. Too bad with a sober mind, the dish was a bit bland and oily. Also, I think they forgot to put gravy on our order...I actually hope they did, because I couldn't tell if it was there or not.

    Desserts:

Warm Spiced Doughnuts: 5 stars. These are very similar to buñuelo. If you're not familiar with the Colombian doughnut, it's round, dense, gently sweet, and so good it will met you hear angels sing with very bite. So good. This is a must try.

I had a Groupon, so we went here for dinner one night and were very disappointed in the food and service. Even with the Groupon deal, we felt robbed.

The only thing we ate that we felt was worth the money was the Affogato Brownie. A shot of espresso poured over a homemade brownie ala mode - a coffee/chocolate lover's dream!

My friend and I went after work today. From the get-go we messed everything up. And Pound rolled with the punches.

We just wanted a glass of wine. Or so we thought. All of the bar seating was full so we asked to sit outside because we weren't going to eat dinner. The host said okay but theres no service out there. We were totally okay with that. Then we decided to order food too. The guy at the register reminded us that they don't so happy hour except in the happy hour seating. Oops. We didn't realize that. He said it was okay though and we thanked him. We took our delicious $5 glasses o wine out to the adorable back patio. A few minutes later hummus came out. The server asked us if we ordered hummus and we greedily said yes! Only later we realized we hadn't actually ordered hummus (though we thought about it). Oops again. Then the rest of our food came out with apologies for the mix up. It was actually totally our fault but the staff didn't miss a beat. They were amazing. The hummus was great. The croquettes were so crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside and amazing. We also got the cinnamon chile popcorn. OMG! Amazing. We sat outside for an hour or so, enjoying the space to ourselves. As it was starting to get dark, one of the staff came to turn lights on. It was quite sweet.

We bussed our own table as promised and made sure the hummus was on our tab. Then left a large time and provided a multitude of smiles. We did everything wrong. The staff did everything right. I can't say enough good things about Pound.

Oh, and I had been by for an Americano earlier in the day. It was great. Go to Pound. For coffee. For wine. For food. For the service. You won't regret it.

My sincere thanks for accommodating us tonight. Next time we come in (and there will be a next time), we promise to do things right: sit where we are supposed to sit, order the things we say we are going to order, and eat the things we actually order :)

I enjoyed this place. It's really charming and cozy inside, the staff are all friendly and helpful, and the food is quite good. We were seated right away and our waiter came immediately to bring us water and offer us drinks, which is always appreciated. When I dropped something under the table, the waiter came over with a flashlight to help me find it, which was really nice.

Many of the appetizers/small plates looked good, but neither of us was hungry enough to order any of them. Next time I'll want to sample some! For our entrees, we got the vegetable pot pie and the pork chop. I was trying to choose between the pork chop, the spicy pasta bowl, and the market fish, which was mahi-mahi tonight. The waiter didn't hesitate to recommend the pork chop, so I went with that. I'm glad I did - it was bone-in and cooked perfectly. The slightly spicy honey mustard rub was a great complement to both the chop on its own and also paired with the red pepper and corn hash. The parsnip mash was creamy and delicious. The vegetable potpie was good, too. There's a nice assortment of veggies in it and the puff pastry topping was nice and light. It is different from a standard potpie, though. The filling was a broth rather than the thick, creamy sauce that is typical of a chicken potpie, for example.

The entire experience was very pleasant and I'm looking forward to returning!

If you tried the pound over at NoMa way back when it was still New York Ave, this is a totally different experience -- in a good way.

Like everyone else, I am here to rave about the AMAZING nutella lattes (and not just because of the nutella in them) and the huevos rancheros sandwich on a croissant. This place just feels homey and like you should settle in and read the paper... it's wonderful.

The main drawback? It's almost impossible to get a seat here!

I have not tried pound for non-breakfast items.

Unfortunately, the word is out! This place rocks and does so for whatever your fancy, be it dining out, coffee and tea, or grabbing a drink.

Between the ginger rose iced tea and their nutella latte or the dark wood furniture and exposed brick, this is the perfect place to unwind, get some reading done, finish some work, or take a romantic prospect out!

I am yet to try the food other than an absolutely amazing apple walnut salad. I mostly go in for coffee and work, but the specials always sound amazing, and a mustard rubbed pork chop sounds like something I shouldn't go long without trying!

The only downside - for me, not for them - is that they are very busy on the weekends - prime coffee and work time, bottom line, this place is prime for food, coffee and wine and totally worth the dime. To not give it a shot is a crime.

