Great restaurant, I like how they divided the restaurant by being upstairs and the bar is downstairs

Oh my goodness!  The shrimp and grits were amazing!  Great wine selection and the service was outstanding. I also had the cold avocado and lump crab 'soup' and I could have eaten a pool full. It was outstanding and there was enough lump crab for every last spoonful!  Only been here once but I'll be back. Take a shot, make a reservation and ENJOY!

The food is not outstanding but it's generally solid quality and we kept Silo in our rotation, but not any more. I received a book which contained a certificate for a free entree and decided to use it for a late lunch (I saw 3 or 4 other tables seated). After our meal, it took 20 minutes to get our check. My husband felt that it was clear that we were being treated shabbily because of the coupon. On top of that, the waiter added the tip to the meal, which I believe is not legal unless the certificate or menu tell you it will be done. I didn't complain because I actually leave at least 25% when I use a coupon, and he added 18%. In any event, I think it reflects poorly on an establishment if they treat customers poorly because they use a coupon that is offered.

Silo restaurant was excellent.  From the time that we entered and got seated to the wonderful dessert ending.  Our waiter, Carlos, was very attentive and provided detailed information about menu items.  I started off with a glass of Riesling and the spinach salad with the fried brie.  It was amazing!   My entree was the lemon snapper with lump crab and risotto.  It was cooked to perfection.  I ended with chocolate mousse in an edible chocolate cup.  Wow!!!   This place is definitely worth a visit.  Don't miss out.

Happy hour for the drinks is not bad but here is where the problem is.  Our first time there, we went in the front thinking it was Nosh and I guess it was but they said do you want the bar and they directed us to the back into the Silo bar. once at the bar we ordered drinks, prices were ok, then we asked for food menus and we got 3 different menus, one for Nosh, one for the bar at Silo and then one for the dinner menu of Silo.  Service was hit and miss, it was not crowded and there was enough staff but they were busy talking and eating.  So we order the Pork Belly sliders, hmm ok but that is it just ok, then we tried THE SIGNATURE DISH Chicken Fried Oysters, the first thing you smell is the grease and then it is all breading.  I really wanted to like this place and really expected more from the reviews.  No we want go back because there is so much better in town.

We have been eating at Silo way back when Mark Bliss was in the kitchen. Although the food is still excellent, I think it is time to reinvent. That old surprise I used to get from trying new flavor combinations is gone now. The last time we were there, was in the fall of 2012, I was disappointed for the first time. Nothing sounded exciting on the menu, was like going to same place for vacation year after year, with nothing new to explore.

Also, you know when you open a packet of sweet n low for your tea and if youre not careful, the dust of it can get on nearby food? Well, that's what our butter tasted like, the butter that is brought out with the basket of breads. We have no doubt it was recycled from another table. No doubt. We were drinking water and ordered a bottle of wine.

Hoping Silo does something new. They have it in them, I know they do!

I am starting to think that as I get older my palate has become more refined, and with that I have to say that my palate highly dislikes this place.

I love this location, I mean who wouldn't?! It's in a SILO. Beyond that the only thing that I've had worth mentioning here was the shrimp and grits and some sort of meat dish that I had many many moons ago. The shrimp and grits were great, but for a restaurant of this caliber I expect for them not to rest on their laurels (aka going back to their tried and true chicken fried oysters that they serve with everything). I think it is time to reinvent.

Aziz M. and I swung by last night for a nightcap and some sweets and sat ourselves promptly at the bar. Our bartender was FABULOUS as was the beer menu. We were able to order our dessert right at the bar which was great, but they were far from what I would expect from this place. We chose the creme brulee and the bread pudding, both were let downs. The bread pudding had potential but it was far too bready. When I think of bread pudding I think of a mushy mess of awesomeness, and this was not that. My creme brulee didn't have the right consistency and although it tasted alright I would not venture here again just for mediocre desserts that are overpriced. Sorry.

