Started with a fish taco appetizer, they were flavorful but the fish is one fried piece. It's substantial but I found the fish a bit mushy. For soup we got the She Crab soup. It was very thick, much more like a chowder. It also had a cinnamon/ nutmeg flavor to it, could have been much better. For our main dish we got the Snow Crab Boil which was big enough for two people. The crab was cooked perfectly and the corn was very flavorful, the sausage had a nice spiciness to it. Finished up with some delicious Key Lime Pie, definitely would recommend it. All in all, it was a good experience and meal.
Review Source:The outside deck bar on the water is a hidden gem...and only a few hundred feet away from the crowded decks at Red's and Water's Edge. Â Their happy hour menu has come a long way and now offers some of the best deals in town. Â A lot of my friends have told me that they avoid this place simply because of price but I have found a lot of items on the menu that were delicious and very well priced. Â Some of their entrees are on the high side but I guess that's what you'd expect when at a touristy type spot on the water. Â The building itself needs a little upkeep work but all and all I've had great experiences here and plan to spend many summer nights relaxing on that deck bar.
Review Source:We e been visiting Shem Creek for the past six years. Â Sad to say, it isn't getting better.
It's a cool atmosphere with a great outdoor bar by the creek. Â Boats pull up to the landing and hungry sailors can grab a bite and a cold one. Â It has a beautiful view!
Inside, the wooden walls and the decor remind me of a boy's club. Â I enjoy it, but my wife wasn't terrifically impressed by Captain Tony and some of his thoughts on life.
The food is fine, but whereas six years ago you got a monstrous serving of hot, fresh seafood, now you get a rather pedestrian serving of food. Â It's good, but something has charged, I'm just not sure what. Â There was a bite to the food that seems to be missing now, but maybe that is just nostalgia.
Fun? Â Absolutely! Â Great view, nice people, cold beer, but the food let me down a little this time. Â We'll keep coming back because we enjoy the visit, but I hope the food improves a little.
This place is OK - nothing great, nothing terrible - lots of tourists, but that should be expected for the whole Shem Creek area - you will not find a lot of locals here.
Service was very rushed on a Saturday night, but competent and friendly. Drinks were weak, I have had much better fries seafood in Charleston. I would return, maybe after  the summer is over.
I came here for breakfast, so we didn't do the normal seafood route that many try here. But I heard I had to come if I was down in Charleston and I'm happy I made the trip.
The place has a very fun, relaxed southern vibe. The server was friendly, and the food came quickly. They had classic rock playing in the background and we sat in the back room surrounded by big windows overlooking the bay and shrimp boats.
I had eggs benedict that came with a fried green tomato on it and a side of fried okra. The heart probably wasn't happy, but I sure was. I'm an eggs bene. nut, so this one did not disappoint!
The Bloody Marys are also excellent and a must try for breakfast/brunch!
This is an older, VERY casual restaurant that was okay at best. Â I tried the Ultimate Cosmo and must say I was ultimately disappointed. Â It was tasteless and hot. Â My sister ordered the Oyster Rockefeller appetizer, which she thought was very good. Â For entrees, I ordered the grilled shrimp which was quite tasty and plentiful. However, I did notice that some of the shrimp were not deveined properly, which is a major no-no for any restaurant in my book. Â The rest of my party ordered the Seafood Spectacular, which received thumbs up from everyone. Â The service was quite fast even though they were very busy. Â We had nice time, but it wouldn't be somewhere I would return.
Review Source:This place is rather old and run down, but if you sit outside, you're afforded an awesome view of the Shem Creek. Â We went on a quite day for a late lunch, and were probably one of two groups of people eating in the restaurant, it was that dead. Â The deck needs some serious work, as there are warped and splintered boards around, but all-in-all, it was nice sitting outside.
The food was decent. Â Nothing memorable. Â I do remember that the mojitos were really good, but they were fairly expensive. Â If they hadn't been on special that day, I wouldn't have even considered it.
