Well, i love this place because it is so close to home. I really want it to excel. The food is ok, nothing to rave about, but with a few tweaks it could be really good. The bar is nice and has a great selection of beers. I'll return because it's in the neighborhood, but they need to do some quality control on the food.
Review Source:Great addition to the Silver Spring dining scene. I wasn't blown away by my entree, but they were solid and the appetizers were wonderful! Not much of a wait on a Saturday evening, but they can still do a lot in terms of signage, and foot traffic should pick up once the other ground floor retail in that area gets going. Possibly the best beer list in a restaurant in all of Silver Spring (Quarry House is a bar).
Review Source:I have been here for happy hours on many occasions. Matt, the bartender, is an amazing and helpful individual. He knows his stuff and is genuinely interested in ensuring your experience at the bar is top notch. His service alone is 5 stars. Other things to note about the bar include free samples of any beer, happy hour, and a constantly rotating tap list. The bar is a great place to sit.
Being a new place, I find that food can be either a hit or mediocre. The turkey meatloaf and the pork chop are to die for. Their inability to cook the Scion Burger or Filet au Poivre medium is a significant fault. That said, I find the food generally great and have no qualms with it. Definitely, the best thing I have had there is the Turkey Meatloaf. The flavor they get into that meatloaf is simply impressive.
Close to the metro, classy, and tasty, this is a great addition to Silver Spring.
I live across the street, so I have visited Scion a few times since they have opened this location. Â Their food is pretty good, but their happy hour deals are great. Â There aren't many good happy hours places in Silver Spring, so this is a much needed service. Â
They have a rotating beer selection on tap, which is fun. Â The burger they serve for half price burger night is delicious, though it is kind of disappointing that they only have one option, and no veggie/black bean/meatless option. Â They call their fries "garlic fries", though they aren't really and are kind of a let down (these are the only food item that has been a let down so far).
The service is really hit or miss. Â All of the servers have been friendly, but they have ranged from excellent, to being too attentive and getting orders wrong. Â I will chalk that up to them ironing out the details and the staff. Â One place that they have nailed it: all of the bartenders are great! Â
From talking with staff, I can tell that they have a lot of plans to expand and improve this business. Â I look forward to seeing what they have in store for the future because I will definitely be returning frequently!
I lived here- so it's easy for me to find and know where and what to do for parking, etc. Scion is tucked away in a corner on East West Highway- which doesn't permit street parking in front, you can park across the street, around the corner on Blair Mill Rd, or at the 1200 East West or Veridian garage. Â This may pose a challenge to some- but it's easy enough, just give them a call. Â It's down the block from the SS metro and a multitude of bus stops. Â
OK, the food and drink.  I went for happy hour on a Tuesday, half price glasses of wine, draft beer, select cocktails, appetizers, and the Scion burger. I had a perfect glass of Cabernet for $5/glass (unheard of)  and  the Scion burger.  Of note, the Scion burger comes one way (I didn't ask for a modification- but I'm sure they would do it)...luckily it's a good way.  The fried pickles on top were delightful and my burger was a perfect medium and extremely flavorful!  The fries were natural cut and perfectly cooked (just too salty for me).  The service is friendly but new, so a lot of forgiveness on my end.  All in all, I will be returning since it's around the corner from me and I believe in supporting my neighborhood!  If you go for happy hour, tip on the full price, it's the respectful thing to do.
I wanted this place to be awesome. Â I think it still can be. Â Hopefully, this review can help the owners get there.
We went on Friday night as a group of 6. Â There were a number of open tables, which kind of surprised me given this is one of the only upper-scale restaurants in Silver Spring. Â I love 8407, but we really need some variety. Â So we're glad you're in the neighborhood!
My first impressions:
-Parking. Â The hostess said they were catering to people in buildings. Â I get that, but we live in Takoma Park and drove. Â Parking sucks (as, frankly, does the location). They said to park at Giant (which we did) and not to worry about it. Â Wondering if they would pay my towing bill, if say, the restaurant actually become popular and they continued to advise people to do that. Â Maybe consider valet. Â If Society Lounge can, certainly, Scion can...
-Location. Â Well maybe it wouldn't suck if people from the gazillion apartment buildings in the area actually came out and spend money in Silver Spring. Â I mean really, where does everyone go in Silver Spring? Â Only so many people can fit in the Quarry House. Â Hopefully Scion is genius and this area will become super walk-able, filled with other ground level bars and shops. Â But in the mean time, not so much.