My fiance and I came here to celebrate our birthday dinner together here and we are really disappointed about the overall service at dinner... my man doesn't yelp but dude he wanted me to write this review!
Before heading up to the dinner area we hung out at the bar downstairs with the personable and friendly bartender, and was expecting good service after that. My guy asked her if she had hair gel (omg embarrassing) and she found it for him at the bar to fix his pretty hair.
It was a Monday evening and super slow, and that was good since we needed to catch the Spurs game. I don't see why we couldn't get excellent service. Our waitress never asked us what we were celebrating and was all over the place with our orders, she even wrote them down, how can you mess up Caesar salad and give us spinach. I ordered a side dish to go with my entree and I asked if that was coming out and she said yes, but then went to punch in the order! So, I said never mind on that and was given to me anyway no charge. By this time fiance was wondering if she was high... this was the first birthday dinner I ever had without dessert! Pretty sad birthday and sad service, with every thing sad, food wouldn't be as good cause we are complaining about the service =P
On to the grub this is what we ordered and shared. I am ducks number one fan and the confit leg was delicious, and seared yellowfin tuna was awesome, and I am not too crazy for the chicken friend oysters.

    SIGNATURE CHICKEN FRIED OYSTERS
Sautéed Spinach with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Tart Apples & Whole Grain Mustard Hollandaise
    SEARED YELLOWFIN TUNA
Sesame & Spice Crusted Sashimi Grade Tuna, Seaweed Salad, Avocado, Cucumber, Wasabi Mayo & Tobiko Roe
    CLASSIC CAESAR
Hearts of Romaine, Roast Garlic Croutons, Parmesan Crisp
    FIVE SPICE DUCK
Pan Roasted Duck Breast & Confit Leg on Almond & Apricot Couscous, Sautéed Haricot Vert, Blackberry Cider Sauce

Would I come here again, probably not.

chicken fried oysters are forgettable....duck was exquisite.  Atmosphere  is nice and overall a good experience...would return but don't order the oysters (small oysters, over breaded, with tons of sauce).

Okay simply put: if you see halibut on the menu GET IT! You would be a fool not to. This is probably in the top five meals of my life *the halibut*

Silo is located in the back of the Nosh restaurant. You park and enter through the back, you enter the building, check in at the reservations desk and are escorted up a glass elevator to the main dinning room, which is dimly lit with candlelight and crisp white linens.

Service is great, always, every time I've been. The menu is creative and vast. Food of course delivers. For dessert, having had several of the options, I would go for the souflee.

I would go back ANY day for the halibut, but the other dishes salmon, pork, chicken have been pretty tasty as well.

AMAZING!!! Too bad I can only afford to go here once or twice a year! Everything is phenomenal down to the assortment of breads delivered to each table.

P.S. Bring the Seared Tuna burger back!!!

I've been to Silo three times now: once for dinner and twice for brunch, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience.  Their brunch menu is very expansive and one would have a hard time not finding something they'd like.  The first time at brunch I had the crab cake with poached egg, which ranked among the top crab cake benedicts I've ever had.  The second time, I tried the chicken fried oysters, poached egg, and shrimp remoulade; it was every bit as good.  While I didn't try it, one of my friends ordered the steak and eggs, which looked, and according to him was, amazing. My wife and one of my friends both remarked that the juice in their screwdriver and mimosa tasted like Sunny D and would have preferred if they had made it with their fresh-squeezed orange juice.

When my wife and I came in for dinner, we stopped at the bar downstairs first for a drink and an appetizer before sitting down to dinner.  Silo advertizes happy hour from 5 to 9 with both drink and appetizer specials.  While the drink prices were very reasonable, both my wife and I found the drinks to be very watered down, especially in contrast to my favorite restaurant:  Feast.  In addition, the bartender informed us that there were no appetizers currently on the happy hour menu, which was a bit of a disappointment as the management clearly advertizes such on their website.

Once seated for dinner we ordered another round of drinks: a beer for me and a double captain morgan and diet for my wife in the hopes that she might get a drink that actually tastes like an alcoholic beverage.  She was disappointed yet again.  For dinner we had the duck, which was fantastic, and the Sea Bass, which was also quite good.

Overall the food at Silo has consistently impressed, but I wouldn't recommend it as a place to have a drink unless you're going to stick with beer or wine.  The management ought to allow their bartenders to make drinks the way they should be, and not skimp on the alcohol to help their bottom line.

Just gotta update, I ate again here today... wow, very good.  We had a the three course dinner.   We had the duck spring rolls... I have never had anything like that!!! The spinach salad had fried brie cheese... holy cow, amazing!  The entrees were decent... but lets skip to the desserts... coconut pie is AMAZING!

... Now I know what everyone is thinking... "mm, im not a big coconut pie fan"... try it anyway!  it probably was the best dessert I've had in a long time. wow.

