First, Â great service, they really followed up and helped me with Mother's Day meal for 15 people.
The food was delivered on time and hot, We ordered the following pans of food,
1. Chicken Vesuvio
2. Peppers & Sausage
3. Pork ribs
4. Pasta
5. Â Salad
6. A large variety of deserts
All the food was great, I mean everything!
The last time I dined was in early 2007 and at the time I would dine there quite often and still I wasn't a fan. Â The other day I was looking over older reviews I'd written and wondering about changes since. Â With this in mind I decided that sometime very soon I would revisit Salerno's. Â
So the other night I had some business which took me out to the far NW burbs and on my return I decided to stop in for a bite. Â It was a Sunday night and the place was packed with families leaving only two tables available next to the entrance. Â Not my favorite types of seats being their proximity so close to the door. Â Service was great, multiple runners and waitstaff available to take orders and answer questions. Â In a timely manner refills were poured and by the time the food hit the table and I had some time to start enjoying my meal a more experienced waitress came over and inquired about my feelings about my food and to see if she could get anything extra for me. Â
This time around I ordered the Tetrazini arrabiata and requested it be prepared extra spicy. Â Think juicy, sweet plum tomatoes in a spicy sauce with succulent morsels of white meat chicken. Â E 'stato magnifico! Â The cost didn't break the bank and the entree was served with different styles of baked breads. Â I had about a half portion left over and they offered to package it with the rest of the bread. Â Even gave me instructions on how to warm the bread so that it came out puffy. Â One thing to note; if lactose is a problem one should definitely ask for an ingredient list.
This is a gem of Mount Prospect. Â A family owned and family visited eatery which does well (even though) located in a strip mall.
Great find despite the strip mall location.
Delicious, real Italian food with an attentive wait staff BUT the restaurant atmosphere is not the best... Crowded tables, no wait area, and a busy carry-out service do not make for a relaxing meal.
Meatballs are excellent, all of our portions were huge and the bread is like crack- you can not stop eating it!
Have ordered catering and their lemon chicken was delicious!
One of our favorite restaurants! We love the food and the staff. I have tried just about everything on the menu and I can honestly say that everything is delicious. The food portions are huge and priced right. The staff couldn't be any more accomodating and friendly, Angel and Vickie always make us feel like family. We enjoy the casual dining experience and local feel.
They have daily specials that are always good and worth trying, at a very good price. I highly recommend Salernos for a nice dinner.
I ate at Salernos last night to take advantage of their half priced pizza special. Â I was with a friend, so we also ordered a pasta to share.
The restaurant is in a strip mall and was very crowded with carry-out patronage. Â Eating in the restaurant at one of the few tables, I almost felt in the way. Â It was also very noisy with telephones ringing and orders being placed.
The pasta was good.  HUGE portion!  The bread was dense, but tasty.  I did not  enjoy the deep fried dough they provide with the bread.  I think it needed some seasoning.
The pizza tasted exactly like Red Barron frozen pizza. Â Way too much cheese and sweet sauce with a bland crust. Â I was not very impressed. Â We had a few pieces left and decided to take them home...no use in wasting food. Â To my surprise, upon eating the pizza today, it was amazing! Â This is the first restaurant I have ever eaten at where the pizza was better the next day - not just better, but almost as though it was swapped out for a different pizza. Â I do not like left-overs (I am actually surprised I ate the pizza at all), so for me to actually like this pizza would be incredible, but for me to love it, WOW! Â
I am not sure what this means, as I will not eat here again to just order pizza with a plan of eating the next day.  I will certainly order their pasta again.  I may even try the pizza again to see if maybe my taste buds were just off - worst case scenerio I can  take it home and eat it later. Â
Overall, I would recommend giving this restaurant a shot. Â It is reasonably priced, homemade, and offers delivery - which I will probably try next time around.
This place is great! Â Co-workers and I drive nearly half an hour to have lunch there (the boss lets us have a long lunch). Â Every day they have specials, $4 spaghetti, $3 pizza. Â Everything I've had there is good (except the lemon marscapone cake... tasted like a foot). Â A friend has also used their catering service, which was just as delicious!
Review Source:Discovered this little gem in a strip mall -- now it's our favorite spot to go for a casual meal. Â Priices are reasonable (low, even!), and we haven't been disappointed in an entree yet. Â I think they have the best Chicken Marsala I've ever had. Â Also yummy is the Chicken Dorato (breaded chicken marsala!), Chicken Spezzatini and my husband's favorite, Eggplant Parmesian. He also loves the Italian Ice for dessert. Â Very small seating area, but I think it's cozy with the kitchy italian lights! Â Small beer and wine menu, but it's really more an eating spot than a lounge. AND sometimes there's a coupon in the neighborhood fliers! Â Oh -- and the popover dinner rolls rock! Â Great little neighborhood restaurant! Oh -- and they catered several luncheons at my job -- that was good too!