-The sign. Â It's plastic. Â Buy a real one.
On to the real stuff....
-The food. Â It was actually pretty good. Â We ordered a bunch of stuff. The duck gnocchi was excellent. Â Nice portion of duck, the sauce was tasty and the gnocchi melted in your mouth. Â The lobster mac and cheese need more lobster. Â The ravioli was good.
-The beer and wine selection was good. That's standard these days. Â Craft beer is everywhere. Â You're not going to survive on that.
-The service. Â Not particularity impressed with the wait staff. Â We should have had top notch wait service, especially considering the restaurant was not packed on a Friday night. Â Also, we sat at the back of the restaurant near a service counter. They need to put a screen up, I don't want to see the service counter.
My take away: Â I may come back for happy hour. Â A restaurant like this needs to open with a bang. Â You can make or break folks in the first visit.
First, let me just say that I really wanted to love this place. And I'm sure that had I actually gotten to eat the food I ordered, it would have been delicious, since everything on the menu sounded great and seemed reasonably priced.
However - this place has some serious kinks it needs to work out in terms of service and operations. My husband and I went on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago. It was busy, but we were able to get a table right away without a reservation. About 5-10 minutes passed between the time we were seated and the time our server stopped by our table - a bit long, but understandable given how busy it was. He was very nice, and took our drink and appetizer orders. We then waited 20+ minutes for our drinks - mind you, these were not elaborate cocktails, but bottled beers that only required someone to pop the cap. When our server finally dropped off our drinks, we also ordered two salads.
Fast forward to 40 minutes later. Still waiting on our appetizer and salads, hungry, and watching the table next to us (who ordered way AFTER us) get their food. We asked to speak to the manager, who was very apologetic and explained that our food tickets had been "lost" in the kitchen. She offered to buy us a round of drinks - thanks but no thanks, I'm hungry not thirsty damn it - and we ultimately just ended up leaving and going to Sidebar.
Anyway, I'd be willing to give this place another shot; hopefully after a month or two of being open they'll have all the kinks worked out.
Went here for happy hour last night. Had a great time. Not too packed and pretty good selection of beers on draft. Happy prices were GREAT. Half off all draft beers, rail drinks $4, and certain appetizers for $3 - $5. Overall the food was pretty good for the price but I have yet to try out the entrees. Our server was really friendly and prompt. We even managed to sneak in another round of drinks (with full drinks in hand) with only 3 mins left before happy hour was over. Â I'll definitely be back to try more of the food. I know there's also a location in Dupont but it's nice to know I don't have to go all the way to Dupont to try this restaurant now!
Review Source:We went to Scion with friends on a Saturday evening. The place was busy but not packed. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Our risotto was creamy and veggies cooked just right (the portion modest, so getting an app or salad would be good), the turkey meatloaf tender and flavorful, the bean succotash nicely spicy, and the edamame hummus a nice start with chips. Unfortunately the entrees came out two minutes after the appetizer, so the kitchen needs to work on its timing. Our server forgot one drink and one entree(!); while that's not a 'new restaurant' fault per se, the staffing is still a work in progress. Scion gets four stars primarily on food with deductions for the food timing and the noisiness of the space.
Review Source:Where to start:
The Good:
- Large selection of beers
- The Lava Cake was moist, hot and delicious
- Lemon water is delicious
- Whole staff chips in to serve tables.
The Mediocre:
- I had made reservations, but they couldn't find us in the system. On the upside they got us seated quickly.
- The server was nice, but she forgot my fiance's soda, but apologized twice for taking time to repour my beer since it had too much "foam".
- I asked for my Scion burger "as rare as allowed out of the kitchen" It arrived medium well, but was inconsistently cooked.
Nothing particularly bad, just a lot of mediocre. I have had better experiences. We will try Scion again when they have been open a little longer.
I am curious how to order from the "Noodle & Dumpling Bar" Menu since it supposedly shares the same space. Would have asked but too many questions just seemed to be a challenge.
Have only enjoyed happy hour, so far. I look forward to them expanding their hours (so happy hour can start at 4, like their Dupont location) and also adding an all-day Sunday happy hour like the owner has been discussing. My friends and I love getting together on Sundays and this would be the perfect place to bring them all on a regular basis. I also hope they round out their bottled beer selection sooner rather than later.