I told the guy upfront that I was using a coupon... and he didn't give me crappy service... usually groupon customers... we have to be stealthy and use the groupon towards the end.

San Antonio has some very good restaurants, you just have to know them... and not follow the morbidly obese masses that go to subpar places.  Also, attend their happy hour, really good live music during the week.

    Enjoy!

I have been wanting to go here for a long time to try the famous chicken fried oysters.

Sometimes when you hear so much hype on something there is no way the item can live up to those expectations and one ends up disappointed. This is one of those rare wonderful exceptions where the hype pales in comparison to reality.

The Chicken Fried Oysters; Crunchy fried oysters with Sautéed Spinach with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Tart Apples & Whole Grain Mustard Hollandaise. Reminded me of a crunchy Oyster Rockefeller. Fantastic.

I also had the Duck Spring Rolls, delicious fried spring rolls with plenty of tasty duck, Glass noodles, Cilantro, Shiitake Mushrooms & Hot Fanny Sauce. A home run, knocked clean out of the park.

Cannot wait to go back for more.

My first time here. I made reservations to dine solo and when I entered the "waiting area" I felt as if the hostess was trying to get me to eat in the bar downstairs instead of taking a seat upstairs. When I said that I'd prefer to have a table, an uncomfortable silence ensued until many minutes later when I was allowed to board the elevator to go up to the dining room.

Luckily, my waiter was very friendly and attentive without being cloying. The pacing was leisurely. The room is modern and interesting and it had a reasonable noise level.

I got spinach salad, vegetable risotto for the entree, garlic mashed potatoes and the orzo "mac" and cheese for sides, and the chocolate souffle dessert. (I had a Groupon and was dining alone!)

The salad came with a wedge of fried brie. Weird for me. I spread the brie on my bread, instead. The salad was too sweet (with both apricots and raspberries) and bacon light.

The risotto had a large portabella at the bottom of the bowl, and squash, asparagus, peppers arranged around the mound of risotto. The risotto itself was yummy but more like a rice dish. It had a lot of tooth, and needed more creaminess - it didn't spread in the bowl!

The potatoes were FABULOUS. The orzo green chile mac and cheese was okay.

Chocolate souffle dessert was great, though slightly burned on top. (I peeled those parts away.)

I noticed that several tables had Groupons and at the end of the meal, I got a $12 gift card for a future visit - so did several other tables. 3.5 stars would be more accurate, but I'd definitely be back if there was another Groupon offer.

Such a great place!  The special caprese salad was delicious...fresh tomatoes and mozzarella with pesto.  The pork tenderloin with cherry sauce, spinach and chipotle orzo was seriously good...I could eat that every week.  The atmosphere was nice and everything smelled wonderful.  The service was great too...not too overbearing, but right there when you needed him.

Check this place out when you are in San Antonio!

    CAUTION: Cougars Roaming Wild

This review is based on the bar and lounge only, not the restaurant.  So please keep this in mind.

Silo seemed like a place that should be popping with the young, trendy, couple crowds based on its location and appearances.  However, Silo is the DEFINITION of a Cougar Den.  Filled mostly with mid to late 40 somethings, that "don't take too kindly" to young folks coming 'round their parts.

This does't make it a bad place, just not for the young and fun looking to party type.  Now, if I was mid 40's, I would be 5 Staring this review....but I'm not.

The bartenders were not very attentive or pleasant, the drinks were mediocre, the prices were not worth what you got and over-all, even though I had a great time with the group I was with, I probably won't be a regular at Silo.

Shame as they seem to have potential, but the bar is just overrun by Cougars.

Silo is one of those restaurants where we always leave feeling underwhelmed. We started in the bar for Happy Hour and shared a couple of appetizers and drinks. The bar was pretty empty, especially for a Thursday night. The waitress got our appetizer order wrong and we wound up with jalepeno poppers instead of chicken wings. She did correct it and void out the poppers which were just average. We both enjoyed the wings.

We both ordered a specialty drink since they were on special - my husband enjoyed his Old Fashioned. I ordered the 209er. I love gin and since most of their drinks were vodka concoctions, I decided to give it a go.The 209 gin didn't have much bite. My lasting impression was that it tasted like a melted down jolly rancher.