We moseyed over here on Columbus Day and sat outside. Â The interior reminds me of a couple of restaurants where I grew up on the Jersey Shore (RIP Point Pleasant D-:) - a little dark, a little...dated. Â But who gives a crap when the food and service are good, amiright?!
Our server was very friendly and the food was very good! Â They didn't have a bartender for some reason and OF COURSE we had ordered mojitos (insert offensive Family Guy reference here). Â However, another server actually made them for us and QUITE WELL MIGHT I ADD! Â I felt like an ass but we troubled them for two more because they were awesome and for $6? A very large drink.
We both got the seafood - I had the shrimp and crab cake and a big thumbs up! Â I thought the prices were a wee bit steep for what we got, but overall, a good time!
We came for sunday brunch. Lots of different oysters. I liked the rockefeller the best, but the Shem Creek special was good too. We also ordered the fried oysters as an appetizer. Everyone enjoyed them.
I then got the Oysters Benedict for my main course. I felt like I had gotten my money's worth.
It's not a fancy place and doesn't really aim to be, but it offers good seafood at a good price and I'd go back. Everyone in our party of six cleaned their plate, including desert.
What a pleasant surprise! This was recommended to us by someone who was a local, and he was totally on point! It was a little more laid back, and casual, than we were looking for but that was okay - it was less expensive than we expected, as well! Great service, cheesy "fisherman" decor throughout the restaurant, and great food are how to sum up this place!
We shared a helping of the crab dip; which was fantastic! And the broiled seafood platter which came with a nice helping of shrimp, scallops, mahi and some other goodies. The waitress allowed us each to have salads with the meal, so that took care of our two sides which was convenient (and less expensive).
This is a peaceful, relaxed spot, that had no wait on a Saturday evening. I am sure it is pretty crazy during the peak season! Also, watch your GPS! We ended up walking into a restaurant up the street that said "this happens all the time" we thought we were in the right spot, but were directed to the correct place up the street - whops!
These people should be a shamed of how much they have let this place run down. I use to come here and have a great meal but it's seen it's day! The creepy old unfriendly women who greets you on arrival needs to give up her job! This place is a mess, junk all over the place, they serve hug sloppy portions of food. Fancy bar food that is bad. So disappointed that I won't be going back. :( one of my favorites that's  gone.
Review Source:I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!
Sat in the bar in back - made a new friend in Big Al....tried an Oyster Shooter for the first time (AWESOME - and only $2!!!!). Had a couple drinks with the wife and watched the sunset.....casual, fun and romatic all rolled into one....then dinner....been here 3 times...after my first visit back in @2007....knew what I wanted...Shrimp and Grits.....as a Midwestern guy who never had a grit before Shem Creek....they  were AMAZING.....I've never had anything like this in Chicago.....A must stop every time I'm in Charleston.
This was an interesting find...
The service was okay, but not great. The waitress we had was a bit on the surly side initially, but got better as the evening ended. It should be noted that it was NOT busy during this time.
The food was hit or miss. My oyster rockefeller was gritty - that's a cooking no - no. However, the dirty Shrimp & grits was fantastic. The children's penne pasta was well cooked and served with a tasty red sauce.  The Shem creek sauté was awful.
The drinks were weak and were not very good. I would not waste $ on their drinks should we ever return.
All in all - can't quite give a recommend. There are better options in the area.
Skip this place... Not worth the price for mediocre food and bad management.
When my party of 6 arrived, we were greeted by a rude hostess. Even though there was no wait, she was perturbed we didn't make reservations stating they were full.
Funny that we were seated IMMEDIATELY at a big table with an exceptional view.
Two people ordered the Shem Creek Sauté. It was supposed to consist of clams, mussels, scallops with sausage pieces over linguine topped with fried oysters. Both were missing the mussels and scallops completely. When this was mentioned to the server, she responded that "they ran out".  WTH, tell people before providing a half a**ed dish.
This is a restaurant we will not be patroning again. Â
By far, the worse restaurant in Mount Pleasant/Charleston.
