Please don't plan on meeting 20 friends here on a Friday night....this place is great fun, but you're probably not going to find seating together, or at the bar, or by the pool tables. Â That said, if you and a couple friends want to come by, it's perfect. Â Chuck Berries and Irish Nachos for everyone. Â
This place is cool and fun and the burgers are allegedly amazing - I've just always been here after dinner. Â Great service and a good selection of food and drink. Â And the poster in the bathroom is the best.
Definitely the best bar in Muncie, maybe the best in Indiana (at least among those I've been to). Excellent beer selection, which I know nothing about, so when I'm in town I get shitfaced hammered until I find one I like and then stick with it throughout my visit. The biscuits and gravy are so good you'll want to slap and shake the cook until he cries, simply because you won't know what else to do with yourself. Savages does get pretty crowded, so service can be tough for the sweet, sweet staff. They're working as fast as they can, you impatient, entitled pricks. It's not the damn French Laundry.
P.S. - One of the CLEANEST bars I've ever been in.
P.P.S. - They have dry erase boards in the bathrooms so you can draw/write nice things that won't bum anyone out.
P.P.P.S - Savages is cheap, tip generously.
We are back. Â This time, we took our oldest son. Â He was amazed at the prices. Â He is living in Chicago these days and he said the same things in the Lincoln/Logan Square neighborhoods would be at least three times as much. Â Tonight, I tried the french fried pickles. Â Very good and about half the price another restaurant in the BSU Village area. Â We ordered the Muncie Melt, Fish and Chips, and Sloppy Joe. Â Other than the Sloppy joe being cold, we were quite happy. Â The "joe" got fixed pronto by the addition of a few microwaves. Â At 8 pm, on a Thursday, there was no place to sit, or even to wait. Â Luckily, a table of friends was just getting ready to leave when we arrived. Â
Still more things to try on the menu.........
I give two stars, but only out of benevolence because the breaded tenderloin was somewhat good. Here's the issues with my visit: 1. There was only one waitress when we were there, so the service sucked. 2. The fried pickles were fried until they were hard. (That might have been why it took over 35 minutes to get the food--to get the pickles that hard has to take a great deal of time.) 3. The food took so long to come out of the kitchen that I would have liked to had my iced tea filled up after it ran dry--it seems reasonable that it could be filled since the waitress was filling the drink request right next to us several times. Rather disappointing for our first visit... and last.
Review Source:Savage's is the best place downtown. Ever.
They keep getting better and better: new lunch hours, new expanded/renovated facility, more bar space, tons of beers (bottles and on tap), and an expansive food menu! Vegetarians like me are usually SOL when it comes to bar food, but my god if Savage's doesn't have THE best black bean burger in town. Possibly in the world. Food is always hot and tasty, beer is cold and delicious. I don't think I've ever left Savage's with anything less than a too-full stomach.
Everyone who works there is awesome. Everyone. Bartenders are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. The atmosphere is loud, but that's what makes it great! Always busy, clearly a beloved spot in Muncie. It's definitely close to MY heart.
Savage's is a great dive with a huge selection of beer. They have a wide variety of food, all delicious and at a great price.
Wait staff can be a bit lacking at times, but it's worth the wait. The barkeep was great though and very knowledgeable about what they offered.
The atmosphere is great, very comfortable. One TV at the end of the bar, muted, with music playing in the background. Usually filled with hipsters and on the quieter side so you don't have to yell across the table. I will definitely be back!
I'll join the bandwagon... Savage's is awesome. It's small, unpretentious, has a ton of selection beer-wise, and THEY SERVE SCHOOL PIZZA. Yes, the rectangular cheese stuff we all remember from our elementary days... and it's $1.50 a slice. Blew my mind. I haven't had that since... wow, was it really 1992?
Anyway, my husband was also really impressed with the jalapeno bleu cheese burger. And I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband was thrilled they had two of his favorites available in bottles... Founder's Breakfast Stout and North Coast's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout.
The service was pretty quick, although we did wait awhile for our check... and it wasn't really a check; just the server telling us that it was $22. That seemed about right, so we took her word for it.
Lots of hipsters, but they were quiet, Scrabble-playing, PBR-sipping hipsters.
I'll definitely be back... for the atmosphere, the prices and of course, the pizza.
Savage's Ale House  is a great little pub. Full of hundreds of options to suit your brew taste ... it's independently owned and operated and for the size of the place, they sure crank out fantastic food.
I've been to Savage's many times. Never a disappointment. Joel Savage aims to please and goes beyond the extra mile to do so.
I recently sent Joel a note via facebook indicating that I'd love to see him carry Kronenbourg 1664 - a French ale that I enjoy ... and in less than two weeks, Joel sent me a private message that they now have it in stock and waiting for me.
Customer service is something Savage's holds in high regard and they deliver flawlessly.
The most recent food item I had was the grilled tenderloin sandwich. It's BY FAR the best around. Thick, flavorful and piping hot when it reaches the table. My favorite sinful pleasure ... the crinkle cut fries. No place in town has them like Savage's serves. Golden brown, crunchy and very hot! These aren't greasy bar fries ... they're perfectly prepared ... and the flavor is amazing.