Review Source:I still don't like Salerno's pizza (it sells, some people like it) but as an Italian restaurant, It's good. The cheese ravioli is good since It's homemade, with soft pasta, a creamy interior, and a perfectly sweet tomato sauce. I ordered a sandwich once; I chose panini bread, which turned out to be pretty close to just a pizza bianca, and I topped it with Mortadella (which was the good kind with pistachios), hot capicola (also the good kind), provolone cheese, black olives, and giardiniera peppers, making for a satisfying sandwich. The bowtie pasta with vodka sauce is also very good, and the meatballs...they're moist and monstrous. I am starting to like Salerno's more and more, but it just never really gets me.
Review Source:Been here several times and have had a really good experience. I'm not a huge fan of the pizza the crust is too. Crispy for my liking but my parents love it and they have 1/2 price pizza on monday's. I go there for the other italian fare. We order a lot from the for delivery for work and the food always tastes great. Â I get Pollo panini and it is by far the most flavorful sandwich ever. I have had the meatballs but i think they are too big and get dry. The chicken florentine had really good flavor but way too much spinach it was hard to find the pasta. The portions are humungous and i always have leftovers. The prices are great. The thing that i love the most is the chicken parm. It amazing! Huge piece of chicken with a ton of mozzarella melted on top. I want some just thinking about it. Got the sandwich for $6.25!! It was huge. And dont forget to ge the fried dough u get it in the bread basket it u eat there or with a salad but if u ask for it to go they will throw in a few. The salads are huge and whatever it comes with u get a ton of and the dressings are really good. Overall one of my fave italian places around the northern suburbs!
Review Source:Pros: Â Decent prices
   Good food
   Huge bread basket
   Huge selection
   Wonderful soups
   Homemade deserts
   Good specials
Enormous portions (one meal can last a person two to three days of leftovers)
Cons: Â The most uncomfortable atmosphere, and difficult seating. Â Some seating is directly by the window, so if it's a cold
day, you'll freeze. Â It's also very hot in there during the summmer. Â Very small restaurant. Â I wish they would expand.
The service is very spotty. Â I prefer going at lunchtime and placing my own order. Â At night, when its busy, the servers do
not help each other out, and if you're not at the right server's table, it will sometimes take forever to place an order. I had to wave down a
server on multiple occasions, and the ones that aren't busy will not wait on you if you're not at their table, and they'll stand
around like, "don't bother me" even if they see you waiving at them. Â Some servers seem just miserable. Â However, if you get a good server,
the service is decent. Â I will say that there is one lady that works there with an accent, and she's very nice (I don't know her name), helpful, and full of energy. Â Â
It gets too crowded in there when people come in to wait for their food. Â Go at non meal hours otherwise, it's a confused mess there. Â
Some meals are dripping in way too much sauce and buttery fat. Â It's not a place to eat on a diet. Too many temptations!! Â Not sure if that's a con though. :-)
Fantastic food, excellent prices!
This was my first time at Salerno's after hearing people rave about it. If you go on a weekend make reservations, but they don't take them for parties under six, so go with friends.
From the moment we sat down the service was excellent. The bread basket was refreshed quickly while the waitress handled a table full of questions and difficult orders. The minestrone soup was excellent, big chunks of veggies in a hearty broth. The chicken vesuvio was swimming in a pool of garlic infused broth with a side of pasta that could have been an entree itself.
This is what a good Italian restaurant should be in the suburbs, not a mega-chain with endless breadsticks and wilted salad.
Have not had the pizza yet. It has been highly recommended to me though. I went with my parents on Sunday & wow it does crowd up FAST!!!
My entree Fruta Di mare was outstanding. I sampled my parent's entrees and was blown away by the care, preparation, and complex flavors achieved. Prices waaay below others....................a tour de force.
I should just shut up and keep this secret to myself!!!!
This review is about the catering only... Â
My office has ordered from this place a few times and the food has always been tasty. Â In fact the meatballs were amazing. Â Everything looked so fresh and was so tasty going down... Â The problem was when it came back up! Â About 85% of the people in my office was sick after eating this lunch. Â I know that sometimes things can happen and you never really know... Â but just be cautious eating here. Â Sadly, I will never eat here again... Â Damn! Â Those were some good meatballs too...