Sweet lord this is the WORST restaurant I have been to in Charleston. Â The absolute WORST. Â I read the reviews before hand and figured it was 50/50 chance of a good place, so why not try it.... right?
Wrong. Oh so wrong.
You want my reasons in a list, you say??? Of course I can provide a list!! Â I will even number it for you. Â Please see below.
1) Â Watched a female server leave the bathroom without washing her hands. Â Good move, nasty.
2) Â Host was incredibly rude, pretty much just tossed menus at us. Â I think he was just upset he couldn't go home and play video games. Â
3) Â Waitress, while very sweet, barely checked on us. Â If we wanted another drink, we probably would have been better off getting up and walking to the bar to get one. Â She also failed to give us silverware. Â We also had to get that ourselves. Â Who needs a waitress? Not us. Â Our plates also came out pretty spaced out, like 10 minutes apart.
4) Â Average plate on the menu costs between $17 and $20. Â WHY IS THIS??? The place is scummy and old. Â Not well kept at all. Â I don't give a crap what your rent is on the place if you can't even keep it clean. Â No justification at all for the high meal price.
3) Â Food was disgusting- and that is being kind. Â My friend had the low country boil with shrimp and it was completely dry and without flavor. Â I had the gumbo, and while it had plenty of seafood roaming around in it, I questioned the quality of the seafood in it... it gave me that weird feeling you get when something just doesn't taste right about your food...
That's it. That's all I've got. Â I'll admit, I got a little heated writing this review. Â I wish I could have given zero stars. Â The only reason they get ONE star is because their oyster shooters with beer are pretty kick ass.
Service was slightly slow, and I didn't enjoy our server.
BUT... the view is incredible overlooking the river. Â The bartenders at the outdoor bars are friendly and attentive.
The food was very nice, but the view is definitely the best part of the venue.
Go expected good friend and a great view, but be in a patient mood.
It's a local semi-dive bar/restaurant, and we enjoyed it immensely. Â We sat at the back bar overlooking the river. Â Our bartender was attentive in spite of being busy. Â The locals we spoke with were very friendly. It was Happy Hour and we enjoyed the drink and food prices. The mussels off the $5 menu were yummy as well as the wings, and the oysters were awesome. Did I mention the Oyster Shooters made with beer? Â Oh boy...too bad we were driving and could only have a couple. Â The Bartender shucked us a good variety of oysters....by the way, the local oysters were nice and salty sweet.
I look forward to returning here on my next trip.
Booo Shem's. Â I had so many great memories of you.
So many seating areas, each with different rules and different menus. Â Happy at this bar but not that bar. Â Bar out on the far deck had a different menu. Â Ugh. Â Service kinda slow. Â Standout happy hour item was the oyster shooter. Â Tacos and crab cake sliders were ehhhh.
I stopped in at Shem Creek for one glass of wine...ended up having a very relaxing evening at the bar with a fabulous meal!
The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful and immediately asked me what I wanted to drink. I was surprised that they have a  decent wine list. I also ordered some crab dip (after seeing others devour plates of it), a salad, and some shrimp. The crab dip was delicious! Definitely the highlight of the meal...gosh, I actually want some more of that right now.
Went here with our extended family while visiting Sullivan's Island. We wanted an authentic seafood restaurant but didn't want to make the trek into downtown Charleston (esp. on Saturday night!)
Shem Creek is set a little away from the main drag in Mt. Pleasant, so it's very pleasant and relatively quiet. The vibe is very Southern Fish House, complete with multiple decks and a bustling bar seen. We ended up sitting close to the front of the house, but I'd suggest sitting back by the creek since the views are nicer.
We ordered a number of things, including the She-crab soup, the low country boil, the southern fried fish platter and the gumbo. She-crab soup was very average and incredibly thick and rich (too much so). The low country boil was very tasty, with a nice spicey sausage. The fried seafood platter was predictable but good (fries were very good). The gumbo was by far the best - large portion, well spiced. We also ordered a couple of kids meals, which were ok. Was pretty irritated that they charged extra for milk ($2.75 for a single milk!)
