Could turn me vegetarian. Really. Regret not giving this place a chance earlier based on its appearance and the "fast food" on the sign. (it is not!) Better than Khana Kazana though less choices are available.
Awesome food. Everything I tasted I either liked or loved. Especially the special, Mutter (pea) Paneer (cottage cheese like thing). They use fresh peas which are a lot more expensive than frozen and you can definitely taste the difference. Anyone who dislikes peas has never had fresh ones (give peas a chance). OH they BURST in your mouth with sweetness!
And they are not stingy with the stuff either, lots and LOTS of peas. I was so mad when my boyfriend ate my leftovers (we ordered for 3 people to try as much food as possible)
#19 Paneer Curry was good too, not as spicy and pea-y but good.
Their garlic naan is sooo fresh. They use actual pieces of garlic and none of that flavoring rubbish. OOhhh so soft and chewy....
Excellent service. I was not sure what to get as my bf's friend was the one that recommended this place to us. The manager was extremely happy with helping us order food and making recommendations. He even gave us a free full size sample (6-8oz container) of garbanzo curry thingy as it was our first time and seemed to have fun watching us enjoy his culture's food so much.
He takes GREAT PRIDE in his food, I can tell by the quality of the food and the way he talked about it. I will definitely be coming back for more. This time I will save room for dessert.
I was not a fan. The concept fast Indian food but it meant all the food was precooked. The rice was a little too soggy and my dish lacked spices. Judging from the other reviews, I probably just had an isolated bad experience but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go back. The owner was great though. he was very nice and helped me decide on what I eventually got.
Review Source:I LOVE Shaukin. Â I shouldn't even compare it to the other Indian restaurants in town since the food is so different (and it's not buffet style) but it's really my favorite Indian restaurant in the zone (Sharma's Kitchen being the second).
Unlike the other Indian restaurants you don't have to feel guilty after eating here (both money and amounts of food consumed). Some of the items are really cheap and thus small and "snack like".
The chicken curry is deliiiiiiiicious. Â The non-veg meal is my current favorite (comes with the chicken curry, soup, rice puffs, yogurt, chilies.) Â They usually have specials written out on a little blackboard by the side of the menu (like different types of dosas, or fresh watermelon juice which I usually get when they have it).
Anyway. If you haven't tried it yet because you're not sure you'll like it just give it a shot. Get something cheap in the menu, see if you like it (like the papdi chaat). On a side note, my friend just moved to India and said this place is legit :)
Shaukin's definitely the best place to get Indian food around campus. When I was at Purdue, my buddies and I would usually come here twice or thrice a week!
PROS : (i) It's authentic (unlike many Indian restaurants which seldom please my taste buds that trained for good Indian food) The food is extremely tasty. The Chaats are heavenly and the platter/meals are very palatable - freshly prepared, not too oily, not too spicy. Just perfect!
(ii) The owners are really friendly and nice.
CONS : I don't have anything bad to say about this place, except some items on the menu are tad overpriced.
And yeah, this place doesn't have much seating. And it has plastic benches and chairs. So if you are looking for a classy ambience, then this is not the place. But if you are looking for good, hygenic and tasty food, Shaukin is the place to go!
Really nice owners. Â Really good food! Â The serving side is very generous and the price is good. Â The dish I usually get is $6.41 after tax, and if you take home the leftovers it is enough for a second or third meal.
They are in the same building with the Silver Dipper, at the corner of River & State. Â Be careful crossing River Road if you are walking here from campus, as it is a very busy highway. Â If you drive, they do have ample parking in front.
For 'fast food' in the U.S., it's quite difficult to judge the meals served at Shaukin poorly. Unlike the prototypical Indian buffet where the food is lukewarm at best, the meals here are served so piping hot that when you dip your bread and fingers into the pav bhaji, you burn them.
My recommendations are as follows, and when I say recommendations, I really mean that they are *must* tries: the vada pav, idli sambar, and pav bhaji. A word of warning to those who have little spice tolerance, I would avoid the vada pav. You might cry from the glorious pain that it creates.
I've tried other selections from the menu, but nothing else had the same appeal as the above. The dahi puri is good, but every time it is much too garlicky. I don't really mind, but if you take a date there, I advise you not to order it.
The restaurant itself is simple, its seating consisting of lawn furniture and its wall decor of students professing their undying love to Shaukin. The service is quick, and the behind-the-scene miracle workers are very kind.
Taken from the perspective of someone who's been to India (but is not native), this is the closest you'll get to authentic Indian food in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area.