Hidden gem located in a strip mall. Â My co-worker recommended our department try this place & everyone at the table was impressed with the food & their very generous portions. Â Warning: Â Because the place is small & offers great food, it gets packed at busy/serving times. Â Also, no one should compare this w/ the Michael Salerno restaurant in Vernon Hills IL. Â Go to this place in Mt Prospect IL instead, & enjoy their food!
Review Source:Awesome place for large portions of really good food. Can't go wrong , nothing pretentious just yummy. Know the owner , he's been in the restaurant biz. For probably,30 years ,knows how to run a restaurant, not so easy sometimes. Great food , good prices, what else do you want.
Bob. Northbrook il.
Salerno's has become my new favorite place to go. I live really nearby so I'm surprised it took me this long to find out this place existed.
I came here for the first time last week. I had the spinach and sausage thin crust and it was delicious! I also had a side of spaghetti for $3.95. The side portion is huge and good enough as a meal portion itself. Absolutely LOVE the breadsticks here.
The second time we came back, kept it simple and had a side salad for $3.50 and thin crust pizza. Yummy.
I am definitely going to become a regular here.
I have been coming here for a while, but I always order the same thing. The pasta carbonara with minestrone soup. The pasta is good- I have had better- but I see Salerno's as more of a quick and easy place. A restaurant with simple food and decor... without all of the frill. I usually end up taking a majority of the pasta home because the portions are large and I often fill up on this delicious fried and salty bread they have. I have also tried the pizza with is good as well. The service is prompt and friendly.
Review Source:I've never had a bad experience at Salerno's. Being a veggie, I love their Eggplant Parmesan sandwich. It's delicious, not over greasy, and the fries are salty and yummy too. Â My last visit I had to force myself to try something new, and boy, I'm glad I did. The gnocchi that was on special was delicious!
I also really like their pizzas. First, I'm happy to find a pizza place that slices their pizza in wedges. I like the crunchy crust on each piece. Their regular pizzas are half off on Mondays (who doesn't need a half price pizza on Monday?). Â For their specialty pizzas, you can't go wrong with the Pizza a la France (mushrooms, basil and goat cheese for the win!).
Beware Salerno's can get crowded for dinner, but it's worth the wait (the bread is yummy). Or call ahead and take it home with you.
The place that occupies this restaurant has gone through many different transformations, from a Thai Restaurant to a small Asian Buffet place, and some other kind of restaurants in between.  After a year or two, the place would go out of business and another would pop up.  This is not the case since Salernos Italian Restaurant took over this space.  There has never been more people showing up to this place for lunch  and dinner in the past few years since they set up business in this small shopping plaza.  This place is a small mom and pop business, and they have other small type Italian eateries located in and around the city. Â
At lunch time, you can expect to see a large crowd and the tables are always full. Â At lunch time, you can order your food at the register and pick it up at the counter when it is ready....nothing fancy, just good affordable food.
Their lunch prices are only $6.50 and the portions are huge !!! the same way your Italian grandmother used to serve. Â On Mondays, the pizzas are half off (to eat in or take out)
My coworkers and I are usually here once a week, and we would always split their entrée salad since it is too big for one person, and mind you, my coworker is a hefty 200 plus Italian guy.  We'd also supplement our salad with one of their lunch specials and we split that as well, but most of the time we end up taking home the rest of the food.  One of their popular dishes is their sphaghetti in marina sauce for only $3.75.  Once in a while, they will serve an 8oz Prime rib for lunch and sometimes a half slab BBQ ribs with fries for lunch time....all very very good.  They are always changing the Lunch menus, so you never know what the special is until you get there or call them, but everything I have had from here has always been very good. Â
Most of the staff is very friendly except for one or two of the people that take your order. Â These two girls in particular never smile and always have a dreary look when you place an order, but other then that, I love coming here for the food.
Sometimes you just want plain old pizza - do you know what I mean? Â You don't want corporate pizza -and- you don't want some magnificent stuffed pizza pie... you want something in the middle. Â That's what they do at Salerno's - it's good enough to be better than Pizza Hut. Â I know that sounds like an insult [I know it does], but the pizza is actually pretty good.
Review Source:This place is a lunch staple for my coworker and I. It's close to work, the food is great and the portions are huge!
