Been here many times and the food is always on par, but the service is most often HORRIBLE. Â The servers rarely if ever fill drinks unless it is coffee. Â They conveniently forget to bring hot sauce or ketchup- even when they are the ones who ask you if you would like it. Â Â I know the waitresses are busy, but if they have so many tables that they give horrid service then it is time to put another server on the floor. Â The busboys deserve more tips than the horrid and unfriendly waitresses. Â I say waitresses because they are ALL female. Â Dear owner- expect more from your employees.
Review Source:Silver hair alert! Usually, a lot of silver hair means one thing "The food might suck, but you get a lot of it." This place fits the stereotype. I had high hopes for this place walking in, as they had a bunch of cars in the parking lot and a co- worker recommended it. The sausage and bacon had a taste not to my liking. Here is the funny part: They make a huge egg omelet with one of those turnover machines off TV. It was dried out and nasty. The breakfast came super fast, which means everything was pre-cooked and/or microwaved. We took mostly all of our food home and threw it away. Again, they have huge portion sizes and some people may enjoy quantity over quality!
Review Source:Short version:
Good - food is very tasty, menu offers lots of choices, and the portions are enormous.
Bad - our waitress's demeanor made it quite clear that we were taking up time that she could be better spending with her regulars and didn't seem to care if we knew it.
Long version:
My daughter had gone here for breakfast with her boyfriend and she loved it, so she, my wife and I went for breakfast one weekday morning. My first impression was that it is quite poorly laid out, but given that it is in a strip mall, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.
The menu contains a HUGE variety of breakfast items, and since it was the first time my wife and I had been there, we began perusing. Within two or three minutes, the waitress appeared and asked us if we were ready to order, and she seemed a bit put off when we said no. She took our drink orders and said she'd be back. She soon returned with our drinks, and asked what we would be having. I said that we were still not quite sure, and she sighed and stood there as if we were wasting her obviously very precious time - the idea of asking if we needed a few more minutes was obviously not an option for her. Rather than make a scene, we ordered, with my wife requesting that her eggs be cooked extra-extra well done.
After a somewhat long wait (during which my coffee cup sat lonely and empty until we flagged down a busboy), the food arrived. My wife's eggs were not done to her satisfaction, so she asked that they be sent back - the waitress was obviously nonplussed, mumbled something about special requests, and took my wife's plate back. It was over 15 minutes later before she brought the plate back. and dropped the check at the same time. We never saw her at our table again, and were never asked if we wanted refills on our beverages. Now, during this whole time, we did see her talking and joking with customers that she obviously knew as regulars...not sure how many times one has to eat there before they receive that sort of service from her, but suffice it to say that we probably will not be finding out.
That said, the food was delicious, and the portions were very generous; too bad it will be the lousy service from a disinterested (and sometimes visibly annoyed) waitress that we remember.
Happened to be in the area around 830am on Saturday and decided to stop by. Was surprised at how crowded it already was and had to wait about 10 minutes or so. More and more people just kept coming in (with lots of little kids). It's as I expected....a diner that needs updating but the food and service were good. Had the Farmer's Pete omelette with pancakes and the omelette was HUGE (had to take home some of the omelette and hash browns, but ate the yummy pancakes). Would stop by again if in the area, but not worth the drive otherwise. On par with Dapper's in Addison, Spring Garden in Carol Stream, and Mapleberry in Carol Stream. Though the gentleman that seated us looked familiar.....perhaps from one of the previously mentioned restaurants? Didn't feel rushed at all and there were always people waiting to get seated.
Review Source:Decor is super drab and uninviting as was the owner who seated me. He never smiled and was drenched in cologne- a total turn off for me especially around food.
When I go for breakfast, I like a good cup of coffee and always prefer half & half in one of those little silver pitchers. That way the cream stays super cold and I don't end up with 20 little opened cream containers on the table...which is what they use here.
I had my traditional restaurant breakfast: 2 over medium with bacon and hash browns crisp, please. Eggs tasted blah- unlike a few other places in the burbs that obviously serve farm fresh eggs and use real butter. Not here.
Bacon was decent- not too thin, but came to the table dripping in grease.
Potatoes were also tasteless and made from frozen, not fresh.
Waitress was efficient and pleasant but because of the food, I won't be back.
Thumb's down...
We have tried to like this place on multiple occasions. Â In fact, we've been there 4 times before writing this review. Â From the layout of the room, to the quality of the food, to the service...I just can't get excited about this place.