Service was top notch - fast, efficient and very nice.
Overall this is NOT a destination restaurant but a good choice if you want decent seafood and don't want to go into Charleston.
Do yourself a big-ole-favor, and walk on out to the enclosed back deck bar one afternoon (The one NOT shaped like a boat, and the one NOT over the actual water). You'll find "Big Al," the coolest bartender this side of the sun. An intimidating old black guy who quickly reveals himself to be a hilarious and lovable lowcountry staple.
Here's how your meal should go:
Al's Oyster Shooters, or... substitute a Shem Killer cocktail. DELICIOUS.
Shrimp N'Orleans Appetizer
She Crab Soup (required, don't leave here without eating this.)
Seafood ala Wando (or the Shem Creek Saute if you abhor grits)
Don't waste too much time with dessert here, fill up on the cocktails and appetizers instead... they're much more delicious!
This is a great place for dinner! Awesome food (great seafood dishes), but my ultimate fave: the Seafood ala Wando!! It's amaaazing! The scallops, the shrimp, the fish, those cheesy grits!! My mouth is watering, and I'm so wishing to be back in South Carolina for this dish right now! ORDER THIS DISH! The oyster variety they have is also pretty scrumptious!
The servers are really friendly, and overall, it's just a very comfortable setting! I recommend! :)
My sister and I took our baby sis to Charleston for her b-day for the weekend. We heard about Shem's via the web and decided to give it a try. We went on a Saturday for lunch. It opened at 11:30 and we were promptly seated.
I ordered the daily special which was the Shem Burger. It was supposed to be a crab cake type sandwich. The crab cake was mostly filler and it had no taste. I only ate half because I was not going to send it back. You know what happens when you do that!
My baby sis got the fisherman's platter and a bloody mary-she loved it
My middle sis got something that she enjoyed as well.
The service and atmosphere was great...food not so much
I think Shem Creek Bar & Grill is better suited for drinks vs food. I found the food to sub par and pricey for what you get. I can definitely see just going there for drinks and hanging out, but wouldn't want to eat there.
Beyond the food, it has interesting decor and the service was good.
I can't believe I lived in Charleston for seven years and never came here. Â I guess the view at Vickerys had me so won over I refused to try anything else, big mistake!
We came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and the seven of us were seated right away! Â Crayons and kids menus to keep the little ones happy.
I ordered the Fried Green Tomato and Oyster Stack, delicious. Â Jon had a bucket of Oyster ($10.99).
Our friend Todd had Chicken and Waffles - Fantastic!
The food was delicious and we all agreed it was much better than the dinner we had the evening before at 82 Queen for a fraction of the cost.
I wish I wasn't a 10 hour drive from Shem Creek Bar and Grill, Yum!
I'm sad that some people didn't enjoy their meals as much as we did. Â We stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed their shrimp n grits (with yummy andouille sausage!) and crabcakes. Â We also had some extremely fresh local oysters and loved them! Â We also came back another evening just to have drinks and watch the sunset, which was spectacular. Â The dock bar isn't open this time of year but lots of people were grabbing drinks inside and walking out. Â I really like how it is set away from the other bars and restaurants on Shem Creek and I think you can enjoy the atmosphere and sunset better out there. Â I really enjoyed both visits and look forward to my next one!
Review Source:This meal was the low point of our vacation. We wanted some low country boil and this place was noted as being really good. However, it seemed to be more of a "tourist trap".
The low country boil was disappointing. It was 15 shrimp, a corn on the cob, 2 new potatoes, and 4 sausage pieces. There was no flavor at all.
They served white bread with the meal and it was not even as good was cheap white bread.
The service was fine and the outside dining area appeared nice.