Okay, so it's not the nicest looking place. But I'm so glad I didn't let that deter me, because judging by the crowds of business lunchers that cram into this tiny restaurant, the food is wonderful. But you better get there by 11, because otherwise you're in for a bit of a wait. Â
Yes, the enterees can be pricey. But if you're lucky enough to have a lunch buddy like me, split it! The portions are enough to share, and if you ask the cashier to split it right when you order, you won't have to ask for extra bread for your dining companion (although we end up doing that anyway beause of the parm and olive oil concotion that we mix up at our table).
Always look at the specials. My favorite dish, the chicken spezzatini was a daily special discovery. And the specials are always cheap. I mean $3.50 for a full plate of spaghetti and meatballs and a piece of bread cheap.
I've never had any of the paninis or the pizzas, just the pasta and the occassional chicken over spinach sauteed in garlic (which is also heavenly, by the way).
Highlight - the daily specials, the pasta and the spinach
Lowlight - hard to get a seat sometimes and depending on what time you arrive, you might wait a bit for your entree.
Casual almost to the point of fast food so great for taking the guys from lunch out and a few business dinners I didn't want to drink with. Every day there is a lunch deal that will blow you away, nothing on the menu is bad. Only thing is, I order most of my sandwiches on regular italian bread since I don't like paninis.
I rated it as 'cheap' because the daily special is normally right under or above $10... though you can make a $15 meal if you want.
When Rossinis closed in Niles I thought my days of sausage and peppers along with garlic broccolli were gone for ever, but I have come to find out that these folks are the same owners as Rossinis. My Mom and myself have gotten catering from them for years. Salernos is the same good food and quality. I recently ordered the above favs along with the Lemon Chicken, it was great! I have not eaten in the restaurant but I might stop there for lunch. It's not my kind of place for dinner. Typical pizza place atmosphere, and seat yourself. I will be back again and again for the catering part. I also got a phone call from them a few days after my order to see how I liked everything. Nice! So I have to drive futher but it's worth it!
Review Source:The prices have gone quite a good amount up since I started coming here. Â The only other real problem I have is that some of their food is reaaaaaally greasy. Â I'm talking about lakes of grease in your pizza and at the bottom of your pasta dishes. Â Their Panini's and sandwiches surprised me though; they're pretty good.
I do however love cheese and Salerno's doesn't hold back on that. Â Their workers have been very pleasant to me and I've done pickup, delivery, catering, and eat-in and have always had a pleasant experience (even when they messed up my catering order once, they were still awesome about it).
I work down the street from this place and the combination of low prices, great food, and fast service make Salerno's a regular choice for a lunch out. Â Prices are low across the board and their daily specials are even cheaper. Â I generally stick with the special slice (~$3) or the spaghetti special ($4) which always please. Â Otherwise they have plenty of other unique paninis, subs, and pasta dishes that are always fresh made and plenty to fill me up with some leftovers for later (the fresh baked italian bread on the side doesn't hurt either).
Review Source:Very decent southern Italian food in the culinary wasteland of the northwest suburbs. Thin crust pizza is the signature here, but extensive menu offerings include many pasta and chicken dishes. Chicken Marsala offers 3 boneless breasts in a mushroom wine sauce with a pasta side. Great stuffed shells oozing with ricotta cheese and topped with meat sauce are most satisfying with enough for tomorrow's lunch. Too bad diners cannot top off a meal with a good coffee as none is offered. Service is ok but lingering is frowned upon.
Review Source:This place is a pretty good option for pizza in the northwest burbs. I've only had the thin crust- the regular kind of looks like a huge sheet of french bread pizza, and even the thin is thicker than a typical Chicago-style thin crust. But it is damn tasty. The pepperoni is very good, and the kitchen folks do a pleasantly bad job of separating the individual pepperoni slices when they're distributing it across the pizza. The sausage, though, is outstanding, and according to the menu, homemade.
If you're dining in, this place gets pretty crowded, but service is good, the bread basket is great (fried pizza dough!), and there's cheap Moretti if you're so inclined. Finish your meal with a cannoli or some tiramisu. They're both good, and I think my mom has a bit of an addiction to the former.
ALSO- fans of The Soup (or Maury, I suppose), might be happy to know that this place also does a nice version of Chicken Tetrazzini, in case you're trying to steal someone's man. Or even if you just like creamy mushroom sauces.
This is a very nice family type place. Â The menu is extensive. Â The prices are more than reasonable and actually pretty cheap considering the portions they give.
I tried their Rotini Salerno which I thought was ok. My  FIL law had the Giambotta which was tasty (chicken/sausage/potatoes/peas/red peppers/brown gravy/onions)  but I thought it could use a little more seasoning
Chicken Vesuvio was very good
Fries were excellent
Pizza was very tasty
The place is a little small so if you get there in the middle of the rush you will wait. Â If you get seated before the rush it does seem like people are lurking over you as they really have nowhere to go but to stand over you.