Upstairs, we were seated quickly by a friendly hostess. We've been here multiple times and always had good service. This time was not great. Our waitress was really overzealous and regardless of the question/item we asked about, she responded with calculated enthusiasm. Everything was the best in the town. Actually, her excitement for EVERYTHING on the menu kind of weirded us out.

Anyway, we shared a spinach salad which was good - except that the fried brie was really heavy. My husband had the scallops which were well cooked - although he said they were caked in butter. The butter far outweighed the seafood flavor. I had the Seared Tuna Appetizer and thought it was fine. We both had a mojito which we thought were pretty sugary even though we specified that we didn't like an overly sweet drink.

I think for close to $30 a plate we wind up with fine food. But certainly nothing that overwhelms us.

One last thing....I feel like it's rare to see veal on a menu now. Especially in the trend to use more sustainable, humane food sources. It bothered me to see it. And so I asked about the tuna - which she assured me was wild caught - but when I asked her if she knew where the restaurant sourced it, she said it came from the Pacific Ocean.

I love love love the duck spring roll and the amazing sauce that comes with it.
Not a huge fan of the pork shank but still pretty good.
I really enjoyed the sea bass and my fiancé enjoyed the shrimp and grits.
If they have the coconut cream pie get it. it is amazing!

Fast service. Classy atmosphere. DELICIOUS food! :)

What I liked most was that my husband and I were able to split a prix fixe meal (for just $4 extra!). They put the salad and entree on separate plates and then we shared a chocolate mousse!

We brought a Groupon, but we didn't read the fine print: it's not valid for prix fixe meals! We weren't that bummed though because we enjoyed it enough that we'd like to come back. I think we'll probably split a main entree next time, too.

About as good as it gets. Awesome food, great service and that special something that pulls the place together... and in this case that something is an elevator.

To get the big rock out of the way, I love love love how the dining area is separated from the lounge and bar. It's a little bit of anticipation, wow factor and giddiness on the ride up. Almost like Willy Wonka... what's behind the doors when the elevator stops? Teehee!

A couple standouts were the duck spring rolls, both tenderloins (pork & beef) and the bread pudding. Everything was above average, but those kept conversation going in the car on the way back.

One of the rare places that lives up to the hype!

Out of the two Silo's in San Antonio, this is my favorite. It's modern and contemporary, otherwise known as "trendy"... I think it's restaurant in the from, bar in the back. I wish I could have had dinner to write a review about their food, but we only came here for the bar.

We went on a Saturday night and NO ONE was there. After talking with my hairdresser, she said the nights to go are Thursdays and Fridays. But, we were celebrating a birthday so at least most of the bar consisted of my friends. They have shuffleboard and comfy places to sit! A few drinks in, my friends and I decided we wanted to request a song-- there wasn't anyone in the bar so we figure the DJ wouldn't mind. WRONG.. the DJ said he would only play our request if we bought his drinks. Excuse me? No wonder no one was in this bar.

One of the bartenders reminded me of Kim Kardashian... she was cool. The bar staff is friendly, but the alcoholic beverages are NOT strong, so be prepared to order a lot of drinks!

My wife and I enjoyed Silo. The gals at the hostess stand were friendly (if just a bit too pretentious). Upon arriving on the second floor, we found the restaurant to have a pleasant, contemporary vibe. Our server was professional, humorous and very prompt.

We started with a Bibb Lettuce Salad which was very fresh and enough to share. My only complaint was that the salad was a bit light on bleu cheese (but I'm bleu cheese fan, so the more the better.)

Dinners were very good. My wife enjoyed her Jumbo Lump Crabcake. I was slightly less thrilled with the salmon and crab. The salmon seemed a bit unevenly cooked--parts were a bit overcooked while other parts were excellent. The chive mashed potatoes served with the salmon were delicious!

Most entrees are between $27 and $36, so this is a relatively pricey place to eat for San Antonio, but the service and cuisine are generally worth the expense.  I'm sure we'll be back, but we're also going to visit again to check out Nosh downstairs, which seems a bit more casual.

Unassuming on the outside, yet a short elevator ride up you are welcomed to the epitome of date night. Dark, candle lit, white table cloths and wine racks line the walls.

I ordered the the seared yellowfin tuna that was served on a bed of seaweed salad & ordered a spinach salad.  The yellowfin was a great quality fish and much thicker than I have had it served before.  The spinach salad had "crispy brie", apricots, raspberries, served with an bacon-sherry vinaigrette. The salad was OK, I didn't quit get the point of frying the brie as it tasted more like a fried mozzarella stick.

