Thankfully it stated pouring down on my way home. Raining so hard I had to find cover in the only open place close by - Sangillo's. A hole in the wall, a dive, a fun straight up yuppie killer of a place. Numerous beers on draft and in the bottle. Great jukebox. Superb banter with the locals. Non-social, conformists stay away.

I loved this place!  What a great dive bar!  Randomly strolled in here while waiting out a rain storm before a concert at ferry terminal.  Two girls from Boston walk in, all regular patrons turn around and give us the "who the hell are you" looks before turning around and continuing to imbibe.  The bartender was quite nice to us.  In addition to the standard Bud Light, Coors, Miller, they also paid homage to Maine breweries with Geary's and Shipyard.  Interestingly, if you are up for it - jello shots are $1.50 a piece.  The juke box was playing good ol' rock and roll (lots of Johnny Cash and southern rock).  If you are hungry there is an extremely limited food menu - though everything comes with chips (they proudly advertise that fact).  Egg rolls, hot pockets, and corn dogs are the available fare.  Did not eat while we were there.

After a great dinner at Andy's, at closing time, the bartender (who shall remain nameless, largely because she did not favor us with her name) recommended that we head over to Sangillo's, her favorite dive bar in Old Port.

Let me tell you friends, this place did not disappoint.  Being in Portland for our anniversary, we had nowhere to go, all day to get there, and plenty to keep us busy, so drinks were the order of the day.  Over a game of yahtzee at the table next to the jukebox, we drank $3.50 Shipyard Exports and the proprietress interrupted us politely to offer us free jello shots!

Nobody got P.O.'d when I played "One Bourbon, One Shot, One Beer" on the jukebox, and I got to listen to two guys argue about the merits of playing prog-rock at a bar.  All around I say we win.

As long as you remember that Sangillo's is classified on Yelp as a DIVE BAR, you'll be a-okay.

Awesome "I couldn't care less what you think" staff and jello shots... Heavy heavy pours on the drinks and some great people watching.

Sangillos; where the bartenders hair is high, the jukebox rocks, and the jell-o shots are cheap. I've been loving this bar for years, and even though it's lost some of it's charm ( no more Adam Sangillo convincing you to stay all day with rounds on the house :( and new staff members under the age of 50) it's still pretty swell. Only bar in Portland sketchy enough for a random dog to wander through, but not so sketchy that I wouldn't go alone. Oh, AND they often serve pickled kielbasa. Flip yeah.

This place is the shit! I used to live within stumbling distance and frequented this place probably way too much. Great bartenders and they have a drink special everyday. No taps, bottled & canned beer and some of the strongest mixed drinks in town. I've seen people order mixed drinks and leave them alone after about 2 sips. Jello shots for $1.50 if that's your steez. Frequented by a ton of regulars but I see some new faces in there occasionally. The bartender Andrea is my favorite and she always is great for casual conversation. It's the type of place that you have to go out of your way to find and that's cool with me. The hipsters have already overrun every other dive bar in town. If I see another dude with a chain wallet or a carabiner holding his keys wearing girls jeans I just might give up hope. Hail Sangillo's for real!

Oh sangie's you truly are a gem of Portland. This is my favorite dive bar in all of Portland. First of all, the drinks are DIRT cheap and are so strong that they could take the paint off of the wall. Let me site an example. I order a shot and its not in the wussy shot glass that they give you at other bars in the city, its in a rocks glass! Big enough to split with a friend! Also, the regulars here are amazing and fun to talk to. One time a nice older lady gave me her awesome vintage rhinestone bracelet right off of her wrist!  The jello shots here are also poured like you are old friends, try the Rum ones, they are good too. The bartenders are also part of what makes Sangillos so great too. Cheers to Sangies!

Sangillo's is one of my favorite small bars in the history of the world and with plenty of good reasons. It is a family owned bar that has been in the same family for years and years. The previous owner recently passed away last year, but the bar is still alive and doing well.

It is a very small place with many regulars, but it is also very friendly to new folks who come wandering in. They have a good jukebox and a TV so that one might watch the Red Sox game or a soap opera depending on the time of day. The staff is nice if you're nice and they know how to pour a mean ole' stiff drink. No beer on tap, but plenty of bottles and cans. They have no parking lot, but if it is outside of banking hours you can park at the bank next door and then the meter maids can't fuck with you! They open up at some crazy hour like 9 in the morning or something and you cannot smoke inside. Silly Maine with it's silly little Maine laws. Let me get this straight? I can't drink at the bar past 1 am, but come back at 9 am and its okay? Ooooookay. Me and my friends have spent many times in here over the years. Either partying like crazy persons or alone reading in the corner. It's all good.

Anyway, if you're in the area, hit this place up if you want to get drinkee. HOORAY FOR SANGILLO'S!!!
