I ordered off the everyday value menu.  The jr. deluxe burger was okay but kinda smushed and contained lots of shredded lettuce and mayo - two things that I find annoying when in abundance.

I thought I'd like the tater tots, but it must have been an off night.  They tasted really weird.  The boyfriend and I kept eating them, trying to pinpoint the weirdness, until we realized that the tots had a faint vanilla-y taste to them, as if a ton of french toast sticks had been deep fried in the oil first and then the tater tots went into the deep fryer afterwards.

Lastly, I tried the jr. candy sundae - vanilla ice cream, your choice of candy topping (I got Reese's), whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry on top.  This wasn't bad but was half melted when I got it.  It was quite tiny, which is good if you're going for portion control.  I probably would have preferred 1.5 to 2 of them though.  If you're going for ice cream at a fast food place, I think that McD's sundaes are better in size and taste.

Maybe I should've ordered one of the slushes, but the colors just seemed too alarming.

Finally stopped in and gave it a try. Very limited menu with no vegetarian option and no fish. Interesting drink selection of freezes, shakes and ades. Those were good. One glaring ommission for a car hop place - no drive up garbage cans. No fries just tater tots. Really it was all bland kid food.

Im not really big on fast food joints, I probably only go to McDonalds once or twice a year BUT after seeing Sonic commercials for the past 5 years I figured I had to try this place....

Food was ok. nothing really special about it, it seemed like your typical fast food. not too great, but not bad either.

the milkshake was awesome!  the vanilla shake is what bumped them from 2 stars to 3 for this review!

does anyone know if you're supposed to tip the car-hop? i did ... and she looked a little confused that i was giving her money.....?

7 months from now when i have fast food again ill probably pick this place over mcdonalds just for that shake!

For once Sonic did not have a ridiculously long line, which gave my boyfriend and I the opportunity to try it.  We went around 10:00p.m.   I have been wanting to come here since it opened, but I also did not want to wait an hour for a fast food hamburger!   I do love the whole drive in idea. The only turnoff was that we had a car full of teen girls to our right and a car with two loud teen boys to our left...lucky us!   I know Sonic is more known for desserts but I left that for next time.  I stuck with ordering a hamburger.  I think I was more infatuated with the whole drive in aspect of Sonic, but they offer decent fast food too.  The pricing is fair with most combo meals in the $5.00 range.  My burger tasted a lot like Rally's hamburgers. (If anyone remembers those)   I shall keep in mind to go back during school hours to try a limeade sometime.

Finally stopped in this afternoon to give this place a shot.  Admittedly, I was not expecting much, but even my low expectations were not met.  Sonic is a drive in, which immediately conjures up images of Eddie's in Harrison Twp.  Strike 1 against Sonic because Eddie's rules.

Strike 2 came when I bit into my Bacon-Cheeseburger Toaster sandwich and it tasted like french toast - WTF? I think their hickory sauce may have maple flavoring, but come on, I wanted my sandwich on Texas toast - I didn't order a Monte Cristo.

Strike 3 was the chili-cheese tots.  They were hardly warm when they arrived at my car.  The cheese was a gelatinous mess, the onions weren't fresh at all, and the chili was meh.  The jalapenos were fine, but how can you mess up sliced, pickled jalapenos?

The one redeeming thing I ordered today and the only reason I'm not giving Sonic 1 star was the Coconut Cream Pie milkshake.  By no means was this a delicious shake, but it was passable.  Good consistency and flavor, although it did taste somewhat artificial.

From the looks of previous reviews, maybe I should go back and give some other menu items a shot.  We'll see how quickly that happens.

It's just fast food folks but it's got some good gimmicks, like the zillions of different drinks and car-side service.

Instead of fries they have extra crispy tots and next time I will try a jalapeno burger.

If you love fast food but are tired of the same old-same old around here this place will renew your excitement for all things fried and greasy.

Oh yeah, and they have breakfast 24 hours. Look out Mickey Dee's!