One room for improvement for Silo is to update the menu. I ordered the appetizer of yellowfin versus the entree because the appetizer was described as having tobiko roe which was missing when it was served. I asked the server and he replied they stopped serving it that way awhile ago. The appetizer was not described as having seaweed salad, however I am a fan so I didn't mind. Despite the discrepancy it was not a deal breaker and enjoyed my meal.

They have a nice wine/beer list and our server did not skip a beat.

We were in town visiting for a week and wanted to go to a very Fine restaurant. We did some research and picked the Silo on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. After a few awkward moments waiting for the hostess to decide if we were okay (we had a reservation) to take the elevator upstairs to the dining room we were seated at a table for 4 sandwiched between two tables for 2.  This configuration did not let the server or other staff move very smoothly while attending to our table.  My water glass sat empty a couple of times.  Plus we could hear our neighbors conversation.

Immediately after being seated we figured out our mistake...we didn't buy our meal with a Groupon Internet "deal." as every other table in the restaurant had.   First question......why would such a Fine $30.00+ a plate estabishment allow discount meals on the supposedly most busy night of the week?   Why would they need to?

Our waiter tried so hard during the meal, but the food and other staff members were not there to back him up.  The chicken fried oysters, a house specialty arrived cold. Our entrees were good but not over the top, although we we paid over the top prices. In general, there were nobody in the restaurant to steer the ship- no chef and no manager made their presence know that night.

Decent sounding menu turned out as Mom used to say to be "nothing extra."   Discounts devalue the restaurant and while the place was not full the influx of folks must have slammed the kitchen. Groupon is a way to get people in the door but when a restaurant stutter steps like the Silo did Saturday night it can become the kiss of death.

    Exquisite.
    No, really.
Put on your big girl panties and polish your classic pumps. Silo long has known how to do dinner the right way.
The warm, lamp-lit room is a nod to New York City boutique cafes.
The wait staff is courteous and full of witty banter.
The food is amazingly fresh, locally produced and cooked with seasoned chef flare.
It is expensive. But you get what you pay for.
Spinach salad is taken to a whole new level with crispy Brie.
You heard that right. Fried (and yet somehow ungreasy) cheesy goodness.
The chicken fried oysters are amazing. Vegetarian risotto with goat cheese is creamier than tapioca. Pan roasted chicken with fresh roasted vegetables (not soggy!)  and garlic mashed potatoes are gourmet comfort food.
My true test of a good restaurant is whether they serve a good martini, extra dirty.  Silo's does -- complete with the ice crystals floating at the top.
    Cheers.

Went there for lunch after my wife's promotion at Fort Sam Houston.

Food was very good, pricey, but the waitstaff was top notch.

As others have pointed out, this is in the pawn shop/check cashing part of town with, uh, only 'creative' parking available.

But it does feel like your own personal Bat Cave when you get inside and up the elevator.  Like I'm in the Embassy Compound in Libya or something.

This place is upstairs from silo bar. Park accross the street because you won't find any available parking at silo. You generally check in, wait at the bar until they are ready for you and then ride up on the elevator which all felt very fancy. The seating in the resteraunt is sparse and the tables are pretty close together. Most people here are 30's and up.
I came with a groupon and got the price fixe menu. My bf and I got a discount on a bottle of wine here with the coupon. The waitress suggested it and, I really liked it.
The spinich salad was good, my duck was very good, and my creme brulee was just good (although my bf's chocolate mousse was better).

Overall, I really liked it here.

It's not a huge food factory so make sure you make reservations far in advanceif you want to eat during primetime Friday or Saturday.
We had a Groupon for the Prixe Fixe meal.  They gave a credit on a bottle of wine rather than the pairings offered which was a great deal.
The best part of the meal was the beef fillet.  It was the best filet I have ever had, cooked perfectly medium rare. They provide a sharpe knife, but it was so tender it cut like butter.
Great atmosphere.  I prefer this location to the 1604 location.  The dining room is small and cozy.  The only entrance is via an elevator so you really feel secluded.  No worries of throngs of hungry spectators staring you down hoping you will leave and give up your table.  David was a great waiter and provided us great recommendations.

The Reservation: Called around 5pm Saturday and the earliest reservation I could get was 9pm.  Throughout the meal, the restaurant was full.