Either way this is a great plave to go and we will definitely be back.
This is my favorite Italian restaurant in the area so far. Â The pasta dishes are delicious. Â Even the marinara sauce on my son's noodles had a variety of flavor levels and made me want a bowl of my own. Â The pizza is so good that my parents ate here with us once and the next time I drove 4 hours to see them they asked me to pick up a pizza for them. Â For pizza feeding four adults, pasta for a child and a ton of leftovers, our bill was 30 dollars. The bread they give you when you sit down is also delicious and soft and I am always disappointed when it is gone. Â I love this place.
Review Source:i have no idea how they can afford to serve such fresh, delicious, authentic italian food so cheaply without going out of buisness.
i had a cream of mushroom soup here that was actually a thick brown puree and broth of artesian mushrooms, instead of the gluey paste most restaurants serve. i had an insalata caprese, about par with fresh italian bistros like pizza metro on division near damen (it could have used more basil), but the kicker was some assorted garbage salad i had with palm hearts and mozzerella on a bed of greens. the house dressing is a wonderful blend of balsamic and spices. i do not miss an opportunity to eat here when i am working nearby.
i wish they delivered to the north side of chicago.
Wow is all I have to say. My sister brought home a bunch of food from here and it is delicious. I had one of their paninis and it was to die for. The pasta was soooooo good and the pizza was even better. The fries were crispy and soft too. Â It's dfferent than alot of other pizzerias. Â They have good prices from what I saw on the menu.
Review Source:- very casual eatery in a strip mall, was packed on a Friday night - seems like a local place with regulars. Â
The service was friendly.
We ordered a thin pizza with canadian bacon, mushrooms, peppers and onions - and there was wayyy too much cheese on it - very American style.
We'll give it another try - I was hoping for a little more authentic Italian style pizza -
The food here is worth 5 stars...for a quick lunch they have the best slices for just @ $3 and the french fries here are to DIE FOR!!!!
fresh cut with the skin on them and a meal in themselves as you get a whole styrofoam container of them,
Love their sandwhiches and paninis, and the chicken salad sandwhich is great to share with a hungry friend or is enough to provide the perfect late night leftover meal with leftover fries, because even cold the fries are still tasty;)
Entrees are solid crowd pleasers as my fellow workers always seem to go into deep grubbing no talking mode whenever the delivery comes through..
And as far as Customer Service...They are classy and top notch..after having missed a piece of a HUGE order, they would run back with extras and a replacement order without hesitation and even faster the second time....
you can tell they aim to please.
The only reason I didn't give a fifth star is the sporadic counter help during off hours, when sometimes I don't know if anyone is around, or they just are too tired to deal with faces. oh well...
anyways this place has GOOD Eatins! :)
If you need a caterer in the Northwest Suburbs I highly recommend Salerno's Pizzeria. Â They don't just make pizza - they have great Italian chicken dishes and lasagnas and can fully cater an event. Â I had never eaten there, but in July my sister used them to cater a baby shower she threw for me at The Grove. Â
The food was great! Â The Chicken al Limone was absolutely delicious! Â Wonderfully tender chicken breasts in a light, yet tangy lemon sauce. Â The broccoli was actually bright green and still crisp- not that dull, overcooked green mush that other caterers might give you. Â The Caesar salad and oven roasted potatoes were great too. Â
There was tons of food left over (even though we ordered for the number of people that had RSVP'd) because their portions are enormous. Â We didn't mind because we got to take leftovers home...but if you don't want left overs I'd suggest ordered for about 20% less heads than you really are expecting.
I don't remember the price, but I do remember it was significantly less than most other places we got menus from. Â We like it so much that a few months ago we used them to cater a surprise party. Â The people who handled our order were great!
I highly recommend them if you're having a party out in the Northwest Suburbs (though I do believe they'd be willing to deliver to Chicago).
This place is the one of the best kept secrets in the Northwest suburbs. Â The partners here have a history of great Italian restaurants, Â Salerno's Pizzeria, Rossinis, Spazios, Armandos, and Sassis. Â My special treat is their specialty, PIZZA SORRENTO with red and yellow roasted peppers, roasted eggplant, fresh mozzarella, and basil. Thin & crispy & very authentic. Â We usually have it delivered & have used their catering services as well. Â It's also a casual spot to dine, where you can BYOB.
