Being situated in the crappy town of Columbus, Indiana, I didn't have high hopes for this place. But dang, they manged to not live up to those expectations. I got miso soup, a green salad, and a dynamite roll. The miso soup was so strong. I don't think they cooked the seaweed at all, as it smelled and tasted very, very strongly of fish. The green salad was decent. The dressing was good. But how do you manage to screw up a dynamite roll? It was falling apart and the salmon was cold. My boyfriend got tom uum soup and basil fried rice with shrimp. I'm not sure what that soup was, but it was definitely not tom yum. It was thick and tasted of shrimp, even though it was ordered with tofu. The basil fried rice was just ok. It wasn't thai basil fried rice, but it was edible.
Won't go back here. Ever. I just gave it two stars for the salad.
Ate here twice. Â First time would rate as a 4 and second time a 2. Â So average rating of a 3.
First visit my husband and I both had nice stir fry dishes, which were very tasty, well spiced and fresh. Â Sevice was prompt.
Second visit was on a very crowded Thursday night. Â Seemed to be some confusion as to which server was to wait on us. Â Ordered the Thai salmon. Â Did not like the sauce at all -- seemed to be a watered down ketchup. Â There was a hair in my husbands dishr.
I will give it another try but will choose a non-busy night.
I had high hopes from the menu they distributed through the mail, but was unimpressed. Went at 1:30pm for the 3 roll lunch special. We arrived and only 2 other parties were in the restaurant, but the hostess made us stand and wait at the doorway while she finished sweeping up the floor by the hostess stand... then seated us at a table right behind the only occupied table in the section....I hate when they do that! So, I requested to be seated one table down...to give them AND us seating space and she looked at me very confused. We ordered, the waitress didn't write anything down, which scared me...but our order was correct...so no complaints there. The miso soup was just a packet mixed with hot water, definitely not made at the restaurant. I picked the tuna/avocado roll, the spicy tuna roll, and the shrimp/asparagus rolls. My husband got the yellowtail roll, spicy tuna and California rolls. Â He said it was the worst Cali roll he had ever had...I tasted it and agreed...it was almost rotten cucumber...not good. The spicy tuna was the minced tuna mixed with sauce..not a big deal, but definitely lower quality than other area sushi options. I had to ask twice for a water refill when my glass was completely empty, not because I'm a camel, but because the water came in a small stem glass-not a regular soda/drink glass. :)
All in all, completely unimpressed with quality of food and competency of staff. Would consider trying once more, but with at least two better sushi options in Columbus, probably not.
The service was poor. Couldn't get a waiter and then had 3 different people help us. The primary one  didn't speak English that well. A lot of folks around us got the wrong food & we did too. Hopefully they will get it worked out. They seem nice but unorganized.
Food was average strip mall Asian. I'm from Chicagoland so we have a lot of choices. This wouldn't be one we would go to as there are better options near us.
Ru Yi was a nice alternative to hitting up a chain during our roadtrip to Indy yet I still left feeling perplexed...
So you have tofu available.
Why are you not able to substitute another protein (chicken) for tofu in a dish?
For example, our waitress had a hard time grasping our orders and I think I threw her for the ultimate loop (really??) when I asked if they could substitute tofu in the General Tso Chicken. She looked confused and told me no.
As a professional vegan, I have NEVER had any dining establishment deny this request if they have tofu on their menu. I didn't want to be a pest nor create and uncomfortable moment so I just ordered the Teriyaki Tofu as she suggested but knew that thus request was easy peasy....
Besides that, the food was tasty and the restaurant was quite nice especially for something that is right off the freeway.
It is highly unlikely that I will dine her again but that's just due to location but Ru Yi seems to offer a nice selection of Asian cuisine including an extensive sushi menu.
Just don't ask for anything that is not printed "as is" on the menu!
I concur with all the positive reviews. Â I have eaten at this place four times now, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Â Their sushi rolls are fresh and tasty...far better than most places you're going to find in Indiana, much less dinky-poop Columbus. Â I've also had their yellow curry chicken which was quite good (the curry was not too watery and not too thick...perfect). Â I have to say, I have had a hard time tracking down good places to eat while living in Columbus but this was one of the few I managed to find. Â Word of advice: the lunch time menu is significantly cheaper though the dinner menu has much more variety (especially if you want special sushi rolls). It's worth it to try this place out.
Review Source:One of the nicest places to eat in Columbus, IN.
If you like sushi and are in the Columbus area, this should definitely be a consideration. The place is clean with little decoration. Lights aren't overly bright. A simple, pleasant atmosphere.
My only complaint is the servers were overly helpful. Three different servers stopped at our table to see if we were ready to order. We politely responded that we needed a little more time but it wasn't long before the next person would stop and ask. Many different people stopped to take our order, deliver drinks or food and just to check on us. So the service is great, maybe even too helpful.
We had a variety of sushi as well as the curry chicken. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The curry chicken was a nice combination of vegetables and meat, not too heavy on either. The curry sauce tasted really good, a nice spicy kick.
The sushi was great. I have to be in the mood for sushi, its not something I eat much of. My wife is close to being a connoisseur, she could probably eat nothing but. We both left full and pleased.
Prices are what I'd expected, $10-20 a person. They have a variety of sushi, both in types and quantities...platters sized from a few varieties for a couple up to huge platters for parties.
Overall, a nice place to get fresh Asian cuisine.
Some of the best Asian food I've ever had in Indiana by far! Â I've never had anything that I wasn't absolutely pleased with here. Â The shrimp lo mein is the best my husband and I have ever had! Â Since having had the shrimp lo mein at Ru Yi, no other shrimp lo mein tastes good anymore. Â I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Columbus or traveling down I-65 and needing a place to eat. Â They also do very well on take-out orders and always use nice, neat, leak-proof packaging. Â It's worth the drive from Indianapolis to eat here!
Review Source:It was a cause for celebration when this Asian restaurant opened on the west side of Columbus! Â Until Ru Yi, Asian cravings required a long ride for locals. Â I must admit I was a little scared when I first walked into this restaurant and saw the Chinese, Thai, and Japanese fair. Â I was skeptical that they could do a good job with all three cuisines. Â Well, I was wrong to doubt this. Â I've had entrees of all three cuisines and they do a great job with all three. Â My favorites are the hot and sour soup (fantastic!) and the Hunan Beef. Â The sushi is also excellent. Â Carry out is fast and accurate. Â This is a well managed family restaurant. Â It is a great addition to the west side of Columbus and is located close to Interstate 65.