The best deal on their menu -- Biscuits and Gravy .. homemade!! Â for $2! A very healthy 2 biscuit portion smothered in sausage gravy with incredible flavor. There's nothing you can order anywhere else for $2 anywhere around and feel you just ate food prepared by your grandmother. Seriously, this is a phenomenal deal and fantastic dish.
The atmosphere at Savage's is like an old style pub. No frills other than the large flat screen at one end of the establishment, typically muted and music playing from what always seems like vinyl which is great!
Joel and his team at Savage's never fail to please ... excellent food from a very extensive menu and wide range of brews - import, draft, etc.
LOVE this place. They've got a great selection of pub food at ridiculously cheap prices, and a modest but quality selection of beers on tap, usually from regional breweries. The venue is kept clean, and there's a warm, laid-back vibe to the place. Good for dinner, and good in the evening. Crowd is never rowdy, always chill.
Review Source:Amazing selection of beers. A small but good selection of stuff on tap, most of it is local/regional: Three Floyds, Upland, etc. They always have PBR on tap, which is fine with me.
Just about anything else you could ever want is in a bottles. Everything from retro-beers to Chimay Grand Reserve.
Food is excellent. Selection of food is likewise. Everything from greasy pub burgers and fried sides to pita wedges and hummus. Order a Muncie Burger (trust me).
The vibe is great. Classy, down-to-earth place. Most of the too-ironic-to-be-taken-seriously hipsters hang out at Be Here Now in the Village drinking Boxer, listening to crappy music, and getting their palms read or something.
Wait staff and barkeeps can occasionally be a bit sparse, but that's infrequently been my experience. Despite that, they are always very knowledgeable and helpful.
It can get crowded and loud sometimes, but people will usually make room for you. There is also a pool table, which is nice. Sports that you'd usually have to watch at home (soccer, rugby, etc.) usually get play-time on the tv, which is also nice.
Visiting my friend in Muncie, she tells me we must come here for late night eats. Wha? Ranch on everything? When it's 2:30am, this is all I want to hear.
Irish nachos: fries covered in nacho cheese, ranch, and bacon (I think).
Quesadilla: yum! there is a lot of quesadilla in one order; I took it home and ate it for breakfast the next day.
Muncie Burger: burger with cheese, bacon, ranch, and some other things.
Beer: for someone who lives in Chicago, the multiple pulls of Three Floyd's are magical.
I was in town for two nights, and we came here twice. Crowd is not obnoxious. Bartenders are cool. Lots of fixies out front make it feel like Chicago. SCORE!
This bar is a true delight. There's nothing better than going there on a Thursday night when you should be studying and ordering some Beercrastination on tap.
The drinks are cheap and plentiful, the new barstools are way nicer, and it's just a comfortable place to be for anyone. You're not going to meet your average village bar meat head at this fine establishment.
It has a protective aura about it that beckons douchbags and  scorpion women to stay away. Food is sooo good too!
Goddamn it, I shoulda had the first review. Â Excellent hole in the wall bar with something for everybody, with the caveat that everybody doesn't want liquor.
One can select from around 8 draught selections and probably 60 craft, import, and oddball beers (yes Virginia, there is a Hamm's in a can).  You can get a mug of PBR anytime for a measly  buck, then bang your tankard on the bar until it's been refilled. Â
No culinarians hold court here, but the biscuits and gravy are made daily (served all night) and the tenderloin, albeit not the traditional cracker crumb variety, is quite tasty and well worth a try. Â Nothing fancy, but delicious and affordable. Â
The atmosphere is great - there's more Pabst breweriana than I've seen in years and where else can one hear Turbonegro and the Stooges flirting between Weezer and Guided by Voices? Â In Muncie, anyway....
The bathrooms are spotless and have locks! Â The lack of a rail at the bar and the somewhat sucky stools somewhat suck, but hardly enough to take away from the overall enjoyment. Â
Good for what ales ya!
This bar is a brand new addition to downtown Muncie, and it's already a hot spot for young and old alike! Ok so I know it says not to review if you know the owners, but it's Muncie! Everyone knows everyone here! So anyway back to my review. I came back to my old college town just to visit this bar, and boy was I glad I did! It has a great homey feel to it when you walk in, and the music gets you in the mood to talk with others and enjoy your drink. There's a pool table in the front room! They offer a bike rack and parking lot for everyone's convenience.
Now on to the food and drinks. There are many different craft beers on draft and in the bottle. I think they are eventually going to serve hard alcohol, but beer and wine is good enough for me! They serve food until 2am! I'm pretty sure this is the latest you can get food downtown. And a lot of their food is very creative and unique. For example, they had a bacon jalapeno bleu cheese burger one night, and a hawaiian toasted sandwich with bbq, pineapple, ham and swiss! yummmy! This sounds like more than just bar food to me! And you can get fries, onion rings, or a SOFT PRETZEL as a side. crazy!! crazy good!!
As for the prices, they are awesome! You can't beat $1 pbr and other cheap selections. It's really worth checking out if you're ever visiting Muncie, not just for the drinks, but the food as well. I will always be going here when I'm in town, that's for sure!