Generally, I don't see a great point in rating a national chain fast food joint like Sonic, but they're just now appearing in Michigan so a lot of people don't really know what to expect. They just know those goofy commercials have been playing here for years and the nearest Sonic has historically been in Ohio. Besides, I'm a bit of a fast food connoisseur.

Those who have been to a drive-up A&W will feel a familiarity with the layout and experience. You pull into your spot, order, and they bring it out to you. Some Sonics even have employees wear roller skates to better simulate the car-hop experience of retro dining although I can't say for certain this one does. Still, this leaves you with a bit of a dilemma: you're expected to sit in your car and eat your food while dancing around the fear that your burger is about to drip mustard on the leather seats.

As for food, it's all okay but really just that. I'd say the burgers are similar to Wendy's but not as good and some of their "unique" menu options aren't so unique when you bring them to Michigan. Sure, a coney dog is a rare treat in Florida but up here it's like "no thanks, I had one yesterday." The drinks are really the part that shines and they really are as good as you've heard.

Still, the main selling points of a Sonic are the beverages and the drive-in experience. Not the food itself.

Jimi Hendrix once posed the question "Are you Experienced?"

We when it comes to the Sonic Drive-In, for me, the answer was no.

So when I saw a building under construction that began to look like a Drive-In, I became curious. When they hang the sign out front, I asked around the office to see if anyone knew what a Sonic was. Seemed everyone except  me was experienced even though there are only two other locations in Michigan. I am experienced with other out-of-state establishments such as the wonderful In-N-Out Burger, but Sonic has seemed to have escaped me.

In December, as the restaurant seemed near completion, I thought it was insane to open a Drive-in in the coldest part of the year. Who would go? When it did open, in Early January 2009, I was shocked that the place was mobbed. Lines causing traffic problems out on to Groesbeck Hwy. Every day I passed this place after 5:00 pm it was packed. In addition to drive-in stalls served by car hops in parka's and head gear, they also have a traditional fast-food drive in window and there was constantly a line around the place for both. Popular place... Are all these people experienced, or just the interested newbees like me?

So one night I decided to become experienced. I waded through the line, fighting the urge to bolt. Eventually I had my very own car stall to myself. With an extensive menu board facing me. The menu includes typical fast food items, a long list of drinks I'd never heard of (what is a Cherry Limeaide I wondered) and desserts. Yummy looking desserts. Good thing I'm in a stall and didn't have another car on my bumper as I seek to understand the options.

So I had a Super Sonic Burger (double with everything) and an order of Onion Rings. The hand made rings were great. The burger? It was OK, nothing special. To be honest, I'd rather have a Wendy's double. The Cheery Limeaide was OUTSTANDING.  A sparkling taste sensation.  Looking at the drink choices, it appears I have some work to do to sample all.

I was underwhelmed with the rest of the menu. Coney's? Perhaps it's a big draw in other states, but here in Michigan, you drive past a dozen Coney Islands to get to a Sonic. Another Coney we don't need. Chicken sandwiches and wraps ? Meh... Nothing to get me to wait through that line again.

I decided to try breakfast on another trip. The Toaster... Sausage, Egg & Cheese on Texas Toast, along with some potato Tots was all very good, but not outstanding. I prefer Tim Horton's Breakfast Sandwich.

So I've come to the conclusion that Sonic really isn't about the food. It's really about the drinks and the desserts. The food is there to a) give your mouth something to do in between sips and b) allow you to show Mom that you finished your meal before dessert.

So this morning 7:00 AM and at +9 degrees, I had a Super Sonic Breakfast Burrito with real slices of jalapeno peppers and it was outstanding!  Best item on the menu so far. Finally, something I would stop back for.  And I topped it off with an Orange Cream Slushe (yum) in spite of the ambient temperature... Just don't tell my Mom... But wait, I did finish my meal, so I'm good...

And to answer Jimi's question.... I can now answer Yes!