Gary T said "Really excited to finally have a higher end restaurant in Silver Spring." ... umm...you apparently haven't spent much time in Silver Spring this decade. The decor/atmosphere of Scion is fine, but the place is certainly not as upscale as many other downtown Silver Spring offerings - 8407, Society, Jackie's, Ray's, or even Olazzo's, etc., but I'd certainly consider this the best offering in the west (read: sleepy/wholly residential) side of downtown Silver Spring.
Right off the bat the server told us that they bill themselves as a "craft beer place". Since we were there for dinner and, you know -- FOOD -- I had a moment of anxiety wondering about the non-drinking aspect of the evening. Husband, however, was very excited about the beer menu. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but I do like tasting it, so I was very pleasantly surprised that they sold 4 oz. portions of draft beer. Between the two of us we tasted 5 of the IPAs.
And it turns out I need not have been too overly concerned about the food. Fried pickles starter ... goes great with beer! Husband had the asparagus ravioli and he loved it. I had the rib-eye steak with frites and stuffed tomatoes. The steak was nice and marbled. The sauce -- more like a brown gravy but not bad. The frites were good enough, but the stuffed tomatoes were a bit boring -- a little bit of cheese, not even sure what kind, mixed with what tasted like cheap-o bread crumbs and baked. I still had half the steak, frites and tomatoes left on my plate at the end of dinner, plus practically all the sauce -- so I was pretty disappointed when I got home to find that the server had managed to get only the steak and tomatoes into the take-out container -- no frites, no sauce. Boo.
The decor... modern 70s Asian retro chic with dark faux-wood, stylized art and Merlot stained polished concrete floors. A little echo-y for my taste, but it wasn't too noisy despite this. Odd mix of hipster music I could've lived without. Service was good if  not a little overly eager, but that is OK and to be expected with a new place. It was nice to see the genuine enthusiasm over the beer menu.
I think the biggest question mark about this place is the location. On East-West Highway, there isn't much happening in the immediate 2-3 block radius. A Tex-mex restaurant that had been successful for nearly a decade in Four Corners moved about 1.5 blocks from this location and was closed in under a year (despite running specials that they had never ONCE run in Four Corners). Anyway, Scion is only a couple blocks from Metro, but it's kinda in the wrong direction from the "downtown" Silver Spring area where the bulk of the restaurants, bars, theaters and stores are. There is street parking, and a public garage about a block down the street but you'll need to either overshoot the restaurant or trek away from it to get to a crosswalk. Not a big deal, but I find that these little things add up. Unless the food and drink is really stellar and the atmosphere superb, I think they will struggle to bring people to this spot.
My husband I went on a Sunday night so it wasn't packed. I ordered the crab cakes and he ordered the risotto - both were delicious. The crab cakes had the perfect crab to filling ratio. They were crispy on the outside and very tasty. They came with crispy fries, which were a little spicy and very good.
My husband also really enjoyed his risotto with scallops. I took a bite and it was quite flavorful with a variety of textures.
I enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be back. The only tiny thing I'll ding them on is that our server came over way too many times to ask it if everything was okay. It was disruptive to our conversation, but I'll chalk it up to them being new and wanting to make a good impression. NBD. We'll definitely return.
We ordered the crab dip, duck gnocchi, and risotto. Dip, which was served with warm pita, was okay. Appreciated that it wasn't over-salted. Did not appreciate the long wait time. Duck gnocchi was flavorful, although it drowned in the sauce. The consistency was more like stew, which was unexpected for this dish. The risotto was bright and well balanced, but a little runny. Dined here on their opening night, so hopefully that accounts for the uneven results, and will improve if we should dine here again.
Review Source:Just got back from Scion for dinner on a Saturday night. Overall I was very impressed with this new addition to the area.
The Good:
- Roommate and I both ordered a Mac And Cheese and the Scion Burger. I got my burger medium rare and it was just perfect. The consistency of the medium rare was just about right, not too overcooked and not undercooked. The burger wasn't overly moist or dry and was one of the better burgers I've had. The onions and fried pickles on it were a nice touch, but the beef was marinated very well that it had a good kick of flavor. As for the mac and cheese, it was really yummy, but it was way too hot and I burned my tongue on it just a tad.
- The draft beers are fantastic as well. I had a Flying Dog Wildeman and it was a really tasty craft beer that complimented my food very well
- The decor and interior feel was very modern and clean
The Bad:
- We had a 20 minute wait time because we did not have a reservation, even though the restaurant clearly wasn't full. Why, we had to wait is perplexing.
- There were several mosquitoes flying around near our table. No idea where they came from, but they were annoying.