FAIR WARNING: Â Don't attempt to get a table from 8am - Noon on a Saturday or Sunday or you can plan on waiting for up to 45 minutes in an overcrowded, poorly designed waiting area. Â It's total chaos. Â And, it's just not a good experience. Â Couple that with many of the tables (and, we seem to get one of them each time) are in direct alignment with the kitchen doors which are smack dab in the middle of the dining room. Â Again, not well planned.
The food is edible but nothing special. Â In fact, we have often been either served the wrong thing, ingredients are missing, or the quality is less than desirable. Â If you're gonna fight your way to a table in the line of fire of the kitchen doors, then, the food better be darn good to justify it --- unfortunately, Randall's Pancake House & Restaurant just doesn't stack up.
But, if you like chaos, loud busboys, and a disorganized mess, then this is the place for you.
I went here with my step-Mom a few yrs ago when they 1st opened and it was terrible. I thought perhaps it was because they were new & I decided to give it another try & went with my bff last yr and it was still not good. Â Today I was stuck going there again, not my choice, and it is worse then when I went the 1st time. Just like baseball 3 strikes your out. Today I ordered an egg-white omelette with spinach, mushrooms, onions, and broccoli which came with 2 pancakes and fruit. The omelette I sent back because my onions were raw and the broccoli was not cooked enough and the mushrooms were funky. My pancakes were dried out, rubbery and lukewarm. The syrup was very watery like they were trying to save money and cut the maple or sugar? Also the syrup was ice cold, nothing worse then putting ice cold syrup on a pancake! YUCK! The only thing edible was my sliced banana. The front door to the restaurant is very heavy and I was unable to open it as I have a Neurological Disorder and I motioned to get the Front Mng to open it and he just walked away. Definitely not Handi-Cap Accessible. I was there about 11:50 AM and there were only 7 full tables with mine being 8 and the food cook time for this simple breakfast was VERY long. No excuse for a uncrowded restaurant that only serves breakfast & lunch to take this long.
Better breakfasts & customer service can be found at Denny's, Ihop, Panera, & Corner Bakery for less money as well.
My husband, I, and my family love this place. Â As far as breakfast goes, this is the best place in the area. Â Menu is large, and I've tried many different things, and love them all. Â If you're looking for modern, artsy dishes and flavors, like you'd find in little eateries in St. Charles and Geneva, this is not the place for you. Â If you want some good old fashioned breakfast (or lunch), then this place is great. Â Good prices, generous portions.....and yes, there is usually a small wait.
Review Source:Sunday brunch was extremely crowded and chaotic. The staff seemed disorganized and had trouble keeping track of who was on the waiting list. The service was OK once we got to our table, but the food was just average. The food arrived quickly, but it was not very good. I ordered the Greek Isle omelet, but it barely had any tomatoes and the feta cheese was not even melted. The hash browns were also undercooked. The portions were good sized, but who wants big portions of bland food?
Rise and Shine Pancake House, Paul's or Baker Hill Restaurant are much better options.
The best compliment I can give this place, is that I actually look forward to going to it, whether it be by myself or with my family. Â We have been coming here since they opened and have been happy every time we leave. Â I love the breakfast, and have yet to have a bad one here. Â Servings are very generous and wait staff is very nice. Â It does get very busy here on weekends, so if you go on Saturday or Sunday, try to get there before 830a. Â Any later and you can expect to wait for a table. Â But, isn't that a good sign that people are staying and waiting just to eat there? Â I think it is! Â I would recommend this place to anyone who was in the area looking for a good breakfast!
Review Source:I have been here several times for breakfast, and the food and service are usually good. A few weeks back I had a breakfast meeting with a coworker, and we were there for 2 1/2 hours. Having a lot of restaurant experience, I carefully surveyed the dining room to make sure we were not hurting the restaurant's revenue. About 90 minutes into the meeting / meal, the server started ignoring us. Then as coffee cups sat empty, all the servers on our half of the dining started ignoring us. It was a conspiracy to kick out 'the campers'. After assertively flagging down our server, she had the gall to come to the table and state, "my, aren't we camping today." Stunned, I informed her of my restaurant back ground and told her we would tip accordingly. I left $10 on a $22 tab. Since that incident, I have had 5 breakfast meetings at Colonial Cafe. Great people, no judgments, highly recommend this restaurant group. As for Randall Pancake, probably will never be back.
