I'm like watching the last 5 minutes of Jeopardy, and right before the bonus question a guy walks into the bar and asks the waitress to turn to racing.
Now, I'm here answering questions, enjoying the show. Â Does she ask me if it's ok? Â NOooo. Â Just turns to racing, and the race hasn't even started yet!
Anyway the food was ok
Tried out this place with a group of co-workers (5 total) for lunch. Â Everyone liked it. Â Food was very good, and in good portions. Â The prices weren't too bad, either. Â The plates were mostly between $8-12 each. Â The menu is what would put this place over the top of other sports grills, for me. Â Not that it's a huge selection, but more than a few items that caught my eye and sounded great. Â I had the BBQ salmon w/ rice, which was great. Â My coworkers got the shrimp mac & cheese and they said it was good.
I had never been to the former "Pi" since Mediterranean food doesn't appeal to me that much. Â That said, I'm glad I finally checked out the "Pub". Â Seems like a pretty good place to catch a game and/or a drink. Â It seemed like they had decent Happy Hour prices and beer selections.
Our waiter wasn't the best, but not bad either.
Update as of September 2010 Pi is now the Pub. Â I was dragged here after it changed over by some coworkers who love it for the brick oven pizza. Overall, pretty much the same food as Pi with more of a sports bar look and feel except now the waitresses all wear uniforms that make them look like they are auditioning for a Whitesnake music video. Â
They screwed up my order last time I was there and everything was pretty greasy. Â Our server was kinda snappish with one of my lunchmates. The handicapped parking is oddly further away from the entrance than many non-handicap spots. Â Limited outdoor seating.
As local residents near this restaurant, we decided to give it a shot. After all, we're advocates of small MI owned business. We had the pizza here, but it was nothing special.
But i'm not here to talk about PI's over priced, undistinguished food. I'm here to talk about the PI catering hall in the back.
Our friends had their wedding here; it had to be the worst wedding i think i've ever attended; and i dont have the heart to tell them that information.
Let me just state from the very beginning, it was crowded, uncomfortable, and the service was poor. The food was decent, but our hosts had that catered in.
Anyway, let's get to the highlights: half way into the evening, a couple of the guests were assaulted by the manager of the restaurant. We dont know why; but we're sure it wasnt anything serious.
The grand finally consisted of that same manager (owner) yelling at everyone to get out of the facility...while clapping hands to get peoples attention. He was joined by some waitstaff in this masquarade.
How embarrasing for the hosts AND the guests. We'll be talking about this reception for the rest of our lives, and it won't be in a good way.
These people don't know what they're doing. You cannot run a joint like this 'mafia' style. When i think of this restaurant, all i do is pray it closes so it cannot share any more misery with anyone else.
I apologize if this review is sharing all bad, but i'm compelled to warn others.
Beware.
In the meantime, if the owner reads this... you need to run this place like a business, cater to the customer needs, be more professional, and (-minus) the emotion AND the clapping.
This is a very confused restaurant. The entrance is awkward - the front door is not in the front, its on the side. There is a lounge area that they clear for live music, the bar area, and the main dining area. Things looked like they were not in the right place. When we walked in we walked past the dining room to get to the hostess who was blocking the bar area. It just didn't make much sense from the beginning.
The beer and wine menu was nice, it had a variety of European selections. We ordered the saganaki, and two entrees. I don't exactly remember what my husband had, I think it was the linguine with clam sauce. I had one of the specials that was chicken covered in cheese over pasta. One thing is for sure they do not skimp on the portions.
Everything was ok. I might come back with a coupon . . .
We were a bit hesitant to try Pi, seeing as how the only review was two stars and almost two years ago, but we had a http://restaurant.com coupon, so we thought why not. And you know what? It was pretty darn good.
We were there fairly early since we had just come from an afternoon performance at the Detroit Opera House, so the place was just about empty. The decor was...interesting. Meaning it looked nice...except for the multicolored country flags hanging above the dining room. I know their "theme" is "European Styled Cuisine" and the flags represent the countries of food they serve...but the flags just seemed out of place and did NOTHING for the atmosphere.
Our waiter arrived promptly at our table and we had our drinks in a few moments. A few items looked good, so I asked his opinion and (of course) he said they were all good! I told him I would be hard to please with the pierogies because I am Polish and have a certain level of expectation, and he told me that "just last week a Polish grandmother was in and asked who was back there making these because they tasted so good." I knew they couldn't possibly be that good, but I was tempted anyway.
When the waiter came back, he told us that some of the dishes on the menu were different than we'd be expecting, and then proceeded to explain that the fish and chips was battered with shoestring potatoes, baked, and it didn't come with tartar sauce. Then explained something else about another dish. It just seemed a little odd. Granted, the specific info about the dishes SHOULD have been on the menu description, but it wasn't.
That said, the menu descriptions could really use some work. We ordered the French Onion Soup (pretty tasty!) and, well, that description was okay... But I did end up ordering the Pierogies (menu description: Dumplings stuffed with cheese and potatoes) and they came covered in a rich and creamy Alfredo sauce! Â As far as I know, that is NOT a typical Polish version of the dish...so I really think that should have been in the description. But I have to admit it was tasty.
Hubby ordered the Shepards Pie (menu description: Steak tips, mashed potatoes, and cheese with gravy, green onions and tomatoes) and it was actually cheesy mashed potatoes with a mushroom sauce and no green onions). The steak tips were overcooked, too (we ordered medium rare and they were medium well). And it came in a dish about the size of New Jersey (see pic)! Hubby said it was tasty.
Our drinks were kept refilled (always a plus) and our waiter was good--just enough conversation to be nice but not enough to be annoying. We opted for the Lava Cake for dessert and while it was yummy, it was not $8 yummy.
We got our check pretty quickly and were heading to our car with the leftovers when our waiter came running out after us. I immediately thought hubby forgot his credit card, but the waiter was carrying a to-go container. Hubby hadn't forgotten his, so we were curious. Turns out it was some to-go desserts on the house--as a thank you for hubby's military service!
It was a little pricey for what you got and the menu descriptions could use a rewrite, but overall we had a nice experience: a good (competent!) waiter, good food, and decent atmosphere.
The former Excalibur's attempt at resurrecting itself by updating and going "eclectic European" fails miserably. It's always sad when an institution goes under, but it's even sadder when they pull a half-hearted stunt like this.
The service was atrocious, and the kitchen was slow. The waitress spent most of her time sitting near the kitchen, not checking on her tables. They brought my salad out and not my fiancee's, and it took another 10 minutes for hers to come up. It was nothing elaborate; just a simple caesar. When I wanted a drink refill, I had to alert the maitre d', who pretended to be busy with other tables. I'd estimate we waited over 30 minutes after finishing our salads before our entrees came, and at that point, we weren't even interested.
Between the long wait, the inattentive server, and the "live music", a Michael McDonald wannabe singer/sax player doing his horrible renditions of classics over prerecorded music, our meal was bordering on comical.
She ordered a pizza, and it looked like it had come out of the microwave. I had a dish out of the ordinary for me, pasta with lamb & veal ragu. My pasta wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. We wouldn't go back. I'm shocked it's the same owners as Il Posto.