- The pricing is a little high for the entrees. Granted, this is a Dupont restaurant being implanted into Silver Spring, so the prices will be Dupont prices, so that should be expected.
Overall, it was a great dinner and the food was fantastic, but don't expect to leave without dropping around $30 dollars for dinner and a drink. 4/5
Really excited to finally have a higher end restaurant in Silver Spring. Â I really enjoyed my experience here. Decor is nice and modern.
I went on opening night to have a few craft beers and appetizers. Â The beer selection is great! Â They have 12 craft beers on tap and a few local beers from MD and VA. They were having some issues with the taps, but I guess they will work those out. Â Service was spotty, but since it was the first night, we didn't hold that against them.
Appetizers that we ordered were good. Â I had the scallops with a side of white beans--cooked perfectly. Â White beans were both sweet and spicy--- nice kick. Â Also had the edamame hummus which came with chips. Â I was hoping for pita bread, but the chips were adequate. Â It was also good.
Friday night we went back for dinner. Â My partner had the duck gnocchi. Â He enjoyed it, but commented that the gnocchi was more like a dumping. Â I had the turkey meatloaf with mushroom gravy. Â I really enjoyed it, but I think I would next time ask for the gravy on the side. Â
I thought the prices were very reasonable.  Service was once again spotty on Friday, but the waitress did apologize.  Reviewers  above did say that they had good service so it's probably a bit uneven. I'm sure it will get better.  I did have a chance to meet the owner ( very nice) and she was walking around making sure things ran smoothly.
Welcome to Silver Spring, Scion Restaurant!
Went to dinner tonight with my husband, sister, brother-in-law and our respective sons (mine 10 mo, theirs 34 mo).
They have a good sized menu and the price point was not cheap but seemed pretty fair. We enjoyed almost everything about our visit.
The good:
Service - friendly, prompt. Our server seemed more knowledgeable about the beer than the food but it was only the 3rd night of operation. The table gets a pitcher of water which I kind of love because I hate not having enough water but I also hate having the poor server hovering to keep my glass full.
Food - my husband enjoyed the filet au poivre. They butterflied his filet which he said confused him but it was cooked well and the sauce was good and mushroomy. His mashed potatoes were a little cold though so food running could use work. My brother-in-law had the LBJ Mac-n-cheese. Lobster bacon jalapeño. All the words you want to read. It was a major hit for him and the table (everyone stole bites). Solid lobster chunks and a nice serving size. My scion burger was good. Not "amazing" Ray's the Classics burger good but respectable. Was glad we ordered an app of the fried pickles since you can't really taste it on the burger.
Fried pickles, excellent app. Goes FAST between 4 people and toddler. Baked Brie was good, would have loved more. Order comes with 5 pieces. Same goes for the blue cheese croquettes (only 2 pieces). Wasabi Caesar salad has a nice kick. Spicy white bean succotash was pretty amazing. It got cold, too, but flavor flavor flavor!
The not as good:
Duck gnocchi - taste was not there. The shredded duck in the tomato sauce seemed like it didn't have the right balance. Needed more flavor (spice?) or richness. And the gnocchi was giant. Like 2 inches long giant. Kind of looked like cooked slugs but consistency of stuffed shell filling. We ended up feeding most of it to the baby because it was a good texture for a kid with only 3 teeth
No highchairs or boosters - the hostess gave us a booth and let us keep our stroller with us but it was not an ideal setting for family dining. I don't think they need a kid's menu but having accommodations for kid's seating would have been better. They have a changing table in the restroom though so I'm hoping they'll learn that Silver Spring is very family-centric and get some stuff for our young Springers ASAP.
Dessert - our options were carrot cake, key lime pie and chocolate lava. Our server didn't seem that excited to sell them to us and they seemed pretty whelming. Could use work!
Glad to have another "new American" spot in the DTSS walking neighborhood. 8407 kitchen bar is a better setting but food is comparable.
Scion Burger $11 (5/5 NOMs)
Hello there burger goodness! I just love very flavorful wagyu beef with fried pickles on top. FRIED PICKLES!!! There is peach ketchup in this, but I couldn't really taste it. I want to order it on the side or extras. This is one of my most favorite new places in the are and I can't wait to go back.
LBJ Mac and Cheese $19 (5/5 NOMs)
Its all the cheesy goodness with lobstery bacon deliciousness. One cheese is not enough, so they have 5 cheeses. You can never have enough of cheese! It comes with whole lot lobster. As you bite into it you will discover a nice little hint of Jalapenos. Excellent dish you just have to try.