I like this place because they have food that is different from the other Indian restaurants in town. It is a casual place where you eat on styrofoam plates. The food is spicy and inexpensive. Two samosas for $2.99, chaat platter for $5.99, and a Frankie for 3.99. Many vegetarian friendly items.
Review Source:This place is a big NO. I have lived in India and tried all kinds of Indian food for the last 30 years and I have also worn the hat of a professional chef for Indian food. Being a connoisseur of Indian food, I must say this place totally sucks. It stands nowhere close to Indian food (especially the street food like chaat). Even in US, there are far better Indian eating joints in Indianapolis, Chicago, NY, NJ, Milwaukee, LA etc and I have been to a lot of them. But Purdue, West Lafayette has limited options for Indian food and that is why this place is able to loot the customers. I would recommend going to any other Indian restaurant instead of wasting dollars in Shaukin.
Pathetic food quality and unprofessional behavior by the owners. Many Indian customers have complained the irritant nature of the owner. He should seriously get a training in customer satisfaction.
To all the customers who happen to be there, I would request not to judge the real Indian food flavors by eating at this pseudo Indian joint. The real Indian cuisine is far more delicious than the carp you get here.
I get it, Purdue cherishes the fact that there's an affordable chaat place around campus, but that's not enough to redeem this place.
Firstly, I ordered the samosa chaat with emphasis on "very little yogurt". What I received, however, was a very unsatisfactory product. I might as well have ordered yogurt in a bowl with a a touch of samosa and chole.
I also ordered a paneer frankie - which is essentially a malaysian paratha wrapped around a few pieces of stir-fried paneer. This wasn't bad but it showed me how inconsistent they are. My friend, who ordered the same thing clearly had way more paneer in his wrap than I had in mine.
I'm a strong believer that customer service makes or breaks a restaurant - Shaukin has miles to go before finding its true potential.
With the restaurant moving closer to campus & expanding in size & menu there is no denying that they offer the best Indian cuisine on Purdue campus. A must visit place for all food enthusiasts.
Do try their Papdi Chaat & Samosa! Love them.
And even though the portions are relatively small in size, so is the cost. You can easily order two menu items for the same or lesser cost of a dinner than eating at a full entree place.
I love Indian food, and Shaukin knows how to make it right. It's different fare than what you'll find at the other Indian restaurants in town, because it's Indian fast-food. My favorites are the Frankie's - very delicious. The proprietors are always friendly and smiling, and even though this place is a bit out of the way, I try to stop in whenever I'm on that side of town.
Review Source:This is one of the best Indian fastfood places you can find in miles of Purdue. Driving to this place (which is quite far from the the center of the town) is about 15 mins, but the food is totally worth it.
It tastes a lot like home cooked food (for Indians). I've tried all of the items and I love them. Favourites are Vada Pav and Dahi Papdi Chaat.
They also serve tiffen for lunch times and deliver free to campus. Call them and try this out atleast once!
MMMMM CHAAT! Â
If you decided you wanted to eat fast food every day, I'd pick this place over McDonald's each time!
I love how it's a tucked away hole in the wall but how it's a super clean, friendly, and organized hole in the wall. Â I've been there twice now and I definitely recommend getting the entire CHAAT PLATTER so you can get a taste of everything. Â Of course, anything drenched in yogurt, chutney, tamarind with a little bit of crunch has got to be good. Â The two best chaats I've had: DAHI BATATA PURI and SAMOSA CHAAT. Â
FRANKIES are popular but for something different I'd go for the GRILLED BOMBAY SANDWICH or the VADA PAV. Â
And my most favorite part of all~~~SWEET LASSI! Â A bit pricey at $2 but I would drown myself in it if I could.
Advice: it's kind of a long wait; order from the car. Â there's not many places to sit; be prepared in winter to eat it in your car if you have to. Â don't try getting full off this place if you're going for dinner or you might just keep ordering and ordering! Â it's good for a snack; remember, it's "indian fast food".
Shaukin is marketed as an Indian fast food restaurant, and it certainly lives up to such a title. It should be noted that there is no dine-in area. The restaurant itself is tiny. It does have a drive through though, so I recommend calling ahead for carry out.
The menu is small, but apparently they plan to add more items soon. The menu contains some small snack-like items like samosas, entrees like curries, various chaat and some specialty drinks. I had a chicken puff pastry which was a little larger than a pop-tart and consisted of a small amount of lightly spiced chicken in a flaky crust. I thought it was a good, light, snack food. I also had the chicken curry. It wasn't bad, but it was not nearly as good as Khana Khazana or bombay.
It's notable that Shaukin offers catering and delivered Tiffin meals, which I think will be the next thing I try from them.