My guess? Shem Creek B&G would be a great place to take in a beautiful Lowcountry sunset with a few cocktails. Â Nestled among the reeds, the rather spacious deck would be an ideal place for drinks with friends. Â
Great views notwithstanding, the food here was a huge disappointment. Â Oh my gosh. Â I stopped in for lunch just yesterday, and I really do not get why a restaurant, ON THE WATER, in CHARLESTON of all places, serves FROZEN FISH?! Â What! Â The Mahi Mahi was like a piece of rubber and was actually very reminiscent of the salmon I tried to choke down with a few glasses of white wine at Overlook Grill in G'ville (as featured in my first review of OG right here on yelp). Â Okay, next was the crab cake. Â Definitely edible but totally greasy, and I think there may have been a few shells in the mix that almost cracked one of my fillings. Â The best part were the three or four very weird, very displaced, overcooked noodles which were hiding underneath my soggy vegetable medley. Â
On a lighter note, the iced tea was refreshing and delicious and my server couldn't have been any nicer. Â Like I said, go to Shem Creek Bar & Grill for the lovely setting, drinks, and maybe a shrimp cocktail or a dozen oysters on the half shell (if you're into that kind of thing).
If there was a 2.5 star rating, Shem Creek Bar and Grill would get that, but I don't feel like it deserves a 3. Â
The best part is the location, without a doubt. Also, for lunch I'd give it three stars, but dinner has been a near-disaster every time I've eaten here. Â It's VERY loud in the restaurant, service is mediocre at best and the dinner options are somewhat limited compared to lunch.
If you go for lunch, check out the specials, sit in the dock bar, enjoy a great bloody mary and relax.
I had dinner here about a month ago during my maiden visit to Charleston. I was with some friends who were raving about how good the seafood was and I guess they built the place up so much that I was kind of disappointed. The best thing about this place is not the food, but the scenery. While we were waiting on the back porch, we enjoyed some drinks on the outdoor bar and just watched the sunset, which was beautiful.
But, I just wasn't impressed with the food. I only ordered two things, which were both appetizers - the Crab Dip and the Flounder Fish Tacos - and they were both good, but not great. The flounder was awesome, but the accompanying Boom Boom sauce (Texas Pete and mayonnaise) was a disappointment.
Overall the menu was not nearly as exhaustive as I'd expect at a seafood restaurant and I don't really see myself returning during my next trip.
Enjoyed some fried seafood here with friends on a Saturday afternoon. While it wasn't very busy, it's not quite beach season down on the SC coast in early May.
The menu here offers a wide array of options for those looking to get their seafood fix in Mt. Pleasant. For those not wanting anything fishy there is a pretty good selection of entrees. Everyone at the table chose the fried seafood plate, which offers up to 4 different ocean-dwellers. I ordered a 2-item plate ($1 more than a 1-item plate) of Fried Shrimp & Flounder, with sides of Creamed Spinach and Hush Puppies. My entree in order of deliciousness: Creamed Spinach, Shrimp, Flounder, Hush Puppies.
While it's not the best fried seafood in the area it is relatively affordable and was a close, quick place to eat. I would go back again but if there is going to be a long line I might find other restaurants.
Quick Notes: Apparently if you order a 2-item plate, you must order 2 different items and can not "double-up" on the same item. This was a point of confusion for us during the meal and still seems to make no sense. Also, in the name of nitpicking, I take issue with the beer menu, which places certain brands of beer in the "microbrew" category and should have no place as such. Other names/labels didn't exactly tell me what the beer was either, just the brewery and state.
Hit this place up and tell me what you think!
Only hit this place for the view, beer and an oyster appetizer. Â All performed well. Â We sat outside and could see the marsh, the creek, the birds, the boats and the mist produced by the rail-level irrigation system (nice touch).
Why three stars? Â The oysters were $20 a dozen. Â A little high for my taste. Â They were good.
I trust Scott S on the menu, must be good.
I love this place. Â The food is fantastic. Â The view of the creek and marsh is a very relaxing scene. Â I Â highly recommend their grilled prime rib entree. Â Delicious! Â It's the only thing my wife has ordered when we've been there. Â Prices are moderate and the service has been excellent in my experiences. Â You won't be disappointed.