I wasn't going to post a review for Pound, but after calling the location directly and being told I'd be contacted back (and never was) as well as writing an email that never received a response, I figured Yelp would be the place to highlight how dissatisfied I was with a visit a group of friends and I had on Saturday, 1/26/13.

First of all, I love Pound and I was a frequent patron for the coffee (the nutella latte is absolutely delicious). This was my first time going to Pound for dinner, and I have to say the food was absolutely amazing. I had the short rib and it was one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. Everything we had food-wise at our table was enjoyed thoroughly, so props to the chef.

My issue was instead with the service. While our server was friendly and enthusiastic, overall I feel that at times she was not attentive. We asked multiple times for two more glasses of water (there were 5 people seated and only 3 had water glasses) and when we finally all had water glasses, the water bottle was never refilled. I literally got up at one point and took one out of the buckets in the corner because we had waited so long. In addition, one entree was not delivered, to the table with the others, and when we pointed this out, our server said she would check on it. She never came back to update us on the order, so after ten minutes of us waiting, the rest of us began eating our entrees. The final entree was ultimately delivered after the rest of the table had finished eating. We were not apologized to for this, and this was included at the bottom of the receipt, which only leads me to believe it was never entered on the ticket. When her meal was delivered, the dessert menu was delivered at the same time, which made the person who had just received her entree to feel very rushed.

At this time, one of us went up to remind the server that we had called ahead to have a dessert delivered as this was for a birthday occasion. The server cut her off and said "Yeah, I've got it." My friend then went to use the restroom and while she was in the restroom (less than one minute later) the birthday item was delivered - both while someone was in the restroom and as the person with the final entree was still eating (and in fact, had only just received it). Not only was the timing of this off, but I had personally called to request the dessert and was told that we could either have the brownie dessert or the gingerbread cake. The "birthday girl" is actually allergic to gingerbread so I requested the brownie. However, the item that was delivered was the gingerbread cake and so ultimately she didn't have any of the dish.

Frustrated with all that had occurred, we spoke to the manager. The manager simply thanked us for letting him know, but we did not receive an apology nor did we feel very heard. Ultimately, I am extremely disappointed in the customer service we received, especially on what was supposed to be a special occasion.

As mentioned, I then called and emailed to pass along my comments for future and use but was never responded to, which just highlights the poor customer service.

Ultimately I'd like to give the dinner 1 star, but the food was so good it warranted more. However, our whole group was so disappointed in the service that none of us will return.

When I went last week around 5:00, my friend and I grabbed the coveted window seat. I'm not sure I'd recommend the transition hour (when Pound the Hill transforms from cafe to bistro), because the place is too quite and can be a little awkward.

Their wines are excellent, and happy hour foods (especially the meatball and tater tots) are fantastic.

I hate to rate the place on the coffee alone, but that's all I had.

My cap was on the better side of OK- a little overextracted, but still good. I can't, in my heart or hearts, judge it on a single drink, but if you're going for just coffee you're probably better off with Peregrine.

A cute place with a really pleasant vibe, though, and I want to go back and actually eat something. That should count, right?

Boyfriend and I dined at Pound the Hill after a day of sight seeing around Capitol Hill. Its a small, dimly lit restaurant that serves up fancy American comfort food in an intimate, and romantic setting. It also doubles as a coffee shop, but you wouldn't really know it at night, as the dining and coffee sipping areas are somewhat separated.

Boyfriend loved his honey fried chicken served with bacon kale and mashed potatoes ($15)

Not being able to make up my mind (they have so many delicious sounding small plates!) I ordered the roasted corn chowder ($5) and sweet potato gnocchi ($8). We also shared tater tots with yummy fancy sauces to start. Although this sounds like a bit of a carbo-load, it was one hell of a delicious meal. Each dish looked like it was carefully crafted and was bursting with flavor. The corn chowder was definitely more of a bisque and very heavy - although delicious, I had to ensue the BF's help to finish it (boys are so helpful when it comes to food). The gnocchi was also quite the treat; laden with cinnamon and drowning in butter, this dish was small but well worth a try.

Lastly, the Parmesan tots were awesome (you can never go wrong with tots) and the sauces provided were really good. In the end, it was more than enough food.

Everything was fantastic (including the service) and our bill came to about $45. Great dinner. Highly recommended.

I see the great reviews here and I wonder if I have exceptionally picky taste buds or something. In any case, I was not that impressed.

Good points: really nice, cozy atmosphere. I didn't order any coffee but maybe it would be a great place for that.