The Service: Our waitress was a 9 out of 10.  A bit rushed but timing was perfect.  Everything she said was purposeful.  When asked for a suggestion of the kind of wine we wanted, she recommended one which was spot-on.

The Ambiance: Being in our late 20's, we were the youngest ones dining.  Most men wore at least dress shirts, many had jackets.  Lighting was too dim.  The restaurant was cozy and small.  However, once 9:30pm approached, the music from the bar was disruptive.  Smoking is/was allowed in bar area, and unless you avoid the area, you will leave smelling of smoke.  Also, PARKING IS INADEQUATE causing us to park in the adjacent lot and to be accosted by the typical scam artist asking for gas money to get home.  The elevator ride to the restaurant is a nice touch.

The Food: The quality matched the price, but was not out-of-this-world.  We had the prix-fixe menu.  The house salad was just right - no oversized greens or iceberg lettuce.  We ordered OAK GRILLED BEEF TENDERLOIN (Garlic Spinach, Ricotta-Bleu Cheese Gnocchi), SEARED SEA SCALLOPS (with Garlic Spinach, Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes).  For dessert, we had Chocolate Mousse and Creme Brulee.  Again, food was very good, as we had expected it to be.  The wine we ordered was Colome Malbec.  Among San Antonio restaurants, this is a definite stand-out.

This place is pretty decent, not super spectacular.

We went during lunch and all the dishes were well-priced (HAZZAH LUNCH SPECIALS!) and pretty tasty (not super OMG delicioso).  The service was prompt ans competent (we got there when they opened).

    Good :
+ [mostly] tasty food at a good (lunchtime) price, I've heard dinner prices are much higher
    + good service
    + nice atmosphere
    + tasty bread

    Bad :
    - odd location & parking
    - hit-or-miss menu : my brother's and wife dishes were really good, mine was mediocre (I suppose that's what I get for playing it safe with the pork)

I'd definitely go again for lunch, maybe for dinner if I can figure out the best dish on the menu.

Silo isn't the best at anything it does, but it does a competent enough job on the big three (cuisine, service, ambiance) that I keep finding myself coming back for more.

As far as the food goes, they have a heavy hand with fats-- and frankly, fats guarantee a certain baseline deliciousness.  I enjoy their appetizers most of all.  The shrimp and grits, seared yellowfin tuna, and chicken fried oysters are all favorites (probably in that order).  There isn't a particular entree I love, although if you go for brunch, their french toast and omelettes are pretty well-liked.

The service is always good and the ambiance is sleek and elegant, and while a lot of people complain of claustrophobia sitting in the tightly packed dining room, it doesn't bother me at all.  As a veteran eavesdropper, I just think it makes my life a little easier :)

I've only been here once and it was in the bar area. The bar is below the restaurant and it's not that big. There's an area where you can stand outside but it's not that comfortable. There are nice couches and chairs around the bar to hang out at but if it gets crowded then the room gets pretty cramped.

The drinks are pretty expensive too. I went there one night and had a good amount on my tab by the end of the night and I didn't even drink much. The drinks are made pretty well though and the bartenders are nice. I would suggest this to someone that has a good amount of money and wants a semi-quiet evening.

I'm only now just beginning to get into the swankier restaurants in town, so I'm don't have much against which to judge Silo. What I do know, however, is that I enjoyed my meal thoroughly.

I went early to get the Prix Fix meal. I started with the spinach salad, which was dressed in a fruity vinegarette and finished with fresh berries. I was wary when I first saw the large hunk of fried brie sitting on top of the salad, but the salty softness provided a textural and flavor-al contrast to the crunchy salad and sweet dressing.

My entrée was the duck two ways - roasted breast in a blackberry cider sauce and a confit duck leg on apricot cous cous. Both were cooked perfectly and I enjoyed going from the sweet-sauced breast to the savory leg and cous cous and back again.

Dessert was a perfectly-cooked crème brulee, the rich custard ending a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

The entire time I ate my server was extremely helpful and paced the meal so that I didn't immediately get one course after another, but got time to savor the flavors with my glass of wine.

I may not have much of a frame of reference to compare Silo against, but I do know that it was a darn good way to start my foray into more sophisticated cooking. Also, I appreciate the pun in the name - it's "elevated cuisine," and you're taken up to the restaurant in an actual elevator. Clever.