Review Source:We've been visiting Randall's since the day it opened and have brought many friends here for weekend brunches. The menu is extensive and has a little something for everyone. The food is tasty and the quality has seemed above average, until our most recent visit. The milk we had ordered for our toddler was served to him spoiled. It both smelled and tasted horrific. Once we could catch our server's attention (which took a particularly long time,) she seemed genuinely surprised, tried it herself (ick) and agreed, but didn't apologize. She did offer to get us more, but we declined. But we were charged for it. And really, how does a crowded breakfast place even have spoiled milk lying around?? On this last visit, it took a solid 25 minutes to receive our food from the time we ordered, much longer than we had experienced here previously at a similar time of visit. And since they've raised their menu prices, I definitely feel as if the value has gone down. All in all, our last bad experience at Randall's was enough to keep us from visiting here again. Next time we'll head across the street to Panera.
Review Source:We had lunch at this restaurant today and it sticks out as one of the worst meals I've had in recent memory. Â The restaurant is awkwardly layed out and kind of tacky inside. Â The waiting area is huge but has basic lawn chairs for their seating. Â After standing at the front desk for 5 min. someone finally came up and seated us. Â The menus were very dirty, dried coffee and syrup on mine. Â I did their lunch special for a a french dip which came with soup. Â The chicken noodle soup was very salty and the actual sandwich was DISGUSTING. Â The meat was pressed meat and had the consistency of rubber. Â The fries looked like they had been in the deep fryer for a hour too long. Â The au jus was even more salty than the soup. Â Above all, the waitress was non-existent. Â I went through most of the meal with an empty drink. Â There was literally 3 other people in the restaurant and the service was that bad. Â I complained about the meal being un-edible and she did take it off the bill. Â I know this is minor, but our soup bowls were never taken away after we finished and the service was just really horrible. Â There are MUCH better places out there, try Colonial down the street.
Review Source:Good breakfasts, good service. The lunch menu attracts me but I have only been around for the morning offerings. The restaurant is popular, a number of groups seemed to be seated on our last visit, so, as with all things popular, it pays to arrive early to avoid waiting. The parking lot being located in a narrow strip mall off Randall is a bit cramped. I had some difficulties after breakfast myself yesterday morning after a bacon omelette, which was quite fluffy, but my spouse who also had bacon with her brekky was alright.
Review Source:My husband & I frequent the restaurant for Sunday breakfast. Â Wait times can be extensive later in the mornings, best to go early. Â The waiting are is huge, but has limited seating, many people end up having to stand. Â I've never understood that. Â Also later on Sunday mornings there is a clown making balloons. Â C R E E P Y. Â I hate clowns, which is why they lost a star.
Service is always prompt once you get seated, food is always cooked properly, seasoned well, and large portions. Â We've never eaten a bad meal there. Â The cream of chicken soup on Sundays is so yummy. Â We wish they were open later for dinner!
I will only give this place one star on account that my family was seated in a timely manner for Sunday brunch. I ordered an omelet with chorizo sausage. I don't react too well with spicy foods apparently so within hours of eating here, I felt horribly sick to my stomach and felt sick for 6 days straight from eating here.
Review Source:Great breakfast place, except for a couple of things...
What's with the little glass enclosed waiting area with enough standing room for 35 and enough seating for 6?
What's with the balloon twister clown?
I guess the clown keeps a couple kids happy, but honestly clowns are starting to creep me out. Is it just me?
But the good news is that the service is outstanding here, even when it's busy on a Sunday. The food is consistently great as well. Portions are BIG, selection extensive.
Highly recommended! Just avoid making eye contact with the clown, that's how they steal your soul! Next thing you know they're twisting balloon voodoo dolls of you after you get your table.
This is an independent restaurant, and a little different from many breakfast restaurants in that it's a bit more understated. There isn't a lot of crap on the walls, which I like. I don't understand when "breakfast" became synonymous with covering the walls in junk. But I guess a lot of restaurants are into that these days.
We've been there several times, and have never had to wait more than 20 minutes when we've been there. The the food is pretty good, and the service isn't bad, either. The prices are pretty good, although the juice seems to be a bit expensive to me, as well as the hot chocolate. Pancakes are good, too - something one would expect from a pancake house, but it's not always the case. Their apple pancake is the biggest I have ever seen. It comes in two sizes, and when I ate with someone who was really hungry, he got the larger of the two. Somehow he shoved down half of it... the entire thing seemed to be the size of a medium pizza.
My only complaint is the fact that their omelets don't have the option of pancakes as a side - only hashbrowns & toast, and maybe one other thing. I really like to have an omelet, but I also enjoy pancakes, and here I can't get them both without ordering the pancakes as a side.