Negatives: service is touch and go, the food is over-priced for what it is, menu descriptions were not very accurate

My friend and I went there for dinner - we were greeted by the hostess who seemed pleasant enough and seated us in the hallway by the bathroom. As it was pretty much the worst table in the restaurant and since we saw empty tables, my friend asked if there was any chance we could be seated elsewhere. She was surprised at the hostile response from the hostess who said those were reserved for people who actually made reservations (as if to say, you are 2nd class because you didn't make reservations). Ok, but the attitude was not necessary and left a bad impression.

After, we were waiting for what seemed to be a very, very long time before anyone came to our table. I eventually asked for service and the waiter who filled in for ours (temporarily) really saved the night - he was so nice and accommodating - really great service, too bad we couldn't have him the whole night.

Food - sorry to say that I was not at all impressed. I did enjoy the baked mozzarella appetizer even if the tomato sauce tasted like it came from a can. I love cheese anyway.

The vegetable pot pie looks amazing on the menu but when it came...umm, I didn't know what to do with it. I was wondering why the waitress gave me a spoon - a more accurate description would be a vegetable pot soup. The crust was nice and flaky...so deceptive though because as soon as I broke into it...water everywhere (umm, maybe some cornstarch would have helped?!?!) And it was less flavorful than my friend's potato saffron soup. It was really so bad that I asked to return it for the soup (which I asked for without the bacon but they put bacon on it anyway). It was good, just a little too much black pepper for my liking.

Still hungry, I ordered dessert: yum, I thought, a "warm winter pear and apple crisp". So I get it but...where is the crisp??? It was basically sliced fruit cooked in butter and cinnamon. It was good but it was not a crisp!

I left somewhat hungry and dissatisfied...won't be back for a meal, maybe just coffee if I'm in the area.

Back in August when I heard that Pound was dangerously close to going under, I tried to make a point to visit more regularly. I've since been for dinner, happy hour a number of times, and regularly for coffee.

Happy hour is solid. The prices are competitive with other places on the Hill, and if you want a beer or glass of wine but don't want to deal with the typical bar atmosphere, this can be a great option. As others have noted however, space is very tight if you try to bring a group.

Dinner was really a pleasant surprise. My wife and I were both impressed with the food - both the taste and the presentation. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for and we can't afford to eat at nice restaurants more than just occasionally. Still, I recommend trying it if it's in your price-range.

The coffee shop is still my go-to place for caffeine on the Hill. I've brought a number of out-of-town guests here for coffee and all reviews have thus been positive.

Delicious coffee and dessert-worthy espresso drinks (when I really want to treat myself I'll order a Nutella latte). When I used to work on Capitol Hill I would stop by this coffee shop whenever I had a chance. It's relaxed and rarely so packed you can sit and read the paper while enjoying the freshly brewed coffee.

The food is also quite good - I've had delicious breakfast croissant sandwiches and lunch items as well. I know they've started doing full meals as well in the evenings. I never had a chance to try this out, but the menu looks fantastic. I love the idea of a coffee shop turned casual eatery in the evenings!

Why go to Starbucks when there is a great independently owned coffee shop just a block away? I never understood this...Pound the Hill - wish you were closer to my neck of the woods.

There are few things in life that a solid cup of coffee can't fix. There is literally nothing that a Nutella latte and a huevos rancheros sandwich on a croissant can't fix.

Both of these things can be found - and totally should be - at Pound the Hill.

I LOVE this little coffee shop. Nestled perfectly between the craptastic offerings of the low-budget coffee fare and the mega-chain Starbucks, you can pull over, double park (because let's be serious, we're not gonna pay), and grab this uber tasty morning snack.

I've only had the pleasure of coming to Pound for breakfast. Their coffee is great. Also, they have a solid breakfast selection. I absolutely love their yogurt parfaits. Fresh fruit & granola with organic yogurt. Not to mention that I love visiting local coffee shops to support owners as opposed to a Starbucks - and let's be honest. Starbucks coffee isn't that great....

Every other Tuesday morning, I meet a group a friends before work. We can almost always find our same table. It's nice & quite in the mornings which makes it a perfect place to catch up with friends.

I know they have an awesome patio out back that I have never used. Also, every time we are in, we talk about coming back for dinner or happy hour because their specials are great. And I keep seeing some deliciously described lunch items that I haven't had a chance to try just yet.

If you want to grab a cup of afternoon coffee, be sure to do it before 4pm. They close between 4 & 5pm to get ready for the dinner/happy hour crowd. It's a great business concept that truly make Pound a gathering place & not just another coffee shop among the crowd.

It's a great break off of the 8th Street restaurants. Being hidden on Penn Ave keeps it from getting overrun with tourists. I'm looking forward to headed there soon & trying a full meal!