Unfortunately, my high expectations for this place were not met by the kitchen staff last night at the Austin Highway location.  Let me start with the good stuff...

Chicken Fried Oysters and Shrimp and Grits were amazing!!  Very good.  I'd go back for those for sure.

My partner and I had the Beet Salad and Wedge Salad which was a special.  Although the flavors were great, the construction was awkward.  Beets and tomatoes were very large chunks and didn't feel integrated into the rest of the salad.  I know...picky.  As for the fried Onion Rings on top of the Wedge salad, they were cold and you should never serve anything fried cold.  Not good.

We noticed the table next to us enjoying a beautiful piece of Tenderloin with what looked like perfectly cooked Gnocchi.  So we both ordered steak.  Even though we had read the reviews about problems with temperatures of proteins here, we did this anyway.  My partner's steak was perfect.  Mine, I had to send back twice and ended up not eating it due to it being too rare.  And for a fine dining establishment, I expect them to prepare a new steak, not throw my old one on to the grill.  Same cold onion rings on top of the steak as well.  Finally the gnocchi looked like they came from a completely different restaurant than our neighbor's table.  Not rolled properly and so thick that they were not completely cooked in some cases.

Our server and the manager on duty were amazing in terms of service recovery.  I cannot fault them at all.  They comp'd both of our entrees and they even brought us a comp dessert which was outstanding.  But the kitchen staff need a lesson in consistency and grilling steaks here.

As I looked around, at other tables, items such as the crabcake and shrimp and other seafood dishes looked really good.  And it's hard to undercook those.  So if I lived here, I might go back.  I just wouldn't order steak.

Love the food and the service. Lunch is perfect-get a smaller portion at a smaller price! The carrot-ginger soup was excellent. Sandwiches are offered by the half, so that you can pair with soup or salad. Ask for Lico if you can. He has been there since the beginning and knows the menu like no one else. I am old-school when it comes to Silo-don't love the 1604 location.
The happy hour at the 1604 location is full of great menu items, but the bar smells like a bowling alley. I could barely sit in the bar and enjoy my appetizer and drink. We were able to move into the foyer, but space was limited. I guess if you go early, you can sit away from the smoke.
If you take your child, the waiter will accommodate him/her by offering menu items that are appropriate.

We went to the 1604 location one time. Don't know why - probably curiosity.  We went there for lunch and both had the Oak Roasted Pork Tenderloin [$10].

Food was great, the waiter was helpful.
Downstairs is the bar, so you have to take the elevator to dine.
    Nice restaurant for a date.

I passed by the Silo on Austin Hwy once, and its exterior looks like crap compared to the Silo on 1604.

Silo is very good.  The food is contemporary American and consistent.  The bar downstairs is always lively, though sometimes even the high prices can't keep the riff-raff out.  The real jewel is the lunch menu, small portions with speedier service than dinner, and a sticker price that won't kill your wallet.  I suggest either the scallops or the chicken fried oysters.  Shit, get the oyster appetizer and the scallops as your meal and then you can have both!  No outdoor dining is a big downer, as is the fact that you have to sit ridiculously close to the adjoining parties, but whatever.  Swing by on a weekend morning for brunch if you're in to that kind of thing, but skip the mimosas.

Oh, and a primo wine list for San Antonio.

Maybe I just have really high standards coming from San Francisco, but this restaurant just didn't do it for me. The food was well below mediocre and definitely not worth what we paid!

We had the special foie gras, which tasted ok but come on, $28 for a medium piece of foie gras which was not fully warmed. Certain parts of the were cold! WTH? Then I had the duck burrito where the duck was definitely OVERCOOKED where pieces were hard and chewy. Ted had the seabass which was light and flakey but definitely lacked flavor....but one star for the great waiter who was nice as can be and one star for the ambiance! Plus it was sweet that Ted thought of taking me there. However, I doubt I'd go back...

Not in the part of San Antonio, where you would expect to find a restaurant like this.  Silo-styled building [hence the name!] with a comfortable modern styled interior, with loft, and downstairs bar.

The menu is kinda Californian-like, and really reasonably priced, compared to the SF bay area.  I was envious!  I had the venison, which was neatly prepared, and delicious.  A mean chocolate souffle for dessert.  Decent wine list.

If you are in the San Antonio area, check this out after you check out the Alamo.  Wait, go to the Silo first, then check out the Alamo if you have any time left.
