This place has gone down hill! Â We have been regulars - at least once a week - and will no longer go back. Â Food is nothing great - pasta from the freezer, no flavor in anything. Â Pizza is horrible - soggy crust, undercooked (cheese not melted), and the tiramisu is NEVER fresh. Â Not worth the money you will waste!!
Review Source:This review may seem harsh but c'mon Sal ! Â Went there over the weekend:
- Bread served now is mush, like wonder bread
- Calamari has been changed to the frozen 'rings'
- Glass of house wine is $5.50, contrast to 75 cents a glass wholesale
- My bread plate had 4, count 'em, 4 chips out of it. Â One chip means throw it out because it cannot be sterilized.
- If you want a booth as we did, and they have the back booths closed off, or if a booth isn't up next in their server rotation, they will not give you an effing booth.
- As others mentioned the food is bland and the kitchen can be amazingly slow.
The NEW atmosphere is a vast improvement but we are paying for it !!
The service and food --- wonderful !!! Â The prices, not so much. Â
Welcoming and friendly will be the way the serving staff greet you and continue to care for you throughout your meal. Â They make sure you have plenty of the fresh baked bread and you never have to ask for a refill of any beverage....very attentive.
The menu is a good mix of the Italian flair and the food is good !!! Â If children are along the menu for them is actually good too. Â I would say smaller cups for the kiddies would be an enhancement, those big ones just don't fit little hands.
The wine menu isn't too bad but I would like to see more choices if you wanted to order by the glass. Â For a good glass of wine you must invest in a bottle.
The "old" place was closed off and you felt crowded....the new place is open and plenty of booth space....but the price of the meals reflects the new construction cost. Â It is a hometown place and I promote those type of places, but eating at Olive Garden is less expensive and honestly the breadsticks are better. Â (stick with the home baked bread, and it's free)
I will go back.  I didn't try the pizza and when you walk in and see the fire raging in the fire oven where the pizza is baked  makes the need to experience it something you will want to try....
Overall, I like the place.....just wish the prices were a little less.
I am generally skeptical about ethnic restaurants in small places, particularly in the Midwest, so I expected another Papa Joe (Avon) experience (which was horrible). However, this time the food was really good. I had bruscetta, minestrone, veal pizzaiola, and spumoni. Everything was good, but the veal pizzaoila (with spaghetti) was exception. In fact, I was in Florence two weeks ago, and this could easily hold its own with some of the dishes I ate there. While Sal's isn't cheap, compared to Donato's or Pizza Hut, it is very affordable for the quality it provides. An absolute gem!
Review Source:This is the best Italian food on Indy's Westside. But as others have stated, it's no longer worth the prices.
As they have gotten more popular the prices have crept up until it is no longer a good deal to eat here. Our family of 5 cost $75 with tip, and that was without desserts or alcohol.
The new renovation is gorgeous but noisy (there are no interior walls so it echoes like a cave.) The staff seem overworked and under-trained, but are trying their best.
So yes, a solid restaurant but be prepared to pay.