My sister lives around the corner from this place, so whenever I visit we go in for coffee. This weekend when getting coffee, which was delicious, I noticed a French dip sandwich come on the counter. It looked amazing so we tried it. It was fabulous. Not over complicated but just done perfectly.

With such success in lunch, we made a dinner reservation and were pleasantly surprised. I had always thought this was just a coffee shop but the food is great. I had the mussels and my sister had the beef short rib. Both dishes were great but the short rib was by far the best.

We will be back on Saturday.

    Cozy spot in Eastern Market!

Pound the Hill is a great spot to stop in for a glass or two of wine after dinner in Eastern Market. The wine by the glass list is small, but it had some unique and delicious choices. I haven't tried the food, but I'll definitely be back. The staff is very friendly.

I am greatly saddened about having to write this review. I have been a big supporter of Pound since they introduced the wine bar concept and have frequented Pound during the evening hours. However last night we invited some friends for the suburbs to celebrate my partner's birthday at our favorite local place Pound and it could not have been more disastrous!

We walked in and said there would be 4 of us for dinner, but since it is still happy hour we would like to have a couple drinks first. We were told that we could not be seated at a dining table and receive the happy hour specials. We had to stay in the bar area. Well if you have ever been to Pound you know that there isn't much of a bar area and there were 4 of us. So they shuffled us outside to a table. After sitting outside for at least 10 minutes with no water or server I went back into the restaurant to ask when I could expect service. Finally Joseph came out with water and took our order. A table opened up inside in the bar area soon after so they moved us there. It was a tight squeeze for the 4 of us, but we were happy not to be bitten by mosquitoes.

Let me also mention that Joseph tried to defend their happy hour/dining policy rather than apologizing. I told Joseph that we invited friends from the suburbs to our neighborhood fave, but we are embarrassed at how we are being treated.

We wanted to eat dinner so that meant yet another move to the back of the restaurant so we could do dinner. At that point we decided that we should cut our losses and go elsewhere for dinner. I am extremely disappointed about this experience, especially as a regular.

We will not go to Pound after this experience.

Side note: We went to Sonoma Wine Bar and ended up having a fabulous meal and wine and received excellent service just 4 blocks away.

After six, hit and miss weeks at umpteen restaurants in the great nation of the US of A we finally found a place with the perfect combination of value, ambience, great service and fantastic, well balanced food. A place of character truly worth of a perfect five stars.

Of course the happy hour drinks helped add value but what a great way to get into a good groove with a few cheap but good beers, wines and snacks ;; hummus with lovely pita; great chicken, prosciutto and cheese croquettes with dijonnaise and honeycomb. good times continued to roll with happy hour beer and wine so we felt compelled to order some of the main menu starters: fennel encrusted duck salad with red and black sugar plum, heirloom tomatoes beetroot and aged gouda; seared Ahi tuna with avocado puree, mandarin, bacon marmalade and leaves. Both were a fantastic marriage of flavors . . . . . all we can say is delicious. the duck was particularly well cooked.

Having been completely wooed be the opulent experience we were helpless to refuse the chocolate ganache nut brownie affogato (which means drowned as we found out), topped off the night quite superbly; the espresso was the best we've had in this county.

    Well done, a perfect experience.

Disclaimer: this review is only for a happy hour experience. Which is awesome.

From 5-7, Pound the Hill offers up 4 apps, 4 choices of wine, 4 beers all for $4. Even for the area, that's a pretty awesome deal. And they don't skimp on the pours or the deliciousness of the appetizers either. My friends and I who stopped by here on a recent Wednesday definitely took full advantage. I would do a special plug for their Cordon Bleu Croquettes, which were perfectly fried and still oozing with cheese once you cut into it.

The wooden tables and dimly lit dining space gives off a very relaxing vibe...perfect for a relaxing afternoon drink or meal. From what I've heard, the weekends can be packed and finding a seat to enjoy a coffee and a book may be difficult to achieve. But if you happen to find yourself nearby and can find a spot to sit, definitely find your way into Pound the Hill.

Why choose between hazelnut & chocolate when you can have them both? The iced Nutella Latte: God in Latte form.

Kevin G. recommended the Iced Nutella Latte. Based on his review (and the irresistible nature of Nutella) I shelled out the $4.36, and was not disappointed.

The best latte I've ever had.

I slowly sipped and savored every slurp. The way I see it: why choose between hazelnut & chocolate when you can have them both?

Also, the space here is INCREDIBLE! Entrance looks like a normal coffee shop, but then it extends into the back (with a separate dinning room with books) and even an outdoor patio with trees to keep you nice and cool in the shade.

Only complaint is my friend, Rob, thought the iced coffee was WAY BETTER at Peregrine.
